Are atheists mentally ill?

Thanks to a couple of surveys, it’s being put about in certain circles that atheists have higher IQs than believers. That may or may not be the case, but one problem with this argument is that, if you accept "average group differences in IQ”, you get into all sorts of sinister debates which bien pensant atheist Lefties might find less to their liking.

So let’s not go down that unhappy road. Let’s dispense with the crude metric of IQ and look at the actual lives led by atheists, and believers, and see how they measure up. In other words: let’s see who is living more intelligently.

And guess what: it’s the believers. A vast body of research, amassed over recent decades, shows that religious belief is physically and psychologically beneficial – to a remarkable degree.

In 2004, scholars at UCLA revealed that college students involved in religious activities are likely to have better mental health. In 2006, population researchers at the University of Texas discovered that the more often you go to church, the longer you live. In the same year researchers at Duke University in America discovered that religious people have stronger immune systems than the irreligious. They also established that churchgoers have lower blood pressure.

Meanwhile in 2009 a team of Harvard psychologists discovered that believers who checked into hospital with broken hips reported less depression, had shorter hospital stays, and could hobble further when they left hospital – as compared to their similarly crippled but heathen fellow-sufferers.

As a young lad I scored a 138 on an IQ test.  All it did was get me put into a "gifted" program with a bunch of nerds and added a boatload of extra school work.  :-\

Using data from a U.S. study of 6,825 adolescents, the authors found that atheists scored 6 IQ points higher than non atheists.

Several Gallup poll studies of the general population have shown that those with higher IQs tend not to believe in God. A study published in Social Psychology Quarterly in March 2010 also stated that "atheism ...correlates with higher intelligence".

the main reason i love this kind of argument is that it proves that believers just care about what feels good, not what's true.

even if it were true that 100% of theists were happier than 100% of atheists, that wouldn't make god exist. it would just mean the lie is more comforting than reality.

Can a narcissist believe in a higher power or do they believe the world begins and ends with themselves? A god-complex if you will...

Allow me.

It matters not what you believe or more to the point, profess to believe but how you live your life both in public and private.  I have known Atheists that live many of the tenets taught by the Christ and an equal (if not greater) number of professing Christians that fail to live His word.

To be sure, the hope of Resurrection is a far more wonderful climax to the end of all things than is the emptiness of the nothing that could possibly await us all.  The former holds the promise, the hope if you will of being reunited with loved ones as well as the answers to any questions we may now have, while the latter offers nothing but the cold reality that when you are dead, everything and everyone you know for all intents and purposes ceases to exist.

I prefer to hope.  If someone else thinks otherwise that is fine with me but that does not make either of us morons.

it's rather suspect for you to believe something to be the case simply because you hope it to be so. one could "hope" many things to be true about the universe, but that doesn't mean there is any reason to think that they're real.

The hope of my faith sustains me.  It is not meant as in insult to any, including you.

As I said, I know Atheists that are good people.  I know false Christians too.  I suspect no one.

What you "suspect" is beyond me.  What one could hope for is manners.  But then, this is GetBig.

Even science has struggled to find a way to destroy energy (that which matter is composed of).  To the point where we consider that a LAW.

Currently, in this universe - we do not believe a single "unit" of energy can be destroyed.  Resurrection is a long shot.  The continual existence of everything you are composed of is not.  Many of your elements were composed in a star.  Most of you will not be able to get your head around that.

I respect people who quietly hope for the christian way to prevail, after death, but it's not necessary - unless you're unprepared to begrudgingly admit that you're unlikely to reunite with recomposed loved ones, after death.

I've had a few conversations with people about this to know that they do not consider continual existence of the energy they are composed of to be enough.  For me, I'm just happy that the energy I am composed of will persist - hoping for more is really unlikely.

Atheism is for the intelligent because the intelligent have a natural curiosity.  It doesn't mean the intelligent cannot be christians, but they must first suspend their disbelief at the lack of evidence for this type of thing.  A difficult task.

Quality of life CAN be difficult for atheists, but at the same respect, christians walk around missing out on a lot of interesting things, because they think they are going to exist after death.  Neither camp is easy.

i met a girl last night and we played a little bit religious debating, but agreed to not get angry or fall out, she defended religion, i asked the hard questions, must say it was a very interesting and productive talk.but with the questions, i provided slight modifications and interpretations on how to make biblical stuff seem possible, so i had neutral as possible stance.

we both believe there is something out there, whos to say that the creation force isnt god.

i aske last question and what if its all nothing and we just die.she said well then atleast we die with hope into something.

::) You die wasting your life resigning your brain over to ignorance.  At least you will remain ignorant I guess. (not sure that would be a great goal to have)

So how exactly are atheists mentally ill if they don't believe? I don't care what others believe, but this is the same kind of post as if I went attacking any religious group.

I'd call it spiritually retarded.

Atheists... claim to believe in nothing or noone. Kind of ironic, no?

"Spiritually retarded" definitely a fitting term.

At least in the end of their pitiful lives, they always change their minds and renounce their non-existent choice to not make a choice even though they actually have made a choice....lol

The sun sets and rises on the good and the evil. Shows that they are loved in spite of themselves.

as opposed to believing in mythical stories and a book wrote thousands of years ago (nevermind the thousands of years of history before the book was written... all those ppl must be in hell  ::) )... and a 'religion' named after a man who called himself the 'son of god'. you've gotta be mentally ill to believe that foolishness, let alone defend it.
