i've been trying out intermittent fasting again for the past two weeks, and i noticed pretty routinely i start feeling a lot better about 5-6 hours after i wake up. in the morning i feel "heavy", sluggish, sore, and have trouble focusing but after about 1 pm or so i relax, feeling "light", very focused, alert, and pain free.
i'm wondering if this is the "mental sharpness" so many IFers talk about, and what its cause could be. also, seems like 99% of ifers are coffee addicts, so i also guess maybe they slide straight from their caffeine high into this 'mode', never experiencing the shitty mornings; hence the rave reviews...
anyway, has anyone had a similar experience? if so, do you know why it happens? i noticed it doesn't seem to happen if i eat even a small amount in the morning, so i'm guessing it might be adrenaline / liver glycogen breakdown (to stabilize blood glucose). hoping to do some more research soon.

I have been doing it for years just by default. I never have liked eating breakfast, so usually I go to about 5-6 pm when I first eat. I usually eat all my calories by 8 pm to somewhere about 3 am or so. The mental clarity etc... is most likely placebo effect to be honest with you. In fact, all the nonsense claimed is pretty much placebo.
What I notice IF or not, it makes ZERO difference when you are just keeping track of calories per 24 hour period. It really does not matter if you IF or not.

probably true. still, it's very striking and consistent in my case, or at least has been for about two weeks now. It's piqued my curiosity, so I'll see if it persists...

Why are you fasting? Is it intentional or circumstantial?
To truly fast, I would think that you'd have to cut out all foods including coffee. The only thing you could have is water, so as to not to become dehydrated.
Personally, I have never been a proponent of doing such extreme things. There is a rebound affect which is counterproductive if you are trying to lose weight.

I've done IF for several years. There's a hormone release involved. It's nothing major but I also function better this way. I eat most calories between 1pm-7pm. Coffee in the morning. No calories though. Lots of waste and green tea. Occasionally Caraway seeds if I have digestive issues.

It actually matters a lot. Just by doing IF by leangains method (it's a semi-IF, too short for real autophagy to kick in but enough to increase insulin sensitivity/etc..) I've changed my body composition significantly, no more bloat and a lot less morning lethargy after eating breakfast (I postpone it to 2pm), all that by eating the same food, the same amount.

Good call. First thing I thought of.

Ceph,
I have a friend like you. He is OCD about food and it is spiraling out of control. He practically centers his life around food, and he gets upset/angry/pissy if he doesn't hit his macros, misses a meal, whatever.
His wife is seriously considering leaving him. She asks to go out to dinner, go for a drink, ANYTHING, but he usually refuses unless the meal is planned days in advance. This food obsession is starting to affect other areas of their relationship as well, most notably their sex life. She just wants a MAN, not a pussy.
I see a lot of you in him.
And you will both die alone.

This is intermittent fasting (IF)....not a full fast. Basically having a feeding window of 7-8 hours and not eating the other 16-17.
-
I love if
Whenever I do get a bit hungry in the am before breaking my fast the hunger always goes away
I find when I push my fast to 18-20 hours my energy gets even better and my thinking gets really clear
-
The "mental clarity" is probably from a temporary bump in blood sugar.
-
If your goal is to lose weight IF is definitely the way to go. You can keep your calories low, keep blood sugar low for an extended period of time (which is more conducive to fat burning) and it's painless. You don't feel like you are dieting at all. At least that how it was for me because I've never been hungry in the morning. And everyone I know also isn't hungry in the am. I always ate breakfast because of the "most important meal of the day" BS.
When I did it, it wasn't because I wanted to lose weight. I just got lazy and didn't want to bother with breakfast and just ate when I started to get hungry. That worked out to around a 16 hour fast a day and by then I could only get two meals in. Sometimes I could work in a snack which was usually a nutrition bar that was around 200 cals. But not because I got hungry. I was surprise how long I could go without getting hungry. I use to eat four times a day and cutting out those two meals was effortless.
Problem for me is that I lost too much weight. I went from already twinkish 185 lb to 173 llbs in about a month. I was pretty ripped but just too stringy and frail looking. So I'm back to having breakfast but now I just make a nice cold smoothie with apple juice, frozen strawberries, banana, some olive oil, about 35 grams of whey protein and some fiber powder (psyllium husk). It's pretty refreshing and goes down easy.

Long post on fasting!? Are you even self-evident!?

You should try it. Might be just the thing to get rid of that gut of yours.

This.
I remember when he posted his pics months back. He seriously looked like he was on deaths door. Looked lean to the point of unhealthy. Now he's trying another crazy diet. :-\
-
There is a hump I always need to get over. I feel the same sluggishness for a bit but it's more than just not enough sleep, but then I'll get hungry, crave caffeine but if I fight through it about an hour later I don't crave food and feel like I'm running full tilt for most of the day. it gets to the point where I can easily go back to bed without food but I end up eating something just because.
-

Thanks for catching this. It's fixed now.
I guess I was thinking of longer fasting. Skipping a meal seems find.
-
I'm actually opening up to this idea now. Not gonna do it as I lean out very easily but it seems to work for many and most people just won't get in 6 meals a day now. People are simply not willing to do it.
This fits their needs and can possibly work.
But not to build mass.
-
Since I realized the 5 meals a day thing is a fraud, I've comfortably gone to doing what I am made for. Not eating breakfast. Eating a small lunch and then eating a bigger dinner. Lower cals. Stomach less upset. Mind is clearer and less sluggish, ie the "high" or alertness whatever you call it.
Also feels great to just listen to your body and focus on other things than meals everyday.

Not so true. When jacked on gear, HGH and Insulin those 5 meals are essential, but no gear then yes I agree with you

Gene, scientists have actually done studies on mice and found that when they run the maze in a fasted state, they do a better job remembering how to get out.
-
But something that people forget is.... When you seek to aim size for bb'ing it's not about what doing what you feel like doing to get there. So saying "doing what my body is telling me" is really showing lack of motivation/dicipline.
Not that I should talk but at least I realize what's holding me back not deluding myself to fads as I see so many doing.
-

Strictly natural.
Trying to eat like a huge bodybuilder while natural and on a normal everyday lifting routine = fat and problems
The " fraud" here is referring to what the natural gymgoer reads on forums, bb.com and fitness articles etc

Yeah... except that it is not about beliefs. Martin has had presented lots of scientific basis for why that works. Calorie is NOT a calorie, it never was, if we talk bodybuilding/body composition.

Yes, of course. Nothing changed except my eating habbits tho', and the change was profound, not just in composition, but in how I feel dayly. At the very least - it's a way better method of eating than a traditional "bbing six meals per day".
-
Do you throw in your own experience there? Martin Berkhan (says he) does not juice but you do...
hey do u feel Greg Gallagher from kinobody is ripping off lean gains and Martin and making money off stealing his theories??

Gene, scientists have actually done studies on mice and found that when they run the maze in a faster state, they do a better job remembering how to get out.
i remember reading about that before
-
I like it eating 2 or maybe 3 times a day in a short period of time. You get to eat much more in one sitting and can actually feel full from this kind of eating. As opposed to eating 6 to 7 meals a day where you're eating like a bird and feel you always have to be eating something. Nothing better than to not have to think about food for large chunks of your waking hours...
-
hey do u feel Greg Gallagher from kinobody is ripping off lean gains and Martin and making money off stealing his theories??
Many people have simplified and monetized Martin's theories. It's the reason Martin retired, since they made tons of money and he was so focused on the evidence that he couldn't finish the book.
-
The real funny of it all is that it makes ZERO difference if you just keep track of overall calories in 24 hr period etc...

That's a shame. Dude has put in a tremendous work and fukkin copy cats stole it from him. Wasn't good enough at converting his popularity to money.

If you are only interested in your pure body weight - yes. If you are a bodybuilder - it goes far beyond that. If you are someone who wants better health on the long run - it's even more different.

Bullshit. Then how do you explain true Adonis getting lean and ripped by drinking exactly 1400 calories of fruit punch soda a day?

He retired? I remember checking out his site over a year ago when it was referenced in another article. It he site down now or just not maintained.
BTW, how did he make a lot of money? The site didn't seem to have a lot of followers and I don't think he was very well know with the mainstream.

Guy is a fucking nut job. How difficult is it to say eat less?
-
As long as you get your macros doesn't matter. Mine ends up being around 10-12 hours apart or 16 hour fast- 8 hour eating window. Just depends on the day and schedule.
-
Skipping breakfast? Fuck that, within the first hour from waking up I need something to eat or I may pass out.
-
Guy is a fucking nut job. How difficult is it to say eat less?
How difficult is it to, say, workout three times a week?
Obviously very difficult for most. Hunger pangs is very hard to ignore. It sounds off the survival alarm.
Not everybody eats like a bird. I am amazed at how much food an ordinary person can wolf down. My cousin inhales his plate lunch faster than I can barely finish my "mini plate". I attribute my leanest not to any great powers of discipline but to the fact that I am just not a big eater and actually like working out.
-
Guy is a fucking nut job. How difficult is it to say eat less?
BTW, why is he a nut job? He became very successful debunking an eating pattern taken as gospel by most.
-

Because his eating pattern is a myth and offers no benefit over just counting calories.
-
Because his eating pattern is a myth and offers no benefit over just counting calories.
Yes he does and here's why: losing weight, and this is what most people are concerned with and what I am talking about when referring to IF, is one of those things that are simple but not easy. Simple because all you have to do is be at a caloric deficit. It's not easy because you have to be at a caloric deficit. I competed in different weight classes during my Jiu-Jitsu competition days. So sometimes I had to gain weight and sometimes I had to lose weight. When dieting to lose weight I got hungry simply because I was eating less than I was use to. Now, I always ate breakfast even though I am never hungry in the morning because that's what you are suppose to do. I was always taught that breakfast was the most important meal of the day.
Now when I skip breakfast I really don't get hungry until well into the late afternoon/early evening. I go around 16 hours without eating and therefore find it easy to eat just two meals a day without those hunger pangs and cravings. And because I am now cutting the number of meals I usually have in half I can eat more in those two meals and still be at a caloric deficit. I think that by eating breakfast you reset your body back into eating mode and get hungry every 4 hours or so. I mean, you never get hungry while sleeping even if it's 8-9 hours because you are not in eating mode. With IF you extend that window.
IF just makes cutting calories so much easier. Like I said before, I just did it out of convenience but found that I was just losing too much weight and getting really skinny so I still force down that breakfast though I make a smoothie since it's fast and easier to force down in the morning instead of sitting down and eating.
-

Basically; cortisol and gh maintain blood sugar/insulin levels during your sleep. In a way, people deciding not to eat are mimicking some of this. That's probably why someone dieting all day has a window of clarity.
At this point: I only shoot for a reasonable diet and exercise plan. I feel better a little over 200 and can't see a good reason to be hungry all day or obsess over calories. The only thing I've actively cut down is sugar.
Would be interesting to see a few fad diets and long held opinions (i.e., "A calorie is a calorie") seriously studied.

It seems for you everything is very simple. I wonder what are your accomplishments in real life, aside lurking on gb for eons. ::)
Very easy to diss everyone and everywhere, a lot harder to create something of value.
-
Because his eating pattern is a myth and offers no benefit over just counting calories.
It goes far beyond that. Once again - if you only care about your body weight - that is true, if you are a bodybuilder or someone conscious about health - it is a pure bullshit.

I didn't say he made a lot of money, his competitors did by copying and bastardising his theories.
True, he wasn't mainstream, but he once had a waiting list for training people and it was months long.
He usually posts once a year ever since he withdrew and it is mostly about his powerlifting. Good guy, evidence based approach (he worked with Lyle McDonald and Alan Aragon at some point), no bullshitting. I think he messaged Van_Bilderass once because he wasn't sure some of his trainees were natural.

He's back a bit now. Basically he disappeared for a long time. I think he posted on his site fairly recently but does fairly often now on fb and instagram. Has a lot of vids of him getting into powerlifting more. I think he's around 230lbs now.

I am just lean and in excellent shape year round.
Btw, the thread was about IF and mental effects. So hows my stats relevant?
-
Skipping breakfast? Fuck that, within the first hour from waking up I need something to eat or I may pass out.
If you can get over that hump it's amazing how much better you feel. Breakfast just makes your body go into shutdown digestive mode. It sucks trying to battle through that pain of hunger but once you do the rest of the day is clear sailing.
-
Basically; cortisol and gh maintain blood sugar/insulin levels during your sleep. In a way, people deciding not to eat are mimicking some of this. That's probably why someone dieting all day has a window of clarity.
I don't think this is the case for me. I check my blood glucose and it's always between 80-95 during a fast, no matter how shitty or good I feel.

Makes sense.
One thing these IF devout morons do is binge. All they are doing is setting up the conditions for binge eating which will eventually lead to a distorted view of food.
These IFers are usually so fucked in the head its hilarious. They don't realize they would get the same exact results, body composition wise, just by keeping the same calories, eaten whenever they want in that 24 hr period. Makes ZERO difference.
But as you said, many will binge and possibly overeat as they set the conditions for it by their stupid little "regiment".

Are you consciously trolling or are you really so fukkin stupid?
NO, keeping an eye on JUST calories - won't get you the results you want if we talk body composition/bodybuilding, and even less if we talk health (and Marting goes into that quite deep. Educate yourself before spitting nonsense ffs). Try eating the same calories from "good food" and same calories from fast food for a prolonged time. And binge eating is only in your imagination in this case, just like with most stuff you write - you have a theoretical "understanding", yet its far away from a real life. Pretty fukkin hilarious when a "know all" (but don't do shit) fella is criticising people like Martin, who put in lots of hours into creating something valuable for everyone. What have you created aside bullshitting on this miserable board?

I guess everyone is different as far is how they prefer to eat.
For me, I prefer to eat to the point I am full of satisfied, not stuffed. I'm not a snacker at all so snacks and 6-7 small meals would be horrible for me. I prefer to have 2 small meals just to keep from going hypo and feeling light headed (such as protein shake or bowl of cottage cheese) then have 1 large fairly clean meal. Consisting of something like chicken and veggies, a salad and cup or 2 of cottage cheese.

Moron,
Just take the calories you are eating now, same foods, and eat them whenever you want in a day instead of IFing it. You will get the same EXACT results.
Hope this helps. (it won't because you would rather believe in magic)

Not a fan if IF. Think it's dumb.

I don't care either way because it makes zero difference when calories are accounted for.
I happen to do it by default as I just eat my calories whenever I get to them or after I make something etc... Sometimes thats 12-18 hours. It makes ZERO difference in how I look or energy levels or any of the nonsense IFers claim.

This I agree with. People always want to reinvent the wheel. The body is not fragile. 5 or 6 hours here or there doesn't make any difference whatsoever for the vast majority of us. In the case of a mister olympia competitor, then perhaps yes it does but that's it. People get so hung up on when to eat and what to eat and how to break it down. They over think the shit out of it. Just pick how much you want to eat and break it up how you feel like or what's convenient for you. 3 meals a day works for me and I don't center my life around food. I eat till I'm full, then wait till I'm hungry and eat again. This works out to 3 meals a day nearly 100% of the time. Another thing most don't realize is genetics play a huge roll in this. Very few guys eat normal and look lean. Most of us don't have the genetics and if we eat normally we look average but certainly not overly impressive and this is something you have to accept if you don't have great genetics!! OP, you certainly do have some characteristics of an eating disorder. My advice is forget this bro science dieting. Eat a good healthy 3-4 meals per day and try to stop focusing on how you look every day. Visit the gym 3-4 times per week, but don't center your life around it. Over time I think you'll find that you become much happier and you will feel great.

Dumbfuck, I'm doing exactly that, just changed my timing of eating and it had a PROFOUND effect on my daily life just merely by changing the way I feel (I've forgot what it is to be bloated or lethargic after meals. My last, biggest meal is a few hours before bed so helps to fall asleep).
Already have done it for years, genius.

yes - you looked like shit and still look like shit. No wonder, "genius".
Do you realize that even two different people can react VERY different to glycemic load for ex, and they can react very different when eating a certain food with another certain food, while reaction may be once again very different if only one of these foods are changed, and you, like a fukkin broken record repeat the "calorie is a calorie"bullshit. Calorie is MERELY a measurement of the HEAT that product is emitting while burning, and it ends here. Some calories will be digested more effectively from one food, than from other.
Yes - if you have a very steady eating pattern - you may approximately regulate that to a high precision, but it still doesn't make a fukkin sense if we talk BODYBUILDING (where certain foods are a lot more effective at changing body composition. For ex - these that have a high methionine content) or if we talk HEALTH (regulation of insulin sensitivity or inducing autophagy).
Your "calorie is a calorie" bullshit is only relevant if you want to have a CERTAIN weight on a scale and don't care about how you look or feel at all.
You better shut your fukin mouth on this one or I will make you a fool just like the last time you tried to "teach" me aging sciences.

here's the thing,
i DO look VERY lean when eating normal. i can eat 5+ lbs of food and not feel full (just did, actually). visit the gym 3-4 times per week? lol!!! without daily exercise, i would go batshit insane. nothing you say applies to me.
i can tell most of people on this forum have never dieted seriously, simply by the way they reacted to my ramblings. "just eat til you're full", "just eat normally", "what's so complicated?" ffs you people are clueless.
the mental state i experienced is not at all uncommon among those who diet to low bodyfat levels and stay there for a prolonged period of time (i was super lean for the better part of this year). what you dipshits don't realize is that you don't have to START OFF with an eating disorder, you ACQUIRE one if you stay at low bodyfat for too long. once you gain bodyfat again your mind slowly returns to normal. do a search, and you'll see stavios made a thread about binging after his contest, and the difficulty he had breaking the behavior. happens to lots of people, but few talk about it.
btw adonis, i began checking my BG because i suspected i might have diabetes. i don't, but i've learned a lot (and that a lot of what people believe is bullshit) over the past few months. probably won't check it much longer, both because my brain is functioning somewhat normally again and i'm not really learning anything new at this point.

Why do you think its impossible to be a low bodyfat without mental issues? Tons of people function normally and remain in single digits. If you are unable to do so, than clearly something is wrong with your approach and you have not found something that works for your body and your brain. Looks like you need to throw your "diet" in the dumpster and try again.
A normal person just doesn't do the things you have done in an effort to get lean- Purging, binge-eat-starve-binge-starve etc... monitoring glucose levels and so on. I mean for fucks sake you got to the point you were so weak, women could own you in the gym. At what point do you look at yourself and think, I'm fucking nuts and need to do something rational instead.
Find a rational approach for once that allows for single digits (if that is what you want) and a healthy mind (if that is what you want). Seems that you have not been able to do so yet.
Why continue hare-brained approach after hare-brained approach? Are you some kind of fucking sadist or something?
-
Why do you think its impossible to be a low bodyfat without mental issues? Tons of people function normally and remain in single digits.
It's not. I was under 10% for pretty much my entire life until I first 'bulked' with no issue at all. Some people can be even leaner without any problems. But everyone has a breaking point, and I reached mine. If this weren't the case, bodybuilders would stay stage ready all year round.

Normal people are fatass slobs who don't give a second thought to anything they do. But to address your main point: you don't start off deranged, you gradually BECOME deranged. After a sufficient period of starvation, you have BECOME irrational and cannot assess yourself 'normally' or choose a rational, corrective action. Actually, this phenomenon has been studied, but remains a relatively unpopular topic in bodybuilding, probably because first hand experience is 'hard to come by', so to speak.
Admittedly, it's very hard to understand without firsthand experience.
Why continue hare-brained approach after hare-brained approach? Are you some kind of fucking sadist or something?
Because I realized no one is going to 'show me the way'. I've finally grown up enough to realize the world is essentially comprised of two types of people, those who need "truth" and those who create it. The sheep and the wolves, the naive and the bullshitters, the 'betas' and the 'alphas', or whatever other names you want to give. If you aren't going to belong to the former group your whole life, you have to get into the world and get your hands dirty. Sometimes the only way you're going to learn is through the pain and suffering of firsthand experimentation.
But why do I need to learn? Because learning is the only way, I believe, to change my self-image, or identity. If I know, through firsthand experience, how harmful my 'ideals' are, I can finally let go of them. If not, I'm left tormented by question marks.
People were right to say I had a problematic body image. But I'm overcoming it, and I couldn't have done so without the experiences I had this past year or so. As hellish as it was, I don't regret it.

Anyone arguing that a bulimic's mind is stable once their body fat is back to normal shouldn't be giving advice, LOL!

Oh I know. I was just adding a bit to our agreement.
There is no real benefit to IF at all. One day the morons will realize that it was all a waste of time and they could achieve the same exact result by just taking the calories they currently consume and using them in any fashion rather than the binge-fast stupidity pointlessness. Just wait, it will be hilarious to watch in time.

I've eaten throughout the day, I've tried the 6 meals a day, I've tried normal 3 meals a day
But IF is the best I've ever felt
I get no hunger cravings
My energy is better
I've leaned up with no effort
My blood work improved
My mood is better
I love it

But carbohydrate restriction is really just one way of achieving an adrenal hormone buzz that provides unfathomably good results in the short-term while mysteriously disappearing later on. Another is rigorous exercise. Another is fasting or intermittent fasting. Then you have just plain calorie restriction – which usually feels awesome and invigorating before the crash landing. Stimulants will do the trick as well. Ephedra was an amazing supplement for many people from what I understand. A happily-ever-after? I don’t think so.
Each of these techniques or diets relies upon one thing – and that is a rise in catecholamines. Catecholamines collectively refer to the stimulatory adrenal hormones – mostly epinephrine and norepinephrine. These hormones, when released, cause a rise in body temperature, a rise in mitochondrial activity, an increase in mental acuity, cognition, and alertness (or at least the feeling of being sharper even if you really aren’t), a huge rise in physical energy, the release of fat tissue from fat cells, a drop in appetite, and weight loss while feeling not only good – but far better than normal.

Adrenaline release was my original hypothesis. This guy seems to think so as well. This passage really correlates with my experiences.

I think the key is finding what works best for you as an individual. For me I prefer IF and eating 1 or 2 meals a day. Others may prefer 3 or 6. Nothing wrong with either one.
-
TA says meal timing has no factor but I think not eating can prime your bodies hormones, has insulin work in your factor, stuff like that. I can't explain it or prove it, but think there's an advantage to it.
Just placing carbs before, during, after training to get lean, rest of the day protein and fats works very well. There's timing involved here and without it, it wouldn't work as it does.
Odd how some just don't understand that.

IF increases growth hormone.
yeah, that one shines when you don't eat. Probably a good reason why this system seems to keep guys much leaner.

How does intermittent fasting make you "sharper?" When I am hungry, all I could think about is eating.

What evidence is there that there is some normal pattern of eating that would allow cephissus to have single digit body fat instead of a diet that causes him to suffer and go crazy a bit and obsess on food?
It may just not be in the cards for him. Frankly I don't think it is in the cards for all but a small percentage of genetically gifted. The rest who eat anywhere near normal without hunger and suffering or some drugs will look okay at best.
The problem is with expectations, which are too hig.

I was doing IF for a while and lost some quality fat poundage. Got the fucking flu, didn't eat much for a while then felt better and ravenous eating everything in site. All that eating for a week and I'm sleepy all the time, needing naps, feeling bloated. While doing IF I had energy through the roof. Now I fall asleep if I sit down for a minute. Need to get my ass back into again.

I feel lucky because I don't get this type of virus. On the other hand, if I catch a cold, it invariably turns into bronchitis and requires antibiotics to cure it. Either way, being sick messes with one's routine.

No, first take a swipe with the TP for the preliminary cleaning. Then the baby wipes. Been doing this for decades. I can't believe that people just use TP. I so want to say something because I genuinely believe that they probably just never thought about and just do what they've been taught and bought up with. The few times I felt comfortable to bring it up I always get a new convert.
I'm also always armed with a mini pack of baby wipes at all times when I'm out and about. Not just for the bathroom but it comes in handy for a variety of situations. If you eat in your car a lot it's a must to keep your hands clean.

these articles don't quantify anything. intermittent fasting improves insulin sensitivity? how much? is this effect significant?
fasting can help with binge eating disorders? sorry, but this sounds like a bad joke to me. the link doesn't go to a study. wonder if the author has ANY personal experience with the matter, or is just writing from his imagination. the 'reasoning' given is absurd:
"Also, for anyone who wants to prevent binge eating, you can establish a set time in where you allow yourself to eat your daily amount of calories in one sitting, and then not eat till the following day."
I could just as easily write:
"With intermittent fasting, binge eaters find encouragement for their proclivities. Being told that eating all of your calories at once is not only acceptable but beneficial only reinforces the pattern they're hoping to break. The disorder deepens as they continue to 'purge' through fasting."
Who's right?
These articles exist to fill someone's pockets, at the expense of filling others' minds with garbage.

Are you aware that baby wipes are not flushable? The will fuck up your plumbing. Try moist wipes. They are flushable and just as effective. They also come in travel packs for when you just can't wait to get home to shit. They're available by the case at Costco.
