Buy some squat shoes Mr. Wheels.  They aren’t that expensive.

I always cringe when I see someone trying to do extremely heavy squats. When you start to go over six plates it just gets scary. All that weight traveling down your spinal column, which doesn't seem like the most stable platform. At least with a leg press, the force is going through the big, stable bones of your femur and hips.

The older I get the more safety conscious I become. Dumbbell squats have replaced the barbell. I use straps and keep my back fairly upright sinking my butt down. I make sure not to deadlift the weight. It's a really hard exercise and one doesn't have to use a massive weight to make the legs work hard. Leg press is my major thigh exercise. No more benching with a barbell. Only dumbbells in controlled full range of motion with a moderate cadence. Press behind the neck that I used for nearly 40 years is gone. Only dumbbells or military barbell. Even something that seems really safe like a hack squat can mess up a back. You're jamming your shoulders into pads with the most powerful muscles of your body compressing the spine.  Sometimes I feel my vertebra is going in an S curve doing hacks and I never have back problems. Deadlifts are rarely done with reps under 4 and I'm beginning to think that that's  too little reps.  Usually use an EZ curl bar for biceps because a straight bar hurts my shoulder. I think this stems from ripping my bicep off the insertion 10 plus years ago.

I'm still not completely away from doing stupid stuff damaging my body. I was doing 40 yard wind sprints about 5 month ago or so. I was a sprinter in high school and college. Surprisingly I can still explode into a hard sprint. I tweaked my Achilles and what did this rocket scientist do? If you said rest it, you would be wrong. I figured if I can't run I will walk fast for 5 miles a day. Then after a few weeks of that decided I will get back to running. Every couple of days everything would swell up and I was limping. Finally got so bad I went to a doc and he took an xray and shot it up with cortisone.  The big surprise was that he asked me when I broke my leg meaning my fibula.  I told him in high school I was severely limping for about 5 weeks. I'm guessing I broke it then but it's not the only time my leg hurt. Now I can't run and the next step is an MRI to see if I have a tear.

Off my soap box about the prevention of injuries through doing stupid stuff.

your legs are stronger than your lower back, as such super heavy squats are going to fuck up your back, the risks outweight the reward

Exactly. Which is why the resistance should travel through the heavy and stable bones and structure through your legs and hips and not traveling done the relatively weak and unstable bones of your spine.

Squats are great and necessary if you're a powerlifter but there are better alternatives that are not only safer but better for quad hypertrophy. I don't think it's a coincidence that as squats has fallen out of favor and no the longer the "must do" exercise that quads today have gotten bigger and more developed. Platz-like thighs are almost routine now.

Hard to believe he weighs 300 being so lean plus he doesn't have a lot of mass in his legs.

In 1950 Reg Park discovered he couldn't be both the strongest and best built man. He chose the latter.

Ronnie came to grief using insane poundages. 800+ pound squats and deadlifts helped destroy his body.

Arthur Jones said we should build strength not demonstrate it.

Larry has to decide what he wants to do. Lifting heavier and heavier will lead to more injuries.

Well said, Vince. Occasionally you come out with some gems, based on your years of experience.

With respect to Larry, strictly in terms of winning, I feel he is better suited to powerlifting. His physique doesn't have that freaky look of a world class bodybuilder. He's only young, so maybe he'll fill out more in time.

From a safety point of view, as Vince said, it's almost certainly better to lighten the weights, up the reps and do a more traditional bodybuilder routine. He should speak to Dexter Jackson about longevity in bodybuilding.

LOL "The Beetus"..

In a video w/ Larry, Mike O'Tren and Jay a couple months back, Cutler was trying to be polite while saying to Larry "Stick to Powerlifting".
Said he didn't have the body, for bodybuilding. It takes a completely different style of training.

O'Hearn mentioned something like how Larry (and guys like him) are sort of slaves to YT and IG, trying to please the "fans" doing all the crazy lifting, etc.
Larry said "it pays the bills" or something to that extent. His left bicep now has a gap at the top tie-in, where he tore it.

LMFAO @ 'the beetus".  You sound like me and my sister ribbing my late father when he had it.  :)
