Vince, my post wasn't about your business, it was about you, man.

And your labor pool days (please show me what labor pool pays several hundred dollars per day to do parking lot event help).

I've been in business 6 months... still very new to it ya know.  After 5 years, I don't know what I'll be doing.  Hopefully I'll be managing a small team of like-minded, profitsharing individuals as we grow our media/promotional/web presence company.  Anyone looking for a job?  ;)

That's right, only 6 months.  You only have book knowledge and no real word experience.  You'll find that out the hard way I suppose.

I'm up to learn about the things I don't know in order to compete more effectively.  Yes, I have only been in business full time for 6 or 7 months now.  But before that, i had corp proj mgmt experience, i had 6 years in the classroom as a teacher, and 5 running a university website.

Vince, if I can learn for you, speak on it.  Tell us what you have learned in the 5 years you've been in business that us book guys wouldn't know. thanks!

For starters you need to redo your website and not showcase just fitness related sites you've done.  You need to market to other venues as well so put some of the other non-fitness related sites up as well.  Also get rid of the "specializes in fitness websites".  It's pretty much telling everyone that if you're not in the fitness business, then find someone else.  You have to be the Jack of all Trades and not just one.  If you visit my website, you can get Kynoselen and Vasapro Ephedrine but you can also purchase senior citizen products like garlic tablets and Norweigen Cod Liver Oil.

Also, if you're going to run a business, how about listing a toll-free number for people to contact you.  You're losing a lot of money right now not having one.  Some people like to hear a human voice before making a purchase.  My toll free number routes my customers to my personal cell in which I can take an order even when I'm out on the road.  Very cheap to do, pal

Also, your e-commerce section needs to service more than just Paypal.  Most business such as mine uses an actual merchant account and does not rely on Paypal.  You need to add merchant account e-commerce solution and if you already do, then give a description.  If you don't have it, then a small investment in developer ecommerce software is all you need and that doesn't cost much.  Lift Studios uses Cubecart for his clients which gives his clients maximum flexability.  The design matrix is very easy to do as well.  I use Cubecart as well and people can pay directly or use paypal as well.  I also maintain the good old fashioned postal order forms as well.

Finally, get rid of the ad for selling your laptop computer.  Looks very cheesy and no-one give a shit if it was designed by an MBA.  If you want to sell it, then put it on Ebay.

I could go on but mainly you need more flexability in your services especially since this is the only work you do now.

Vince, I appreciate your advice.  And I continually re-evaluate my business model and adjust my skillset to meet when I ascertain to be future client demand based on current trends.

www.300website.com is my niche business, Vince.  It's $300 for a complete site, usually built in less than a week, and I operate with zero overhead.  Three computers at one big desk/recliner.  One big backup server. One bookshelf.

Vince, there are 2 ways to make profit: reduce inputs, or increase outputs.  A 800 number, multiple ecomm systems, multiple niches, ann hurt the numbers right now.  I have no overhead- why jack that up?  When I need to, I will.  But I have a 2 week waiting list right now and I don't spend a penny on advertising.

And I know ya hate the MBA, man... but it's a HUGE advantage in the market.  I don't build pretty artsy sites. I build sites to increase my clients' bottom lines.  I ask them their market, their competitors, their niche, and I help them compete.  For $300, they get a website, but also all the wisdom thye'd like from an MBA who spends all day working with small businesses.

I stay in the fitness industry cause I know it, man.  My clients get a sweet site fast and thye get it cheap. :)

Some of that advice is good but the payment options thing is possibly unnecessary.  Using cc verification isn't all that common or asked for in the web design business.  Generally cheque, bank transfer (very popular) will cut it.  I do agree that paypal is really low class though.  (You're not running an ebay store after all 240).

Expanding to do other types of sites is good but its at the tradeoff of coming across as not a fitness site specialist.  I don't know which idea would be better but 240 I suggest you build two different web design company sites.  Then when people come they can choose your fitness specialist sites page or your general one.  That is probably the better way of handling things.  I know guys who trade under loads of names depending on the aspect of design they are doing (mostly porn actually).

If I were you I would get a general 300$ website page up with plenty of examples of your work and then test the waters with ebay.  You may attract some interest if you write a good copy and have plenty of testimonial evidence.  I don't know, I'm sure there are others involved in that though.

thanks rocket, good advice.

once i learn asp and getbetter with dotnetnuke i'll likely set up a higher end company and do 1-2 sites a month on that end in addition to my 300website work.

I don't hate your MBA because my field of work is in health & fitness so I don't need one.  And offering a proper e-commerce solution like Cubecart or OScommerce is free so there's no money issue.  A toll free number is cheap and available thanks to Kall8 but even putting your personal or cell number is better than nothing

When I started my business, I only did nutritional consulting and personal training.  I didn't have any overhead at all but you don't want to solely depend on a one trick pony to pay your bills.  The money is flowing in right now 240, even I've paid for your services but eventually its going to wind down when the demand is met and you'll need to find additional avenues.  You make your entire living off your business so you'll need to jump on it sooner.  You having an MBA should know that already

Take it from someone who's been running his home business for over 5 years.   You have to stay ahead of the game or you'll fall behind which is what you're doing right now.  Having a niche is ok but eventually someone will come along with a 200website.com.

And to add, you still have to watch out for your competition such as Lift Studios who has a much more powerful resume, longer list of clients, and more experience.  What makes your business better than his??? ???
