In the UK, our housing situation is a little different as the land is much smaller compared to America (and with immigration the way it is, it's getting cramped even more), so it's tough to compute.

It is not normal. I think the house was an inheritance. Even so he must have steady income from somewhere (he never says where) to cover maintenance costs.
