And yet at the end he was trying to have Marcus Reinhardt, a nobody kid from Germany, train him for a comeback.  That's like Einstein getting math tutoring from a High School physics teacher.

I had further conversations with him much later, talks in which he was lucid, no longer bitter about the '80 Olympia ("water under the bridge," he said) and, while he came to ridiculous conclusions about training, he himself wanted Marcus Reinhardt to train *him* for a comeback.

While that's both laughable and sad at the same time -- Mike, near death, thinking about training again -- it says something that he'd put such confidence in Marcus who, albeit a HIT guy, advocates plenty more work than Mike's latter day methods.

The issue with bodybuilding to me has more to do with the fact that, to the public at large, bodybuilders do nothing with their muscle but pose.

The closest bodybuilding has ever come to mainstream, per se, is American Gladiators, which was loaded with top NPC amateur bodybuilders and female IFBB pros. But, that had more to do their athletic prowess (Female powerball was my favorite  ).

I guess the promoters today figure that they're never going to get mainstream acceptance. But, thanks to the internet, they no longer need it. They don't have to dance around the steroid issue; they don't have to explain away the "weirdness" of the "sport".

Hollywood has plastic suits and CGI; so the need for buffed dudes to be superheroes or 300-lbers to play the Incredible Hulk has greatly diminished.

Are you kidding have you forgotten abot professional wrestling? How many NPC bodybuilders wound up in the WWF and WWE millions of more viewers than American gladiators

My view leans more towards what will generate the most money to keep the industry alive. Unless we are able to make this more mainstream, it will fall to the wayside. Society, Hollywood and popular culture as a whole is less moved by the sheer size of Mr. Olympia competitors. Also, I've spoken to and met many IFBB pros from the 80's up to present day and these guys don't look well in person. Again, just my opinion. I know everyone has a different view of what constitutes looking "well" or "healthy".

For me, Arnold at his prime was pretty huge. Heck, for me, guys like Paul Grant (Wales - Mr. Universe Contestant) or even Ed Corney in 1975 were just right in size and proportions. I don't think the extreme conditioning is a good thing.

If I had to pick a bodybuilder from the past that had just enough size and proportions and the right kind of conditioning, as crazy as he was, Mike Mentzer would be it. I'd even venture to say that instead of the supposed "225lb" he would compete at, he could have likely done just as good at around 205-210lb.

And plenty of other wrestlers looked nothing like NPC bodybuilders and made millions in the WWF or WCW.

Umaga, Yokozuna, Earthquake, Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, JYD.....not exactly stage ready. Plus, we've all seen our share of bodybuilders FLOP trying to be wrestlers: Paul Dillett, Achim "Brakus" Albrecht, Rene Dupree, Aaron Baker.....just to name a few.

Most of the Gladiators were NPC or IFBB bodybuilders.

Gone downhill. Amazing how guys can’t apply tan correctly still at this level. Hunter looks like a fat faced 300 lbs man. Ramy walking on stage with an an infection in his glute. No one except Hadi was conditioned, and not even at his best conditioning.

The sport has steadily gone downhill the last few years.
