How heavy are you?

At a lighter bodyweight, around 180-190 pounds, I was good for 37 full chin-ups.  That was a long time ago.  Now that I've entered my 40s and my weight fluctuates around 230, I don't really do them because I feel like they put a lot of pressure on my shoulders.  Injury avoidance is one of my main training goals, these days.

I take it you mean chins and not pull ups. Chins really strain the biceps and shoulders for sure.

I’m average on chin ups ,but used to do 120-140  push ups in one shot .Now even push ups would be like Walken’s count .

Those are pull-ups.  Chin-ups are with palms facing in and arms closer together.  Always found them more comfortable than pull-ups, but rough on the shoulders sometimes.  (And that bicep tendon that runs underneath the shoulder...)

I’m 43 and start my back workout with 18 pull ups (not sure if that’s the same, I overhand grip not under) and could maybe eke out more. I’m 235 pounds.

You're welcome
sorry I missed your post pal

I used to do chins back in my early 30s sets of 8-10 reps, just after my layoff and then back tarining just never got around to doing them again

Been watching a lot of gymnasts recently and the bodyweight thing appeals at the moment, I just cant be arsed with the sets and reps of a bodybuilding routine anymore

I have enogh stuff in my garage to train, my wifes clogged the place up with shit
I go to the gym for variety although it is annoying seeing the PTs just wasting people time and charging them money for it

I only talk to maybe 7 people at the gym, most of them women

At some point everyone I have ever met ends up getting on my fucking nerves, Im just not all that tolerant.
First thing I do when I meet someone new is look for something I dont like about them and really focus in on it, saves a lot of time later.

For a minute there I thought somebody hacked josSwift account lol, Doesn’t sound like one of his typical thread I thought maybe Hanky took it over. I do 10 to 12 sometimes as a warm-up for my back workouts and maybe 10 at the back end of the workout I’m 56 180 pounds

I’ve done 22/23 in early 30s at 250lbs and used to hang two 20kg plates off a dip belt for 5/6

Thought this was a thread about Ron.

Don't set expectations too high. If you're talking about pull-ups (as seen in the animation), doing them properly with good form is hard. Most people don't realise they're doing them with shit form. Doing 10 is a realistic goal, and it's impressive when you see the average person doing it.

The key is to just keep doing them often. If you have one of those machines that allows you to kneel on it as it takes some of the weight off, they're awesome. Just start repping them out on that to build up strength and get the muscles accustomed to the stretch. When I'm home, I like to use it now for when I've done all the sets I can do unassisted, then I'll jump on that to push my forearms and grip a bit more.

What Phantom Spunker said, doing them in a way I think is proper is hard as shit (to me at least). I'm a fat fuck and can't do even one overhand pullup, feels like I'll tear something when I try. I feel it most in the bracialis and upper forearm (some think pullups/wide pulldowns has to do with the disappearing upper forearm in older lifters). I sometimes do pullups with a triangle close grip, feels less injurious, and am happy with about 5 full reps so it's something I do a few 'honest' reps with somewhere in the workout. I'm 47 but it's been like this for decades and I'm seen as relatively strong, pulling, rowing, other back moves, but I guess pullups never were my thing. It's impressive when you see someone do good pullups and some can even touch their lower chest to the bar. All the pros do half pullups, nothing wrong with that necessarily though, as long as the back gets worked.

Exactly this...but if he's no machine he can do band assisted chins

Still pretty good. Most men can barely do 1 at any age and over 50 very few can.
