dont you thing getting that heavy helped you put the muscle on in the first place?you never looked like you carried that much bodyfat in the back and side pics, impressive change

Getting heavy is useless.  COMPLETELY USELESS.

You should remain as lean as possible.

Reason I ask is because I read an article about a month ago on Olympic weightlifters in the smaller weight classes. It said that these guys would purposely cut their calories to stay at a certain weight, but the amazing thing is that their strength didn't suffer at all, in fact they were still getting stronger in preparation for the competition. I was just trying to see if anyone else experienced this.

Yes!

You will get stronger in a caloric defecit!  You will also BUILD MUSCLE in a caloric defecit.

And the best thing of all, you can eat ANYTHING YOU WANT!

I have more that documents the whole process.

Remember. No cardio,No supplements, 3 days a week at the gym, and Ice Cream and cookies.

I will present this all.  I think this will help people to understand and perhaps accomplish something they always thought was impossible due to some kind of adherence.

TA, if you really did drop that weight using the diet you've been talking about I'm all ears.  I'm looking to drop some fat.  Question is, were you still able to build muscle on this diet or is this diet all about cutting?  I can't see where you're getting the protein or aminos to build anything eating sweets.  Let us know, bro.  Also, you still going heavy on poundages or did you lighten up for more reps?
Everyone is fair game.

I am not trying to discredit what you accomplished, but why sweets? I mean you could stay in a calorie deficit eating chicken breasts and oatmeal, do you think that would net less results, or did you do it this way just cause you wanted to eat the foods that you wanted to eat.

You know, it's funny you mention that, because I actually get stronger while reducing calories, i.e., "cutting". Really odd.

Thing is, everyone else I talk to, seem to be the exact opposite....they lose strength.

I'd like to hear some theories on why this is, if anyone has any........

Of course some will drop because I am at less of a mechanical advantage with a waist in the 20s versus a 38 or 39 inch waist and fat arms.

People get duped and think strength equals muscle.  No thats not it at all.  It has more to do with being at a mechanical advantage.

I could break AAU records now most likely in power to weight.  Before it would be difficult.

This is my true strength and not "Mechanical Strength"

What "mechanical" advantage does excess fat afford you?

That's not even high 20's....I was 29% when I started my diet and I was a LOT fatter than that. My guess would be 20%-18%.

You are very close and his numbers are purposefully exaggerated.

If you cut calories and lose weight very slowly you can maintain you strength and muscle mass to a degree.  There really are a LOT of variables but a significant loss in body fat over a relatively short period of time will result in a loss of strength and lean muscle until the body acclimates and is no longer in a caloric deficit.  For example, I can gain strength now that I am leaner on a lot less calories than I could have when I was in the 230-240 lbs range.

Another interesting phenomenon is that when you dramatically cut calories your strength will initially stay the same or even increase but after 2-3 weeks it will typically start to decline.

When using steroids and some other drugs strength and muscle mass can be increased while getting leaner even over an extended period.  For the natural trainee strength and muscle mass will be decreased if dieting over an extended period (unless it is done VERY slowly).

Finally, demonstrable strength and lean muscle mass are correlated but separate.  You can increase strength without increasing lean muscle mass via optimization of the nervous system and other possible factors.  For example, I am 36 years old and natural.  Any muscle mass I will be able to gain would be very minimal but I should be able to increase my strength for several more years if I train properly.

There is a lot to be said on this whole subject but this thread is not the proper forum.

What "mechanical" advantage does excess fat afford you?

That is a bit of a myth in my opinion although it may have some validity.  Fred Hatfield theorizes that increased body fat and the resulting increased intramuscular fat stores enhance leverage somehow within the musculature itself.

My opinion is that the reason people who use resistance training and eat a lot in order to gain body weight get stronger is because it is part of the body's natural process to not deposit all of those excess calories as body fat.  A small percentage gets deposited as lean muscle tissue.  This increased lean mass results in an increased strength potential which gets realized by the continued resistance training.

You can ask any Olympic or powerlifter and they will tell you increased body weight equals increased strength to a degree.

One more thing, if you are bigger in the gut it can be an advantage when squatting.  You can literally use your gut as a springboard at the bottom of the movement.  A thicker torso results in a decreased ROM for the bench.  These would be a few examples of increased body fat aiding one's lifts.

You are very close and his numbers are purposefully exaggerated.

I did calipers,used a scale and measurments.

I was 30-40 percent bodyfat in those pictures.

If I was 20 percent there, That would make me 205-210 extremely ripped Which does not occur for someone my height and lifetime natural....An impossibility.
