I had forgotten about him, I stumbled across a pic that reminded me.

I've been known to google image 'unusual foreheads' from time to time. I'm not judging. But Getbig doesn't tolerate any hucksterism.

Must have been a really thick pic, or maybe he slipped on the pic and just worded it wrong?

That bodybuilder is not forgotten because nobody knew him in the first place, if your claim to fame is winning the 90kg brits back in the 90s how do you expect to be famous.

I'm trying to remember that big bodybuilder with the red hair. His name escapes me.
Ken Waller? He's isn't that well known now given the level of status he once had. Mike Katz is sort of in the same boat.
-
SCOTT DEEMERS.... But as 8 inch so stated, he can't be remembered if I never hear of him some time earlier.
I'm one of those individuals who thinks he knows everything inside and outside of the bodybuilding world ... so I was surprised when someone on this board mentioned DEEMERS a couple of weeks back.
I had never heard that name before so I went to YouTube and saw some backstage video footage that was shot around 1995 (USA Championships coverage?) and was very impressed.
But then I forgot how impressive he was until this subject came up, so I guess it's now appropriate after a two week 'forget'.... to mention Scott Deemers.
I would post that video here but I ain't smart enough to do it.

Not sure if he ever got busted, but that Ron Coleman was Twinlab/Muscular Development's "All Natural" guy. Mike Ashley was the other "All Natural" guy from around the same time.
-
Billy "Thunder" Smith and Gerald Dente are probably better known now for their other pursuits. Although Billy measuring Flex at 0.0% body fat is a fine piece of bodybuilding lore.
Roger "Crazy Legs" Stewart, Melvin Anthony, and Yohnnie Shambourger all had pretty big press just a decade or two ago, and are now seldom mentioned.
-
Teh sarcasm is strong in this thread.
I'll add Matt Duvall.
-
OLDTIMeR, I think you may be trying to recall RALPH KROGER~
Ralph used to live in the east county of San Diego in a small town called Lakeside. I believe he had a small gym there too. Big fish in a small pond. I think he later moved north to the so-called Mecca of Gold's but ultimately disappeared from sight. I hope he just realized that it wasn't worth whatever it was going to cost him.
Nice man. I used to see him in a mall called Parkway Plaza in El Cajon. Always polite and friendly. I hope he's doing well.
-
Anyone recall Joe Nazario?
How bout Dale Adrian?
Yup. Dale was purported to be the second coming of Larry Scott. Not. AAU Mr. America 1975 (&) if memory serves me. Dale won the medium height class and the overall and Clint Beyerle was the tall class winner and I think he also took most muscular. He is now married to Mike Mentzer's former girlfriend, Cathy Gelfo. Pat Neve was the short class winner.
Note the use of the word "class" to describe categories/divisions in those days. Bodybuilding used to have class.
-
SCOTT, Good to see that someone remembers Ralph Kroger.
I don’t know what years you are referring to but sometime around the early to mid 1960 Ralph had a very small gym on the ocean side of Pacific Coast Highway midway between Oceanside and San Diego in the vicinity of the
Horse Race Track.
There was not much construction in that vicinity back then and Ralph’s place was just a few years away from the beach and maybe 50 yards away for the ocean.
I stopped in on my way to MCRD once but the place was empty with Ralph no where in sight.
A few years later (maybe many, few, years later) Ralph opened a smaller gym in Hilo, Hawaii which did not appear to be too successful and had lots of competition as a result of Herb Ishibayshi’s Hilo gyn a short distance away.
During all those years I don’t really ever recall meeting Ralph even once.
Last I heard he packed up and moved back to Southern Cal. That was also many years ago.
Might have even become a pastor or a preacher …. but I could be dead wrong on that.
-
SCOTT, Great to see that you can recall Dale Adrian also.
I promoted a show once upon a time and invited Dale to be our special guest poser.
That afternoon we promoted a Powerlifting contest on the beach and Dale decided to stay on the beach all day and help us out.
The big problem was that Dale arrived in decent shape but white as a bleached sheet.
Four to five hours in the sun and he left to go to his room and get ready for the night show.
He came to that evening's bodybuildnig contest and performed as special guest poser (a major part of any bodybuilding contest way back then) as bright as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Raindeer .... Rudolph's red nose part... and put up with a lot of pain going through his routine.
But he did a great job nonetheless and got a long standing ovation.
Bodybuilding audiences were really great back then.
And so was Dale.
QUESTION .... Do you recall a San Diego bodybuilder in the mid 1960's who nearly cut his leg off while cutting trees with an electric chain-saw?

I don't recall that bodybuilder but I will guess that he trained at either Stern's or Fisher's gym or perhaps Valley Barbell Club. I trained at Stern's and VBC but missed out on Fisher's. My younger brother told me he was dating one of Gene Fisher's daughters back in the late 70s/early 80s.
Oops. Almost forgot about Maynard's Gym in Birdrock, La Jolla. Orange was his fave color.
If the near-amputee's name comes to me, I'll post it up.

SCOTT, I was at Pearl's in Pasadena when Clint Beyerle and his training partner were prepp'n for one of the National contests that was being promoted by Gold's at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium when Gold's was owned by Ken Sprague and I do recall that Clint went into Bill's office and apologized because he and his partner were going to train at Gold's for the contest simply because it could possibly benefit them in the contest.
That showed me that Clint was a damn good person to explain to Bill before joining Gold's.
Back then Clint was probably the most ripped-up/vascular competitor in Southern California, but I forget how he did in that contest and who won the overall. (It might have been Gary Leonard.)
DO you recall who Clint's training partner was back then?
And I believe that Clint got his pilot's license around that same time period.
Any idea what he's been up to lately?

Thought I could add a few bits of info about Ralph Kroger and others in the San Diego area.
Mr. Kroger bought a gym in El Cajon after the his gym in Del Mar. The original gym was set up and equipped by Maylen Wiltste, who was an assistant strength coach for the San Diego Chargers under Alvin Roy. Maylen the Magician, as he liked to be called also owned a gym in the PB/ La Jolla area. Ralph went to Hawaii to work as a carpenter as I recall from talking to a few of his former members. His gym was later owned by Glenn Vogel, a Jr. Mr A (class winner I believe) and then by a Wayne Collins(sp). Most of the guys went to Bill Golumbick's Valley Barbell Club when it moved from Spring Valley to North El Cajon in the old Army barracks. Mr. Golumbick is an interesting part of gym history in SD county all by itself. Mr. Kroger's last gym is/was in Cherokee Ind., call the Victory Gym. Don't know if it's still in business or not.
Gene Fisher bought George Redpath's last gym in Spring Valley in 1968 or so. I knew Mr. Fisher very well and bought his equipment for the gym I owned. Gene and Bill were all "Stern's boys" as I called them. Mr. Stern is the Father of weight training in San Diego having opened his gym in 1946 after the war. Had some fine conversations with Leo and he was alway willing to answer my training and history questions, as long as I followed him around from his equipment store to his gym or to his wife's Fitness Salon.
Some other notables from the San Diego gym history include-
Bud Keith who had his Health House gym on the boardwalk near Belmont Park in Mission Beach.
Earl Clark the Mr. A winner, who had a gym in the South Bay area for years.
Bob Clark who was a gym owner but mostly known for his Iron Co. gym equipment {later become Polaris}
Roger Mentz(sp) who had the Iron Man gym in Oceanside.
Bob Janis who had the Oceanside Heath Club and was the AAU physique chairman for the SD district.
Paul Edney who owned the first Gold's Gym franchise in SD.
I hope someone finds this info helpful, sure was interesting to be a small part of at the time.
Be safe and strong,
Big Pat

BIG PAT, I did find your latest post to be of interest as you mentioned individuals within the game whom I knew well many years ago but have lost contact with.
And thanks for the update on Ralph Kroger whom I've never actually met but our 'paths' crossed frequently and he did play a decent part of the bodybuilding game within he San Diego vicinity.
I can recall Ralph's beachside Del Mar gym as a small stand-alone building about 20 feet off the sea-side of the Pacific Coast Highway and I'm sure that the freeway improvements over the years have removed any evidence of that structure today.
I was unaware of his move to El Cajon but it must have been soon after that move that he made the big move to Hilo, Hawaii and set up a small gym on the 2nd floor of a commercial building on the main street there.
All of the above is based on long term memory so some small parts of it may not be too precise and I do not recall ever meeting with the other associates you mentioned.
But I did know Bob Janus well when he had that small gym in Oceanside on the east side of 101. Actually I believe it was built as a Hand-Ball business but Bob apparently installed some minor weight equipment and sold handball as well as gym memberships.
And Roger's last name is spelt "METZ". And he was a friend of Bob's whom I also knew for a very short while.
Paul Edney's Gold's Gym, under another name and another owner, was located on one of Oceanside's side streets pretty close to the beach. I don't recall the year that Paul took over and made it a Gold's but I was long gone from Pendleton around that time.
Paul eventually sold it or closed it up and moved to Hawaii until he recently returned to California.
Strange thing here but one late afternoon while I was driving through Pendleton along the PCH, I saw a truck in front of me advertising Pearl's Gym and as I passed that truck I noticed that Bill, himself, was driving it.
I honked and gave him a military salute and he laughed and saluted back.
Roughly 15 years later I met him formally and even if many years have passed ... Bill always comes up, remembers my name and offers a hearty handshake.
One of the great gentlemen in this game!
Pat,I asked before but .... Do you recall a San Diego BB competitor from the mid 1960's who sliced up his leg pretty badly (and accidentally) with a chainsaw?
Thanks again, Pat ........ Stunt
PS. I never did meet Mr Stern but I was inside his 2nd floor San Diego once upon a time during a stint at there MCRD. Wasn't it situated above a bar where the military hung on?

Thanks, BeThere. Glad you read it. More to come which may not be of interest if you did not have the opportunity to witness the growth nor participate within what this site is supposed to be all about.
Hey Pat! You did mention another individual whom I may have met and have since forgotten......
"Bud Keith who had his Health House gym on the boardwalk near Belmont Park in Mission Beach."
A small group of us Marines used to travel to the beach cities between LA and San Diago and compete in any physical fitness activities which those beach-cities sponsored.
Bodybuilding back then was only a minor attraction, but we did excel in anything that required functional muscle within and outside of the Pacific.
And yes, we did manage to take most of the trophies back to Pendleton.
I think it was Bud Keith that held such an event each summer in Mission Beach. I sort of recall that he had an old beach-front house filled with various lifting gear and that house was just a bit north of a roller coaster
and there was a famous beach bar around the corner where all the winners and all the losers would gather to down their thirst with as much beer as was humanly possible to consume.
Was that possibly a Bud Keith event? I never did thank him for all those trophies we took back to the base.
And last question.... Do you recall the names of the individuals who opened the Gold's Gym a bit further north up by the La Jolla area?
-

I don't mean to do Pat's work here, but I think I can help by reproducing part of one of his previous posts if I may:
"I believe the man you are referring to with the leg injuries is Big John McWilliams. I had an older gym member of mine who trained with him at the North Park Health Club in the 60's. He was the club manager and from what I was told trained a lot of the SD Charger football players, including John Kemp. I have heard two, now three stories on how he injured his legs. One is war injuries, two is yours about the chainsaw and three, which Dr. A on IronAge forum states, from an industrial accident. Years ago Mr. George Coates (former IM writer) lent me all the photos that Mr. Stern took of him, he is always wearing long pants. There is one famous image of him that appeared in IM magazine in the late 50's that shows his right arm flexed which looks like a bowling ball . He has been given credit for having the first true 20" arm. "

Greetings Stunt,
Thank you to Taffin for your fine archival skills.
As Taffin quoted from my previous text, John McWilliams was the only one I knew of that had some kind of serious leg injury that he felt he needed to keep his legs covered for. The only person that might know the true story is George Coates-if he is even still around. There was also some discussion on the old IronAge forum about Mr. McWilliams but that was destroyed by a virus of some kind years ago.
Bud Keith was an interesting man and gym owner. His Health House gym was right on the boardwalk in the heart of Mission Beach as you said. I don't know what year he started the Mr. Muscle Beach contests but after he closed his gym (late 70's?), the Hamel brothers turned it into a gift /bike rental shop and continued the contest on a balcony/platform that faced the ocean. The only one I attended was in 1982 because of few of my gym members wanted to me go down. Mr. Keith was a nutritionist also and supplied many gyms in the area with supplements including Mr. Golumbick's Valley Barbell Club. I think the Beverly Co. took most of his business when they offered a multi pack with each gyms logo. Bud Keith's son still sells his dad's nutrition bars online.
The only other Gold's franchise owners {other than Paul Edney} I knew of were the Fisher brothers (not related to Gene) that owned one in Fletcher Hills area of El Cajon. Spent most of my training time at my home gym the commercial one I had and Mr. Fisher's.
Never met Mr. Pearl but as you know he stayed close to Leo for all those years after he trained at his gym. If he is anything like Leo, he would always remember you and what you had discussed with him. I met Mr. Stern in 1978 as a "Young Lad" as they say and he always took the time to answer my questions and talk about training - as long as I followed him from his equipment store, shop, gym and his wife's figure salon. His second gym was above a chicken/meat rendering business in the early days. Now it's a Chinese cleaner store. North Park had it share of bars back in the day. Now it's a trendy hipster area, if that's the correct term for it.
As I stated before, I wish I had taken the time to sit down with some of the pioneers of San Diego gyms, I am sure it would have been enlightening to say the least. You must always remember and thank those who paved the weight training way.
Alway look forward and appreciate your posts.
Be safe and strong,
Pat

PAT / TAFFIN ... Thanks but the Texas Chainsaw guy was definitely not Big John. But once I manage to recall his name, you're gonna most likely recall him and his accomplishments.
Pat, I find it interesting that the two of us can recall that beach front house during its earlier days. I do recall that the small rooms were simply full of weights and weight related equipment with no furniture whatsoever.
Was that house ever used as a residence?

The Fisher brothers? Was one of them DAVE?
Does the name Rick Stephenson (forgotten bodybuilder ...Pacific Beach) sound familiar?

Hello Stunt,
At one time all of the homes along the boardwalk from Pacific beach to South Mission beach were small cottages. Belmont park was built in 1925, so I am sure that attracted the tourist business' and shops around the park. About 10 years ago I used to go down once a week and walk from Chrystal Pier to the South MB jetty. I think there were 5 or 6 original homes left and one triple lot. All the rest had been converted or rebuilt in 3 story condos. The beach side is far more expensive than the bay side, my best guess is that on condo facing the beach is worth at least $1.5M. And someone once said, buy any and all beach front property you can get your hands on, they stopped making it a long time ago!
The Fisher brothers that owned a Gold's here in the east county were Paul and Steve.
I have heard the name Rick Stephenson, must have been connected to the Paul Edney's Gold's in PB.?
Here's a few SD names for you.
Ron Hutchinson, trained at Mr. Fisher's for awhile.
Ray Routledge, at "Stern's boy".
Eddie Silvestre, TJ gym owner/ hosted the Mr. U one year and Stern' boy.
Rob Reis, I believe he spent time @ Leo's.
Bob Schry, infamous for his past deeds in SD.
Ty Young, won Mr. Yorton's Natural contests (am/pro)
Jesse Lujan, A NPC guy, trained at Grossmont College when I was there (non students got kicked out of the campus gym and went to Valley Barbell Club.)
Be safe and strong,
Pat

Phil Hill
This guy was awesome. Densely built. A little narrow but more than a heath wide. Came on strong in 87 or 88 then was washed up by 1990.

:)
-
PAT, I do recall the names ..... Ron Hutchinson, Ray Routledge, Eddie Silvestre, Rob Reis, Ty Young, and Jesse Lujan (Isn't he a doctor now?) ... but I honestly don't recall meeting them in person.
Did Eddie S. ever promote an IFBB contest in TJ? Some good stories in that one.
Here's a test for avid GetBiggers .... Name the 'forgotten' bodybuilder in this photo and his significance within the NPC.

Just shot that issue out. Back in 1977 through 1980 they were sending me triple issues. I would get three Muscle Builders in the mail each month. Wrote them...nothing. Still got them.

I didnt know Steve had a problem with Booze - Meet him a few times back in the day
seemed a decent bloke.
As for Grant - Thought he would go on and do really well - Loads of tissue on alight frame
Looked like he had hollow bones to carry so much muscle at such relatively light weight.
From what i was told by He only ever went to gym & trained if he had loads of gear in him,
Apparently he didn't have much £ income & wouldn't go to gym.

Sorry for a weird question, but did Grant have a Welsh accent? As he looks really familiar to me so I was wondering if I'd met him?

NEITHER, Good call on Dale Ruplinger. To the best of my limited knowledge,Dale has never been mentioned on this board before. How did you ID him?
BETHERE, I don’t know Ruplinger’s contest history so I’ll have to look it up to see if he was the first and only middleweight to win the overall at the USA.
Joe might know.
LOCAL, What years was Grant Thomas competing? 1998 through ???? I don’t really ever recall hearing about him until now. Did he ever compete within the IFBB?. I was not too familiar with he other organizations at that time although we did work with a good number of European powerlifters in the 90’s.
PAT …. I believe that I was at that TJ contest the year it was promoted. I am having a problem pulling up the link you provided but I think that was the same year that good friends of mine entered and which Bob Birdsong won. Some interesting shit occurred that day. More about that after I read your link.

I once mentioned him in a "worst ever physique on an Olympia stage"
-
BETHERE, I don't recall seeing that post and I had forgotten that Dale had ever entered the Olympia nor what he looked like at that time.
But here's a photo of Dale when he won the first national contest sanctioned by the NPC ... I think it was the 1982 Mr. USA Contest.
So Dale goes down in history as the 1st NPC National Title holder. (If I'm not mistaken!)
Apparently he has not been forgotten.
-
I remember Dale being named "the man with the hollow bones" because despite being around 5 feet 8 he weighed only 176 lbs or so when he appeared to look closer to 200 lbs.

yes he was from wales - Not sure what area.

TAFFIN, "Greek-Australian 'roid trade" ... what was that all about?
STUNT: If I remember correctly, he was saying that a certain part of Australia (can't remember where, maybe Melbourne?) had a very big Greek community (which he was part of) and back then pharmaceutical bulk suppliers in Greece asked few questions. So family connections were all the rage. I can't exactly remember the route in, but the fact that Australia clearly has a massive shoreline is probably a giveaway.
There must be someone on the board who can remember this better than me?

Also the big bodybuilder Ken C ?, that used to do shows in Kiss Demon make up in the 80's.

Frank did a fantastic seminar after he stopped competing, the first time anyone had spoken openly about gear and what they did, a lot of great anecdotes about his time in America with Arnold.

Peter McGough marketed his story hard and well. He seemed like a hero to me reading about his as a teenager.
From Peter
As I entered the hall I asked someone if the intermediates had been on and was told they were just about ready to start the posing round for that class. I spotted Frank Richards on the far side of the hall who had recently finished fifth at New York’s Night of Champions in his first contest for 14 years. Aptly nicknamed The Lionheart following a near fatal industrial accident in 1971, wherein even when he was out of imminent danger it seemed he would have to have a foot amputated. I went to congratulate him on his Olympia qualifying performance and we moved to the side of the hall: he facing the stage and me with my back to it. I asked him, on the basis of such a great result, how long would he go on competing? A couple of years was his reply. I was surprised and asked why so? As I finished the question I heard the opening techno riff of The Eurythmics Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) throbbing from the sound system. Frank looked over my shoulder and nodding at the competitor just appearing, said, “Because of fuckers like that coming through.” I turned and to the background of the purring tones of Annie Lennox had my first sight of Dorian Yates. I’ll never forget that moment.

Grant is from the valleys in wales and has a strong welsh accent. I have known him years and he is a good guy. After winning the british he competed in the Night of the champions ( he told me he struck up a friendship with Markus Ruhl who was competed for the first time in America also) where he didnt place but had some good write ups about his showing. He was expected to go on to better things but it didnt really happen for him due to one thing or another. He was pretty short but had a great physique and carried lots of muscle. Last time i saw him was in cardiff and he had lost lots of size and didnt really look like a bodybuilder anymore....shame as he lots of potential.

on the Terry Mitsos thing, he was definitely talking about Melbourne. Outside of the capital city of Greece (Athens, duh) and 'maybe' one other city, the largest Greek population in the world is in Melbourne (srs). As to how much 'trade' was going on, I have nfi, other than to say that back in his heyday, there was no shortage of Aus made/sold vet gear available, so I'm not sure how much demand there would have been for stuff from overseas for most people.

Maybe I mis-remembered then, but I thought the thing was about pharmacies in Greece not giving a sh1t about prescriptions which made it easy to ship things from there to your 'family' in Melbourne...
But you mentioning vet gear reminds me of that whole 'Drive' cattle thing in the early '90s - wasn't it something like Equipoise combined with Methandriol Dipropionate to 'keep the receptors open' (oh brother smh) >:(

Big Pat, I knew Jesse when he trained at Olympus gym in Montebello along with Eddie Holmes and Ellis "Spanky" Evans (who I just recently re-connected with). At that time Jesse claimed to a heart surgeon and then come to find out is wasn't true. Yes, Jesse was a Senator and now resides on Guam, where my wife of 9 years is from where her family is involved in politics. Let's just says he's a pretty corrupt politician. He knows me and I know him. Planning a trip (the first one) to Guam to visit family and hopefully meet up wit him.
However I will say this, he was a damn good lightweight bodybuilder.

Had you been up close to her..??
Not a pretty sight in my book....
Thick thick make up couldn't hide the five o'clock shadow / stuble
Adam's apple & Deep voice --- I just couldn't hit anything like that.
Ian's still going strong - not spoken to him in awhile though.

Greeting Coach,
"Big Pat, I knew Jesse when he trained at Olympus gym in Montebello along with Eddie Holmes and Ellis "Spanky" Evans (who I just recently re-connected with).
However I will say this, he was a damn good lightweight bodybuilder."
When I met Jesse he was training at the Grossmont Jr. College weight room, must have been around 1981 or so. He said he was connected to the UCSD Medical school and would sometimes wear scrub tops when he came in the gym. Always trained with a swimmer named Gary, if my memory serves me well. He weighed about 190 lbs or so and trained with some good sized weights for his size. I remember him talking about steroids once and he made mention that when your on them the "pump never goes away". Never knew he was interested in physique competition until I saw him in Muscle Digest (?) a few years later. After Grossmont College "kicked" all the non students out of the weight room, most went down to Bill Golumbick's Valley Barbell Club in El Cajon. Over the years I have talked to a few people who knew him and they all spoke of the "tall tales" he told.
Be safe and strong,
Big Pat

Anyone remember the article in a '90s edition of Flex by
Kahn N Singh Julian Schmidt where the writer tried to pretend that after a workout this guy drank beer rather than protein shakes due to his (supposedly) Viking background? LOL! ;D
"And after you've finished drinking beer, what happens...?
We drink.
What do you drink?
More BEER!"

Gary Shelmerdine, really humble nice guy, that pictures morphed by the way.
Used to see Gary about a lot, His brother James has great build as well, made a comeback a few years ago

Sorry if Jon has been mentioned previously (too damn busy to look it up) but here's a photo of BOSTIN's dad (JON LOYD) taken in the 1970's.
I asked Bostin about his dad and he did confirm that he hurt his back back then and had to give up serious competition but I failed to ask him how his dad did while competing.
Anyone know?
Any constructive/destructive criticism would be interesting. A great physique for the early 70's.
-
whoa! that taper and width! never seen him before.
He had an illness or something of the sort and had to quit.
-
Eddie Moyzan
He had a hot bodybuilder's body defying the norm that too big becomes unappealing...

Knew Bob well when he was at Dan Mackey's gym (The Gym) in Ventura and then later at Oxnard Fitness Center in the early 80s. Very strong guy.

No, Stoney was from Texas, I want to say Galveston. I'm pretty sure there's no connection.
