So many to choose.. David Gilmour... SRV.... Gary Moore... Randy Rhoads.. Brian May.. I could easily keep going.. I thought Ace Frehley was the best as a 10 year old kid. Now I know music

Roy Clark is definitely underrated but check out Pepe Romero's version of Malaguena on yt. Tried to copy the link but it wouldn't load.

There is no one "best" there are many (MANY) greats, and each person has their favorite.

Rory is one of my favorites and one of the greatest. Ace is very good, far from the greatest though...

Zappa, Vai, Hlubek, Satriani, Hendrix, Beck, etc... So many...

This.

Right now Derek Trucks is the deal.

It's ridiculous to try to label one as the best. What's the best car? Motorcycle? Too many variables. For me it's Doc Watson and Randy Rhoads that still move me after all these years, though there are plenty of others.

Hendrix - Huge impact and influence. He was flamboyant, loud, rhythmically inventive, and was a pioneer of feedback. Purely as a player, overrated to high hell. Nowhere near technically impressive.

Frehley - As said, made countless kids pick up an axe. Played some catchy (but simple) solos. Technically nowhere. And hasn’t learned one new lick since 1974.

Page - Very talented arranger, producer and guitar composer. Horrific live player. Beyond hack under the lights. Embarrassing. Not even arguable.

SRV - Incredible. Had that something that livened a style massively overdone to death.

Gibbons - Wicked. A natural feel and touch. Tones for miles.

Prince - Better than most realized. Still, nowhere NEAR an elite player. Everyone drools for that live solo amongst the collective celebrity musicians. It’s decent. Just decent.

Clapton - Was a fiery (rote blues, mind you) player decades ago. Slowhand has defined boring and stock since the late ‘70s.

Beck - A rarity. Has gotten dramatically better over the decades. No one like him. Amongst his Brit-era peers, a king. Makes Page, Clapton and the rest sound absolutely amateur.

I could go on and on.

Hendrix changed the way everyone played since. No one was doing what he was doing until afterwards.
When he went to england w/Chas chandler, Clapton, Page, Beck and all the rest turned up to see him at the
Clubs he was playing and were blown away.

Everyone copied Hendrix until Van Halen came along.
Then everyone copied Hendrix and Van Halen.

I don't think I could pick who I think is best but without Hendrix, guitar players would
Never be doing some of the things they do that Hendrix did first.

Some of my favorites are Gary Moore, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, and Eric Gales.

I used to go see Danny gatton once a week back in 1988/89 when I lived in Maryland.
He never played the song the same way twice and never really repeated himself.
He blew me away with something different every time I saw him and was amazing.
I have only found one recording that even comes close to showing what he used to do.
His records didn't showcase his virtuosity that way. There's a crappy live version on iTunes of him
Playing Harlem nocturne with tom principato that gives a small peek at what he would do.
If you want to hear something awesome you've probably never heard before, it's worth $1.29.

I like just about every player mentioned and trying to say who is best is almost impossible.

I like how guys that cover other people's work put them down. When they try to do something original they unintentionally plagiarize other's licks. Just pompous tab players.  When I see a musician gig and do nothing but covers and solos almost lick for lick then put down the player it reeks of scum baggery.  Come up with your own original stuff that is loved world wide and get back to me.

I find the Cruisin' Deuces version of Harlem Nocturne rather incredible.  Double stops out the ying yang.

There's no way to truly figure out who the best guitarist is.  You may as well be arguing over whether Yates or Coleman was better.

That version is nice but this other live version is the only recording I found that shows a peek at how good he really was.
The studio stuff is nothing but pro and I really respect that he's not going over the top and keeping everything musically tasteful but when he played live there was a spontaneity that he had that I don't get from the recordings. His chops and his ear meant you never knew what to expect from him in a good way.
On he surface he seems like a regular rockabilly guy but would play all these different things.
If you like gatton, seriously look up Harlem nocturne live with tom principato even just to hear the preview if you don't want buy it.

Was watching some Danny Gatton YouTube videos not four days ago. Great player.

Those others you mention, Moore, Johnson and Vai, are incredible. I’m an especially huge fan of the latter two. Gary kinda lost me when he went full-on blues. Not that he stunk at it or anything.

I know of Eric Gales, but that’s about it. I’ll check out some videos/songs.

There are many great guitarists depending on the genre.

Django Reinhardt, Chet Atkins, and lately Tommy Emmanuel and Mark Knopfler stand out as superb musicians.

I enjoy this:
