Folks,
We've all heard it. We've heard the talks about the demise of professional bodybuilding due to heavy hormonal supplementation, distended guts, insulin abuse, disproportional body parts and so forth, being just around the corner.
For a number of years now, I've begun to look closely into the Men's Physique division. I believe it is a division that can best resonate with the common masses. I believe it instills a sense of realistic goals for an outsider looking into the idea of bodybuilding. Simply put, the Men's Physique division can be better marketed to the general population. It is more mainstream, sought out by the common man and admired by women.
I think the days of pharmaceutical-grade giants dominating the big stage are slowly dwindling down and will be replaced with the moderate presentation that is seen on the Men's Physique Olympia.
Bodybuilding needs to go back to its roots. It needs to become the flag bearer for healthy living and physically appealing bodies worth emulating.
Arnold was at the pinnacle of bodybuilding. His body and overall presentation was admired, loved and sought out after by even Hollywood. I think we need to go back to bodybuilding's roots. I think we need to bring back the Arnold physique.
What looks more like Arnold's physique? You be the judge:

The Key here is that things are getting a bit out of proportion and it's not looking as aesthetically pleasing as one would expect. Bigger is not necessarily better, better is better when it comes to bodybuilding.
Small waists, low body fat, high vascularity, well-defined musculature and balanced proportions is where it's at.

As an unhappy, but non-delusional member of Team No-Legs, I welcome this development.

Johnny,
Look at Arnold's thighs. They weren't that big when compared to what we now have on the Olympia stage.
Arnold could fit into a regular pair of Jeans and/or even a suit. He looked like a well-built man, as opposed to a science experiment.
If bodybuilding continues the way it's going, it will forever be composed of a small, cult-like following. Bodybuilding needs to be taken to the next generation, it needs to survive and, in order to survive, it needs to make money by being marketable to the common masses.
The biggest I can see an IFBB-pro looking, without appearing like some type of steroid-induced mistake is exemplified by Richard Jones.
This (pictured below) is attractive to the mainstream. This is what can probably serve as the tipping point, before both women and men start to say that it's all "too much".

I've been saying that Men's Physique and Paul Dillett's WBFF Muscle Model and Musclemania are the future of bodybuilding.
Save for Phil Heath's arms, there is nothing really great in today's bodybuilding. It has run it's peak.

but even with that aside I abhor mens physique
plus every dude in that division looks like their name is "Chad" or "tyler"......eww
how are you making a living at the moment, JNN?
I dunno....i live off what money I make in construction in the summer and just live off that for the rest of the year
I don't make that much but I live in a very low cost area and i don't have kids

Always has been, always will be.
Why shouldn't it - what's appealing about it? It's an extreme.

I myself don't see a big future for physique. There is no wow factor with them. With bodybuilding, there is. Just need to get rid of the distended guts.
-
The public's interest in bodybuilding peaked around 1977 and declined in the early 80's. Remember how many contests there were in the early 80's? One thing that is going strong is memberships in gyms even if the members are not hardcore. Anyone around the game in the 70's will vouch that gyms were not everywhere like they are today.
I think the problem is the drugs. It's a felony now and the average guy working in a gym isn't going to endanger his career, health and family going that route for subculture of a sport. I think for the most part guys want to look muscular, fit and lean. The crowd that wants steroid muscles are a very small group.
It seems law enforcement couldn't give a rat's ass that pro bodybuilders have their houses full of syringes, pills and vials. In a fantasy world I would like to see a mass coordinated DEA raid on the residences of the competitors weeks before the Olympia and find the Olympia cancelled. Then the promoters facing economic collapse would be forced to random drug test to Olympic standards for the next Olympia. Some would argue you can beat the test but not the crazy amounts that bodybuilders take. Like I said in the beginning of this paragraph it's just a fantasy.
I could live with physiques from the 50's in a contest but this generation that view steroid, GH, insulin, anti estrogen, HCG, LH, sight oil inject; EPO, speed, thyroid, and the rest as a normal part of bodybuilding wouldn't accept the physiques. Hell, you have guys that inject just to look good in the club on Friday.

Will Men's Physique be the ultimate future of professional bodybuilding? - NO
1º - They are full of drugs also.
2º - Even that division is watching an increase in muscle size. (were is it going to end)
3º - Bodybuilding it's not a beauty contest.
4º - Fans want freakyness
5º - Bodybuilding will never be mainstream.
6º - It's a division created to the frustrated who have no genetics to be mass monsters (myself included).

ZANE IS UNREAL THERE...I COULD LIVE WITH THAT LOOK,,THAT GROUP SHOT IS AWESOME AS WELL..
-
No sunken in faces, full heads of hair, skin that looks healthy and not paper thin. Man Ed Corney is so impressive in that shot. To me, that shot is perfection as far as size and proportions. There is no reason bodybuilding had to change. Physique will never hold a candle to this IMO.

The problem is that men aren't even supporting the modern day IFBB pros that we have now.
Most men don't stand in awe of what they see, instead they stand in repulsion to what is seen.
The shock factor is surely there, but is that all bodybuilding has become, a shock factor?
Very little men aspire to reach those extremes.
I think it's important to have a balanced physique. I think it's important to draw the line at some point as to not start to look too deformed. Once you cross that point, things change and you no longer present an aesthetically pleasing physique that would be revered by the masses.

I think women actually swooned over these guys too because they were healthy looking and handsome dudes. They looked big in clothes but they didn't look deformed.

I will say this.
I hang with the "jacked guys" at my gym, as I am massive...point is, at about 30 years old, the conversation changes from "I'm gonna compete..thinking light-heavyweight."
To "I'm thinking of doing men's physique." the younger set is all about it.

Absolutely agree, WBFF's Muscle Model in particular is the way to go, best combination... Can't stand those laughable twinks with shorts in Men's Physique though...

Masters Mens Physique over 50, Tall (6'0+) division. I figure I might be alone and therefore might get as high as a third place plastic trophy.

it takes what a year or two to build a mens physique body-not much of a challenge-they are a dime a dozen... every local show is full of hundreds of them..there is no wow factor and its fucken boring watching these little guys do there 1/4 turns in shorts..and there all doing gear and gh and diuretics same as bbers . ::) -arnold would dwarf every one of them and make them look like babies in his prime-mens physique will never take over bbing-to me that is a complete joke statement..the olympia sells out because of bbing and the freak factor and the mens physique is held at the expo where it belongs ..take out the mens bbing and see what happens .lol..without mens bbing the in the ifbb both in amateur and pro..the ifbb would fail-period

big difference between old school bodybuilding physiques and mens bikini. Mens bikini guys think they are bringing back the old school but those guys would laugh at them.

you have a point...Reg Park and Reeves were strong specimens. Park was a Rugged Bodybuilder. These muscles were built with solid heavy training. In the 50s he(Park) built it with raw basics.

Yes agreed Ro. But it could just merge somewhere in the middle of what Bodybuilding is today.
It could become a more appealing look again and not that bloat unhealthy freak look it is now.
I blame the use of Insulin as the downfall of Bb alone. When Insulin was introduced "the Golden era" went straight downhill.
It definitely would be nice to see Bodybuilding finding its way back to an aesthetically healthy looking physique again.
Ro you still have the classic physique of what a Bodybuilder should look like! You really do look awesome

That's well past the tipping point. I remember people saying guys like Shawn Ray were "too much". And he's smaller than Richard Jones.
And, as I've said previously, I've had female cashiers make the same "that's gross" comments about magazines I've bought with Arnold on the cover. So, having bodies that resemble the Oak's physique is hardly a cure-all.

Not to build a great one. The ones that people would look to. There are a lot of crappy bbers out there as well so argument doesn't make sense in that regard. Key word is local. I don't think anyone is talking about them but top of the line physiques (as zane, arnold, etc.were to aspire to).
I do agree with you on the "posing". Looks laughable.
I like more of a hybrid I think though guys like sadik are pretty ideal. A lot of muscleman guys look good and wbff.

There is a certain perspective being missed here. Also, the issue of financial gain/return.
So many guys in the gym that never would have dreamt of competing are now standing on the "bodybuilding" stage. Most of them don't yet think of themselves as "bodybuilders" per se, because the behemoths are still around and very much in their faces.
The physique that is being brought to the posing dias is now more of an "attainable" look, making a lot of guys and gals believe that they can achieve this look without drugs....
Well, most "bodybuilders" know better. Many of the "men's phsique" competitors are boatloading PED's, just not the same ones or in the same fashion or for the same results as the behemoths. Unfortunately this new 'men's physique" is no more 'attainable' than a hardcore bodybuilder's... but the public doesn't know this.... yet.
There is still the issue of genetics, hardcore dieting, cardio, committment, did I say genetics? Oh yeah, and coiffed hair, veneers, board shorts that these guys go through great lengths (no pun intended) to get 'just right'
The audience that watches these guys has much more financial prowess. They are advertisers, promoters, people looking for book cover models, etc, etc... bottom line: people that have no interest in a "Colmanesque' physique...
These pretty boys, pretty men, girlie girls, etc, etc are taking up a majority of the NPC and IFBB cards now. Don't take much to get one and doesn't mean much once you do, but someone is making some money off of handing them out like candy.
Having someone walk up to you and say "Excuse me, can I hand out the trophies?"
"I have a Pro Card"
those words are now actually laughable. EVERYONE has their Pro Card now. Why?
Money. Money. Money.
75 - 100 guys in one class alone... the money is being raked in like never before.
It's a good time to learn how to "spray-tan" at the "hotel across the street" and actually get good at it. You will soon be in high demand, also raking in the profits.
Most guys at the gym have no clue who Ed Corney is, or Jose Raymond, Flex Lewis, Lee Labrada... but!
If you start mentioning Mark Anthony or Jeremy Buendia.... lol
Dude and dudettes... let me tell you: This shit is NOT LEAVING anytime soon.
It's sad. It's laughable. It's hard for those of us who can name-drop all the way to 1962 when Larry Scott was the first official winner of what was to be the Mr. Olympia.
These physique competitors run around the gym with their entourage's saying "he's the next Mr. Olympia.."
they don't even bother to differentiate anymore.
Personally.. I don't really care. As a trainer, I have a lot more physique competitors blowing up my phone these days than bodybuilders, and yes, I ALWAYS differentiate between the two.

Folks,
We've all heard it.

Discuss...

I believe there is an audience and an interest in both physique and what some refer to as mass monsters or bodybuilding today. But throughout time, trends cycle. Look at what is popular today when it comes to women's figures as opposed to what was popular in the 60's. Kim's butt would have been an even bigger joke in the 60's than it is now. Marilyn Monroe's pointy boobs would look odd today.
-
As long as you have the same judges doing men's physique also doing bodybuilding, then it's just a matter of time before Men's physique becomes distorted and all fukced up.

MPD was never intended to replace bodybuilding or any other division.
The main idea was to get the husbands and bf's of bikini contestants to enter contests with them in a more "user friendly" division.

I don't believe Men's Physique is trying to replace bodybuilding, bodybuilding is just becoming boring, theres very few pros that are inspiring, they don't even spend any time on their posing routines, Labrada, Paris, Ray, Benfatto amongst others displayed their physiques beautifully, like art in motion, watching them was inspiring, theres no creativity these days, they just freestyle it on stage, dance a little and hit a few poses, it's boring. They implemented Mens Physique to add something new to the sport.

Mens physique is even more boring, they all look the same and there's 50 of them competing. Bikini is the same too. Judging them is a joke

Why can't we just go back to the standard of the 90's? Simple.

I fully agree it's all boring and cramming in all those different categories in one contest is just ridiculous! There is no way I could even sit through a contest.
