Title: COLLEGIATE NATIONALS OR BUST!!!

I couldn't find the training logs so i guess the mods can move this thread to the appropriate board. I’m going to keep a fairly detailed log this year of my progress but I’ll probably only be posting pics once every 6 months or so or whenever i see obvious improvement. I guess I might as well cover this from the beginning and try to cover 3 years of history in one post. I started training when i graduated from high school and went from 140 to 220 in my freshman year of college. Then I met Adonis and a bodybuilder at the university gym who took me under there wing and convinced me to cut all the way down. By the end of it all I was 155 skinny fat. I did my first show in 07 and came in at 146 as a light weight and placed 2nd. This year, even though I wasn't as lean as i should have been, I was 20 pounds heavier at weigh ins and placed 2nd in novice middle weight out of a class of about 12 people and then i placed 5th in open in a class of similar size. Chad hasn't posted the score card on mayhem yet but I will post it here whenever he gets around to it. Next year I hope to be a light heavy and I will try to get up to 190-210 this offseason. These are the progress pics from the past 3 years and some from today. I will keep a rough update of my lifts and diet in this thread. I plan to eat around 4000 calories every day and I want to try to stay fairly lean this offseason. Last year I didn’t put much effort into my offseason and I think it was kind of a mistake because I spent about 8 of my 12 dieting weeks trying to put on as much size as possible. I crammed in too much in too short of a period of time.  I was clearly leaner on stage last year. This year I would like to attempt collegiate nationals since it is my last year of college. Hopefully I can get all the funds necessary to give it a try. It would help me get my face out there. Anyway here are the pictures. These pics were taken today. I think its a fairly good improvement over my previous 180 from june. I look a little harder and more filled out. I still have some tanner that hasn't washed off yet. I now weigh anywhere from 182-188.

Right now my lifts are just getting back to where i was prior to the show. The last pic of my in the blue was me at 8 weeks out this year at 181. I think i am alot harder and leaner now then i was then. That would only 10 weeks ago.

Right now my lifts are as follows:

Bench: 270 x 4 (Could have done more but my tendons were still dry)

Incline Bench: 240 x 6

Decline ": 250 x 6

Front Squat: 275 x 5

BB Rows: 260 x 6

Those are just a few... haven't really gotten around to the rest. I will update this whenever significant progress is made. It's just here as a record. Whenever the DVD of the show comes in i might post my clips and additional pictures.

One more random pic from the show. I will try to get better ones soon. Right now im trying to lift twice a day if i have time but im pretty busy this year. Im working 15 hours a week and taking 15 hours of classes. I get up at 5 am every day to lift and eat. By the time 12 rolls around im ready to fall asleep.

I wanted to do em in college....won the Collegiate Illinois in College and that is where I stopped.

I have had it since i was 13. Getbigs eagerness to cry drugs is humerous. I had it when i was 146 lbs. It goes away to an extent when i diet down lean but the lump is still there. It can get pretty bad in the offseason when i start to add fat.

Is it an actual lump or just puffiness? I have puffiness but no lump.

I think i might be at my best as a 198 lbs light heavy at 3% but thats a good 2-4 years off.

Hahahahahahhahah hey.. i said i was coming in softer this year. I knew i would only be a fragment of my former level of conditioning. Im getting more of an idea of what they judge the shows on now. I noticed how some of the more conditioned guys are placing lower and i think it could be because of proportion. The higher your bf the more proportioned you look. I think it is also important to mention that i don't have any pictures from the center audiences perspective except the tiny ones i posted in the other thread which were no good. I will post the good ones when i get the DVD but until then i guess ill transfer them over into this thread so people won't have to look for it. My trolling days are over for the most part joe, even though i sometimes have the desire to make comments in some of the threads, I try my best to resist.

The lighting at his show was amazing.... it's like the flourescent lighting i have at home aka kamali kitchen lighting.

Yep, lighting changes everything. Just compare Phil Heath at the Ironman, to Phil at the Arnold. Not taking anything away from Coach, just sayin.

It was the last National qualifier of the year so everyone and their mother was there. David won the over 40 (my class) and the dude who won the LtHvy in the open (the other class I was it) was actually a pro and was in the Night Of Champions when it was still around and a 5 time World Champion. I think someone said there were more competitors than in the Nationals, there was over 250.

One of my mates is only 18, 62kg over 3x bw deadlift, 1.6 b/w bench, 2x bw squat for reps, nearly chinsa nd dips 2xbw...he has puffy nipples. I think its co shis age he is still very yound and so so so lean.

I have had it since i was 13. Getbigs eagerness to cry drugs is humerous. I had it when i was 146 lbs. It goes away to an extent when i diet down lean but the lump is still there. It can get pretty bad in the offseason when i start to add fat.

It would be silly to measure.... i think in the fat pics my legs got up to 27 and then for my first show they were 22 and now they are like 24. Im no Heather Policky... she has great quads. 26 inches with with sweep.

These pics were taken today. I think its a fairly good improvement over my previous 180 from june. I look a little harder and more filled out. I still have some tanner that hasn't washed off yet. I now weigh anywhere from 182-188.

Bone structure and overall shape is reminiscent of a young Arnold.

OK... Today was a good day. I did legs today and split hams and quads into 2 work outs.

Squat 300 x 6

Front Squat 300 x 4

Thats a 25 pound gain on back squat and 10 on front. Im getting to the point where im starting to stall out and will have to go up by 5 pound increments from week to week now but back squat was so easy i might try 325 next time. My goal this year for legs is to basically break 400 pounds on squat. I think i might be able to get up to 350 fairly quickly. Id like to see my front squat at 350 for reps as well. Today i also did 255 x 8 on front squats with ease. Im getting stronger and it feels pretty good. I feel great and my weight is starting to up a little. When i went to the doctor yesterday i weighed 190 but i think im more or less a legitimate 182 or so. My calories are still at about 4-5k and im eating pretty much all clean and im not having a problem either. No force feeding! Its fantastic. I usually have a lean beef hamburger every day and then when i train big muscle groups ill eat a whole pizza. I also eat alot of cous cous, fish, and i get alot of egg whites. I find that drinking my eggwhites is alot easier then cooking them and eating them. They taste like milk so its great! More updates to come!!

Thanks. I think its important though to remember that i don't lift heavy to be strong or impress anyone but i lift heavy because that is what you have to do to get muscle growth and density. My form may not be perfect but i try. I go until my hams and calves touch. I notice the heavier i go the faster i go. It is kind of strange actually because i always thought it was reps and hypertrophy but whenever i did the high volume work outs i didn't get much out of them. I try to get in and out of the gym in 45 mins. Heavy weight, low sets, and low reps.

I usually just don't think about it and go into the gym and have fun. I change things up every now and then and sometimes i keep the same routine for months. Yesterday for legs i did

Front Squats: 4 sets of about 6-10 (counting the warm ups).
Squats: 3 sets of 6
Single leg legpress: 2 sets of 6
Leg extensions: 2 sets of 15 and then on the last set i did a drop set from 260 down to 135
Then i do all the girl hip and thigh abductor machines for 2 sets with the whole stack.

Today I'm going to do delts and i might be in there again to screw around if i have the energy. Ill probably do

DB shoulder press: 4 sets of 100 X 12 and then drop it down and as i go lighter turn them into Arnold presses. Our gym goes no higher than 100lb dbs so i have to improvise
Barbell shoulder press: 2 sets of 6
Side laterals: 2 sets of 12 and i usually do a drop on both sets
Then i usually go over to a machine and do negatives with the whole stack and work on exploding up. 5 reps with 5 sec negs, 3 reps with 3 set negs, then 5 quick reps.

This is just an example of the kind of stuff i do. I try to have fun when i go to the gym.

My protein right now is about 300-350 grams and i try to keep my fat under 70 grams a day, however, i do not keep track of it strictly. Everything i eat is lean and fat free so I'm getting trace amounts from my carb sources and lean meats. I only eat meat about twice a day as well because i don't think its healthy to eat a lot of it. Whey makes up for a lot of my protein sources as well as egg whites. I drink much of my calories so it is very easy to get a lot of calories.

What happened to change your mind on protein intake? Having read some of your posts in the past you were more along the lines of 1 gr/lb and now....

What happened to change your mind on protein intake? Having read some of your posts in the past you were more along the lines of 1 gr/lb and now....
Well the thing is I'm not even trying to get 300. It just happens. I eat a lot of grains and cereals and much of it comes from that. Besides if I'm not getting overall calories from fat and I'm trying to avoid it then a good bit is going to be split with protein. I think for someone like me 200-250 is fine. I'm gaining muscle so i need a little bit more now. As for new personal bests today i got 245 for 4 on shoulder press. I'm pretty excited. This is a 20 pound gain since I've been working out after the show. I am also repping the 100 pound db's for shoulder press like they are 40's or something. They feel incredibly light and i can short stroke them. Unfortunately i cannot go higher then 100 because that's the heaviest our DB's go up to.

My calories are still at about 4-5k and im eating pretty much all clean and im not having a problem either.

Tell me what you eat, im having problems getting the kcal very high without gainers.

Try this for breakfast. This will start you off with a good 1200 calorie breakfast. I don't do all of this anymore though because i was going up to 6000 cals which is more then i need.

Mix in a blender:
1 cup egg whites: 120
1 cup milk: 80
1 banana: 135
1 cup oats: 300
about 4oz vanilla yogurt: 110

Blend it all together and drink. That's 745 cals right there and about 50 grams of protein. Eat that with 2 bagels which typically run about 250 cals each and you got about a 1200 cal breakfast. It is not very filling and a guarantee you within 2 hours you will be hungry again. A lot of people are squeamish about the egg whites but if you get egg beaters i swear it tastes the same as cream milk.

Usally a normal meal and another gainer but "only" 200kcal within the hour and 30g of protein added to that...

This depends. If i feel like i am strong enough to where i can dominate a weight set i will short stroke it meaning i do half motion from chest to above my head. I short stroke 205. If the weight is too heavy ill usually do full range of motion. With 245 thought i go just below the chin and then all the way up. Shoulders are the only lift i do that when i go heavy i don't go all the way down and up. So with 245 i go just below my chin and then explode up.

For those interested in another meal, before i got train in the mornings i will mix a half cup of egg whites with a half cup of milk and 4oz vanilla yogurt with chocolate weigh. It taste exactly like a creamy chocolate milk shake and is about 400 calories with 40 grams of protein. While i work out i also drink another shake that is 3 table spoons of gatorade and 2 scoops weigh. This is 370 calories. Then i eat the breakfast that i posted above. By the time 9AM rolls around i have consumed 2000 calories. It isn't very difficult at all. Usually in the evening ill have a box of cous cous which is about 1400 calories and ill have some random meats throughout the day. I also make a hamburger a day so this is about 3400 and then with the hamburger about 3700. Then i usually load up on fiber cereal till im at about 4500 cals or so.

Well i remember a time when i would have to force feed on 3000 calories and id be puking some of it up. This is the first time this has happened. It is actually pretty strange. Im sure a lot of it will become fat and ill have to slow down here before long but i want to get to 200 first. If it still looks solid ill continue to eat like this. On a day where i work out twice i can easily consume 6000 calories. Ill usually add some pizzas there between meals but im too exhausted from school usually to try that.

Alright guys. New updates. It is pretty crazy how fast my strength is going up. Earlier this week when i did delts i got 250 for 4 struggling on barbell shoulder press and today i got 255 for 4 reps fairly easy. My chest however had a ping the other day. I tried to work out at 6 am and i guess i didn't get enough water before training or something but i kind of hurt my shoulder. My flat bench press was really weak and i only got 255 for 6. I guess it was just a bad day but i came back and did incline bench at 250 pounds for 6 reps. After i did decline i had to cut the work out short because of the pain and i thought id play it smart and let it heal up. I will try to attempt a chest day later on in the week. Clearly if i am doing 255 on shoulder press i should be fine for chest but its still a little achy. I think it is because i have neglected to train my rear delts and my front and side delts are over powering it. School has been getting really tough lately and im having trouble keeping up. I have to play catch up on the weekends. I am currently weighing about 185ish - 190 in the mornings at school. At home im about 183-4. No idea how much i weigh but all i know is im getting bigger and stronger. Ill try to take pics here soon in a few weeks and if there is a noticeable change ill post them. Train hard!

Yes. The real changes should come at the dawn of the new year around February. Im kind of cooling off now. Hurt my shoulder a little and want to take a month break  ;)

Yeah sure  ::). This is kind of what i aspire to look like. I want to look like this when im 27-29 like Wolfe. I remember when there was a time when i wanted to look like Arnold. With bodybuilders like Wolfe i finally have more motivation; Something that's closer to me as opposed to something 30-40 years ago.

Leafy i feel that you can get the Zane look or even a jeff King look (Imho is ideal , minus the neck part) , but to achieve the Dennis Wolf look there is only one road to that venue, and its teh Heavy-gear highway, Route Juice, Roid Road...in my estimation, not worth it , but thats me ...maybe that is what happiness is to you then do it, but dont half ass it, go all the way..regardless, Leafy is a getbig legend hands down...

Update. State show dvd just came in. Ill try to see if i can't get some clips posted... I took these pics from the tv. I was actually very surprised how good i looked. I just assumed i looked like shit but i was very pleased. If i can replicate the 15+ pounds i put on this year then i think next year will be insane. My conditioning however was awful. Sorry for the bad quality pictures. Still lifting heavy and hard and getting stronger. Ill update my lifts around december. There should be a drastic change in the weight im lifting.

Thanks guys. Today i had a phenomenal bench day. I got 310 on bench like a piece of cake and then i attempted 325 but failed. I resisted it down but it dropped a little to fast for comfort so im probably maxing about 315 right now. My incline dropped a little though. I am usually pounding out 265 for reps but i only got 1 today and dropped to 255 for 4. My decline is still going up pretty good. I got 270 for 4 reps and am taking it up to 275. I also inclined flied the 90 pound dumbells today for 6 reps no problem. We are gaining strength so fast its getting pretty ridiculous.

As for legs i front squatted 305 for 6 reps yesterday which is pretty wild because last week i could barely get 2. I then attempted back squat with 350 and only got 1 but it was butt to heels.

As for back im now barbell rowing 275 for reps with decent form. I got some new wrist straps called Grizzly Paws and they are about the best piece of workout equipment i have ever used. Me and my friend added about 50 pounds on to all our back lifts in one day. I mean the weight feels like it is actually attached to the bone and no form arm or bicep is required.

My weight is remaining steady at about 180 or so but i know i need to get to 210 here before long. Anyway just thought id drop an update while things were getting crazy.

Update: Nothing real big in strength news. Today we were doing barbell rows and i repped out 285 for a decent 6 easy reps. I then challenged my work out partner who is massive to attempt 315. I decided i would get a little bold and try it myself. I got a good 4 sloppy reps. I really don't care to much about form. The important thing is im feeling new weight. When i finished the set my wrist straps broke and im pretty pissed about that so im going to have to go buy some new ones (god im such a badass  ::) ;D) I thought we were going to have a shitty work out after they broke because i couldn't grip the barbell in my hands when we were doing shoulder shrugs with 315. The damn thing keeps rolling out of my hand but we moved on to cable rows and did the whole stack for reps (310 for 4).

As for legs, my knee is starting to act up a bit so i have to be careful. I get a sharp pain in my knee on the outer portion of the knee cap when i start to do heavy sets but not enough to make me stop doing it. I have gone up to 315 for front squats and got a good 4 reps and i had to drop my back squat down 10 pounds but im repping 340 for 4 which is better then 350 for 1.

My bench gains are starting to slow and im getting worried. I am going to attempt 285 for 4 this week and we will see how it goes. My incline bench is plateauing at 265 and the most i can get with it is 3 struggling reps. Decline bench is still going good and i will be attempting 285 for 4 as well.

I went and got my body fat tested at my gym on a 7 point pinch test and came out at 6% which is total BS. Judging from the shots below i'd say im more in the 10-12 range but i still have striations in my quads (i know they don't show in the picture  ::)). Im looking pretty pudgy here  :-\ but ill be leaning up and hardening up here in about 6 weeks  ;D. My quads are still pretty hard and vascular. Hopefully they stay that way. I think its pretty clear that they have put on mass since the last pictures i have taken. They are getting close to being about 25 inches around. My goal is to get them up to about 26 and have them stay that way when i lean all the way down so they will be fairly proportionate with my waist. These pics were taken after about 3 weeks straight of eating cheesecake everyday. Some days i'd eat a whole one in one day and get about 300 grams of fat. I was surprised i was getting away with it as long as i was. Anyway the goal for this year is to bring up my whole back side. I need more back width and ham hang so i have been doing a lot of straight leg dead lifts.

whats so unsafe about free-weight squats?  ??? Don't u have access to a power/squat rack? I've read in some places that squatting in the smith is actually more dangerous than free-weight squatting as it puts greater pressure in the knees... something about the knee being in a less stable position.

Yes i have heard this too. For hamstrings i just straight leg deads with 405 just below the knee. Then i do lighter weight standing up on a bench with about 225-50 touching my toes and coming up just below the knee. Seated and standing ham curls, and sometimes lunges. I tried good mornings the other day and didn't like those. The reason why i do smith squats is because when you have 350 pounds on free weight and you make one wrong move its compounded by the weight (not like i could do 350 free weight anyways). It keeps me in a nice path and i don't have to have a good spotter. If i crash i just roll the bar forward.

Check your outer knee pain. Might be early patello-femoral tendonitis. You have pretty strong lateralis development relative to your medialis. I'll bet ten-to-one your patella is tracking laterally, due to an over-exuberant pull by the vastus lateralis.

Your solution: more terminal knee extensions. More glute work. More hip flexor and quad stretches. Foam roller work on your IT bands. Lay off the leg presses and leg extensions. Keep up the work on the front squats though -- that's probably helping you a lot. Try more lunges, and bulgarian split squats.

I could be wrong, so get a second opinion. But do it fast. You do not want to wake up one morning with full blown patello-femoral syndrome. It's a bitch and takes months to rehab.

Thanks man, that's actually solid information. I have been doing a lot of abductor and IT band work actually. I was actually thinking maybe my warm ups weren't good enough and that i should try warming up on leg extension. I will defiantly try some of these things.

I actually looked that up and it showed some stretches that i had never even though of that would help prevent that kind of pain. I'll try them all later this week when i hit legs again.

well

to be safe when you do legs, you have to adjust your stance and toe positioning including distance between feet and how low you dip according to your bone structure ...

for example : I'm bowlegged and my legs also arch backwards when straight

So the best stance for me is quite open, with toes pointing at 2 ocklock ...

This way there's no unnatural twisting/scissoring forces on the ligaments/tendons and it uses my much stronger inner thingh ...



my bet is that Leafy bug is pushing himself too hard and doesn't take good care of his legs :

legs once a week

only squats for quads ...

streching WELL and PROPER after

massage  at least once a week ..

sea salt baths (hot )

castor oil wraps

I actually tried jamming elbow into my quads and running it down the length of the outer head of the quad. It will pass in time hopefully. Previously i was having a lot of shoulder pain from heavy benching and i felt like there was an imbalance in my delts. I started training rear delts pretty hard and the pain went away.

Don't agree necessarily with the "time off" reco. It depends. It's not an absolute for me. We differ. That's cool.

What's the benefit of a castor oil wrap? Never done it. I'm curious. What does it do?

Never said i had an injury. Read the thread. I said i have something that has potential to become an injury. The only people i mess with on this forum are the coach, chick, and arvilla and that's because i like to bust their balls. You on the other hand are a total disaster. I tried to give you an intervention but you keep spiraling deeper and deeper. How is the olive oil diet going and the painting job? I really do hope that works out for you. Just curious leafy whats the daily diet like?
     I have cleaned it up quite considerably because as you can see from the pictures i'm about to post i've put on quite a bit of fat. Typically i'd hide the fat pics but i think this is something everyone needs to see. Im up to about 185-190 now. My progress has tapered and im not having the explosive strength gains i used to. I don't know whats happening really. Adonis thinks i have put on some muscle but im not sure. I have added about an inch on to my leg but i don't know if it's fat or muscle. I think my hamstrings and traps have come up a bit but that is about all. I got my knee problem fixed from the smith press squats. I found out it was because i was coming up on my toes which put all the pressure on the tendons in my knee. Now i push from my heels and i feel it alot my in my hips.
     Right now i'm just eating whole grain breads, cereals, milk, oats, yogurt, raw eggwhites, buffalo meat, peanut butter and healthy nuts, cous cous, tuna, a daily poptart, and i have a pizza about once a week. On top of this i get my special work out shake  ;). My calories are at about 4000-4200. Before i would pretty much just worry about getting my 220 grams of protein and the rest of my calories were cheese cake and pizza. I got pretty sick of eating like that anyway.
     My chest has been getting a lot tighter lately so i have backed off on the heavy benching. It feels like 2 pulleys steadily tightening the muscle every time i hit chest so i just dropped the weight about 25 pounds and try to rep more. I would like to get one of those deep tissue massages to see if that would help. I just try to stretch it a lot. I can't stand it when they feel tight. I haven't had anything else seriously slowing me down though.... yet (knock on wood). Me and my work out partner just started doing leg press again. We are up to about 1025 pounds on it for 8-12 reps. My back squat has gone from 350 for a few struggling reps to 375 for 4. The thing that worries me most is the possible damage i could be doing to my heart. When i lift its hard for me to breath and my face gets really red. My front squat has plateaued completely and the most i ever did i think was 325 for 3. I have actually had to drop the weight on that back down to 305. I think my feet are positioned wrong so it is actually harder. I'll try to work on that in the next few weeks.

Here are the pics and a few shopped side by side so you can see the difference over time. It has only been about 3 months since the show. Some of these pics are in comparison with my 1 week out shots and the others are comparisons from the last time i posted pictures.
