Very sad news. Like a few GetbiggersI was an IronAger back in the day and he always seemed like a great guy.Sad to read in that article that it looked like the outcome would be survival.

that's an understatement if ever there was one Matt.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.  I'm sorry I couldn't be there when he was born.  But I couldn't be there, so I can only go based on what I read online...right?

The thing is, it's almost impossible to know bodybuilder's dates of birth because bodybuilders lie about it so dang much.

Bodybuilders tend not to lie about their heights.  I have found them to be honest about that.  Weights...I suspect many of them lie about that.  Dexter Jackson refused to weigh in at the Ironman for years.

Shawn Perrine was 5'8.5" incidentally.  And 165-lb, roughly.  And in shape!  How did this happen to him?  I don't understand.  I brought up his age because, I'm pretty sure he was 53...but 53, 51...this has got to go down as the most shocking death to me this year.  Shawn, if his own words were not lies, was the picture of health.

5'8.5", 165-lb with abs over the age of 50.  And on Ironage, his comments about steroids seemed to suggest he was not a user.  And at 165-lb, why would he have to be?

I just don't get this.  You have a guy like Dennis James who is roughly the same age and who has been competing for, what, 30 years now?  And likely on steroids for much of that time.  Yet he is still alive while Shawn dies.

Unless I'm missing something, I guess genetics can just be a...B word...sometimes.

Well, my day is officially ruined.

RIP Shawn.

Really sad to hear the news. Met him at IronAge about 17 years ago.
A class Act.

I remember him saying that "if the only way to be big and lean is by the way of steroids , I'll never be big."

At the end he was bigger than he thought he was.

RIP.

Common belief would state smoking causes lung cancer. This is correct. However non smoking lung cancer is on the rise. Some 15 to 20 percent of all lung cancer victims are non smokers.

I'm under the same impression, in his last article he seems confident about getting over this, that makes all much more depressing...

Man, I could tell he was a good guy.
I really liked and miss Ironage.
It really pissed me off when people who don't
even know who they are talking about was putting
down his announcing at the Olympia.
He humbly put himself in the backseat to DJ
while announcing (kind of playing the bodybuilding
fan who is asking the questions). DJ kind of made him
look bad by his interaction with him and some well known Youtube
commentators didn't know who the hell they were putting down.
He had 10X more knowledge than those putting down his commentating.
Really pissed me off!
But that's the kind of guy he was (playing the average bodybuilding fan
to DJ as the expert.)
Hopefully, he gets memorialized by opening Ironage back up...
(Not even as an operating site but one where people can go on
and read old posts & make it in remembrance to Shawn so the younger
ones can know who he is; and read some awesome posts by people that
were around back in Arnold's time. I remember chatting with Tom Platz on there.

Well said! I remember hearing the same thing about his commentating at the Olympia last year. That's just how Shawn was, he would always take the back seat to let someone else shine. Whenever I ran into him, he was always asking me questions about how I was doing and making comments about how good I looked. Peter McGough said on Facebook today that when he spoke to Shawn after he found out he had cancer, Shawn was asking Peter how he was doing instead of talking about himself. That would be great if they could open up the old Ironage so we could go back and read the threads. That was a great site.

Shawn was such a good guy. The last time that I saw him and spoke with him was at Joe Weiders memorial service in Santa Monica. We were joking about how near-impossible it was to get away from Leroy Colbert...once Leeroy started going into his stories. Leroy was awesome..but it was hard to get away once he started. I remember asking Shawn about IRONAGE and him saying something about it getting a bad virus and most everything getting destroyed. Too bad.. because I loved that site. RIP Shawn.

His Ironage site was incredible. It had so many knowledgeable people posting. The place was like an encyclopedia of bodybuilding history. Some big names posted there. I believe that's where I was chatting with Casey Viator. So many passionate guys who loved bodybuilding were contributors. A one point it was better than any magazine published. The place was an education in bodybuilding and everything in physical culture.  Shawn and I debated on opposite sides of some issues but hey it's bodybuilding. Hope he didn't take offense and from the kind words from people who actually knew him I assume he didn't.  Nothing of real significance in the scheme of things. Watching him go from the site to running the biggest magazine in bodybuilding was a meteoric rise.  I pray in time his family finds peace. Life is short and tomorrow isn't a guarantee. One of the things I hear repeated about him from people that actually knew him was that he was kind. The world would be a better place if there were more kind people.

This makes me wish I was at the 2016 Mr. Olympia to have had the privilege of speaking to Shawn a final time before his passing, but I had family obligations and couldn't be there.  The sad thing about Shawn's death is that he was in an industry surrounded by men who would rather be big, and despite having never won a show, he passed away at such a young age, that you would think he spent decades of his life as a beefy heavyweight or some kind of monster.

The reality of the matter was that Shawn was the picture of health.  You really don't get much healthier than that.  5'8.5" and 165-lb?  That is basically ideal, especially when you consider his low body fat.  Sure, he would be considered too small by serious bodybuilders, but from a health perspective, you don't really beat that.

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is a very scary disease - it's apparently the longest word, period.  That's a pretty rare condition though...on the range of black lung for someone who doesn’t work in a coal mine.

It makes me wonder if somewhere in Shawn's history he had exposure to inhaled particulate matter of a toxic nature.  It's just...very strange.

Wow. I'm shocked. I used to be a regular Ironage poster back in the day as well. I never met him in person but I had many online conversations with him and he was a first class guy who had a true love for the sport.

From Flex Magazine

In Memoriam: Shawn Perine (1966-2017)

On Monday morning, the AMI Fitness Group was dealt a devastating blow—our VP and Editorial Director, colleague, and friend Shawn Perine passed away at the age of 51.

Perine was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer on September 22, and had remained upbeat and positive throughout his battle. Perine never drank, smoked, or used drugs, which made the diagnosis so unexpected. In fact, he spent the last 38 years of his life eating clean, pushing himself in the gym, and inspiring others through his commitment to health and fitness.

For decades—as a fitness enthusiast, writer, editor, and later Editor-in-Chief and Chief Content Director for Muscle & Fitness, Muscle & Fitness Hers, FLEX and Men’s Fitness—Perine became one of the most authoritative voices in our industry.

As a child growing up in Long Island, NY, Perine’s passion for the sport of bodybuilding was fueled by the 1977 documentary Pumping Iron. By the age of 13 he was tearing through every exercise book he could find, and also hitting the gym five days per week in hopes of carving a physique like Arnold Schwarzenegger, who would later become one of Perine’s trusted friends.

“Shawn Perine was not only a fantastic ambassador for the fitness crusade and a wonderful editor of Muscle & Fitness, he was a dear friend and a great man,” Schwarzenegger tweeted. “I’m heartbroken, and the world just lost an amazing force. My thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Although Perine concluded that his body wasn’t suited for the stage, he began to write fervently about bodybuilding, which led to freelance work at FLEX magazine in the ‘90s. Later, his contributions earned him a full-time position as FLEX’s senior writer in California.

In 2011, Perine moved from California back to New York to start his dream job as Editor-in-Chief of Muscle & Fitness. His mission was to “carry the torch lit by Joe Weider” and work hand-in-hand with AMI CEO David Pecker to “spread the gospel of health and fitness to the world.”

“Shawn was unquestionably the finest fitness journalist I have worked with in the 15 years since AMI acquired all the Weider Publications” said Mr. Pecker. “His knowledge of health, training, nutrition and the sport of bodybuilding was without equal. He was my colleague, my friend, and an inspiration to the anyone who knew him. The industry will miss him. I will miss him."

Outside of the gym, Perine will be remembered for his love of animals, the environment, paleontology, architecture, and, most important, his huge heart. While the fitness community has lost a valuable member, the AMI family has lost a loyal and dear colleague. May our friend rest in peace.

AMI will distribute information about how to make contributions to the American Cancer Society in memory of Shawn Perine in the near future.

"One thought regarding your heart: follow it. Unlike some of your other muscles, it will never lead you astray." —Shawn Perine

Sad stuff, RIP.  I'd love to get more details about this, I mean were there any signs leading up to this point, maybe breathing issues for years or something along those lines?

That's what I was wondering, but apparently, no.  He was sick with what he thought was pneumonia for two months, then he finally basically said "I'm going to just go for it" - and he went to get checked out at the hospital, and they were like "Oh, and you have about two months to live."

I have no idea how a person could accept that.  While I do believe that Shawn had a good life...that must have been so difficult to accept.  I'm still floored by this news.  It may be the saddest news I have heard this year.  Perhaps that is a Western-centric position for me to take, but I am 35, so it's not like Shawn was leaps and bounds older than me.  This could easily happen to me - or any of us for that matter. :(

Great post.  I too enjoy the fresh fishy scent of pussy.  Love that scent.

Yes - ask Chadwick The Beta.  He knows.

Firstly Earl, I do not know the answer to your question.  But I just wanted to say that I think it is a good one.  Remember Andy Kaufman?  When he died at 35 of lung cancer, despite being a non-smoker, I was like "How could this possibly happen?"  But then a friend of mine said that a lot of his comedy shows were likely in smoky lounges.  SO yeah...he could have been inhaling smoke for hours a day, despite being a non-smoker.

Still though - it boils down to something that YOU YOURSELF stated many times on here...people in their forties and fifties die everyday...sadly, it isn't *that* unusual, even though, as far as I know, only 6% of all people die by the age of 50.  But you are right, it happens every single day.  :(

I think we all look for external reasons when a person dies young.  It's just hard to accept that we can die like that at such a young age.  Sadly, it is possible.  Poor Shawn.  As BSN said, it's just really unfair.

Great post.

Opioids are not particularly toxic to the organs.  I have read no literature that they contribute to heart disease or cancer - indeed, opioids are prescribed for cancer patients.  I hope Shawn was given access in his last few months of life.

That said, overdoses are definitely an issue.  An that is what is happening as far as opioids and death are concerned - people are overdosing.

The lesson here is don't use drugs intravenously.  You can overdose through insufflation or other forms of ingesting, but intravenous use is the surest way to kill way.  If you eat an Oxycontin 80 pill, your body would likely puke it out.  Unfortunately, once in your bloodstream, there is not much you can do, aside from call 911 and get Narcan from the paramedics.

If I was in such a situation, I would first unlock the door and open it wide, then lie on the couch, and put drug paraphernalia next to me - so in case of passing out, the paramedics would immediately know what happened.  But that said, I have zero interest in using drugs intravenously.  The risks are far too high.

A few pro bodybuilders have been intravenous drug users - Mike Christian was the most notable example.  I would say another name on here, but I'm not sure if that was even made public.

He gets my ultimate respect. He chose to fight his disease "in house".  No GoFundme, No sympathy bumps, and No hospital bed selfies for views.

Shawn was a man's man. He went gentle into that good night.

Fight like a lion without the roar.
