Nasa's record keeping was dismal..many parts and equipment were made by outside contractors and engineers many of whom don't exist anymore, many of whom are dead. Everything was on paper back then. A lot has been lost. Nasa basically builds satellites now and is involved in scientific projects, to get anything into space they have to go to the Russians or private companies, kind of ironic isn't it?
