Seems like typical Hanky semantics. So now we all have to guess what cut open a blockage means, as if you have some sort of abdominal surgery and went home the same day. Did you have a thrombosed hemorrhoid?
Not sure about cutting it open, but a blockage is a term sometimes used for feces than isn't moving because the person is terribly constipated. The harder they push to 'grunt it out', the more pressure they put on their hemorrhoids which causes them to burst and bleed.
More bluntly, he probably had a gigantic 10lb. turd stuck in his colon.

Technically a bowel obstruction is:
A gastrointestinal condition in which digested material is prevented from passing normally through the bowel.
It can be caused by fibrous tissue that compresses the gut, which can develop many years after abdominal surgery. It can also be caused by certain medications.
Symptoms may include severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and an inability to pass gas or stool.
Treatment includes avoiding solid foods, using pain and nausea medications, and close monitoring. A tube can be inserted to help relieve pressure. Depending on the severity of the obstruction, surgery may be needed.
