Actually, the cabinets are custom designed and built to fit the kitchen. The cabinetmaker did an excellent job. There's lots of deep drawer storage for pots, pans, china and serving bowls. In the lower corner cupboard the shelves pull all the way out making it unnecessary to reach in. I wanted inset doors and drawers as opposed to surface mount because the look is much cleaner. The cabinet boxes and shelves are maple plywood. The cabinets were painted on site to exact specifications so that they and all the casework match. The island is Quartersawn oak This kitchen did not come cheap, but it is well worth the expense and time it took to put it in.

A shame your budget didn't allow for half or full sawn oak but it's a lovely space anyway.

When I selected the material and design for the new front door and sidelight I wish I'd chosen quartersawn oak. Although the door has the same stain as the island, it looks different and it is not as interesting. -Can't really see the gain of the wood in the photo, but the color is right.

Tbh I like the flame patterns you get with flat sawn. I thought quartered had more to do with boards not cupping than with aesthetics, but I don't know the finer points of oak and its prized flecking.

Hoping to build my own nouveauish kitchen one day and incorporate lots of home cast bronze for which I will cheat the forms with a 3d printer. Til then guess I'll just lacquer up some frikkin plywood.

Can't remember if you ever told us the cost but I'm sure it wasn't cheap!

Missed that one. I just now checked it out and it earned over 200 mil. and cost 30 mil to make. Guess it was a fairly popular movie.
