Vince,

I remember seeing one of your mr. canada pics.  Can you post it as well as any others you have from back then.  The photo was kind of dark and was in black and white.  I was hoping maybe you had some other photos.

Thanks.

calm down, just buy a flex to hold you over stud.

Great physique Vince!
and thx for posting the pics!

I remember reading some of your theories on DOMS.  They were interesting.

What are the latest developments on your ideas?  What do the workouts look like (frequency, intensity, reps, sets, ect)?

Also, how tall are you and how much did you weigh in those pics from 1970?

Thanks Vince.

Is this guy a fan or a weirdo?

Vince,

You looked fantastic as Mr. Canada. I don't think there are many people on this board who wouldn't want a physique like that.

For the record, what were your measurements then? I'm guessing 18" arms, 48" chest, and a weight of 200-210. Am I close?

As I age, I experience the same situation as you - it's very easy to gain weight and hard to lose it. I am as active as I was as a teen ( I have  been a bicycle racer since that time and still ride the same hours per week).

I am beginning to think that our high sugar, high starch diet does some serious damage to our pancreas over the years. Its just a guess. When I was young, I could eat all sorts of garbage and still be lean.

The increased onset of diabetes in the US is making me think that there is something more in play besides slow metabolism and lack of exercise. I changed my diet some months back to low carb, high fat and moderate protein. I dropped 15 pounds in a flash (about 6 weeks), and have been slowly losing 1 pound a week since then. At this rate I will be as lean as I want to be in about 12-15 weeks. I experience periodic urges to eat "junk" but for the most part, this is a very easy plan to follow.

I had a blood test recently and my "bad" cholesterol has dropped like a rock. So did the triglycerides. The doctor wondered what the heck I have been doing, he was so impressed, lol. I told him, the "Banting Diet"

To be honest i'd say it was solid for that time, not excellent. Canadian BB standards were not world-class overall then IMO, improved considerably during the 70s. Good calves but thighs for example seriously lacking attention. There was another BB from Canada that i remember around that time, Jerome something maybe Vince knows who got a little press in the early 70s.

The best Canadian BB i remember from the 70s was Louis Dickenson of Ottawa in the mid-70s. Like Dillet of Montreal, not indigent Canadian-Carribean genetics at 6'1", 230 lb. and lacking in focus, didn't get beyond some regional wins. Roger Walker size with small joints and minus the blockiness.

Here is the first image online of the biceps-supinator

We really need a machine for this?

Here is the first image online of the biceps-supinator. This was invented by myself and built totally by myself in my engineering factory. I tried to sell the design to Nautilus and Cybex but they were not interested. So this machine has cost me over $100,000 to patent and build. Surely it is the most expensive machine ever installed in a gym.

This machine was conceived in 1986, and first conception on paper was in 1991. I obtained patents from the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Germany and Australia. You have to apply to each country. Then you have to pay thousands of dollars per year to maintain those patents. I wouldn't patent anything in the future! I built the first version in 2001 and then modified it several times since. The last major surgery occurred last year. I am quite pleased with this machine. There are many adjustments and it really is a complex machine with lots of angles needed. It works, though! Lots of stainless steel on the prototype. I will paint it silver soon.

Even Arthur Jones was unable to build this machine. It is undoubtedly the most complicated bodybuilding machine with weight stacks that has ever been installed in a gym. When used properly it can result in an absolutely brutal biceps workouts. You can twist the arms and get a resistance. Each arm can be trained separately, too. The curl plates are 20 pounds and the supination plates are 5 1/2 pounds.

Awesome machine................. .or you could just use one of THESE!!

You have withstood some major bashing here and came back.  Your engineering ideas and real world experiance make you to some,, seem arrogant......but for the most of us, we can learn a few things from you.....

It is quite disheartening to find others copying my designs and companies not at all interested. I mean, should a unique invention of a bodybuilding machine have to be announced on Getbig? I haven't been invited to write for any magazines or talk about equipment, either. No wonder most of us become cynical in this world. If you don't promote yourself I doubt anyone else will. That much is certain.

Ideas in any business only go so far without someone expert & determined to bring them home.

Harold Zinkin's Universal Machine for example, was generally good but could've been better, had some serious flaws that could've been avoided IMO. Same with some of the Nautilus machines. They both found funding & distribution.

I visited Sydney University where I got my masters degree in philosophy to consult with the head of the mechanical engineering department. He couldn't solve the problem of having the machine generate resistance in two degrees of freedom. I did read robot technology but the unique problem I had was to have those mechanisms outside the user arms. The key was having a pulley at the elbow pivot point. That allowed two forces to be generated separately or at the same time.

I would say I spent at least 200 hours on the design of this machine. Those who scoff at engineering and gym equipment should try building machines. Have a look at who has made machines for bodybuilding among champion bodybuilders. I can think of Larry Scott who had some basic apparatus and not many others who came up with anything at all that is memorable. It is quite disheartening to find others copying my designs and companies not at all interested. I mean, should a unique invention of a bodybuilding machine have to be announced on Getbig? Hmm. Sentiments like these are what separate us from the saints: the need for recognition; the need for some  satisfactory accolade. Take heart, Vince. The Roman Emperors on their returning triumphs had a slave whisper  in their ear 'all this is fleeting.'  :)

Here are two photos from the 1970 Mr Canada contest held in Vancouver, BC.

While I'm not a fan of your super long posts I think that's an impressive physique. And everyone making fun of your current physique should note that Vince not only built a better physique than 99.9% of everyone on getbig, but he did it back in 1970. Not bad. (But please, from now on, edit your posts to 1/4 their length :) )

Here is my seated rowing machine. A unique machine made by myself. Perhaps the best of its kind?

Vince, Do me a favor and blow out that 1983 suspended acoustic ceiling and those terrible florescent lights. Regardless of what is behind them, paint it flat black and hang some low intensity xenon lights. The space looks like a 1980's insurance office with weights, and that lighting is diabolical. It's close to being a kick-ass gym but the ceiling must go.

Thanks.

Vince, you've got my respect, regardless.  You've done a lot, as far as I'm concerned.

But why one earth would you spend such an amount of money on a machine that isn't making you any money?  Why?  Or, have any pro's, past or current (or anybody else competing on any level) had any amazing results with it?

I hear that you've got a great gym, that's evident.  But inventing machines, what's the point?...I give ya props for the brains and dollars it took to get the thing done, but why bother?  After all that money you've spent, you'd think perhaps to spend a few grand more and give em' away to different gyms, just so that the public in general can see for themselves how great it is.

Anyways....

I will think about the ceiling and lighting when we shift our gym to brand new premises in about 3 years.

3 years? 3 years? Vince baby sweetheart... you and 3 Philippino's can blow that ceiling out and hang new lights in one weekend. 3 years... some gyms don't last that long start-to-finish.

I put over an inch on my calves and they were 18 1/4 cold standing straight up. My arms were 18 cold at the largest. I never had 18 inch cold arms before. I could pump my arms to 18 3/4 in the past but the biggest in the morning was 17 7/8. I put an inch on the arms and over an inch on the calves in 30 days.

I concluded that DOMS is the key to getting big rapidly. Get the muscle really sore and then retrain before the soreness goes away. In practice this means retraining the muscle every 3 or 4 days. If the muscle doesn't get sore you have to try something different, including training more frequently.

Here is why your muscles "grew" on the protocol: INFLAMMATION!!!

Have you read the "one day arm cure"? Same fucking thing. Not much to do with actual muscle fiber hypertrophy.

Just like in the Fat peoples thread where you only respond to Goatboy, Debussey and at times DK but otherwise avoid all posts by anyone trying to make a logical argument. I mean it's not like about a dozen former or current obese people haven't made good points or rebuttals concerning your outlandish posts yet you fail to respond to a single one of them but go on posting multiple paragraphs when Goatboys claims you like fatties. ::)

The Beef think this guy is out to lunch.

Long before you take anything to a prototype level, one approaches companies with a legal " statement on non disclosure." A signed SND is as good a pending patent and casts a hundred bucks or so from a lawyer.

Most large fitness companies welcome designs being submitted and even solicit them on their websites and no large producer of quality fitness equipment would develop a machine ( which was submitted to them ) without a partnership agreement simply because the bad press resulting from less then ethical practices is not worth the 10% they would have to pay out as a production royalty.

Anyone who drops a $100,000 on the development of a machine that is overly complex and could never be mass produced cost effectively is a fool. The Beef worked as a high level production supervisor for years and something far less complex would be difficult enough to manufacture ( just think about someone trying to assemble that out of the box ) it's a true homage to Rub Goldberg.

Agree entirely on avoidance of intricate, not a good move. On the other hand there's still plenty of room for better designs. The big name brands are still inconsistent.

I thought about a biceps machine for a long time. The strongest position where you can isolate your biceps is the seated or incline position. That is why I chose a seated position. You use this machine as if you were curling dumbbells.

If you had lopsided dumbbells you could simulate the supination by holding the handles close to one side. The other side would feel heavier and you would recruit the supination muscles to turn them as you curled them.

It was really tricky to get everything to feel right. The counterweight is required to balance the movement because the handles are heavy and made of solid stainless steel. The machine has been made to last. Sort of like a tombstone!

why dont you just save 100,000 and curl a dumbell for god's sake?

Just look at Vinces arms NOW, compared to his 70's pics and you see that the Biceps-Super-Supinator is teh best biceps growing wonder machine there is.

BTW, Vince Basile also invented protein AND oxygen, but he could not afford the patents because he had to build the Supinator.
I heard that nobody else then Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to play the Supinator in the Supinator movie, coming out next year.

Too bad Vince forgot to buy the rights to the name "Supinator", so Arnie's making all the money...  ::)

I am currently involved in designs for an equipment company.

Complexity's not a problem at all for using a machine, but in terms of durability consider the value of simplicity on the AK-47 or T-34, vs. the Space Shuttle's problems related to complexity.
Title: Re: Vince Basile - Mr. Canada
Post by: Hurricane Beef ! on May 30, 2007, 08:39:54 AM
Complexity is not that important if something is new and effective. The idea is to make something that gym owners believe their members need. This happened about 20 years ago re aerobic computerized machines. These machines are now required by all gyms.

I agree it is foolish to patent any design as an individual. Patent attorneys do not disclose actual costs for patents. Costs can blow way out of proportion. Once you are in for a certain amount you just have to keep going. It is a business decision. However, if the design cannot be sold then all that investment is more or less wasted. Try to understand that when you believe you have something worthwhile you want protection. Patents are just too expensive and patent attorneys have marble floors paid by foolish inventors. That much is acknowledged. Protection is way too expensive and governments should encourage inventors by keeping fees, etc., down but they don't get involved in this enterprise.

How many here can come up with some new design for gym equipment?

The Beef respects what you were trying to do and the way you responded to my overly harsh post. You are correct, few people can do or are willing to try ( you can't hit a home run without getting up to the plate ) what you have. Peace.

Respectfully,
The Beef

I made this leg press in 1987. Probably the best in the world, too. It has shock absorbers on it and the carriage bolts together. It can have two positions: lying down or seated. This unit cannot tip over.

It's a fcking leg press, just like any other leg press out there.

Your machines are fine, and it's cool you build them yourself but face it, if you buy one you get the same thing only way cheaper, given the fact you have to spend 100000 bucks to design a curl-machine.  ::) ::)

Sometimes I use materials I have laying around in the factory. Those rails were from a spa pool we had in one gym from 1990. I put them on the foot rest so people wouldn't walk into the low unit. Function was paramount there. Not everything I build will win a prize! How many gym owners do you know who even know how to weld or would get their hands dirty?

Props to you. That's really a good thing.

Your gym needs some work done though, and badly. Different lights, some color changes, some plants here and there. Do you have any free weights?

I was 5 - 9 1/2 and about 190 pounds in the Mr Canada. I was about 200 in the 75 shot.

Over the years I have always been trying to figure out what the exact theory of hypertrophy was. In other words, how does one go about making the muscles grow rapidly and to the maximum, and naturally. The DOMS theory just came to me about 9 years ago when I was trying to make my arms grow. They stopped at 17 inches and wouldn't grow no matter how much mechanical tension I applied. I changed an exercise and included the lying triceps extension and voila, sore muscles the next day. That was a revelation. I then wondered what would happen if I kept the muscle sore. Would it keep growing? Yes! I was doing arms and calves on alternate days just to see what would happen. Well, I sure got strong quickly. Two factors conspired to end that experiment and now I know better and can avoid those injuries. I was putting my elbows on the pad and I ended up with sore elbows. Apparently the sheath over the elbows became inflamed and I had to stop training triceps for a while. Today, we recommend keeping the elbows over the edge of the pads and no further injury has occurred. I need a lot of high rep warm ups to train heavy now.

The calves were a different story. I used short bouncing movements and my strength exploded. I was doing over ten sets with about 700 pounds on the standing calf machine for up to 70 reps, over and over with about 15 seconds rest between sets.

The key to getting DOMS is to do quite a few sets with the maximum resistance and each set taken to where you can't do any more reps. It remains an open question what would happen with extended maximum sets done for 4 to 12 hours a day. I am not that crazy to find out!

There is probably an equivalence theory that allows for different methods to generate the same results. Using DOMS as a guide it is possible to do whatever causes it and grow to the maximum and at the quickest rate. HST and HIT are probably not optimal methods. Volume with maximum resistance is the key.

The amount of resistance is guided by the level of DOMS generated. I am finding it is better to aim for about 15 reps in exercises. What happens is the reps drop off by the third maximum set. Doing 12 plus reps helps generate lactic acid pain and the pump. These are not irrelevant factors. Larry Scott discovered if you can pump the muscle bigger it will be bigger the next day.

My theory has been dismissed by those with agendas re science and pet theories. Heck, if something works then that is all the proof you need. Arthur Jones and Mike Mentzer were smart guys but high intensity training is not the short cut they said it was. We have to find the safest method and HIT will cause injuries, sooner or later. Arthur was absolutely correct when he encouraged us to not demonstrate strength. Why on earth Ronnie needs to deadlift and squat over 800 pounds is nothing but showing off. That is definitely how not to train for size.

Progression is a key factor so one should always be striving to increase resistance. However, it is imperative that exercise form and selection targets the muscle. If no DOMS then little growth will occur. This is not my opinion but a physiological fact that will be proven once the scientists get interested in maximum hypertrophy.

So we now know how to train and when to train and how many reps. The only thing most have to figure out is what exercises to use to generate soreness. Triceps need more than pressdowns. An exercise with the arm in a stretched position and arms stabilized in two directions is required.

Free weights might work but machines are better for most exercises. I don't expect most muscleheads to comprehend this or abandon their beliefs. That is why they won't appreciate what I have written.

The amazing thing is we all knew about DOMS. We all tried to avoid it. That is the opposite to what is optimal. The body adapts. Selye was right about that. They refer to that adaptation as the repeated bout effect. You have to avoid the RBE happening and that is why you keep the muscles sore.

You don't need to get all your muscles sore at the same time. You can target adjoining muscles and get them to grow. Do that for a few weeks then change and target other muscles. I am doing triceps and lat pulldowns at the moment. Biceps are very hard to get sore. With my torn biceps I can use my biceps supinator machine effectively.

Anyway, I am just some old fart living in Australia. So what if I have one of the best gyms in the world and have invented unique equipment. No one cares and I am dismissed as irrelevant and fat. I could prove my theory but whatever for? I have conceived a machine to train athletes for running. I approached a national track and field coach and he wasn't interested. Why should I bother? There is no interest in such things. Everyone is an expert is in this silly and self-indulgent pastime.

More like it Vince this is the stuff we wanna hear! Not the usual mindless drivel that goes nowhere.

Goatboy won't ever show his face or physique here. That much is certain.

About the bench press with safety rails. Well, the rails are set so that the bar cannot compress the neck. There is plenty of depth for low bench presses. Ditto, inclines and declines.

Since when is stretch so important, anyway? It amazes me the old bodybuilders tales that are believed by so many around the gym scene. Daily I am amazed by what people actually believe. They hold their ideas as if set in stone, too. Quite impenetrable are muscleheads. The stretched position is important in triceps and calf training. Not sure about chest.

sorry to break ur fantasy grandpa vince

you put a safety rail and think you are a genius but the idea is amazingly dumb, makes benching very awkward and ineffective.

then u go blow hundreds of thousands designing machines and polishing them till it shines. then you probably cant sell a single one because no one cares. ppl are happy with dumbells and basic gym machines that work just as well and cost much less

Ah, it should be refreshing to hear the opinions of so many experts.

What is wrong about have a vision for a gym with the best possible equipment? For example, I make all my handles out of self-polishing stainless steel. They don't tarnish and there is no chrome to peel off.

I made my equipment for longevity. I have a son and 2 daughters who work at our club. I make things so bodybuilders will use them and that they cannot destroy. They are way over engineered for that reason.

No one has ever complained about the safety rails on my equipment. We have not had an injury with any of that apparatus, either. We have some super strong guys in the gym. One weighs about 350 pounds and is very strong. They would tell me if the equipment interfered with their training.

Sure it cost me more to make my own equipment. That is my choice and what should it matter to anyone else? I am doing my thing and everyone else can do theirs.

hey big guy relax. the only one claiming to be expert here is u, i never said i was an expert, it was just my opinion. as for blowing loads of cash on machines, i just said it was unessary and foolish, didnt say it was wrong. u can build them out of moonrock if u want to

One day all commercial benches using barbells will require safety rails. Why this industry hasn't been regulated is a mystery. I design safety into all of my equipment.

I am surprised those who are trained as engineers haven't commented on my designs. I did receive one PM congratulating me on my equipment. He had a position at a university in engineering.

Agree entirely on the rails; it not only helps with the obvious in terms of safety but in addition, is one of the reasons i like good machines-the added safety allows further training into failure without worry.

Quote
Since when is stretch so important, anyway? It amazes me the old bodybuilders tales that are believed by so many around the gym scene. Daily I am amazed by what people actually believe. They hold their ideas as if set in stone, too. Quite impenetrable are muscleheads. The stretched position is important in triceps and calf training. Not sure about chest.

True, it's ok to question convention.

Engineers are theoretically the best suited for design but in the real world don't always come up with the best results.

It is strange that I am posting so many of my photos here. I have never put up any photos of myself in my gym and I have owned a gym since 1971. Others put a few photos up but I never did. The Mr Canada images were never displayed. A few years ago we did a history of the gym and a small image of me winning that title is in the entrance hall. I guess after seeing how many photos Vince Gironda had of himself on the walls of his gym I vowed never to do that.

I have a mate, Robert Nailon, who is a great physique photographer and artist. He always had images of here I am with so and so. I didn't follow suit and didn't take many photos of champions who visited my gym or home. I don't have a photo of Arnold and me posing and he was at my home for dinner and came to my gym twice. There was a photo of the two of us when I was interviewing him at one of his first seminars in 1974. He posed in my gym then.

Here I am with Zabo Koszewski, who was known as Mr Abs. He did situps and midsection work for 40 minutes or more. I never did many situps. In those days not many guys remained muscular all year. I visited Golds Gym on my honeymoon in June 1969. I was married for 30 and am still in business with Roz who co-owns our gym.
hahahaha, what a couple of physical specimens. ::)

I always liked the archer pose. I tried to show Arnold in 1968 how to do it at Golds Gym but he pushed me away. I preferred to do the complete body arc. Here is my interpretation while showing Willie Vuki in Fiji in January 1969. I wrote a story about Fiji that was published in Strength and Health magazine. I will post it later.

WOW...I'm shocked. First, you try and give the barbarians advices (unsolicited) and they almost beat you more senseless than you are....and now you try and give ARNOLD a few pointers on posing and he "pushed you away".....at least you're still the same guy you were back in the day....annoying.

You were starting to look a little normal with the equipment pics, etc........until.... you took a sharp left at the corner of Stupid St. and Imanannoyinglittlefuck Ave.

A couple things......

The bicep supinator machine is different from what I can tell because it appears there's tension through the supination.

To my knowledge....I don't know of one other out there that does.

But....

The cabling looks to be rigged at 50% or less.  I did a basic "once over" but the ratio's looked reduced.  Not saying thats good or bad....especially with a small muscle group you want smaller increments in adjustments, but you're claiming it to be higher.

Second.....

All of those freeweight machines aint worth a piss if you don't have enough weight.  You built them (for some odd reason) to accept Std 1" dia. plates especially when during that time everything was being built with 2" Intl.  Looks like you have a bunch of 50's, but when you're training legs....you got no damn 100's.  In another words....aint worth a piss.  Unless you got a ton or so 100's with 1" dia laying around...but talk about a needle in a haystack.

When I get time, I'll examine more in detail some of your designs.  Some looked 'interesting' but others look dumb as hell.  You have some design flaws & some of your 'inventions' look downright unsafe.

It is always refreshing to hear the opinion of a true expert in bodybuilding and engineering. Thanks for the criticism.

There are no 1" plates in my gym. Most have 1 1/8 inch holes. We have plenty of Olympic plates, too.

The biceps supinator has two weight stacks. The small stack has 5.5 pound plates and the big stack has 20 pound plates. There is enough for anyone so far.

So that piece of shit leg apparatus has 1" plate holders for 1 1/8" plates......

Most of my plates have 29mm holes in the center and the weight holders are 1 1/8" I went with the York cast plates and we have about 100 X 20 kg plates and 110 X 10 kg plates.

My mate Harry Daniels in Vancouver. He was a simple but genuine guy. I always had time for Harry. Last time I saw him he said he was a member of all gyms. This shot was taken outside Doug Hepburn's place. I will see if I can find a photo of Doug.

Harry had big arms and was quite strong. He never competed or got in contest condition. I don't think he ever got married, either. He used to record music from the radio. He was at my farewell party in 1987 when I was in Vancouver. Now that is a pretty city.

Lots of people tried to help Arnold. Sometimes he listened and sometimes he didn't. Now, either I am right about posing or I know very little about that art. Arnold seemed like the proverbial musclebound guy when he arrived at Golds and Vince's Gyms in October 1968. I arrived there during the same week Arnold did. Arnold posed for photos and he let me measure his biceps and around the shoulders. He said to come back in a couple of weeks before I could measure his calves. Arms were 21 1/2 and about 62 around the shoulders. He was quite approachable and always seemed to be the center of attention. He did his own thing in those days and had a lot of fun.

When he was at my penthouse in Manly in 1974 after giving posing displays and seminars at my gym and Tony's Gym we talked about bodybuilding, acting and other things. I told him he would never make it in the movies because even the great Steve Reeves didn't do that well and Steve was a hero because of his Hercules successes. Arnold literally thanked me because he said that makes him try harder. Who would have believed the success ahead for Arnold? They found the perfect vehicle for him. A role that was half man and half machine! That was believable and Arnold became a star.

I am still not happy that Arnold, who was the guest of honour, left the lounge room and was later found in a bedroom. There was no scandal because everyone bent over backwards to help Arnold.

Arnold shared a house with Paul Graham, Ken Moran and I think Bob Bruce in late 1968. This is what Ken Moran told me and Paul never denied it. Paul went to jail for exporting stolen cars to Australia. I was there in Honolulu when the FBI nabbed him. There was a cartoon in the Honolulu paper on the front page of "Mr Australia" lifting a car. Paul never won Mr Australia but came second. Ken Moran came to Vancouver with a red almost new Boss Mustang. Apparently he had to leave LA fast because he said he was in an accident for driving on the wrong side of the road. Amazing that he was rich enough to buy that car. Even though Paul spent over 2 years in jail in America he was allowed to be at Arnold's wedding years later. From what I read of the immigration laws that shouldn't have been possible for people convicted of crimes and deported from the USA. Paul is still the IFBB vice-president and no one can get rid of him in the Australian bodybuilding scene.

I had to be belittled by both Paul and Arnold in the 1975 Mr Australia contest. I protested at the judges meeting that Roger Walker had already won and someone else should have a chance like they did in the Mr America contest. No one supported me at the meeting. Roger won and I was put last. Paul gave me 25 points out of 100 and Arnold also put me last. Do you think I admire what Arnold and Paul did that day? They thought it was funny. I was blamed for booing at Robert Nailon the week before when many felt Hans Myer should have won the Mr NSW. I heard they were going to get even with me in Melbourne. I warned Frank Burwash that Paul was going to put me down. He did nothing and let it happen. I have a letter from Frank confirming what Paul and Arnold did. I was a fool to enter that show. It turned out to be my last contest because I tore a biceps a few years later.

Fast forward another 5 years and there is Arnold winning the Mr Olympia with mate Brendan Ryan, a junior competitor, judging while Peter McCarthy, many times Mr Australia, had to be the alternate judge because he mysteriously missed the judges meeting. Peter was there but didn't know the meeting was taking place. He got there late so wasn't allowed to judge. What a travesty. Arnold might have been the best bodybuilder on stage but there were irregularities in the judging process. I have all the score sheets somewhere so will write another story about that contest. No magazine would publish my story and I gave my copy to Mike Mentzer. I doubt it still exists.

I am writing these comments under my own name. Do you think those guys would do nothing if what I said wasn't true? They fixed the contest so that I would place last. That is a fact. Can anyone think of more despicable behaviour for a Mr Olympia than fixing a contest while he is judging? There was Arnold in Pumping Iron giving 'bad advices' to that hapless youth who was told to scream while he posed. Yeah, Arnold was a card. He knew he was going to win in 1975 in Pretoria. Do you honestly believe they would have allowed Serge Nubret to win that contest in a country ruled by apartheid? They wouldn't and they didn't.

Arnold is a good talker. I give him credit for being able to handle himself in crowds. He is motivated to a degree that few ascend to. How the hell did a big Austrian musclehead become reelected governor of California? The movie star feat was amazing enough.

Great story!

Are you serious Monsta?  Vince would be a liability to this publication.

Monsta, do you want this magazine to fail?  By recommending Vince, you would guarantee this!

The guy is self deluded.  His writing style lacks creativity and flair.

Dont stroke Vince's ego.  You should know by now that a lot Vince's stories are just manufactured heresay!

Hey, Hank, the reason I piss so many people off is because I have a good memory and I recount all those embarrassing details that most want us to forget. I don't post lies nor do I speak untruths. I post my recollection of events and I never fabricate reality. Integrity and honesty go hand in hand. On Getbig it is quite reckless and almost suicidal to always tell the truth!

Yes, you do cop it from every side Vince.  I know i have grilled you from time to time.

Vince, just keep on doing what you are doing!  I find you entertaining most of the time!

Vince, with all due respect the reason Arnold didn't want any advice was because too many people were giving it to him.  Fact is everyone was hanging on his coattails and was trying to get into Arnold's circle of real friends (not you) so they could get some fame in claiming that they were responsible for his success.

Arnold had already won the Mr Universe and had Joe Weider, Frank Zane, Jersop Wilcoz, and of course his buddy Franco Columbo.

Truth be told, you're not even a footnote in bodybuilding history.  You are trying to get fame off Arnold's hard work and others.  To be, you are just a vulture.

You can call me a phony but at least I don't pretend I'm someone I'm not and I don't take credit for other people's work.  Cut out this talk about Arnold being a big oaf.  If he was dumb, then he would have never made so much money in his lifetime or even became Governer of California.

Again Basile, cut out the bull.  You are just a nobody.  Your greatest achievement was a lousy Mr Canada title.  While you won that, Arnold won the Mr Olympia.  Who are you to give him advice???

Nobody, that's who

Bro...I hate to burst your bubble...but these "unique" machines you have "invented" have been around for YEARS.

Your leg extension, bicep curl, assisted chin/dip, etc.....are in just about every gym I've ever trained in, for many years now.

I'm sure your machines work just fine, but please...stop the "re-inventing the wheel, spiel".

bob you are an idiot.

Vince is describing mechanically subtle variations of machines that were designed to replicate older style free weight movements without considering the ability to make changes that only a machine can afford due to it not being constrained to just work in a plane acted upon by gravity.

but you wouldnt get this because you dont understand mechanics...which is why you posted that stupid dumbbell to Vince's first post...

FUNDAMENTAL to effective training and use of the body's energy reserves (which are finite) is to be able to apply intensity that is directly applied to the energy you have. If half of the exercise energy is wasted working through sub-optimal force vectors then you are robbing yourself of that precious reserve you have.

There is alot of merit in what Vince write about his machines but dumb-asses like yourself just cant grasp it as steroids have always allowed you to grow just by combing your hair- or applying your hair piece.

some people- the majority in fact, need to be smart about training. Having a seat below a pivot point is a great idea...however with respect Vince- a CAM arrangement is even better as it allows the user to move through points of weak mechanical leverage...im sure you'll agree.

To thos who dont ahve a clue about what im writing-thats fine...but if you insist on being a jerk about it just because you are blissfully ignorant then expect to look like a fool like Chic does here day in day out.

1991 Hack squat/calf machine. This is a $20,000 machine and is probably the highest quality machine ever installed in a gym. I took over 120 hours to design it. I changed the angle a couple of years ago and extended the length, too. Lots of polished stainless steel on the machine.

Hi again Mr inventor, how can you claim this is worth $20,000. More like $2000. Here are a couple of shots of my hack squat, you can adjust it from 40 - 70 degrees. It is all adjustable and if yours is the highest quality machine ever installed in a gym then this, is just amazing. It cost $8000. So it makes you look like not only a great inventor but also a great investor. You must think everyone here is stupid.

Thanks JWB, it has always been a big hit with the pros when they have trained here, at 70 degrees it makes you want to chuck.

Sometimes I make people do 2 sets at 70, 2 at 65, 2 at 60, 2 at 55, 2 at 50, 2 at 45 and 2 at 40. It is annoying to keep adjusting it but usually makes people vomit which is always good for a laugh in the morning.

terilli or mitsos told me that years ago... can't remember which one though.

i'm pretty sure vince had stuff out before sports kinetics was on the scene.

he definitely supplied a gym in surry hills (can't remember the name) with stuff he made in 1984 or 85 because it all had date of manufacture on the frames.

it was VERY heavy duty stuff... the frames were only 50mm x 50mm RHS but they were at least 4-5mm thick tubing because the benches were heavy to move around.

all the stacks had linear bearings which made them very smooth.

having said that I didn't agree with the angles on a few things...

I don't think vince is saying the raw materials for that machine cost $20K but that the COMBINED cost of materials, his labor (whatever he values that at per hour) during design and making of, his consumables (welding products, cutting wheels etc), the rent on his workshop etc.

At least I hope that is what he means for his sake because $20k is a lot of cash for some steel!

I think he charged himself $2000 alone for the photo shoot of the equipment

Hi again Mr inventor, how can you claim this is worth $20,000. More like $2000. Here are a couple of shots of my hack squat, you can adjust it from 40 - 70 degrees. It is all adjustable and if yours is the highest quality machine ever installed in a gym then this, is just amazing. It cost $8000. So it makes you look like not only a great inventor but also a great investor. You must think everyone here is stupid.

i wouldnt pay more than 200 bucks for this, and id paint it with a spray, to make it all new and shiny. it looks like shit.

Why I should have to justify statements made here is a mystery.

Mick Curren supplied that adjustable Hack machine to Mick Chapman at Hotbodz in Miranda, Sydney. Mick Curren is a machinist and the quality of his equipment is excellent. He used ingenious mechanisms and his equipment should have cost way more than it did. People here might be surprised to learn that Mick visited Sydney after I called him in Melbourne. Well, he actually lives just outside of the city. He told me he had heard about me but until he actually met me he didn't believe I existed. He told me I had the reputation of a legend in the industry. That surprised me because I stopped making equipment for others after I installed equipment in the Fitness Network for Chris Lee. I previously outfitted Bob Landers gym in Southern Sydney. Mick Curren agreed that my equipment was better than his but I acknowledged his workmanship was superior to mine. We both came up with original ideas.

It is always nice to be flattered but I try to keep a level head. Mick Curren came to my gym and was amazed at all of my designs. By the time he ended his visit I think I convinced him to stop making machines so cheaply for 'showrooms' for some gym owners. What happened was he would build a machine for Hotbodz and sell it way under retail. Other orders were supposed to pay for that prototype. Mick quit making commercial equipment and concentrated on home gym equipment. He stayed at my place for the night and the next day drove his truck to my factory in Windsor to have a look at my setup. I ended up letting him take a spare welder I had plus a few other things. He promised to pay me over a thousand dollars after he got home. It took him a long time to pay me but he eventually did. Some gym owners in Sydney claimed Mick still owed them refunds or equipment. I smiled to myself because these very same gym owners wouldn't give me his phone number when I wanted to talk to him. Later they called me and I gave them Mick's number. I always pay my debts and don't like it when I hear others are slack. In Mick Curren's defense he was foolish to keep building expensive machines without making a good profit. Gym owners love to boast about how cheap they acquired their equipment for. Guys manufacturing equipment usually go broke in Australia or they give it away.

Most of the Sydney gym owners respect my equipment but would not pay what I asked for building it. I never published a price list so most of my stuff was custom made equipment. I never made a profit making equipment. Ask Mick Chapman about my equipment as he has one of the best equipped gyms in Australia.

spare me the details would ya vince

Muscle Works equipment is of the highest standard. Sometimes gym owners repaint equipment. I had some of mine powder coated but most of the time I sprayed mine with hammertone paint.

The cost of materials for my Hack machine was about $2,500 and that was back in 1991. Materials cost much more today. Most people here have no idea what it costs to manufacture equipment. Many gym owners get welders to make benches, etc., so they don't appreciate the trouble it takes to have a factory and design equipment. Like I said, most gym owners don't even get their hands dirty.

I have some things to build for my gym so I can't reply to everyone here. Why Ron allows jerks to try to destroy a good thread is one of the crap things about Getbig. As many know I never reply to some dickheads and they continue to try to embarrass me with crass and insulting posts. Those posts will stand out like excrement among the sensible posts. When these guys get ignored they resort to more nonsense. I guess it is their way of being smart. Good for them.

Try to embarrass you?

you're doing a fine job all by yourself dipshit

Now about Michael Gearon and Sports Kinetics. Michael visited my factory in Milperra to discuss gym equipment way back in about 1983. I did my best to discourage him from enterring this profession. He lived on a farm near Melbourne and had a barn where he could build equipment. He even used single phase motors on his machines! I told him he wouldn't survive in the industry because it was too hard for an Australian company to survive in such a small market. Years later Michael told me I was right and he should have listened to me. He now imports gym equipment into Australia.

I wasn't happy to hear that Gearon was telling people he worked with me in the past. When I confronted him about this claim he was embarrassed. One day he showed up in Sydney with a pec deck for me free of charge for using my designs for my Smith machine, for example, without permission. That was nice of Michael. I had to modify his design to my standard and do major surgery on a few of the mechanisms. I had to replace a few of his aluminium pulleys which were being destroyed by the wire rope.

Michael sold his designs some years ago to Magnum Gym equipment in Brisbane for a reported $25,000. He was lucky to get that much when he shut down his business. It wasn't long after he sold those designs that Magnum went out of business. Like I said it is very difficult to succeed in Australia in this small market.

Tony and others in Melbourne have never been informed much about the Sydney gym scene because the bodybuilding magazines have been published in Melbourne and the two cities have always ignored each other. They play different codes of football. Sydney has an Aussie Rules team called the Swans but Sydney supports Rugby League which is a form of rugby union with different tackle rules. I invite Tony to visit my gym and see my equipment for himself and then write here about what he thinks. To prejudge me without seeing my equipment is not being fair dinkum.

Thanks for explaining that Vince. I will drop in to see your gym later in the year. How long since you have been to Melbourne? If ever?

It's not that you should; it's that you can't help yourself.

Read any one of your "conversations" here to verify. You're what my dear great-granny used to call "a real fucking douchebag."

There was a training system recommended by some in York that I tried when I was there. It was doing static contractions with a barbell held against pins in a power rack. The idea is to train muscles M W and F then do the free weight movement on Saturday. You hold the weight in a different position each training day. One day 1/3 of the way up, another day 1/2 way up and the last 2/3 of the way up. You did 3 X 10 seconds holds with the maximum weight you can use to do the full 10 seconds. This was as close to time under tension that I have seen or done. I put on half an inch on my arms that week and on the Saturday surprised myself by doing a strict barbell curl with 175 pounds which was about my bodyweight then. I didn't have a power rack so abandoned that training method so I never did find out if it held more promise. This system sure increases strength.

I remember very well an article in Strength and Health on this very principle. I was concerned about loss of flexibility and muscles becoming too short/tight using isometrics, so didn't use this method.  That was one strong dude in the article tho. Shoulder pressed 390 using iso training.  Same guy you referred to maybe.

I kind of wish I'd discovered Flex before S&H, since Hoffman's emphasis was powerlifting. Injured myself over and over trying to get as strong as some in his mags...  Never had the frame for powerlifting.

Keep the stories coming. Great reads.

Thanks for the thread Vince...You looked good back in the day for sure...A few  questions--And im not trying to be funny

1. What was the homo to straight ratio back in your day in the business?  We have all heard that a large percentage were gay...Just how much money did you make in that sort of thing? Is it true you paid for your porsche that way? I don't mean any disrespect, I got a PM from someone stating that as fact..If its too personal, i certainly understand...

2. What was the heaviest hefer you and your buddy Roz doubled up on? Are we talking well over 500 pounds plus?

3. Do you have any photos of these heffies working out on your equipment? That would be a sight to see...

4.Why don't you give all your equipment a nice uniform color?

5. I notice you stated that you were almost kicked out of a gym for calling a guy fat...If that is true, do you feel so much remorse over it that its made you a chubby chaser to this day?  And if so, wouldn't just calling the guy and asking for his forgiveness be easier and much cheaper on the wallet?

6. What is the most you dropped on dinner on one of these plumpies?

7. Do you show these fatties pictures of what you used to be and how do they react?

8.  How long of a posing session do you do for these cows before banging them? Do they get pissed off that they want to be fcked like yesterday but you have to show them each pose and/or your actual posing routine of your canada victory?

9. When you hit a bicep pose for one of these pigs, have the words "I bet you have never seen anything this large" come out of your mouth?

10. So you make your own equipment---Is it safe to say that you have made yourself a bed that can hold a couple tons of weight for you and you fetish?

11. Who has banged the heaviest Rhino? You or Roz...

12. I notice that you know exactly how big every part of your body was or is at any giving time.  I'm assuming that you are one of those gents that measure their own unit a couple times a week(who doesn't right) with that said, have you thought of altering the penis pump to make it better or have you made a machine to make the penis grow?...That may be something that actually could make some money..Just make sure it isn't pink like alot of your other equipment...I'd be the first one in line for one of these Vince(ok now you know something personal about me)

13. Lets say its a friday night about 11pm and most restruants are closed but you got one of those hippos on your jock looking to get railed but she needs a mid-night carb fix...my question to you is if you go to Micky D's down the road and hit up the dollar menu and give the cashier a c-note. Would it be enough money?  And if so, just how much change would you expect to get back?...Could a 600 tub of lard really pound down 50 plus cheese burgers?

14. Last question Vince...You like your women large for sure. But was their ever a time that you said to yourself " no fucking way im banging that"???And if so, just how large are we talking?

These are all serious questions Vince....Although i know some are personal, you kind of opened the door to ask personal questions? I always thought the guys who were true chumby chasers were very skinny black crack head types...I was wrong for sure

Keep the photos coming Vince...And don't sweat Chick...He is a historian of anything bodybuilding and he probably loves the photos also...But Chick is a funny bastard for sure...
