LOL!!  Too fucking funny!  The thing on the left was actually dispensing training & nutritional advice as if he had personally prepped the last five Mr. Olympia winners himself, while at the same time competing in and winning the amateur Arnold Classic.

I had an acquaintance that was like our former resident king of Kit Kat kingdom.  This dude was a former Division I college athlete, so one would think he knew how to get himself in shape.  

I honestly thought he was joking with his requests.  He knew I was very into strength training, so I assumed when he said:  "I want you to help me get in shape" that he meant he wanted me to design a program that he could do in any gym, and he knew that I would teach him how to properly squat, chin and dip (to me, the cornerstone of any program, and the very least of what ANYONE should be doing, provided they can chin and dip--if not, then we move onto something that will get them to chin/dip).

Anyhow, we meet up and he is in far worse shape than I could have imagined.  He is borderline diabetic, and is 280 lbs. with almost zero muscle.  I tried not to be hard on the guy, and I know he is not going to be able to chin or dip, so I tell him that I will meet him at the gym and help him for a few sessions (he was home for the holidays on vacation back in our town to visit family).

He tells me how he hates to train in a gym, and he wants to do everything outside.  I tell him he needs strength training to build some muscle.  He doesn't want to do that.

I ask him about his diet (I notice he is drinking Coke, and I am drinking unsweetened iced green tea--the place we met for lunch has this on the menu).

He tells me he hates coffee, so he drinks Coke.  I ask him how many a day, and I cringe at the answer.  He tells me he drinks about a 2 liter a day.  At this point I think the dude has had a labotomy since we last saw each other.

Do you eat sweets?  He then tells me how he works in an office that has bowls of M&M's, bowls of the little snack sized candy bars, etc.  Okay, how many of those do you eat a day?  He tells me that he eats up to 10 of these snack sized bars a day (which I estimated to be about 3 candy bars worth) and a "couple" of handfuls of M&M's.  

I look at him and ask him if he wants to die.  He says:  "Of course not."  I tell him that he needs to be strong willed and cut out all of the fucking soda and candy he eats each day.  Just do that for 4 weeks, and then give me a call.  THEN you can start to clean your body up.  But you are killing yourself from the inside, man!!!

Now this is a guy who makes a VERY good living, and graduated from a University where he played Division I baseball as a starter.  

I couldn't believe how dumb he was when it came to diet.

Tommy, that woman is in FAR better shape than him.  But!!!!!  Notice how she is flexing her calf by standing on her toes!!!! 

Tommy, I did not have a neck like you, but I trained my neck on a Nautilus 4 way machine that I bought and put in my basement like a man possessed.  At one point, I had to get my shirts custom made to 18" neck, while weighing a fairly lean 200 lbs.  I was all neck, traps and quads (sort of odd looking).  I now wear 17" neck shirts and am leaner, but I have been deadlifting on the regular again, so the yoke is coming back.

I had to stop doing flexion though, as that apparently was giving me a sleep disorder.

Imagine talking to a mid 30s man, and he tells you how he drinks a 2 liter of Coke a day.  

Because he doesn't like coffee.

I'm not a fan of diet soda in the least, and have stated here many times that I have maybe 2 Mexican Coca Colas a year when at a Mexican restaurant and not drinking Negra Modelo from the tap (they have this on tap at my favorite Mexican eatery--awesome stuff).

But Coca Cola has 27 grams of sugar per 8 oz. serving, and he is drinking 8+ servings of this per day?  

I ask him about why he doesn't try the diet version, and he says:  "I heard the ingredients in diet soda are bad for you."

I thought I was on fucking Candid Camera.

This might not be the best place to post this, but after having two children, a busy job, some hobbies, strength training took a backseat for the first time in my life in roughly 18 years.

A very wise S&C coach once told me that one could get by and be very very well built just doing squats, chins and dips.

Well, because my time was limited, and sleep was a commodity (2 small girls) I did just that starting about 6 months ago.  That is how I got started back, just doing those in my basement, even though I have plenty more equipment to use both at my house and my parents home. 

I cleaned up my diet, and guess what?  Best shape I have been in for a long time. 

I am adding things here and there (deadlifts, curls, tricep pushdowns, calf raises, inclines, lateral raises, etc.), but these are the cornerstone of my training.  I wish I had made these the foundation years ago.

Kick ass machine.  There have been several versions of the Nautilus 4-way neck and they are all great. Small foot print, very inexpensive for a Nautilus piece. Great machine.
