Think about it, most pros never win any money or get sponsored anyway. Hell some of the sponsored guys aren't even competitors. All we need is an amateur organization like the old days with guys competing in state shows like Mr California, Mr Ohio etc and then you move on to say the Jr America then Mr America and ultimately the Universe. Then they could have one show a year with all the Universe winners competing together like the Olympia was before guys had pro status. Forget about all the fancy back drops and needless crap and put the money into lighting and sound and keep the tickets reasonably priced. Also, I think it should be up to the promoter as to whether he wanted to have a separate prejudging and finals.

In 10 years there wont even be pro bodybuilding.
Just look at whats happened in the past few months.
1. Female bodybuilding in replaced with womens physique ( thank god )
2. Top supplement companies are pulling their booths from the olympia.
3. The addition of mens "physique"
4. AMI/Weider go bankrupt, yet again.
Thats just a few things off the top of my head.
But when all the supp companies pull out and Weider/AMI go under for good. Sadly there wont be bodybuilding as we know it anymore.

That's exactly why someone needs to start an amateur org. Guys should compete because they like to not because they think that they are going to become rich and famous. The "general public" will NEVER like BBing I don't care what they do to try and make it more appealing.

LOL...Interesting take.
Where do you get your facts from?
1. WPD will INCREASE the interest in women who like to lift weights without going to the extreme of FBB, and put many more athletes on stage, and butts in the seats
2. HUH? Obviously, you werent at the Olympia this year....and supp companies come and go all the time, it's the nature of the business.
3. MPD....added to expand the brand to even more that like to compete and lift weights...opening up more opportunities to a wider audience...which only increases the exposure yo OUR world of BB
4. AMI and WEIDER are two different companies....Weider will be around a loooong time to come with Eric Weider at the helm, it's in good hands
-
LOL are you guys all holding hands and sharing the computer? ;D

Come on Jim....you know as well as I do that no one in the history of BB, has ever gotten into it for the money, or to become rich and famous...
I couldnt care less if the GP ever likes BB...never have, never will....it's the FITNESS industry as a whole that we need to appeal to more, which is why the changes of late have taken place....something they should have been doing a long time ago.

Hey Chick, I thought Eric wasn't too interested in taking the helm so to speak?

So you're saying Ronnie should have never won those contests and they should have awarded the O's to someone more slender that appeals to the public better than a 300 pound juice monkey?

I think we are in total agreement. You are talking about the fitness industry yes, but men's bbing doesn't fit into the category.

They are facts and you're backing them up.
If bodybuilding as it is today then why would you be restructuring it as you are with new mens and womens physique categories?
Why the need to put more butts in the seats if everything is so great already?
Bodybuilding is in one of the worst positions it has been in since ive been following it.
I still stand by what I say and that in 10 years theres just going to be figure, womens physique, mens physique and maybe a classical division.
The day of a 250lbs man on a boatload of drugs will be no more. Whats happened with physiques the last 10 years has made bodybuilding so unappealing that its turned off just about any young person in their right minds from doing so. Just look at this years amateur shows ( especially nationals ) as proof. There is just no more talent in that small pool anymore.
-
all supps are crap ,only one worth a shit is creatine.. bodybuilding is alllll drugs sad but true
-
bodybuilding is a drug game and we all know that
those who say no are LIARS and don't want to make themselfs look bad
drug tests are also bullshit, one of my buddys is an international weight lifter and he is on a TON of drugs and he passed tests
bodybuilding is 90% drugs
-
LOL are you guys all holding hands and sharing the computer? ;D
Post of the day! ;D

So you're saying Ronnie should have never won those contests and they should have awarded the O's to someone more slender that appeals to the public better than a 300 pound juice monkey?
No, Thats not what I'm saying at all....My point is that we as an industry should have been "expanding the brand" many many years ago...not just keeping ourselves as a nitche sport, which is limiting and doesnt open up the world of bodybuilding to anyone other than the one's who are already into it...which is why it has STAYED a nitche sport...
Adding a Mens physique division has nothing to do with the Mens BB division....
-
just think how bodybuilding would be if there were no drugs? i will be honest its because seeing these guys in mags is the reason i started using... just imagine who many have the chance of being pros if there were no steroids imn bodybuilding im sure alot of people on getbig could be.but that will never happen even natural show guys use gear...

Geez, I dont know...why try and create more/ new business? The money in pro BB is at it's all time best, contracts are in abundance and more and more athletes are able to supplement thir income (if not make a living) from the many avenues of bodybuilding business...
So what do you believe the "worst positions" are that you talk of? Worst according to who?
That said....you can stick to your opinion, and predict the end is near all you want....I heard the same thing 10, 15 and 20 years ago....
-
Adding a Mens physique division has nothing to do with the Mens BB division....
Quite the opposite.......like flexingtonsqueal said.......you're proving the point you are trying not to.
If mens BBing is doing so well, why the need to "expand the brand"?
Mens BB can't cut it on it's own anymore, so they add a Mens Physique division........now these guys have to pay their dues and their families will pay to go to the shows......
It's a smart business move Chickadildo, but to say it has nothing to do with mens BBing just isn't true, it's an effort to bring in more customers to save mens BBing from whithering away to nothing. :)

So by your reasoning I should be looking forward to a new nfl, nba, and mlb leagues in the near future. Because business is so good, it can only get better.
If things are going good you dont change it, come on Bob you know that. If it aint broke, dont fix it!
And if the contracts were so great and more people are able to support their incomes then why is a guy like troy alves who has just won a pro show in the past year and placed top five in multiple other shows just recently not even able to afford to be able to do the mr.olympia this year until he got a last minute contract with some european supplement company.
But I probably just got my facts wrong. Right Bob.

Yeah...actually you do. It would be business suicide to ever believe that you never need to chnge anything, or move with the times.
You use the NFL , etc as a example...but they make change more often than anyone...despite the millions that come in. No, they dont need to add "divisions", but they are different animal all togetehr than BB....rule changes, uniform changes, playing in London, expanding the season, etc, etc....why make ANY change, right? They were doing just fine as it was....

Face it Bob, bodybuilding is on the outs. There isn't nearly as many people interested in building a physique that's over 200lbs, let alone want to compete or become a pro bodybuilder. I remember when little kids and teens would see a big guy and have respect for him. Now days kids think it's stupid and people are realizing big muscle usually equals steroids. Look at the quality on stage at the nationals and even Olympia for that matter. Across the board the quality is down and interest is down. Yes, the fitness aspect is on the rise but next generations Ronnie Colemans or Flex Wheelers aren't out there.
Being a freak is no longer cool. Bodybuilding is no longer cool and being a competitive bodybuilder is frowned upon more than ever.

LOL....when It was just as frowned upon when I started back in 79-80.
It's on the outs, yet the Olympia prize money is nearing 1 Million, was a near sellout, (as was the Pres conference/ Seminar) and had more attending the Meet the Olympians than ever with almost 2,000 attending...
Let me know when it's "on the outs"

Bitter about what, exactly? I make a living lifting weights....you talk about BB on the internet.

Adding a game in london or being a little easier on the qb is far different than adding a whole new division like what bodybuilding is doing.
Just in the past couple of years, bikini, womens physique, and mens physique has been added. This isnt a minor change, these are whole new divisions being added to the mix.
Which to me says, what we are doing now isnt working, lets jump off this sinking ship while we can boys and get this thing going in the right direction.
And those rookies who have signed publication contracts are doing quite well, I know Zach Khan is doing great after being dropped by weider after only a year, so is Dennis Wolf who's contract with weider lasted only one year, or how about former mr.olympia from just a few years ago dexter jackson who doesnt even have a magazine contract and who iovate dropped to their six star supplement ads. Or how about a melvin anthony who is a mulitple top six olympia competitor and just won a pro show this year not being able to afford to compete for the rest of the year and signing up for emt school or whatever he did.
Thats just off the top of my head and what ive heard from others. There are many many more examples.
Bob you and I know outside of Jay, Phil, Branch and a few others nobody is making any respectable amount of money from bodybuilding. And buy respectable I mean six figures ( which isnt that much) . Which is very very sad.
-
pros sell gear. i had friends in orlando fl buying gear from a pro who lives in florida dexter something or other...
-
Men's bbing is (or was) the foundation for it all. Adding bikini and fagure isn't the way to go about it. That's like the NFL revamping the cheerleading squad in order to make football more popular.

Change is change...which was used to illustrate a point. If it's working, why change it, Is what you said....
Again...using individuals to make a point of contracts...lets talk about them:
Zack Kahn- has yet to even compete...
Wolf- Was with MD, signed with Weider, Just signed back with MD...seems to be doing ok with a 5th at the O, and MORE money in his pocket
Dexter- Iovate owns many different brands, MT, Six Star, Muscle Asylum, etc....they routinely rotate their guys...is he making less money?
Melvin- Has been with NUMEROUS companies over the years...placing well isnt an automatic pass to a contract
How do you know the particulars of ANY of these guys, or anyone else for thatr matter. How about if someone was a shitty spokesman? You think that doesnt matter to companies? How about if the athlete was a pain in the ass?
I'm a perfect example of someone outside of the top 6 Olympians that makes a great living from BB, as does Shawn Ray, Dave P, Dan Solomon, writers, promoters, etc
-

Slowly, but surely, Mens physique will evolve into a lightweight version of men's bodybuilding, just like Fitness did with women's bodybuilding...and then they will add a Mens Athletic division, and so on...

Again...using individuals to make a point of contracts...lets talk about them:
Zack Kahn- has yet to even compete...
Had a contract for one year with weider, im sure he really "filled his pockets" during those 12 months. I wonder what the 401k is like with that weider contract.
Wolf- Was with MD, signed with Weider, Just signed back with MD...seems to be doing ok with a 5th at the O, and MORE money in his pocket. Great for Dennis he was able to sign with MD, but if Weider was doing so great, then why would they let a guy go who is one of the most popular competitors out there and a top five olympia guy.
Dexter- Iovate owns many different brands, MT, Six Star, Muscle Asylum, etc....they routinely rotate their guys...is he making less money? Yes he is making less money because he was just a mr.olympia, and now hes without a magazine contract, thats like a super bowl mvp being without a job two seasons after he won the award while still playing great ball ( dexter was 4th at this years O)
Melvin- Has been with NUMEROUS companies over the years...placing well isnt an automatic pass to a contract Ok, ill take that, but not only is melvin a top placing pro, but he has one of the best personalities on any bodybuilder and is a great speaker, what company wouldnt want to have this guy signed to a contract.
How do you know the particulars of ANY of these guys, or anyone else for thatr matter. How about if someone was a shitty spokesman? You think that doesnt matter to companies? How about if the athlete was a pain in the ass?
I dont know its just kinda fishy. Its like being an nba all star but not getting offered a contract the next offseason in free agency. Just doesnt make sense.
I'm a perfect example of someone outside of the top 6 Olympians that makes a great living from BB, as does Shawn Ray, Dave P, Dan Solomon, writers, promoters, etc.
And finally none of these guys are pro bodybuilders, which is one of the big things wrong in bodybuilding. The bodybuilders arent the ones making the money. If anyone is, its the people who arent competing who are.
-
Lets just say that there are those that are their own worst enemies...
Concerning Zack....yes, he had a 1 year contract....what did he do in that year? Opted out to not compete, then got injured....What did you expect the company to do?
-
I long for the days when bbing shows were held in old gymnasiums, the guys had tiny waits and wore posing trunks not thongs. :'(

Okay I will
Bodybuilding is the only "sport" that has regressed in the past 20 years.
The physiques from the 80's and 90's are so much better than the piles of shit we see onstage now its not even funny.
-
With all this so-called 'progress' in bodybuilding (prize money, more contracts, etc), why is it that the actual standard of physique seems to be regressing?
I have yet to hear of any initiatives from the policy makers to rein in obvious synthol use, huge waists, inappropriate posing routines, etc.
An increase of money is in no way a reflection on the QUALITY of an endeavour.

A lot of good points here. The main thing that I see wrong is that the talent is getting old in professional bodybuilding. Young people are not participating, and it is already showing at the top. If you took out Jay, Branch, Dex, Kai, Vic, & Phil; talent gets VERY thin. Sure, the Olympia & Arnold do well, but the circuit shows are nothing more than Olympia qualifiers with poor attendance. Bodybuilding needs to draw young talent, but instead of addressing that problem, the IFBB decided to add totally new divisions?? What about helping bodybuilding?

I understand that, but evolution always happens, slowly, the men's physique will look like the LHW or LW division in NPC, like the fitness girls evolved into the late 80s-early 90s female bbers, and the figure girls evolved int to the fitness look...
Or how men's bbing evolved from the 80s to the late 90s mass monsters...
-
A lot of good points here.
Very true, teen bbing is almost non existent.
-
If you listened to Lee Haney's interview, he was spot on the money. I can remember back in the 1990's we would have teenagers/youngmen in the gym with their Flex magazines discussing Flex, Shawn, Kevin, Lee, Mike, etc.
Now? People would like to look like The Situation or the other guy from Jersey Shore. There's one on there that was muscular and women still found him attractive....
I think that the problem is that the physiques look horrible and aren't inspirational. It appeals to a fringe group.
As was said on here, people wanted to look like Arnold. I remember reading several articles where Lee Haney said women came up to him and told him how nice his body was.
ANd from my own personal experience...if you don't look ridiculous, people do admire and like a musclebound physique.
Anyway Bob you talk about BB and it's growth...I'd be curious if you could tell us profit margins and what you forecast in the general future.
-
Bodybuilding is the only "sport" that has regressed in the past 20 years.
The physiques from the 80's and 90's are so much better than the piles of shit we see onstage now its not even funny.
True in 9 out of 10 cases... :'(

What's sickening is the former head of this so-called sport died with 1 BILLION DOLLARS in his account...1 BILLION FUCKING DOLLARS...
The top purse in bodybuilding is 200k...Hell, the total prize money from the Olympia (Mr., Ms., Fitness, Figure and now Bikini) doesn't even reach 1 Million...How much you want to bet most of that money comes from sponsors...if not all...FUCKING PATHETIC...
Like I stated in a post last week...when Arnold tried to raise the purse in his show Papa Joe said no because the Olympia was the most prestigious show and he wasn't going to raise the Olympia purse and at the time it was 110k I believe...
I won't speak ill of the dead or near dead...I'll leave it at that...
I don't think Phil Heath knows how much he has this "sport" by the balls..If he leaves who are they going to promote? Kai?...Yea....No...he's a mess..Branch doesn't have a Mr. O physique, Jay is in the twilight of his career, Dexter is old...I see Cedric McMillan and that's it...Wolfe? Um...no...Scent-of-panties? Yeah, whenever he gets the urge to compete...What this "sport" needs is legit talent and contenders...It's not going to happen because people now there is no money to be made in this sport...You have to spend money to make it...and this "sport" is fucked up in so many ways now i couldn't tell you why anyone would ever want to get into it...I like bodybuilding but PROFESSIONAL and AMATEUR COMPETITIVE bodybuilding SUCKS and HARD...Whenever I'm here in Vegas and I see some bright eyed 19 year old kid looking to "live the dream" I ensure I tell him the total truth about what to expect or in most cases....what not to expect...The internet was the worst thing to happen to this sport in terms of keeping the facade...and the best thing for fans or competitors to find out what really goes on...
We have voiced our opinions countless times and on many forums and they continue to be ignored...in no particular order...
1. Change the posing trunks...
2. Take the emphasis off shredded glutes...
3. Really penalize those with ANY signs of guts, gyno, synthol or any other non-pleasing anomaly....and quantify this...e.g. 1 point added if: XXX
4. Actually judge the show according to the way the old rules where written...Muscularity round, symmetry, posing, etc...doing this will weed out the guts, and 5'8 270lb barrels of garbage.
5. Ban any kind of sexual displays...ass shaking and butt gyrating or anything else that can be defined as "faggotry"
6. Prize money for last place in the O should be at least 25k and the top prize should be 500k...working its way up to 1 million over the course of 5 years...With that, there should only be 10 slots open for the O...not anyone that qualifies...that keeps the contest prestigious and puts more meaning into the small shows because it forces bodybuilders to compete and gives the smaller shows more credence which brings in more fans which brings in more money...BTW...Only the top 3 in the Mr. O get qualifications for next year...
7. Any bodybuilder that guest poses looking like ass...gets fined for "putting the sport in a negative light"...I know it sounds funny now but if it was cleaned up with would be needed..what does ass look like? See Kai Greene at 300lbs at 5'8 in the 3rd trimester...But with smaller and more "inshape" guys under the rules I put above it wouldn't be as much as a problem.
8. Posing WILL BE JUDGED....No dancing or stripper routines...Best posing awards...3rd place 20k, 2nd, 40k and 1st 75k....Betcha you'd see some decent routines then...
This is a start....I could go on if needed...

-
LOL...Interesting take.
4. AMI and WEIDER are two different companies....Weider will be around a loooong time to come with Eric Weider at the helm, it's in good hands
youll be out of a job pretty soon bobby-say bye bye to your silly bodybuilding world
looks like u should have saved for your future instead of blowing your money on dumb clunker cars and ugly pirate costumes

yep, with a weider at the helm...........you definitely dont have to worry about any money leaking out to those pesky bodybuilders (you know, the backs the empire was built on)
joe and ben are two loathsome individuals.........soon joe will pass as well, no doubt with as much or more money in the bank then his brother.........and like jews do, he will of course set his family up..............but leave NOTHING to the sport he exploited
nothign, no insurance or health fund.......no raising of prize money..........NOTHING.. .......only exploitation
it is gut wrenching that these two greedy lecherous old homosexuals are revered and not reviled by the bigger bodybuilding fan-base

no we dont, part of it

Yeah...actually you do. It would be business suicide to ever believe that you never need to chnge anything, or move with the times.
You use the NFL , etc as a example...but they make change more often than anyone...despite the millions that come in. No, they dont need to add "divisions", but they are different animal all togetehr than BB....rule changes, uniform changes, playing in London, expanding the season, etc, etc....why make ANY change, right? They were doing just fine as it was....
You use ONE guy to illustrate your point, while I can name 10 that have signed contracts as AMATEURS, or signed publication contracts as rookies....it's not even debatable that the money in pro BB is better now than ever in the history of the sport...
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH CHICK..actually getbig.com is a perfect example it used to be only bodybuilders and wanna be soon bodybuilders/powerlifters would goto getbig or other boards. but as it-
meaning bodybuilding,,, has continued to gain popularity year by year, u also have the internet-talking heads who are little people and really know nothing about bodybuilding. they never compete ,they hardly train. but like on nfl message boards everyones got an opinion and they think they know better than the people with years n years in the sport and get paid to do it.
this is why u wanna expand all parts of the sport .as to gain more fans and more money ie business 101!!!!
you have to understand you want everyone not just the hardcore as it was back in the mid 90s, when all it was was guys who competed or were gonna start competin.
just look at the getbig.com buisness model its basic money makin 101. this is what bodybuilding is doin and why it will get bigger and bigger as it always, always has..
if you have been in the bodybuilding world for 20+ years this is very obvious that its bigger now than even when we had big arnold n franco....back in 1982 i did a theme paper for english on arnold s , and noone in the room even knew who he was...i predicted back then he would be a mega movie star and president in the future
-
What's sickening is the former head of this so-called sport died with 1 BILLION DOLLARS in his account...1 BILLION FUCKING DOLLARS...
Did he make all that money putting on bodybuilding shows or selling supps?
The latter has always been where the $$ is bodybuilding. You don't hear Lee Labrada whining about the Weiders. He started his own company and got rich.
Bodybuilders don't get rich competing because they don't put asses in the seats.
-
LOL @ everybody claiming bodybuilders don't make money.
You keep comparing pro bb to football, basketball etc professional leagues... That's the case in America. Pretty much everywhere else for example basketball players barely earn anything.
And there is tons of sports where athletes earn probably less than bodybuilders. Take some fucking swimming; not much money involved. Same goes with most of track and field athletes... few make decent money, rest of them barely anything. World class javelin thrower (done good in numerous events, wone bronze in Olympics in 2008, world champion 2007) made about 200k a year in 2008 when he was at the top...
And these are just few examples.
I can't understand why you guys are whining about money that top bodybuilders make! It's pretty decent money when you take in count how small this sport actually is.
Of course only thing I would change in pro bb is the prize money. They deserve more. But that's not making them the worst paid athletes in world... far from that.

No. Bodydoping sucks big time. With but a few differences in our opinions on this matter, Sir Wiggs is correctomundo.
One problem is that few outside HomoLand care to see bloated turds in thongs. Family and friends come to mind, but unless you're one of those it's not likely your gonna wanna be dragged to what amounts to a festival of fags more than once in your lifetime.
I hate drugs in bodydoping. It's fake muscle that leaves quickly once you get off. Worse still, there's far too much of it. Again, Wiggs is right but I seriously doubt anyone of these floaters is going to be penalized much less banned so long as Cirque du SoGhey (aka: the Size Queen audience) pays the bills. Homosexuality is disgusting. Schmoe-ism either for dope and oil filled men or "women" is rampant within this pastime. It's NOT a sport. Not remotely and anyone that thinks so is athletically and mentally challenged. And probably a striated gluteous loving, penis or penoris craving wussbag of a person. A schmomosexual.
Until normal people gain control of this hobby, it will continue to be nothing more than a festival for the testicles. Homos gone wild. If that's what you want, you know who you are. There's no way in Hell I'd pay good money for that crap.
And for the record, there's only one Arnold, but fuck that idiot semi-liberal political turncoat. There's no way in Hades I'd ever vote for him for President and thank the Buddha that twat-waffle can't run for that office. He's shown he's a RINO and the only things he's really conservative with are his own family and money.
Oh, yeah. Wiggster pretty much has it nailed.

There is no real money to be made for what people put themselves through. The drugs, the food, the gurus all cost money. It's a lose-win situation. Talk to most former competitors and they will tell you it wasn't worth it.

Of course only thing I would change in pro bb is the prize money.
The NY Pro is held in a 1000 seat venue. If you do the math, it's easy to see why the prize money is so small.
-
bodybuilding a sport. lmao
-
Wiggs,
You've made some excellent points with your list. Only issue I have is with number five. You, as well as anyone else, know that there is a strong homosexual influence in this sport. Why would you try to ban anything that displays or insinuates faggotry?
Why would this industry bite the hand that feeds them?

Watch it guys this thread will be gone soon, manion or one of the other head schmoes will be on the phone with Bob or Ron screaming at them to delete this thread or they won't get a press pass at the next Olympia

Rep...By "faggotry" I meant the way Getbig defines it...I meant no offense to actual homosexuals...I'd like to take any blatant or insinuated sexuality out of the sport and bring it back to an art form....Most of Kai's posing routines I like but when I could care less about the upside down butt gyrating thing...His 09 Arnold routine was incredible minus what I said...I understand people can debate what is sexual in nature and what is not...that's fine...Blatant things we can start with...it's offensive to some people in the audience and not necessary...those that wish obtain any sexual gratification can use their imagination...
Bodybuilding could be so much better than it is, I don't understand why those in power wouldn't want to see the sport improve unless they had their own motives, just didn't care or can't see the big picture...Not that he'd ever do this cause I doubt he cares as much as we do but Arnold is the only one that could really do something.
-

I don't understand why...I think for the most part the thread is tasteful...We are looking out for the best interest of the sport...The old guard's time has past...If I had the money, I would put my money were my mouth was...
-
One more thing...as much as I like having the Olympia in my hometown...It needs to move around to different states AND COUNTRIES...
The least the Weiders could have done (if it's not already done and I just didn't know about it) is invest some money into creating a bodybuilding Hall of Fame Building...(more than likely in Venice)...Like Baseball (obviously not as much money)...I think that'd be really nice.

Might be my memory playing tricks but wasn't that actually the case for many many many years???
Are you ridiculously young or have you dementia?

Yes of course it was...1998 was the last time it was in another place outside Las Vegas (New York)...I'm saying it should go back to that. Like the Superbowl, there are a list of different set venues they chose from...it should rotate...Las Vegas, Somewhere in Cali, Somewhere in Texas, Somewhere on the East Coast...Somewhere in Germany, Somewhere in Great Britain...Research would have to be done to find the most viable places...I'm just giving examples from the top of my head...

Seriously; Not a bad idea IMO. But one must wonder what were the reasons why Olympia was 'permanently' located in Las Vegas!
What was the explanation given at the time? I can't remember... For sure there must have been some reason?
Back in the day Olympia was held in some very random places like Finland where the fan base isn't large enough. So as you said some serious research must be done to find best places... otherwise Mr O 2015 is held in some fkin' Somalia ;D ;D

as a disheartened figure competitor, i am truly excited about the addition of the WPD - although the name leaves something to be desired... i used to do "bodybuilding" but found that without an insane amount of drugs, i could never really be competitive with whats on stage now.. for a small time, the figure has given me a place to be - although i absolutely hate where its going.. there is no commonality of judging.. one show, a girl that is soft and never lifted a weight before will win, the next - a ripped and hard one takes it.. its too much of a guessing game. there is no fairness and equality, no way to know what the judges are looking for.. the WPD should fit me much better, because i put on muscle easily, with very minimal drug help - and the ones i do work with are more for the fat control vs size/strength, so i like to think that i have kept my womanly face and features while bringing some fairly hardcore muscle to the table.. in this new division, i hope to bring back the sensuality of those great names from the 80s, early 90s like rachel, cory, anja, etc.. i can actually see a light at the end of my competitive tunnel - maybe i have a chance to become pro with the WPD - because unless i get some dirt on my knees for these ball holding judges, i will never place in their clique-ish figure shows.
i sincerely hope too tho, that mens BB stays in place, but goes back to its core beliefs - the men will never shrink down to arnolds size again, but if they could once again bring quality to the stage, i think it would help boost momentum.. arnold was special cause the average joe could look at him and think, 'with a ton of hard work and dedication, maybe i could look like that'.. he helped build excitement with personality and machismo, along with being a freak.. now, all anyone can say is 'wow! those guys are huge! how much drugs did it take to get there?" i am a die hard fan for this sport, but it needs to have a human element brought back to it. i do think that the mens side should stick to bodybuilding specifically, but thats just the snob in me coming out.. lol (i do like the muscle on my mans..) i think the women need more options because not everyone wants to go do a gymnastic routine, or become an ape.. we need some options. and i highly highly agree that the $$ needs to be put back into the athletes, across the board. more support to those up n comers.. more stringent ideals to get someone winning and qualified. smaller groups in the olympia, maybe even the arnold.. make people work for it.. just my thoughts.. im excited on where this sport is going - or has the chance to go to. and i thank bob for his work and dedication to it too.. there are some good peeps out there..

Post a face pic, let getbig judge if you've kept your femininity.
Or are you scared there will be repercussions from the IFBB if you do? :)

i used to do "bodybuilding" but found that without an insane amount of drugs, i could never really be competitive with whats on stage now..
That's how most men in bodybuilding feel as well. Guys who win a couple of NPC local competitions take a look at national level NPC competitors and then realize that in order to even get as far as those other guys, they will seriously need to up their dosage.
i sincerely hope too tho, that mens BB stays in place, but goes back to its core beliefs - the men will never shrink down to arnolds size again, but if they could once again bring quality to the stage, i think it would help boost momentum.. arnold was special cause the average joe could look at him and think, 'with a ton of hard work and dedication, maybe i could look like that'.. he helped build excitement with personality and machismo, along with being a freak..
Back in the 70's and 80's, no average joe ever thought he could like Arnold with enough work and dedication. To those folks back then (Yeah, back in the time where the average American man looked like a member of the BeeGees) Arnold looked like the equivalent of what Ronnie now looks to us. There were aspects of Arnold that many could attain with a decent amount of hard work (i.e. his forearms), but, on average, no one thought they could get to Arnold's level.
now, all anyone can say is 'wow! those guys are huge! how much drugs did it take to get there?" i am a die hard fan for this sport, but it needs to have a human element brought back to it. i do think that the mens side should stick to bodybuilding specifically, but thats just the snob in me coming out.. lol (i do like the muscle on my mans..) i think the women need more options because not everyone wants to go do a gymnastic routine, or become an ape..
That's exactly how many professional bodybuilders also feel. Guys like Martinez and Shawn Ray never wanted to look like Apes, but had to up their dosages and sacrifice the same look that got them their pro cards to begin with. Guys like Chick never wanted to lose their classic lines. You think Arnold looks at these modern day pros and considers them aesthetically pleasing? He is probably disgusted.

Oh, yeah. Wiggster pretty much has it nailed.
wow where do i start with this?
I can't tell if you're having a meltdown...or you're just an attention-whore thinking your little puns are funny.
If you truly feel this way, i suggest you try another forum. (Preferably not bodybuilding related) because from what im reading you can't stand homosexuals.
nor be around them. Plus factor in the point you made about "Fake muscle" ::) .... Id love to see you get a new federation off the ground where the athletes are drug tested-and purely hetero...because technically...if you made everyone on stage PROOVE they're hetero, you and the entire audience watching men in truncs isn't gonna be the least bit gay...yeah...way to go dickhead. :D
Not a sport...i can tell you just like to go to the gym and are aspiring to maybe one day compete. to that i reply "do it". and im being real here.
compete in bodybuilding, and do it PROPERLY (dont pull a Goodrum) and then see if you still feel the same way...
Although...you might not do it. you'll never get the grasp of what this SPORT is all about. how the people involved learn to respect eachother because we all work hard and aim to better ourselves... Its a sport where you and you alone can better yourself, and you set goals, and work hard towards them. learn discipline, learn your body, and appreciate that our bodies can do some pretty incredible things.
you'll probably be a shmoe trolling these boards in 15 years....reminiscing about the past and sounding like MANY people i've heard before " OH YEAH WELL...I WAS GONNA COMPETE BUT..." or "IF I WOULD HAVE STEPPED ON STAGE BACK IN THE DAY I WOULD HAVE SHOWN THEM..."
but you'd probably use your TOO MANY FAGS excuse, or TOO MANY DRUGGED UP ATHLETES scenario...wtv.
Homos have been around for a fuckin long time...(its not gonna change, only get "worse") i mean hell, you probably have a few family member or two that came out of the closet and maybe that's why you're so bitter... don't take it out on bodybuilding, coupled with the fact you probably have a sub-par physique with a sub-par work ethic...
it boggles the mind why you even post here...but if you look at the sport and see TOO MUCH DRUGS...(you're a small little fruitcake and got small-man complex) and if the sport looks too gay to you...well than that's just your opinion, its 2010...unless you come from the south or are frequenting the baptist church, you're just naive, and shouldn't follow a sport like this (which is very ON THE FENCE in terms of how its perceived by general public, so you might wanna stick with football or something more "safe" for your image since you have issues with gayness.). - that in itself is gayer than... hahaha ok ill stop now.
to the rest of getbig, sorry i had to go in on this douche, the opportunity to put him in his place and him never recovering was too great!

Is everyone in your family "special" like you or did they sterilize your mother and her brother right after you were born? Meltdown? Typical response from a sheeple of GetBig. Lookie here Tennessee Tuxedo, it's like this. I am not the one you are looking for. This isn't the film "Taken" and outside of biting off the heads of live gophers for shots of cheap whiskey, you don't possess a particular set of skills. In other words...
Holy Buddha, but you are ignorant.

Yup. I am most likely much older than you and I suspect you're in much better shape than I. Thanks again for that excellent clip in the Memory Lane thread. People say we can't go back, but if what has happend is going forward, I'm firing up the Way-Back Machine. ;D

Well, I'l be 45 in a few weeks...but those old cartoons were the best! Guess thats why they're called the "good ol days"....makes me wonder if in 20 years, they'll call these days, the good ol days....
Glad I grew up when I did...

yah ill post a pic. just have to save one to this computer, may take a while.. have a 3 yr old that tends to take my time.; :)

holy shit you even gave me a nickname! i didnt see that one coming ::)
So here's the deal.
you come on a bodybuilding forum, and in your post haven't said anything remotely positive about bodybuilding.
You use your personal "hate" for homosexuals to blow everything out of proportion in your statements...
look just because Kai Green does some fucked up routines (and Will Harris @ the olympia 3 years back),
doesn't mean every bodybuilder goes home at night to bang a grapefruit.
just because many people who go to bodybuilding shows, (and also compete) are gay...doesn't mean a damn thing.
you probably come across them all day long...yet when bodybuilding comes up, you're bitching about it being a gayfest or wtv
dumb quirky word you use to describe it...honestly what did you expect, great physiques and barely any clothes, its kind of a no-brainer that gay guys would
crash the party eventually especially for a "smart" guy like you... homos are everywhere...it sucks i know, but grow the fuck up seriously.
now onto drugs. you can go on day and night about that. fact is, time and time again bodybuilders (both amateur and pro) have shown
us that you can take all the drugs you want, it wont necessarily make you the best one there (given genetics, training, diet, work-ethic etc etc...)
If you want to blame the athlete, go ahead, but in the end it's the judges who make the calls. if they award freaks, then more freaks will follow in order to
gain a victory, if you change the mandate, and ask for a different look, things will follow accordingly.
but in the end, drugs or no drugs, a bodybuilder has to push him/herself to the limit to get on stage. Drugs dont always make it easier when you factor in training and eating accordingly in order to properly sustain your "fake muscle tissue"
its like comparing maintenance on a Honda Civic / vs / Lamborghini (takes a little more time/effort & money to do the upkeep on high-end machines)
I dont know where you see bodybuilding going in the next few years, and im sure you would love to have it your way...but your comments in your original
post dont even seem to show the slightest hint of respect or appreciation for bodybuilding, which poses the question, just what the fuck is your point being here?!
-

SPOT ON.
People who dont think bbing as a sport, they simply dont follow the "competition" part. I dont blame them. I just leave them to their ignorance.
But what can we do to make bbing better, as a sport..
-
Might be my memory playing tricks but wasn't that actually the case for many many many years???
Are you ridiculously young or have you dementia?
Yes, and i don't get it why that stopped.
For example, you have the biggest Fitness & Bodybuilding fair, the FIBO in Essen, Germany. Why not do this again?
I think you could have a lot of BB fans all over Europe coming to Essen.

Bob is Correct! Look at all the players wearing fucking pink to support breast cancer awareness. What a joke. An all male sport where players are prancing around in pink to cater to a fan base of women.... Because everyone knows that women are fucking dumb asses that feel good by spending men's money in anyway possible. Only a fool would pass on the opportunity to capitalize on a female fan base.
-

wow.. what a generalized statement about women.. way to go there, im sure ur a real winner.. i am not a football fan, aside from supporting it for my husbands sake.. nor am i proponent of finding the cure for cancer - any sort of it.. there have been cures and the fda and insurance companies wont ever pass on it.. THEY are the ones that gain from the "fundraising for research"... they will never want to find a cure.. i have seen the football players in pink tho and i, being a "fucking dumb ass woman" think it was silly and odd to have them do that.. but then again i am not at the helm of either organization and dont take credit for their ideas.. so, i think u are on track with your questioning of this latest nfl practice, but damn man, be a little smarter about how u word it.. not all women are greedy or "dumb asses", just like not all men are chauvinistic dicks.. get my drift? unless u are the latter - which hell, maybe u are - i would think this piece of intelligence would be commonplace.
-

Have to agree... except for the tinfoil hat conspiracy about cancer cures. Come on now. I'll agree that diet and lifestyle changes ought to get pushed more but no one has a magic pill locked in a vault somewhere.
-
no magic pill.. but there have been treatments and medications that have been shown to cure cancer.. they get brushed under the carpet pretty quickly by the criminals that run insurance companies. i saw this first hand as a paramedic.. i will never ever give money to research for cancer.. it makes me sick to think our government et al would rather keep this century's worst plague going rather than actually really find a cure. if u think about it too, we have people like bill gates and his billions (who does good work and philanthropy with his $$) and all this research and fundraising money - where the hell has it gotten us? we can split an atom and kill millions with the push of a button but we cant find a cure for cancer? there seems to be a kink in the armour here.. i just cant agree that a cure is hasnt been found when we have great minds and great amounts of $$ AND technology.. so i dunno.. i dont mean to be on a soapbox but (while it is humerous) im just not sure i want to see football in pink.. lol its gone too far..

Damn, you should PM Johnny Falcon, he's your lost twin brother.

How could you, he's your LOST twin brother, remember.
Shoot him a PM about cancer cure, you will get a LOT of info on the topic.

For the love of God tell us what these are!!

Tako, the number one thing I think would be what people eat...We really are what we eat..With all the processed foods, additives, chemicals etc in the American diet, I have no doubt in my mind it is contributing to other things besides obesity...A diet of raw veggies, fruits whole grains and a doctor supported supplementation plan would change America and many diseases, disorders and obesity numbers would plummet...We eat entirely too much and too much garbage.
-
absolutely wiggs! u bring up a good point! our (society's) diets and lifestyles certainly help in keeping cancer alive and well.. and then there is smoking.. wont even start on that disgusting turn off of a habit..
and, i cant tell u names of past (or present) drugs that have been found to help.. i dont follow it that closely anymore, dont have the kind of mind that retains that sort of info.. but i remember working with - what was it called back then? - bioscan, i believe.. infrared lights that heal on a cellular level.. used in the nfl, nba, nhl, etc for injuries.. i train horses and was introduced that way to it.. they are fabulous, used them not only on my horses but on myself for everything from skin avulsions to migraines. early studies showed that they were capable of putting cancer into remission. no, i cant give u links and xtra info, just that i recall seeing it/reading it.. now i believe they have been improved and are now called lumen lights. i think there is a website for them, perhaps u could google them? i will be at the kentucky muscle show this weekend so if your really interested and happen to be there, id love to chat more on them. :)
-
Well, if you ever get sick or injured, please just consult a doctor in addition to whatever alternative methods you're using. Take care, tako.
-
well having been a paramedic, i would always employ a doctor if needed. thankfully i dont get sick much and cancer doesnt run in my family so i am fortunate to not be included in that segment. my heart goes out to those that do. thanku for your sentiment! nice to see this thread turn somewhat nice.. ;)
and for the record, i hope mens bodybuilding remains a permanent fixture in the american way of life.. seeing arnold and franco in mags when i was a kid is what got me interested in muscles in the first place.. women do need some options but men need to keep their (quality) muscle on their lovely frames. HOT!!
-
Schmoes need pro bodybuilding! :D

wow.. what a generalized statement about women.. way to go there, im sure ur a real winner.. i am not a football fan, aside from supporting it for my husbands sake.. nor am i proponent of finding the cure for cancer - any sort of it.. there have been cures and the fda and insurance companies wont ever pass on it..
And as a paramedic you know absolute DICK about what goes on in a cancer research lab. Your knowledge base as a paramedic is at the bottom of the food chain in biology and science.

well u may be rite.. my knowledge now in that industry is not what it was 6 or 7 yrs ago. but i know what i have seen, been witness to, and i know some truly great minds whose writings are truth. im not sure who your reference is or what book he may be writing - i dont associate myself with criminals - but aside from that bit of nonsense, nothing i wrote here was put on the forum to create heat, other than to agree (in a now very indirect way) that it was asinine for football players to play in pink, for a mostly womens cause. but for people like u, that feel the need to spew laconic hatred towards others so u may feel better about yourself or your stance, u will twist anything anyone says, no matter how benign, into something that u feel u have to "defend".. if thats what u call your rants on nothingness... so stick to the point little one, if u can.

Without bodybuilding, I will not survive!

Everything in my first post was valid and on topic. The NFL is catering to the female interest and obviously has NO concern with alienating the males that make up the ruthless following of the contact sport and will always be fans. Women being strictly emotional with no legitimate logic behind any of their interests are very easy to sell to. All of which is an example of a change in the business model (my example of Pro Football), which was the original topic of this thread.
You were the one talking about the "hidden cure for cancer" to not only take the thread off topic, but also having such an opinion based on conspiracy "theories" and zero fact.
Post what you have seen and been witness too. Not concerned about anything you have read.

Everything you've just said, I heard over 15 years ago. Bodybuilding was supposed to be on the outs then. Yet, for some reason, it's still here.

You just KNOW its truth? lol...
I'm willing to bet you are also a christian and believe in the invisible man in the sky?
Am I right?

In what alternate universe are you living? I grew up hearing the same "Ewww!! That's GROSS!!!" comments about guys like Shawn Ray, Flex Wheeler, all those other guys as well.
It's always a generational thing, as I've said time and time again. The guys from the 60s think they were the best of all times and the guys from the 70s are just "horrible and aren't inspirational. It just appeals to a fringe group."
Guess what.
The guys from the 70s thought that about the guys from the 80s.

The guys from the 90s thought that about the gusy from the 2000s (or the 'aughts')
And, the guys from the 'aughts' think that about the guys from the '10s.
Ten years from now, we'll this talk about bodybuilders in 2020.

When I first got interested in bodybuilding, in the 80s, The Night of Champions was selling out the Beacon theatre, capacity of ~4k. Today's version of that show, The NY Pro, is held in a venue that holds about 1k.
So, either bodybuilding has declined in popularity, or, in the words of Spinal Tap Manager, Ian Faith, "It's appeal has gotten more selective."

The NY Pro has become more of a leftover show, because most of the top Olympia competitors sit that one out.
Look at the Arnold. But for the IFBB's rules, that show would eclipse the Olympia, in terms of popularity and prize money.

The practice of pros only entering one contest a year needs to stop. There should be a 3 contest minimum for every pro (except maybe Mr O) every year, and no more entering or withdrawing from a show at the last minute.

Most of them do that, already. It's just that it's usually the earlier shows that they enter. The headliners normally would hit the IronMan, the Arnold, and one other spring show.
After that, they hibernate until the Olympia. I recall an article in 2004 about Darrem Charles, referring to him as the "Pirate of the Carribean". Basically, he did mostly the late summer/early fall shows (when the other top pros were gone) and won those.

I would limit automatic qualifying at the Olympia to the winner, everyone else would have to compete again the next year to re-qualify. In addition, only the winners of the circuit shows should qualify for the Olympia. The bar should be set high like it was in the old days. I also agree on moving the Olympia around, it is getting stale in Las Vegas.

Define the "old days". The 80s and 90s required placing:
- Top 3 at circuit shows;
- Top 5 at then-NOC,
- Top 6 at that Arnold,
- Top 10 at the previous year's Olympia,
- 1st at any previous Olympia,
- Winning your class at the Universe.
Prior to that (early 70s), the only other show was the IFBB Universe. Only former Universe winners were the O.

I'd like to see the Olympia with less than 10 contestants, like the early '70s. It would make the circuit shows much more competitive and bring back some prestige to the Olympia. Nothing against guys like Erik Fankhouser, but he didn't deserve to be on the Olympia stage this year. Joe Weider created the show for former Mr. Universe champions, not a guy who finishes 5th at the NY Pro.

yes we need pro bodybuilding

I agree. They should limit the show to ten contestants.
With a smaller number of entrants, you could then introduce posing back into the competitive mix and use it to really differentiate between the top competitiors. Also, with the smaller number of competitors, the audience (and judges) wouldn't have to sit through scores and scores of basically irrelevant posing routines. With only ten competitors, each posing routine, each pose, would assume greater importance for the overall score and placing.

Even Mr Olympia says it's not a sport..........get over it kiddo! ;)

I like to see what bodybuilders can accomplish with the steroids and training, but I don't give a fuck about competitions.
If they stopped all bodybuilding competition I wouldn't give a shit. It's all a big charade anyway.

If you show a female a magazine picture of a guy onstage most likely you will get a thumbsdown, but let them see dude in a club or out at the mall....watch and see what happens.
As far as things going downhill, look at the trend in the television coverage for proof of this. Bodybuilding competitions used to be on ABC's Wide World of Sports, the Mr. Olympia was on ESPN (not live but it was still televised) I even remember watching the 1993 Nationals on TV...Arnold Classic came on NBC one year- 1993 maybe? Remember American Muscle Magazine on ESPN?
Now it's not on period, because you can't sell advertising because there isn't enough interest.

The Arnold came on TV in 1999. And even then, it was chopped up, severely edited (everyone posing to dubbed rock music, even though it was obvious that some, especially Vince Taylor, were using hip-hop/R&B songs), and aired LONG after it happened .
As for ESPN, the bodybuilding contests came on TV, months after they happened; the footage was chopped to the point you could barely hear the music; and the contests aired in the wee hours of the morning.
I think fans would rather see a contest online LIVE, or on YouTube 24-48 hours later than wait for months to see it a 3:00 am.

It also came on in 1993...I remember and it wasn't chopped up and screwed up. It was very professional.
OF COURSE the shows came on months after their aired...it was a different time period and they had to edit and so forth and get clearances. There was a time you didn't know who won a contest until 3 months after the fact. The point is at least it was televised.
I understand some are going to come in and homer...but face facts the contest aspect is a farce and embarrassment.

Agreed on limiting the O to 10 contestants to make it more exclusive also get rid of half the other shit at the O, it doesn't need to be a 4+ hour show
