You young guys probably don't remember but the only way to follow bodybuilding was through magazines back in the day. You often had to wait months to find out who won the Olympia.  When I was dating my girl who is now my wife see saw all my bodybuilding magazines. She thought they were gay porn.  She said none of her four brothers were remotely into bodybuilding. She was vaguely aware of the activity but thought it was some underground sub culture. She wasn't far off. Her brothers were into football, baseball and other real sports. What convinced her was all the weight lifting I did. She said if I wasn't into lifting she would have thought they were fag magazines.

  I bought comic books as a little kid at a local drug store.  When I was about 12 years old I started lifting weights after reading a book and course from Bob Hoffman that my dad was using.  That month when I went to the drug store to buy my comics I saw a Muscle & Fitness and bought that instead.  Every month when I went to the store I would buy either Muscle & Fitness, Ironman, or Musclemag International.  The owner of the drugstore also worked the checkout and always gave me some strange look that I didn't understand.

My college girlfriends all thought bodybuilding was gay and again I couldn't understand why as I must have been very naive.  When I found out how many bodybuilders did gay for pay I was shocked and embarrassed and never bought the mags in the stores ever again.  I got subscriptions instead.

When first started, Kennedy's Musclemag International had a last page pictorial that was called, "All Of Us".  Nudes with the wiener hanging out for all to see.  I had bought one issue and that was it for me.   Kennedy defended it saying something about "it's not like we're zooming in so we can see every wrinkle on a man's penis like (I don't remotely recall the gay magazine he was referencing)"...

FTN.  I didn't buy another issue for years and when I did get one I made sure it didn't have that stuff in it but then ol' Bobbers Kennedy started his "Beef It" B.S. pictorial in the back of the mag.    Again, Fuck That Noise.

I'm not remotely homosexual but like the "all of us" crap it looked more than a bit homosexual to me so I threw the mag away and didn't buy any more.  I would get Iron Man and Muscle Builder/Power but when Weider changed it to Muscle & Fruitness I only bought Iron Man and finally quit that mag too.

He claimed it was "artistic".  I don't recall the photos looking like Michelangelo's statue of David or the Farnese Hercules. 
 
Kennedy was originally a tremendous admirer of Steve Reeves and the more aesthetic physique that Reeves represented, but that gradually went away and he went the "beef it" route.  Maybe he was a great guy in the real world, I'll never know.   

But that "all of us" crap just creeped me out like Joe Biden does to women.  Yuck.

In his prime, his early wins, he brought bodybuilding into a whole new level. Not only was he the best bber in his era he, along with Coleman (depending on tasted and preferences), are considered the best bbers ever. Such size, density, and chiseled rock hardness has never been achieved since.
