I drank at least 40 beers lost the ability to count one night in college while tripping on acid.

I quit booze and weed recently. Booze went first - I think October 28th it was (but fuck "counting days") - I visited the UK to meet up with all my buddies from school and our 20s. They all still drink - I stuck to "Guinness 0.0". I got through the whole of Christmas and New Year without it.

I'm basically over it. It holds no appeal at all. I had no plans to quit forever - I didn't want the pressure - but I feel that's where I am now. I go out with the boys and they all handled it like cool friends - they patted me on the back and respected it and never once said "have a real drink" - one stepson of a mate that doesn't know my history made a jibe about my Guinness 0 order - but my mate pounced on him - and ended it. Not that I needed a white knight -but I have good people.

Weed I got into 500mg of gummies a night. Quit that in December - that was a bit of a nightmare - a rebound - but now I have no vices. Nothing to give up. I feel good. I have energy.

Basically - it's all shit that simply borrows from tomorrow. I can hang out with drinkers and soak up the atmosphere and sort of get taken up with it.

It's dogshit. But I have no issue with those still on it. To be honest - they make times more fun and allow me to take my guard down too.

The liver converts ethanol to acetaldehyde in an attempt to get the ethanol out of the bloodstream. Acetaldehyde is a know carcinogen but you need elevated quantities over a period of time to trigger tumors.

Acetaldehyde is also in tobacco smoke and in vaping. It is also naturally  in some fruits, in fragrances, etc.

So if you have an occasional drink you are ok. It is the chronic exposure that is the problem.

When you drink - your liver treats alcohol like a poison and prioritizes processing it over processing fat and other stuff.
In addition - it dehydrates you and causes water retention.

So yeah - makes you look a fat fuck for more than just the calories in it.

Alcohol use is widely accepted in the US, but even moderate consumption is associated with many harmful effects

In the past two decades, the idea that moderate drinking may actually confer health benefits has taken hold, backed up by some preliminary and limited evidence. This led to the broad notion in the popular media that a glass of red wine a day reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

But there was one major flaw in many of the studies used to back up the claim that a glass of red wine is good for health. They compared those who drink at moderate levels to people who consume no alcohol whatsoever, rather than comparing those who drink heavily versus at lower levels.

There are many reasons why people who drink at moderate levels may be fundamentally different – and healthier – than those who do not drink at all. For example, many people who develop new illnesses unrelated to their alcohol use quit drinking, making the group of alcohol abstainers appear less healthy than those who consume alcohol at low or moderate levels.

In 2018, the National Institutes of Health initiated a large randomized control trial – the gold standard for understanding causal relationships – to look into the benefits of moderate drinking.

That trial was designed to pick up the heart benefits of consuming one drink a day, but was not going to be able to detect the negative consequences of moderate alcohol use, such as increases in breast cancer. Because of its inability to pick up on known alcohol-related harms and concerns that the study was co-funded by the alcohol industry, the trial was halted after a few months.

It Was Supposed to Be an Unbiased Study of Drinking. They Wanted to Call It ‘Cheers.’

The director of the nation’s top health research agency pulled the plug on a study of alcohol’s health effects without hesitation on Friday, saying a Harvard scientist and some of his agency’s own staff had crossed “so many lines” in pursuit of alcohol industry funding that “people were frankly shocked.”

A 165-page internal investigation prepared for Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, concluded that Kenneth J. Mukamal, the lead investigator of the trial, was in close, frequent contact with beer and liquor executives while designing the study.

Buried in that document are disturbing examples of the coziness between the scientists and their industry patrons. Dr. Mukamal was eager to allay their concerns, respond to their questions and suggestions, and secure the industry’s buy-in.

My point was that we get conflicting "studies" every year on this stuff as well as all types of food and diets.

Of course we do, truth vs industry.  I am going to go ahead and believe the studies that aren't funded by the food industry, Big Pharma, and the alcohol industry.

Quite a few people have often ask me it it bothers me if they drink in front of me,I tell them that if I wanted to drink I`d stop at the liquor store and drink them under the table, and when they passed out I`d go hit the bars until 2 AM or until I got thrown out or arrested.

I have no desire to ever drink again......people like those mentioned above are just fucking plain old stupid.

At other times working the door at a bar in sobriety, guys that would never buy me a drink if I was dying for one would offer all night to buy me a few after they found out I was quitting booze, another guy I know asked me to taste his rock glass of JD.....I asked him if he didn`t think it was JD to take it back to the bartender.....he insisted I taste it until I had to tell him to fuck off.

People don`t like to see you better yourself, they like to keep you on their level cuz they don`t have the balls to quit, in spite of the fact that they know they are nothing but garden variety drunks with no intestinal fortitude.

lol - I know it sounds odd

dehydration causes your body to hold onto water - and your stomach pulls water from other parts of the body.

I'll believe common sense and observation. Everybody doing these studies is funded by somebody.

Didn't Jesus make some wine at a party when everyone was already drunk and people wondered why they'd saved the best for last?

“Common sense and observation” is how you end up thinking the world is flat

My point was that we get conflicting "studies" every year on this stuff as well as all types of food and diets.

No we dont  ???

Share a recent (5 years or less) peer-reviewed study showing the beneficial effects of alcohol consumption.  You cant, because they dont exist.

You’ve been bamboozled by the alcohol industry into believing their propaganda, and you are couching it in some “maybe the truth is in the middle” nonsense.
