NEW YORK - A baby died after rolling off a bed and falling into a bucket of her teenage mother's vomit at a homeless shelter, police said.

The mother, Savarin DeJesus, 18, was charged with criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child, and could get five years behind bars.

Isn't that already on the table in the UK? Some kind of "super nanny' idea? Since no one is educating these girls on birth control and they can't, or won't, consider abortion, perhaps the govt should step in.

Just make them unable to have kids.

It's an unfair burden on the tax payer. Why should I have to pay for this shit? I'm sick of paying for other peoples mistakes, ideologies etc etc...

If I'm not mistaken they tried that in Nazi Germany a little bit ago, and it didn't exactly work out. I believe at the turn of the 20th century, there was a movement like that in the States. Also didn't work out because of course, you are infringing on the freedoms that a democracy espouses. If only the religious among us would worry more about what ends up in the world, rather than what doesn't... also, it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that this girl a) had no education regarding birth control, b) had a stringently catholic upbringing so abortion was not an option and c) was probably thrown into the street when she became pregnant.

(High taxes are a bummer, but they do result in the streets being safer and cleaner.)

I think that ordering castration is wrong for so many reasons.

A more viable solution along your line of thinking, might be to offer a financial incentive to the babymaking poor, to get their tubes tied.  If an unemployed single woman with 2 kids, aged 18, were offered $10k to get her tubes tied, she might do it.  The money could be used for the kids/her education, and it would be far cheaper than supporting her NEXT 3 kids with welfare for the next 18 years.

Of course there would be abuses...

This is common in NYC. Black and hispanic mothers mishandling or even sometimes beating their children to death.

Look up Nixmary Brown, hearing about that little girl brought tears to my eyes.

blacks, whites and hispanics that live in poverty have much higher rates of child mishandling because they're the one's with the highest rates of teenage pregnancy. These teenagers are kids themselves, so how can they raise a child sucessfully?

Then it's an issue of poverty not race.

Furthermore, this was not a case of a woman mishandling her child. It was a case of a girl passing out, and her baby falling into a bucket of vomit. Let's not forget, she was in a homeless shelter. Had she been in a stable home environment with a crib for her baby, the baby would not have gotten into the bucket. It's tragic, ...but I don't know if it's a case of criminally negligent homicide.

Female infanticide is still rampant in India. 20 out of every 100 is aborted. Isn't killing as bad as mishandling?

Perhaps I should qualify my statement a little. I simply don't believe early abortion (6 weeks pregnant or less) is killing a living, viable human being. This is mostly the gist of my feelings about this in a nutshell. I have huge misgivings about later term abortions. I don't see anything wrong with the Morning After pill, other than it might encourage some girls to be irresponsible. I believe women who want their children will instinctively have a connection from the start, whereas those who don't/are desperate have none...meaning I believe the connection is purely psychological. (There's a thread about this on the Open Girl Discussion board.) I just don't think children should be brought into the world to die at 4 months in a bucket of vomit.
