What Phantom Spunker said, doing them in a way I think is proper is hard as shit (to me at least). I'm a fat fuck and can't do even one overhand pullup, feels like I'll tear something when I try. I feel it most in the bracialis and upper forearm (some think pullups/wide pulldowns has to do with the disappearing upper forearm in older lifters). I sometimes do pullups with a triangle close grip, feels less injurious, and am happy with about 5 full reps so it's something I do a few 'honest' reps with somewhere in the workout. I'm 47 but it's been like this for decades and I'm seen as relatively strong, pulling, rowing, other back moves, but I guess pullups never were my thing. It's impressive when you see someone do good pullups and some can even touch their lower chest to the bar. All the pros do half pullups, nothing wrong with that necessarily though, as long as the back gets worked.
