how much does everybody use on upright rows
« on: July 10, 2008, 05:51:44 PM »
up untill a few workouts ago i never went heay on upright rows. about 4 weeks ago i felt strong and was super pumped so i decided to use the olympic bar and plates for upright rows.

normally if i do them i use the pre loaded bars and would go much over 100-110 lbs.

now, a couple workouts into doing heavy upright rows, i am easily doing high rep sets with 185 on the bar. is this good amount of weight? i never see anybody in the gym doing upright rows so i have no idea how much weight guys use.

185lbs.....seems pretty good. The most i ever do is 120 (pre loaded bars) but i do them with a wide grip. I dunno if that would affect the weight you are able to handle. Also i use pretty controlled from, so not too much swinging and jerking them up. Just seems like an exercise that i feel using loose form could be somewhat dangerous...
No doubt about it...

i've never seen anyone use more than 135 without it being pretty much a hang clean.

Must get tough rolling that around the parking lot.

Seriously, I've tried them with a cambered bar as well as straight bar, straight bar screws with my wrists, cambered bar feels weird in my shoulders. I just stick with shrugs (db and BB, to the front and the sides, sometimes behind) and these weird shrugs that you pull the dumbells straight up your sides, works the traps and rear delts.

Try them with DB's, better ROM and easy on the wrists.

Is that your gym ???

What's the advantage to doing upright rows? vs shrugs of various styles.

I like doing them on the low pulley with a rope. Even better range of motion!! :)

180+ is VERY strong.... especially if you use a wide grip... almost unbelievable if you have a fragile structure.

Appears that Candi is doing Hi-pulls rather than upright rows. Novice BB'ers tend to get these two mixed up. Can use much more weight with the wider grip Hi-pull version (185 for him....250 plus for more experienced lifters), but can only go about as high as the lower/mid chest.

The classic Up-right row will call upon a narrower grip and a pull ending near the upper chest or under the chin. It can also affect the biceps more strongly. If pulling the bar too far forward, while pulling up, (out and away from the body) on either lift, than unnatural stress is put on the shoulder joints. Can be the cause of injury because a lot of guy's just do the exercise wrong in the first place.

Up-rights and Hi-pulls are two of my favorite exercises. I prefer the one arm at a time when using a DB. Can brace myself better, with the free hand, when heavier DB's are used. And as suggest by The Coach, easier on the wrist/elbows/joints overall. Main reason that a majority of trainee's prefer the EZ bar.  The Olympic style EZ bar is better balanced and smoother than most regular exercise bars. Vince G. had a version of a 90 degree Hi-pull which worked the lateral head of the delts very well. Good Luck.

Upright rows go deeper in the sub-scapular giving added stability and strength to the shoulder girdle, also effects the erector spinae to a certain degree simply because it come into play in the rowing motion.

If you are using a grip wider than shoulder width, it's called a hi pull.

Upright rows are a narrow grip exercise.

I do upright rows with my hands about 12-14" apart, i do sets of 15 with 155 at the most, as i value my shoulders these days.

I've seen a man do legit 225 upright rows for 15 reps at my gym.

i should correct myself. i've seen ONE dude use 185 for upright rows, and he's a guy that shoulder presses 315 for a few reps and benches in the 400s. anyone else of mere mortal size that goes above 135 is 99% likely to be doing it with a lot of body english.

I agree... Tank Abott, who is naturally a beast, used 315 with superloose form.
Johnny Jackson, who claims to be able to upright row 405, struggled with one plate on each side in BFTO.

no joke candi, i would love to see that on video. i find upright rows to be damn impressive when done heavy. it's like seeing one of those rare freaks that uses heavy-ass DBs on side raises. if you could toss up a clip of it, that'd be cool as hell.
