Prince is good on guitar, mostly a showman but also a great pop song writer through many instruments. James Brown was kinda the same way.

Alan Holdsworth was a serious ground breaking guitarist. Nobody knows who Holdworth is though because he doesn't write catchy songs, so that's a thing.

Coco Montoya started out as the drummer for blues guitarist Albert Collins.....Collins taught him how to play guitar.

Edgar Winter, Paul McCartney, and Stevie Wonder all played various instruments as well.

Funny you posted this, in my YouTube feed this morning was a Panama guitar isolated video. All you heard was Eddie playing the entire song.

Awesome rhythm work. Sounded like casual playing instead of the typical note, pluck precision in many songs today.

Ultimately the ‘best guitarist’ is really just someone picking a favourite band/style/image. People say Brian May is the best guitarist in the world. No.

All the fret-aerobics aside (which gets old) that is where he shines, just what you mentioned. His chords, voicings, rhythm, writing, etc...
You're right, there really is no "best guitarist" only a favorite... Of course some are better than others, Im talking about when the top echelon are compared.

Like when people say "Clapton is better than Beck (and the other way around).. Nonsense...

So many greats,no way to say who's the best.
ACDC use to play George Benson's "On Broadway" sometimes during their shows because Angus loved it.
EVH would ask Alice Cooper to play golf because Glen Cambell played also and he wanted to pick his brain.
If you ever get a chance watch the Jeff Beck documentary. it's awesome.
