All kidding aside, I am in the same boat...The last two years of my mother's assisted living I had to put on two credit cards...because I was laid off...I have been paying the interest, but I haven't managed to make any headway on the principle.

I feel for you bro.  I'm planning ahead and looked into these places for my mother.  They charge exorbitant amounts and provide only basic services.  IMO, they are huge scams, just like nursing homes.  My great aunt is 102 and has been in a nursing home for the last 5 years.  Because she had means (savings), they charge her $10,000 a month.  They took all of her savings ($300K) and her house too.  This is nothing more than legalized theft.  She could've planned more carefully and distributed that money to the family.  What an incredible waste of money.

Regarding the credit cards... you are paying mostly interest and very little principle.  It'll take 20-30 years before you pay off that debt.  Bankruptcy is the only way out of this vicious cycle for most people.

This is a curious post.  First you claim that the assisted living facility is some sort of “scam” because you don’t like their prices.  Then you fault them for charging your aunt, with the implication that her bill should be lower (what should the bill be? You don’t say).  Then you fault your aunt for not planning better.  “Better” meaning in a manner that would have given her money to other relatives (like you).  Why should giving her money to relatives be a priority for her… when what she needs is assisted living care?  Was “the family” prepared to take her in and see to her needs with regard to cooking, cleaning, bathing, etc on a 24/7 basis?  Probably not.  So why should she make giving her money to you a priority?  You sound like you feel bitter or cheated out of getting her money.  Ensuring specialized care for herself in her final years is not a “waste” of her money.  It is only a waste if, for some odd reason, you think her money should be yours.  Presumably your family members have their own incomes so they should not need hers.  I hope you plan for your final years as well as your great aunt.

Bay you probably dont have the full picture. If his aunt distributed her money and house to her relatives BEFORE she went to the nursinghome she would get the same care as she gets now but paid by the government. At least that is how it works in the eurocountry I am from.

Hope to meat you someday, STUD!

Agreed, I do not have the whole picture (do we ever?), but your claim that she would get the same care she is getting now (paid by the government) if she gave away her money to family members may be misguided.  People of means tend to choose the facility they ultimately end up in and facilities like these are not created equal.  If her assistance living bill were paid by public assistance she might very well end up in a less desirable facility to put it mildly.  Have you spent much time in nursing homes and assisted living facilities?  I have.  Believe me, if you have the money, you want to pay for the better facility.

It is logical to conclude that as a person of means his aunt (perhaps in consultation with family) chose a facility to her liking.  If she starts out in a nice place and runs out of money and has to go on government assistance, she would likely be moved to a less expensive (and crappy) facility.  So again, her money is well spent supporting her stay in a nice facility.  Giving that money to her “family” does not make sense.  They probably have zero interest in her at this stage of her life and have no desire to spend time with her.  If they did, she would be living with one of them and perhaps receiving help from a home care aide, instead of being in assisted living.

It certainly sounds like it.  Just saying.  ::)

I once knew a guy who had a very nice life… but he developed a gambling problem and lost all his money.  He was in his late 50s at the time.  He was too embarrassed to let his mom know what happened; she had money.  He fell pretty far and ended up semi retired and dependent on the generosity of another friend who let him “house sit” for him in a vacation home that he owned in Southern California.  I attended a farewell dinner for him before he moved to that house.  When I asked him what his future plan was, all he could do was whine about how he lost his money and how hard life was now.  His future plan?  To wait for his mom to die so he could inherit her money.  He literally said this out loud!  I kept my poker face on, but I remember being shocked and horrified that a grown man would say something like that.  It sounded so pathetic and craven.  Who moves through life thinking like that? :'(

$10,000 a month?  Someone could live a very lavish lifestyle for that price... maids, cooks and first class service.

Also... go fuck yourself.

Exactly.  I guess the resident GB f-a-g thinks I'm greedy.  I have plenty of money, I'm merely pointing out that they made her use all her own personal savings first before any government bennies kicked in.  That in itself is the scam.

lol at people on getbig arguing who has more money.

Getbigger 1: I have more money than you!
Getbigger 2: No, I have more money than you!
Getbigger 1: I have 5,000,000 in the bank!
Getbigger 2: I have 5,000,001 in the bank!

haha lol. Not many people here are going to admit what they really have in terms of money, so its impossible to say who has more money.

But, it's still hilarious watching two getbiggers arguing with each other about it.  :D :D

Arguing?  Nah, just stating a fact.

FYI, banks are the worst place to keep your money.

Start jerking off dudes under the bridge.  15 dollars a man.

You could do 2 at once for $30!

Unless they start jerking each other off then all you'll get is a finders fee
