Alex Lifeson ....
Rush is my first (and always) favourite band. Just two days ago I bought the 40-anniversary reissue of Hemispheres (two-disc), as a matter of fact.
Alex is one strange guitarist. Haha. Starting his pro life as a Page-style player, helping to engineer what’s become the progressive metal substyle with ever-more elaborate and complex compositions, and then morphing into this totally unique hard-rock new waver; equal parts Ed VH and ... The Edge, etc.
As a soloist he’s constructed and recorded some of the best moments of the instrument. Live he can be hit-and-miss adequately recreating these, in truth. But no one is like Lifeson.
He’s the “abstract” musician in Rush and is effortlessly musical. He was a wonderful counter to Peart’s “rigid” nature and Geddy’s methodical approach and melodic sensibilities.
Alex is always one of my favourites, although his playing at times can frustrate me. Haha.
