seems like include dumbells give you much more of a contration and stretch and seems like a better overall mass builder than the smith machine. Jay seems to love the incline DB and has a decent chest, etc.
just curious as to what makes the incline smith the best as opposed to other exercises?
-
When I do incline smith, my chest and shoulders look much more pumped for the rest of the day than if I do dumb bell presses. Maybe is helps to isolate more?
-
Safer. Much less risk of injury.

thats all?

DB must offer a greater range of motion and isolate each arm for symmetric developement. On paper DB should be better.

oh brother

I like them both.
Here`s my tip of the day for added upper pec growth:
When doing Smith Inclines,do a full rep, followed by a half rep...........this counts as one rep.
Try a 4-5 sets of 6-12 reps,on a 20-30 degree incline,no higher,and thank me later! 8)

Top...........sorry `bout that! :)

On the smith? I think there's more risk of injury on that stupid thing than most machines in the gym.

it's all about the drugs and use any exercise that you feel working the most (for resistance) and that's the whole secret of bodybuilding ..

that may be true, but i am drug free at the moment and want to improve my chest as much as possible, so i am looking for the most effective exercises.
i used to do a lot of flat benches, but in the past 4-5 months, i dropped the bench and have been doing a lot of dumbells. i used to do 6 reps, but i also dropped the weight and hit 10-12 reps, and feel like this has help a lot. its easy to drop the weight, but hard to drop the ego.

Disagree, causes too much stability in the shoulders plus if you get pinned you have no where to go. DB's allow more instability that in turn causes stability which makes stabilizers stronger to handle the load. Plus you can't get pinned, if you get in trouble....drop em'. DB press for chest, with a 1/4 turn at the top makes for a better contraction (in bodybuilding terms). Training on a machine makes you better............

This is precisely why training knowledge in bodybuilding is all but nil. Try to find the easy way out because real training is just to hard.

Oh really?
How much do you bench/squat/deadlift, Coach?

I did all that kind of training that you do with your athletes in highschool football. We used to go to Ole Miss in the summers and go to their training camps. I have done the 100 yard sprints in 100+ degree Louisiana heat with humidity that feels like you are inhaling water. During this time i was the smallest and weakest i had ever been. You gotta find what works for you. I'd pick a smith machine with safety over dragging a tire or jumping rope outside any day. That stuff is just a bunch of crap to me. It gets you conditioned well but why do more then you have to?

controlled movment with no risk of injury ,, be able to concentrate mainly on the pecs rather than trying to stable the bar,, the smith is just the superb tool to build superb pecs,, greats pecs are built as a result of genetic and of training smart,, ofcourse you need to go heavy with time,, but smith machine and hammer is the 2 most important factors when it come to exercises,,

there is no need for free weight to build great chest,, this is one of the secrets we dont tell you ,, jason myself many others we use machines and smith and hammers!! to get to the level of pec development we achieved,, again this is one of the myths you hear about free weights and dumbells for chest,, BIG NO NO ,, you build big chest from stimulating it with right training not ego training,, and ofcourse heavier weight the better but! you need to do it right and get the stiulation ,, free weight doesnt achieve that to full capacity

if you also watch jay's favorite chest exercise if the incline hammer.. that is his main exercise.. for athletics i agree that free weights are best.. for bodybuilding free weights do have certain limitations.. i have yet to get as good a chest workout using free weights as i have using hammer strength machines properly.. (proper seat height ect as opposed to just trying to lift as much as possible and adjusting the seat to that advantage) i have lifted for 20 years.. and wish hammer and some of the other leverage lines were in existance 20 years or more a go in my area.. would be ahead of the game i am at now..

One of the biggest problems with HS football is that a coach, be it, O-line, D-line, head coach, etc is usually the strength and conditioning coach. HS's usually do not use a strength and conditioning coach for the sole purpose of creating strength and conditioning programs because it's usually not in the budget or stipen. But the HS coaches are not strength and conditioning coaches but they try to do the best they can with what they have.

It's not a secret.....sorry.

Hammer Strength machines are definitely the best for chest development. I don't like the Smith's straight up and down motion and the angled one's feel even worse.

I get angry when i think of my highschool coaches because they are probably the least credible people to rely on in terms of exercise. Bunch of fat bald old men yelling at you. My defensive back coach was a GOOD coach and actually had a big influence on me moving into bodybuilding. Nothing was ever good enough for the guy. You could pick the ball off and lay out everyone on the field and run into the endzone with it and he would ask you why you didn't do it faster. He really destroyed some egos.

My HS track coach had the sprinters doing pyramids (100,200,400, etc) instead of sprint a strength work...he looked at me funny when I wanted to go squat and strengthen my quads and hams.

Free weights, smiths, hammers and even machines, all good but I'll have to agree with Mr. 15 on this one, you don't need a lot free weights for a big chest. IMO, best chest exercise is Incline Smith Machine Press. As for free weights my favorite chest exercise is DB Incline Fly.
-
great thread!
-
We have hammer strength equipment. I use the incline hammer press sometimes, I never feel like I'm really isolating my pecs. I feel it more in my shoulders. Wonder what I'm doing wrong ???
-
Would choose hammer strength over a smith (injury machine) machine anyday.
-
yes hammer is my favorite,, i loaded 6-7 plates each side and did good 10s with good form in the past and that developed my pecs the best out of any exercise

hammer incline ofcourse,, everything is in the incline with pecs ,, you want the incline

so what is it? incline hammer or incline smith?
-
As much as I'm against machines, I will use a hammer strength for some upper bodywork. Even thought the hammer stabilizes too much, its the only machine I've used that takes the stress off my shoulder with more emphasis on the triceps.

I realize this is a post from a bit back but was curious as to where most people position the handles in relation to your chest. Do you start with it lined up with the middle of your chest or line it up with the upper chest or even higher towards the clavicle?
Would help if a vid could be posted. I am always a bit confused as to where to place the handles, etc.

Nothing builds muscle like the BASICS. And BASICS=FREE WEIGHTS.
You'd never see Haney going through a chest or back workout without barbells and dumbbells. That's back when bodybuilders trained like men...MEN!!! None of this f@ggoty smith-machine bench press, Hammer Strength shit. You taxed the muscle by lifting the cold steel in your hands up and down. Four to eight repetitions. That's how MEN trained...and the proof was always in the density of the physiques.
-
some kind of incline should always be included at least every couple workouts in order to have a balanced chest but building the core of your chest workout around an incline movement(s) is dumb. the incline position, while an effective way to stimulate the upper region of the pecs, moves a large percentage of the load into the front delts as compared to the flat or decline positions. the smart trainer would focus on a decline movement, as its the alignment which places the greatest emphasis on the pecs, the least on the shoulders. hammer declines are superb.

VERY much this.
On topic, are decline db flyes the ultimate pec builder? I am considering, next chest workout, doing them followed by decline barbell presses, possibly on smith machine not sure yet. I dislike decline db presses for some reason.
With the flyes are you a fan of cable flyes?

i dont do much flys though they are valuable for "shaping" and getting the inner pecs. i think cable crossovers are the best for this.

Interesting. If you examine the function of the pectoralis major, the motion is more of an arc with your upper arm crossing the lower portion of your sternum. I do believe flyes will offer a more natural movement correct? Any kind of press seems very limiting in terms of ROM, though you can move more weight...Makes sense to pre-exhaust with high rep db flyes then hit the heavy decline press...I shall try this and report back.

i dont like pre exaust
flys may allow for more natural plane of movement but i personally cant get enough stimulation out of thm to warrant much growth.
i will use them sometimes after my main exercise, just one or two sets, to stimulate the inner region of the pecs which often need just a little more work after a press. either that or an incline.

Decline bb with free weight bar or smith machine?

machine workout oh brother ::) When u go back to DBs u'll see how weak you are when u train for real. WHAT A BEAST :D
Nothing wrong with smith-machine or hammerstrength etc but to base the workout on them and skip the DB presses is taking the easy way out.
Incline smith machine is a great 2nd exercise and superior to hammer-incline machine.

Disagree, causes too much stability in the shoulders..
Yes! The smith machine forces your joints to follow its trajectory and increases the risk of long-term joint injuries. Dumbells is the best equipment there is for avoiding injury, since you can move in a natural trajectory for your joints and ligaments. There is scientific evidence to support this.
However, there is also a publication indexed in Pubmed that shows that dumbells and barbells are the main cause of admission to the ER. Why? Well people tend to drop them on their feet and other bodyparts, crushing themselves ;-/.

Ever heard about all or nothing principle? You cannot isolate some part of muscle cell, either you fire it or you don't. That's it.
Problem with chest is that many people got structure making it impossible to feel any chest burn doing typical exercises such as db press, bb press. Smith machine allows me to focus on my pecs.

hmm..why not alternate every week
1 week do incline smith and the next week do include DB...

Nothin wrong with Smith machines or Hammer equip. All this "it's either free weights or you ain't trainin" stuff is nonsense. In some cases I prefer free weights over machines and vice versa. For chest I'll use Hammer incline, Smith flat, db inclines, db flies, pec deck, etc..... Now, if all you have is a bar and a bench you can make your chest grow, but you don't have to restrict yourself though. Just cause they didn't have this equipment in the "Arnold era" doens't mean they wouldn't have used it if it was. Those guys would've used every piece of equipment and every chemical in existance if it were available to them.
