Just read this one another forum:
"Joe Weider is on life support, been in a coma for a week or so. Eddie Giuliani said a week, Lou Ferrigno said a month, not sure how long it's been! Bet a week is more like it, seems like this news would get out."
-
he wont recover
-
I thought he was dead so I guess a coma is a step up.

Regardless of the whole "Weider Principles" thing, you can't deny that bodybuilding wouldn't be where it is without he and Ben.

Yes, they were the first schmoes of our "sport"...They started the revolution.

Im not so sure about that . Bodybuilding was something that has been growing at a steady rate for a hundred years . In fact they may have hindered it by the promotion of freak shows .

Actually, I was lifting in my living room. Since the magazines talked about training to failure and I trained alone, I'd put 80 lb on the car and screw on the collars. Then, I'd put the extra cement weights outside the collars.
I'd bench to failure then dump the weight off, leaving just an 80-lb loaded barbell to press back to the uprights.
Of course, since I lived upstairs, the neighbors complained. Then, I simply took the cushions off my mom's couch and surrounded the bench with them.

LOL the 15in long threaded curl bar , man i would just load the bar up with all the weight i could just to avoid having to keep spinning that stupid collar

Get well Joe.

I had those for my dumbbells, but not for the barbell. I had to use an adjustable wrench.
As for the cement weights, I had the Orbatron ones in kilograms and some other ones (whose name escapes me at the moments) in lbs.
-
Get well Joe.
I was wondering why Muscle & Fitness and FLEX had tributes to him. I thought he was actually dead like Robert Kennedy of MuscleMag, last September.

Get well Joe the Schmoe.
On a serious note, I wish him well - just the name Wieder brings back fond memories of my first wieder weight gain powder and cement filled weights!

My first experience with Weider was back in the early 80's with their milk & egg protein powders. You'd dump a scoop of the protein in a glass of juice or milk, stir the fuck out of it, and "poof" the powder would float back up to the top. The shit just wouldn't mix properly. There was no shaker cups or hand blenders back in those days. Our family didn't even have a regular blender at the time, so I would spend 15 minutes just trying to blend the damn protein shake so I could drink the horrid thing.

My first supplement was Weider's Dynamic Weight Gainer back in '88 or '89. My best friend's stepfather was using it. But, he didn't like it. So, he gave it away.
It tasted weird, not disgusting, just weird.

Hahahah yes! I remember that powder, I got it down to a tee by using a fork and adding the powder first and adding warm water little by little until I beat it into a smooth paste (no homo) then i'd add cold water and couple of ice cubes ;D Still tasted like egg powder though :-X

LMFAO! True Story

Everything was "Weider" when i first started lifting (supplements/magazines/IFBB and NPC/books/courses) Joe had a monopoly on bodybuilding (and i always wondered what would happen when/if he dies) He truly is (like him or hate him) "the father of bodybuilding"....

Bodybuilding as we know it would not have existed without him! Get well Joe! You lived a schmoe life!

I believe that pic came from the following video:

Isn't there a way to give him a fix of liquified thong through his IV to wake him up?
lmao
:D

Joe is 93. He can't live forever. When he goes, his life should be celebrated. I'm glad I got to meet him. Our lives would be much different (those that lift, juice, diet) had it not had been for him. Do we agree with everything he's done? No. But he's done alot more good than bad, and for that he should be remembered.
-

This makes no sense. Maybe if you said those who do this for a living, you would have a leg to stand on.

Dude lived a long life, sold a lot of magazines, sold a lot of gym equipment, and brought Arnold to the masses. And I willing to bet that the IFBB will change after he passes away.
His brother died a billionaire, I wonder where that money went, and did Jos and Ben have kids?

who knows, but Ben did have a book out on how Napoleon died, and had other vested interests.
It would be funny, if Joe says that upon his passing, that the winner (if he has over $1 billion of his own money) of HIS Mr. Olympia contest will receive 1 (or 2) million dollars. But, seriously doubt that will happened. And I don't think that he likes where bbing has gone.
I think he was also a real fan of Flex Wheeler's physique as well.

IFBB is non-profit?
I may be wrong but I think it is just the NPC that is non profit.

Its gonna start being a dominoe effect soon. Lots of greats are getting older. Sad to see eras end.

Haha yeah I remember that. It's like the rack was exactly where you wanted to grip plus the bar was so short it made it impossible to avoid adjusting the grip to avoid the pinch. That, the collared bars, useless leg extension that also pinched, thick cement weights or those shit collars you used on the smooth metal bars it seemed like my first mish mash weight set was just one major pain in the ass from top to bottom.

I didn't get pinched on my old bench. The uprights were so narrow that I had to worry about racing to the other side and catching the end of the bar, before it hit the ground.
Eventually, I got smart and just pulled the bar towards me on the side I was unloading first. That kept the bar balanced, so I could go to the other side and unload it.

Yeah I remember that "pulling over to load" part too. The bar was so light and rack so narrow that even loading a 25 pound weight improperly on one side could cause the whole bar to slingshot over.
I've seen those ones you are talking about though, they were less than shoulder width.

I remember 8.8 lb and 14.4 lb plates in the plastic/cement weight set. Also the plastic sleeve that you slid over the bar to act as the spacer between the plates.

Those were the Orbatron ones I mentioned earlier. I had a bunch of them (the 4 kg ones) and a few 5 kg (11 lb) ones, as well.
Of course, the worst part is when the plastic dry-rots and cracks. Then, you start benching and a chunk of cement falls in your eye.

The cement weights were just terrible. I am glad that once I started messing around with weights they were pretty much on their way out and then a couple years later it seemed like all you had to do was save up a hundred bucks and you could buy the 300lb olympic weight set with the bar at which point you were really up and running.

worst were dumbells you put plates on and then collars with the little pins that sometimes u had to tap with a small plate and then still u curl or press and one side completely fall of onto the floor,,,

Yeah those pins were worthless! Came out at 45 ish degree angle and were impossible to safely secure even with pliers because it just didn't grip well with the smooth end of the bar. A good set of hammer curls were a fantasy with those things.

arnold has posted an eulogy on facebook
Today, I lost a dear friend and mentor, and the world lost one its strongest advocates of living a healthy lifestyle. Joe Weider was a titan in the fitness industry and one of the kindest men I have ever met.
I knew about Joe Weider long before I met him - he was the godfather of fitness who told all of us to "Be Somebody with a Body." He taught us that through hard work and training we could all be champions. When I was a young boy in Austria, his muscle magazines provided me with the inspiration and the blueprint to push myself beyond my limits and imagine a much bigger future. I know that countless others around the world found motivation in the pages of his publications just as I did, but as I read his articles in Austria, I felt that he was speaking directly to me and I committed to move to America to make my vision of becoming the best bodybuilder, to live the American dream, and to become an actor a reality.
Joe didn’t just inspire my earliest dreams; he made them come true the day he invited me to move to America to pursue my bodybuilding career. I will never forget his generosity. One of Joe’s greatest qualities is that he wasn’t just generous with his money; he freely gave of his time and expertise and became a father figure for me. He advised me on my training, on my business ventures, and once, bizarrely, claimed I was a German Shakespearean actor to get me my first acting role in "Hercules in New York", even though I barely spoke English. As my career took off, he was always nearby, giving advice, promoting my movies or my crusade as the Chairman of the President's Council on Fitness in the pages of his magazines, and appearing at my fundraisers and events when I decided to run for Governor. He was there for me constantly throughout my life, and I will miss him dearly.
He leaves behind a fantastic legacy of a fitter world. Very few people can claim to have influenced as many lives as Joe did through his magazines, his supplements, his training equipment, and his big-hearted personality. Joe was known for urging everyone, “Exceed yourself,” and there is no question that throughout his life, he did just that.
My thoughts and prayers are with his extraordinary wife, the love of his life, Betty, and all of his family and friends.
-
shitty mags
Haven't opened a Flex in ages, but back before the Internet it was amazing. If you weren't in Santa Monica through Flex and it's smaller competitors you got all your information, all your Olympia coverage etc. No Internet, no forums.
Is it questionable to push Mega Mass 4000 etc. with a pic of Achim Albrecht or whoever? Surely, yes, although it's nothing more than everybody else does. That is the thing that I really dislike, Joe obviously knew the name of the game better than anyone.
-
Joe Weider WAS bodybuilding. May he rest in peace. :(

No, he got rich by taking his 7 dollars in savings to buy 600 postcards to send to people selling his magazine subscriptions for 75 cents for 6 bimonthy issues. Then he bought a typewriter with the subscription money and typed out the first issue at night on his mom's dining room table while he worked during the day as a laborer, drew all of of the pictures by hand, and rented a mimigraph magazine and printed out each issue.
In other words, he had an idea and he followed through. Without him, there would be no Getbig, no RX, no MD.....hell no bodybuilding at all for that matter

that s true for the most part regarding todays bodybuilding
but don t forget, the weiders were not the leaders for 15yrs now
when joe ruled the bodybuilding world it was better , becuase at least most of the dark side was kept behind behind closed doors and at least there was someone trying to coordinate the buisness, had some kind of a plan
today it s all druged up idiots, shmoes, rec drug addicts and prostitution in front of the eyes of the teens that pic up a magazine or log into bbwebsite to get tips to gain just some muscles to look like something

GALIENKO: I'm not positive about the following due to the fact that I have been out of the loop for a while now, but I seem to think that the new Men's Physique and /or Men's Classic BB Competitions were created in an effort to satisfy those individuals who wanted to compete in a form of bodybuilding contests that were somewhat similar to the IFBB professional competitions, but on a much different scale or format where the contenders do not appear to be 'pregnant' and continue to look somewhat athletic once the contest season is over.
(Or something like that!)
And you raise an interesting question which appears to be an exaggeration to which I have some serious doubts ...... "Half the pros from the 90s are dead."
I have not kept track of such figures and have to ask ...... Is that a fact or a guesstimate?
Somewhere on this Board I've seen a list of the current IFBB Men's Pros and it would be interesting to take that list and show for a fact who has passed away for any reason whatsoever.
Anyone willing to make an attempt at doing so?
Such a list just might alleviate the need for a Nostradamus like-character to add to the confusion when we GetBiggrers can do it all by ourselves.
The Weiders were not the 'worst' to promote bodybuilding events among the masses.
They were the ONLY!
Others tried but they failed miserably in an attempt to use the competing bodybuilders to bring added revenue intot he Olympic Lifting coffers.
And then into the Powerlifting coffers.
Or to financially support AAu events that needed funds to send AAU swimming teams, etc. to compete in distant regions.
Finally a small group of bodybuilders rebelled (include me in) and broke away and son thereafter the Weiders (both Ben and Joe) appealed to a small group of individuals (include me in) and were given a foot into the door.
But that is a story for another topic if there is any interest.
Others who wanted to control bodybuilding as it was known back then were present and fought avidly for control, but the Weiders showed up in suit an tie and were prepared to take control from the others because the Weiders placed bodybuilding first and foremost above the other lifting sports.
Lots more to this but please accept the above as my attempt to answer your thoughts and questions about the matter at hand.
Thanks for reading, KAL.
Any questions?Feel free to ask.
ANd then

Humble beginnings, here's a look at his first magazine -

Here's a look at that first magazine -
http://www.starkcenter.org/books/yourphysique/ .
He wasn't perfect, but it is a lesson in pulling one's self up by the boot straps.
-
He left no legacy. He was a businessman who got rich developing something new at the time; weight lifting/bodybuilding/physical conditionning. He insisted on the impressive,e xtremistic, duplicit part of the activity to get richer faster, and was considered a repressed homosexual with a beard of a wife. He sold shitty mags, shitty sups, and shitty benches, machines etc.
From there, others developed either similar or different business plans. Most people that revolved around him were lying scumbags and there are still a lot of them nowadays who disversified in several branches, most of them more corrupt than another. The basic mechanism is left unchanged; lying to gullible newbies to get their money.
A lot of truths. But mostly he just took an existing concept and maximized it commercially.
-
This is the brutal truth.
lol at you pussies who even get mad at this sort of response/truth. Can't take the heat, get out of the fucking kitchen.

Does this open the possibilty of Ed Conners hooking up with Weider's widow since he is bankrupt? He can better carry on the schmoing in the great tradition!!! He already is living in one of her condos in Vegas, and still has plenty of "house guests". He will really change the face of bodybuilding. Lol

I wouldn't have taken up the hobby of bodybuilding/weight lifting if not for weider publications. i believe this holds true for the majority of us here. I forgive him for manipulating countless impressionable young men, like myself, by implying that anyone could look like the bodybuilders in the magazine without drugs.
He brought an icon of my youth and the greatest action star of my generation, Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger to the United States and for that I am grateful. It is not likely that all the great films we have all enjoyed would have ever been made if Joe hadnt have seen something in a young Austrian with the funny last name, and decided to bring him to America. I forgive him for pushing crap supplements and ineffective training advice that he guaranteed would put slabs of muscle on my scrawny pubescent frame while simultaneously getting me ripped.
I could go on and on.

Lots of false information out there about Joe Weider and the IFBB. Lots of guys wronged by Joe over the years. Wonder if anyone will ever write a tell all book.
"Joe Weider, Trainer of Champions since 1936", but he was born in 1922 (plus or minus a year), so trainer of champions since he was 14.
The Weider Principles did change bodybuilding. The Weider Principles is what everyone does today at the gym: do specific exercises for specific muscles. At every gym in America, before the Weider Principles, they did the three Olympic lifts. That's it. Lifting weights was doing the three Olympic lifts.
And prior to the Weiders, bodybuilding contests were looking for the best representation of the American male. Your facial features mattered. There was alway an interview process and your ability to carry on a conversation contributed to your score. Weider changed that by promoting contests where the only thing that mattered was muscle size. The fans responded and IFBB contests took off and AAU contests withered.
Here is a brief history of the IFBB, http://www.musclememory.com/wiki/index.php?title=History_of_the_IFBB
1946 - The year the IFBB claims it was formed.
May 1947 - Dan Lurie registers the name International Federation of Body Builders with the city of New York. A recent search of the records finds nothing, however most records at that Brooklyn office had been lost in a fire.
October 10 1947 - Ben Weider hosts the Mr Canada contest, but nowhere on the flier does the name IFBB appear. It is unclear when the contests he promoted started using the name.
December 1947 - Joe Weider proposes the formation of the International Federation of Bodybuilders in the December 1947 issue of Your Physique
January 15 1948 - Dan Lurie holds IFBB Mr New York State at the Brooklyn Acadamy of Music. The Weider's disavow their relationship with Lurie.
June 1948 - The June 1948 Your Physique announces the first IFBB Contest will be the Mr Eastern North America contest.
January 1950 - In the January issue of Your Physique, the IFBB recognizes the AAU as the sole governing body of amateur bodybuilding, and that all IFBB contests are professional events only.
1948-1952 - It is unclear when the Mr Canada contest started using the IFBB name. Excluding that contest, during the five years 1948-1952, the Weider's IFBB holds the following events:
1948 - Mr Eastern North America
1949 -
Mr America
Mr California
Canada's Most Perfect Physique
Mr New York City
North American Championships
1950 - Best Developed Athlete in America, Mr Eastern America
1952 - Mr California
1953-1958 - Other than perhaps the Mr Canada conest, there are no IFBB events
January 25 1959 - The IFBB holds a Mr Universe, Mr America, and Mr Canada contest in Montreal.
1964 - The first IFBB International Congress is held
December 30, 1969
The IFBB is registered as a corporation in Canada.
Executives are Ben Weider, Raymond Crepault and Jacqueline Roy
NOM: FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE DES CULTURISTES INCORPOREE
MATRICULE: 1143385228
FORMATION: 1969-12-30 CONSTITUTION
LOCALITE: CANADA
September 4, 1970 - The first International Conference of the IFBB was held in Belgrade Yugoslavia. (Muscle Builder/Power, June 1971). How this is different than the one held in 1964 is not quite clear.
The IFBB claims this year's World Amateur Championships will be the 67th. This would make it one year older than the NABBA Universe. The IFBB Worlds use to be called the IFBB Universe, but due to copyright infringement they changed the name to World Amateur Championships in 1978. The first IFBB Universe was in 1959. There was no contest in 1961. However, the first four IFBB Universe contests were pro events. There have been 18 IFBB Universe contests, and 35 World Amateur Championships. So at most this year would be the 54th Worlds. but if you only count the amateur events, this year would be the 50th World Amateur Championships. You'd think they'd want to celebrate that.

First off, Tim, this is a tribute to Joe Weider and its pretty shitty that you're wanting to take a piss on it at this time. Secondly, don't believe everything that Dan Lurie told you....I know you still have your head stuck up his ass but he really was not as honest as you THINK he was. ::)

Was lucky enough to meet him and film him in 2009. Some people loved him and others hated him. But I believe that he did put bodybuilding into the mainstream of the public. And yes he made a lot of money for doing so. RIP Joe Weider.

None of this comes from Dan Luire. This is information I have found in my collection of bodybuilding magazines from the time. Nor is this pissing on Weider.

You know good and well that Dan Lurie wrote a tell all book because you built both of his websites advertising it as well as his personal website. Now is definitely not the time for your shit so go and run along and play outside.

No. You should hold him accountable for his lies. You should also credit him for the positive(s) he did.
true...
It's funny how I have a ton of Flex magazines from the 90s stored at my parents house, and I look at them and wonder at the amount of money that I wasted. But, I look at the Weider Bench-curl-lat combo that my dad bought me way back when, and I see the discipline that it taught me---setting goals, etc.
-
The bodybuilding world is going to shambles. PIP Joe Weider.
-
he sold lies and took advantage of the athletes.
useles magazine, useless everything.
hes responsible for the many fatso permabulkers out there, and responsible for the many entiraly delusional naturals out there.
he got very rich from this while fueling his homosexual desires and fantasys.
good riddance
but my favourite is Serge Nubret story from 75 Olympia party where Joseph dressed up Franko in girls school uniform ;D ;D ;D
-
Joe did his share of selling snake oil suppliments and other worthless crap but all those mags and his star "pupil" Arnold did inspire a lot of people to get into weight training. While his mags had its fair share of his suppliment and equipment adverts they did provide decent info on nutrition and exercises to start off with.
we all start questioning the recycled info, questionable pro routines and miracle suppliments as the truth became apparent but the playing in the matrix was fun for awhile.
-
but my favourite is Serge Nubret story from 75 Olympia party where Joseph dressed up Franko in girls school uniform ;D ;D ;D
Haha yes Jimmy Thomson had already told the story. I think Joe and Ben wanted Danny Padilla to dress in it at first but he refused. Franco was the only one small enough to fit. Funny that Serge verified Jimmy's story then suddenly Jimmy and Serge were silenced.
Maybe the 3 of them are having a nice chat right now.

Rest in Peace Joe Weider :(

RIP

RIP Mr. Weider
-
He left no legacy.
He was a good businessman....he used steroid filled bodybuilders to sell his worthless supplements and everyone else followed suit to this day :D
-
Now that Joe is dead , will Arnold make the push to trump the Olympia and make The ASC the top trophy and event in bodybuilding???
-
RIP Joe. We knew that Joe wasn't in the best of health, but it is always a shock and sadness when someone who you have known to be the father of bodybuilder passes away. Most definitely an icon in our world of bodybuilding, and like it or not, what Joe did brought a place where many of us prosper and benefit and work in because of his indirect actions. The supplement companies, the magazines, the bodybuilders and the IFBB all are there because of what Joe & Ben started.
So respect to the one who helped build it. I was fortunate to meet Joe quite a few times, and in was an honor.
-
R.I.P. to Joe, he had a vision and worked hard to achieve it, so you have to respect the man and mourn his passing. It still strikes me that IMO Weider is kinda like Don King... Did he raise his chosen sport up (neither actually did shit in the sport they exploited) to a new level of popularity and money? Yep, but Weider and King both were vampires who made far more than they gave back...
-
Truly an Icon and without this guy, there would be no bodybuilding......Rest In Peace
-
RIP Joe was a Huge Influnence on Bodybuildings early days and beyond.

http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-joe-weider-legendary-bodybuilding-and-fitness-icon-dies-at-93-20130323,0,6121077.story
Joe Weider, who made millions from a fitness empire and mentored a young Austrian bodybuilder who went on to become a major movie star and governor of California, has died.
Weider, 93, passed away Saturday of heart failure at his home in Los Angeles, according to a news release. The multimillion-dollar publishing empire he built included Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Shape, and Men’s Fitness magazines.
His death was marked by his protege Arnold Schwarzenegger, who called Weider "the godfather of fitness."
"Joe didn’t just inspire my earliest dreams; he made them come true the day he invited me to move to America to pursue my bodybuilding career," Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "I will never forget his generosity."
Weider was born Nov. 20, 1920, in Montreal. He first dreamed of power as a young teenager living in a gang-infested ghetto there. When he was 13, he crafted crude dumbbells and then worked out until he was able to stand down bullies who beat him up.
He created the Mr. Olympia event in 1965. Two years later, Weider discovered Schwarzenegger at a body-building contest in Europe.
He soon invited Schwarzenegger to move to California and funded the young bodybuilder's first apartment in Santa Monica, giving him enough money to make ends meet. Weider also orchestrated Schwarzenegger's first acting role in a TV movie.
Asked by the producers of "Hercules Goes Bananas" for a "a muscleman who could act a little," Weider pointed them to Schwarzenegger.
Schwarzenegger told The Times in 1989 that Weider pumped up his resume to get him the job, telling the producers that Schwarzenegger had done Shakespearean plays in Germany.
"It was all bull," Schwarzenegger admitted. "I didn't speak much English at all. We went to meet these guys and Joe said, 'Don't say anything. I'll do the talking.' "
While he had staunch supporters, Weider's critics complained about his outsized ego and bruising business style. Weider at times called himself the Jesus Christ, the Mahatma Gandhi and the Karl Marx of his field.
He studied the tactics of leaders who inspired the masses, including Winston Churchill, Moses, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler, and collected the original letters of men like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud.
"You think anybody says negative things about Jesus? About Moses?" Weider asked The Times during a 1989 interview. "You get a lot of atheists and devil worshipers that hate God. Why should I be loved by everybody?"
He is survived by his wife, Betty Weider

R.I.P (if I could lift a few inspiring posts?) "Father of Bodybuilding", "Master Blaster" "I owe you my life. Thank you." "Thank you for your vision" and "a sad day for our sport (sic)" . I can only imagine what you may have achieved should you put your energy into something for the betterment of others and not at their expense 8) peace out

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-21914541 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-21914541)
Known for creating the Mr Olympia bodybuilding contest, Weider built a magazine empire that included publications like Muscle and Fitness, Shape and Men's Fitness.
He died in Los Angeles of heart failure, his publicist said.
The Conan the Barbarian Star paid tribute to the man he called "the godfather of fitness."
"He taught us that through hard work and training we could all be champions," said the former California governor in a statement on his website.
"When I was a young boy in Austria, his muscle magazines provided me with the inspiration and the blueprint to push myself beyond my limits and imagine a much bigger future."
The former Mr Universe and Mr Olympia said Weider had encouraged him to come to the US and helped launch his acting career, securing his first role in a television film called Hercules Goes Bananas.
Producers had asked Weider if he knew of "a muscleman who could act a little", said Mr Schwarzenegger, adding that Weider had told them: "I got the perfect guy, he's done Shakespearean plays in Germany, he's a great actor, but his English isn't too good."
In his statement, Mr Schwarzenegger said Weider had supported him throughout his career - with illustrious film credits including Hercules in New York, Kindergarten Cop and Dr Dolittle II - and even when he made the move into politics.
"He was there for me constantly throughout my life... and I will miss him dearly."
Weider is survived by his wife, Betty.

LOS ANGELES - Joe Weider, a legendary figure in bodybuilding who helped popularize the sport worldwide and played a key role in introducing a charismatic young weightlifter named Arnold Schwarzenegger to the world, died Saturday. He was 93.
Weider's publicist, Charlotte Parker, told The Associated Press that the bodybuilder, publisher and promoter died of heart failure at his home in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley.
"I knew about Joe Weider long before I met him," Schwarzenegger, who tweeted the news of his old friend's death, said in a lengthy statement posted on his website. "He was the godfather of fitness who told all of us to be somebody with a body. He taught us that through hard work and training we could all be champions."
A bodybuilder with an impressive physique himself, Weider became better known in later years as a behind-the-scenes guru to the sport.
He popularized bodybuilding and spread the message of health and fitness worldwide with such publications as Muscle & Fitness, Flex and Shape. Schwarzenegger himself is the executive editor of Muscle & Fitness and Flex.

If you consider bodybuilding's early days the late 1960s and early 1970s. Bob Hoffman and John Grimek had the biggest influence on bodybuilding's early days.

If you consider bodybuilding's early days the late 1960s and early 1970s. Bob Hoffman and John Grimek had the biggest influence on bodybuilding's early days.
Bodybuilding stemmed from a movement called Physical Culture, these were the glory days of physical development, before others came along and exploited it and made money from deceit and the drug abusers that infiltrated the culture. Vince Gironda was also a pioneer in bodybuilding, and unlike Joe, Vince actually worked out regularly.

WEIDER IS SYNONYMOUS WITH BODYBUILDING AS WE KNOW IT . he was the founder and pionner of many things . mr olympia was his thing too .
-
:) it was 1965 larry scott and joe weider were sitting down drinking an olympia beer discussing the state of bodybuilding. how a guy once he wins mr america or mr universe has no where to go but out of the sport. the rst his history. incidentally larry scott never got the 1000 dollar prize for winning the first mr olympia that was contingent on the show turning a profit. all larry got was the mazzola butter kings crown.
-
Man I had almost forgot that commercial!
And I still think that while what he did for bodybuilding was overall good (minus the huge dope problem today but especially for bringing Arnold here) Joe was the Hugh Hefner of Schmoes.
hoffman actually had first crack{pun unintended} at arnold but he turned him down because he didn't see the purpose of havinfg a pro bodybuilder on the payroll.

Weider created what we know as bodybuilding. I didnt know the man, but he deserves to be respected for his contributions. R.I.P. Joe.

Jewish tradition requires the interval between death and the funeral and burial as short as possible, often the same day, except on the Sabbath. So if they are observant, the burial will be today.

Did Weider make Arnold? Or did Arnold make Weider? Prior to Arnold, the Weiders and the IFBB were considered second rate to Hoffman and the AAU, as well as to NABBA.
-
Did joe ever use the Weider Principle on Betty?
like the pre-exhaust principle with Arnold lou and Franco

Sign of the Times.
RIP Joe Weider, the man lived a full life and influenced millions.
The end of a legacy, and the beginning of the end for the era of professional bodybuilding he created. Without Joe, who knows where it will all end up.

You will never go bald...
-
RIP - I respected his hard work. But let's also state all the facts.
Legal issues
In 1972, Weider and his brother Ben found themselves a target of an investigation led by U.S. Postal Inspectors. The investigation involved the claims regarding their nutritional supplement Weider Formula No. 7. The product was a weight-gainer that featured a young Arnold Schwarzenegger on the label. The actual claim centered on consumers being able to "gain a pound per day" in mass. Following an appeal wherein Schwarzenegger testified, Weider was forced to alter his marketing and claims. Also in 1972, Weider encountered legal problems for claims made in his booklet Be a Destructive Self-Defense Fighter in Just 12 Short Lessons. Weider was ordered to offer a refund to 100,000 customers of a "five-minute body shaper" that was claimed to offer significant weight loss after just minutes a day of use. The claims, along with misleading "before and after" photographs, were deemed false advertising by a Superior Court Judge in 1976.
In the 1980s, Weider found himself answering charges levied by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). In 1984, the FTC charged that ads for Weider's Anabolic Mega-Pak (containing amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and herbs) and Dynamic Life Essence (an amino acid product) had been misleading. The FTC complaint was settled in 1985 when Weider and his company agreed not to falsely claim that the products could help build muscles or be effective substitutes for anabolic steroids. They also agreed to pay a minimum of $400,000 in refunds or, if refunds did not reach this figure, to fund research on the relationship of nutrition to muscle development.
In 2000, Weider Nutritional International settled another FTC complaint involving false claims made for alleged weight loss products. The settlement agreement called for $400,000 to be paid to the FTC and for a ban on making any unsubstantiated claims for any food, drug, dietary supplement, or program

Weider also published a lot of beef cake magazines, and fought indecency charges.
New York Times, April 29, 1957:
Magazines Indicted for Indecency
The Union County grand jury today returned indictments against the publishers and distributors of seven national magazines on charges of conspiracy to sell indecent literature. The true bills are the first of their kind in New Jersey, according to Prosecutor H. Russell Morss, Jr.
Consiracy is a misdemeanor punishable by up to three years in state prison and a $1,000 fine. Among the publishers indicted was Body Beautiful Publications, Inc.

I did go to the Joe Weider Memorial Tribute event in Santa Monica last Saturday, and it was a bigger event than I thought it would be. About 350 people, a lot of family members, but also also of people that worked or knew Joe. There were a lot of great stories and reflections of Joe, and each person making them was quite interesting. I actually learned a lot.
Here are some of pics from the event.
