I still outsource my animal edibles so I guess it's fair I get hucksters.

It's not just division of labor/ I don't have time to hunt for meat. I don't have the time but even if I did I'd still be squeamish about killing a mammal and I'd even have a hard time with ducks or chickens. I sure like gobbling them up tho.  ::) I'm totally full of shit.

Animal farmers have a different mindset about the animals they raise.  They can be pretty unemotional about it.

Animals are products to them.

How could anyone raise cows for veal?  It's very cruel.  One of the worst.  But they do it.  And people order veal in a restaurant.

I would never order or eat veal in a restaurant.  I'd never buy it myself.

Doctors are the same way about patients.  You can't be emotionally involved and do the job.  You'd go nuts.

Yep. Chickens and ducks for eggs I could do. But in no time they'd all have names and I'd be paying the vet far more than the cost of eggs to make Suzie Bobble and Krankybeak be immortal.

I'm getting ready to shell out for a dog surgery for a de-ligamented ankle. I just don't have what it takes to not pay a vet. I should probably stick to one animal at a time unless I want to end up living in a refrigerator box.

I don't have a dog or cat now.  One reason is the cost of vet services today which is insane.

When we got our first dog when I was 12 my dad said vet bills are never more than £10 because thats how much it costs to put them to sleep.

That's my attitude more or less.

People spend thousands having medical procedures on their pets.

It's obscene and unjustifiable and I could do a lot more good if I gave it to reputable charity. But I got a contract with this dog.

She's got good years left if all goes well. Its an injury so I'm not extending her expiration date here. She's like 35 in people years. If this isn't what money is for then what is it for?

All these rationalizations and more. Yep. One animal at a time. No chickens for me.

1x1 for all of them?! If they all went out that'd be a tower of chickens like 500 feet high!

I think it means the opportunity to have a 1x1 or something.......either way, agree with you - it's BS

Yeah but if they could do Cirque du Chicken acrobatics like form a feathered pillar on 12"x12" ground then they wouldn't have to lay eggs for a living. They'd get the superbowl halftime show right after the Tranny Nun Dildo Familytainment Extravaganza.

And they could pay their own fucking vet bills.

I agree but I've heard there's lawyer bullshit in labeling. "Free range" means they've got a particular sized area outside the barn except in practice the chickens are too stupid to go out there so they spend as much time inside as non-free range birds. No feed stipulations either.

Kinda like how legally you can call something 'organic' by meeting regulations but it can still be monocroped potentially GMO crap seeded just long enough after the glyphosate.

Maybe I'm full of shit. I never dug in to it. I buy the free range but always suspect I'm funding shysters.

Yeah, there's loads of bullshit involved. You know what companies are like: they'll pull every trick in the book to get around a piece of legislation and cut corners. It's shit because it makes people just not want to bother. I think EU legislation is slightly better than Australian and US, but I just stick with getting eggs from my neighbour down the road or buying organic (as opposed to just 'free range').

Had the same thing with one of my mastiffs years ago. Tore a cruciate ligament and cost me thousands. There's a poorly concealed neurotic side to me that comes to the surface with dogs, so I'd have donated my own ligaments if needed, but I did want to burn down the insurance company for busting out some bullshit clause that exempted them from paying out.

I work with a lot of professionals in injury recovery so a lot of nerdy , intellectual types

what I have noticed if they aren't married - they are fat as shit with some kind of animal they talk about CONSTANTLY - they even bring the thing to work

now if I was a vet and fat boy brought that fat little beast to me with arthritis - you bet your ass I'm charging his ass

They are substitute children for some people.

When women are at the procreation/nesting age they go nuts over a dog if they aren't married or have kids.

I grew up on a farm.

My grandfather explained when i was really young, that when you are starving it's pretty easy to kill an animal.

The problem today is that we are spoiled with grocery stores.

If things went south i bet all of you would kill your pet cow in 30 seconds if your family was starving to death.

When i was 12 years old, i shot a white tail buck in the shoulder, it was paralyzed but still very alive.

My grandfather handed me a knife and told me to cut its throat.

To teach me a lesson in order to not injure animals but kill them in a single shot.

I still remember holding that bucks head down with my boot as i cut it's throat.

And the sound it made.

Well yeah. But I don't live in a post-civilizational world of scarcity and starvation so I can pay a vet to fix my dog. If I was in Mad Max world I'd probably opt to eat non-allied humans since they're competing apex predators and the biggest security threat and I could take all their shit.

Your grandfather kinda sounds like a dick. Its not like you didn't shoot the best you could so I don't see the value in his lesson. You did your best to kill it with one shot and it didn't work out. The guy never hit anything but a bullseye? If anything it would just give you target panic. If it was about "put the boy face to face with yada yada" then why give you a rifle instead of a bow or a spear?  Did he ever explain why, once you failed to give it an optimally humane death, the second most humane option of another shot isn't the way to go and it's best to do something slow and painful?

I'm sure it was memorable but I doubt it improved your marksmanship which it was his job as an adult to assess before taking you out.

Hunting is a more honest way to procure meat and I don't like to imagine animals in an industrial farm setup, but my 76yo mom wouldn't be physically capable of hunting, it's basically illegal where I live unless you're rich enough to pay for it on private land, and there's risk of disease and parasites. Rogan mentioned his bud Rinella, who is a professional wild game cook, got trichonosis. Those are worms which live in your muscles and presumably eat your muscles. Fuck no.

I'm sure it was memorable but I doubt it improved your marksmanship which it was his job as an adult to assess before taking you out.

He taught me a lesson to not make mistakes.

And to be fair i saw him shoot deer that were at half stride with a 243 at 100+ yards.

While inhumane it did teach me to respect the animal, by watching it suffer.

Where i grew up wasn't too far off from mad max to be fair.

Also, spending time in a slaughterhouse ruined me for a while.

It's more humane to just shoot a wild animal in the heart.

Just cook your food medium and no parasites.

That's why everyone (except Rogan) tells you to cook wild game appropriately.

I can tell you this, if/when the apocalypse comes, i'll be one of the .00001% that will make it without suffering, just based on my childhood.

That's what my grandpa taught me, to be 100% self-sufficient.
