My attempt at the Deadlift Challenge

Ok....Saturday I was in working legs and I got to thinking about this whole 225lb deadlift challenge.  After getting done with just quads, I decided to give it a shot.  I have to say that the first 20 were easy.  After about 32 I stopped (with bar at waist) and wrapped my thumbs around to a thumbless grip.  After 45 my shoulders were BURNING.  I paused again at 50.  BIG MISTAKE as my hamstrings started to cramp up.  I only managed four more reps and had to stop because the cramping in the hamstrings and rear delts was too much.  This is the protocol I used:

1) No belt
2) Used straps
3) Conventional foot placement (cant sumo much anymore after hamstring tear)
4) Grip was both hands overhand.
5) Weights touched the floor on every rep
6) I stood straight up with every rep

I have to say that I would REALLY like to see this done.  I thought I could get more, but holding the bar while standing up was BRUTAL.  I might add that I went on to train hamstrings after that and am paying DEARLY today.  I might do this on a weekly basis because I havent felt my hamstrings like this in a LONG time.

**Edit**  I am not starting shit with Adam (he has plenty of people to do that already), I just wanted to see how hard this was myself.  I will add that I am 5' 9 so I think thats a few inches shorter that Adam.  If he can do it, he must have som crazy endurance in the low back and hams.

I recommend you do it on a weekly basis if you can.

its a good idea. the Marine Corps has been using it for decades....

...it does work however....

I still date 16 and 17 year old girls. 16 is legal here in NC. They know how to have a hell of alot more fun than older girls. Plus it doesn`t cost you anything,they dont expect anything extravagant and they won`t cheat on you cause they are either in school or at home by 11 o clock.

you will watch your sets to failure increase weekly. its pretty awesome.

they used to force us to get 20 reps (forced sets with someone holding your legs) every time you made a headcall in bootcamp.

later, they would make us do pull ups with full a.l.i.c.e. packs....prob 50-60lbs worth of gear...

I do it for calves and pullups....been doing that ever since I started lifting.  Prefer things like this over forced reps.

I have done sets to 50 pullups every back day. But that was only on backdays.

Now, I want to do 100 everyday and not just backday.

Hey WesMantooth, how proficient did you get at pullups and how has it helped your back development?

Thats impressive.

How about now?  Do you still keep up the proficency and what effect has it had on your development.

I was used to doing sets to 50.  I must say, after doing them to 100, My abs really got hit hard along with my whole upper body, chest and shoulders.

as far as development...i have incorporated some type of pull up in every back exercise. i have even devolped various accesories to "clip" onto a bar to vary grip and positioning....my buddy has a welder, so its pretty easy to put ideas from paper to reality.

my mid back is extremely dense and hold decent width even though ive been out of training since july due to a car accident and shoulder surgery. i have been back in the gym fro about 3 weeks now...and the pullups are still there....starting at 5 sets of 10 now....worhking back to 100% as soon as i can....shoulder permitting

Can you please share your ideas?  I am fascinated.  Also do you do ever just do a pullup and Hold for as long as you can until you drop, then immediately try again.

I have been messing with that technique as well and found that there is no better back exercise.

If you did not train legs, you could've maybe approached 70+.

If you trained for it, don't you think you could possibly build up to it?

He could.  Also, I may be wrong, but Curt may have injured himself on Deadlifts before.  Not sure if that came into play at all or not.

Perhaps he can clear that up.

I have been messing with that technique as well and found that there is no better back exercise.

of course...ill try to put some pics together...

i use a 2 ropes...no knots with a caribiner at the end(one for each hand..helps grip strength)
an ez curl bar with a caribiner on each side...helps with different hand positioning
standard seated cable row handle (the  "V" lookin' one)
tricep rope, try pull up in a "thumbs down" grip...that one is tough
good ole' wide grip pull ups
close grip pull ups

im developing a "fat bar" one now actually...

negatives are good too. works best with a training partner...pull up...negative until failure, then have your partner help you back up..repeat for reps.

50 straight reps with 225, wow.

50 in one workout and i'd be quite happy with myself.

Yes, it was after quads....and I was going a tad lighter because of  a recent injury.  Do I think I COULD get to 100....maybe....could I have gotten there had I not done legs....NO CHANCE.  Like I said, the cramping that happened would eventually happen.  Also, the holding of that bar in place would also be a task on its own.

Sorry, but I call bullshit on this one as well.

The world record for pull-ups are held by John Curd Edmonds, 117.

Pull-up competitions are usually won at around 30-40 reps.

So either post a video, or this claim is IMHO a fairy tale.

Just the way I see it.

BTW, if you prove me wrong, I'll be the first to admit your superior strength and whatnot.
