Title: Time Pieces, What's On Your Wrist?
Post by: Skorp1o on March 05, 2014, 08:06:44 AM
Curious to see if there's any Getbiggers with a taste for time pieces and if so what do you have (feel free to post pictures)

My everyday watch is Tag, takes a lot of punishement and banging.

Then my main love is a Cartier Calibre I got last year and I wear it now and then and when going out...etc as it has a more classic feel about it.

Will get a third if this year ends well money wise.

My mainstay and 25th birthday present from wife/parents combined

My favourite watch is actually a 1950 solid gold omega like this (was only £800) I bought this off my father in law, and glad I did as we were close and he passed on less than a year after that so it's a special watch.

man, I haven't worn a watch in years.  i dont wear jewelry either.  I wear basketball shorts and Dr Seuss t-shirts most days.
I play a $3000 guitar, drive a $1200 truck.  My priorities are all messed up.

If I was going to get one, it'd have to be one of those really tough ones, all military or camping-like.  Shiny and gold, I'd scuff that up fast.

nice collection, my friends has a similar omega to the seamster, built like a tank solid and heavy and looks very nice in the sun.

I was in Vegas and was going to by the Devon watch, had it on my wrist and learned that the glass is actually a special composite plastic.  Plastic!?  Fuck that.  Did not buy

I ended up buying this from IWC at the Encore

I like a Tag, they are a good everyday watch especially the Link line.

But in terms of quality, the omega is built like a spaceship lol - I picked up a new Tag link in a jewellers and asked if I could see the new omega planet ocean (was about 1k more to be fair) and even the way the links moved against eachother, you could tell one had been CRAFTED.

However, saying that, it comes down to preference of style plus quality so someone may prefer a cheaper watch that has better styling......

I'm sure you earn about 5x what I do though so lol  ;D

Personally I don't like the Links line. Calibre 16s are nice and formula one are solid if you get the full metal ones. But like you said its a good everyday watch, I snorkle with mine, mountain bike, gym with it and it hasn't flinched. the Cartier I feel is OTT for everyday.

If I had the money Patek Phillipe would the one for one for me.

I have a few Tags and Movado's, not even sure of the models.  I bought them over the years, and thought they were cool, but only wear them about three times a year, and it's usually the Tag Aquaracer I believe.

Cocks are overrated when you can use your fist...hence you need a solid wrist watch, water resistant is a must.

Most people try to buy flashy, gawdy looking watches to try to make up for the fact that they cannot afford a classy, expensive watch like a Rolex.

So they buy these watches to make it look like they have a lot of money.

I mean, why would you want to be such an extravagant, gawdy looking watch? Looks tacky.  :-\ :-\

My watch - Armani. Nothing special, just wear it for work.

lol Armani probably contracts Fossil to make their watches.

Rolex looks gaudy and classless next to something like a Patek or Hermes

Perhaps, but not to the extent to some other watches. Some of these watches are just over the top in terms of appearance.

I guess to each their own.

Rolex are nice. But a total douche watch, and with the stigma of counterfeit rolex, everyone will assume yours is as fake as rich pianas arms.

IWC, or another Omega will be my next large purchase.

the 300-2000$ retail dollar range is the most useless range in all timepieces.

youre overpaying for what you get regardless.

Stay on either side of those numbers.

So wait, a watch indicates that someone should be taken seriously? So if youre wearing an expensive suit, but no watch, you will not be taken seriously?  ??? ??? :-\ :-\ :-X :-X

I have a feeling that if Bill Gates showed up to work with no watch, he would still be taken seriously.

I know it sounds ridiculous. I can see where people that have never been in a similar situation wouldnt understand, but yes. Absolutely.

I size coworkers, associates, and people I have done business with, based on suit, the cut, cufflinks if wearing french cuffs, etc.

I had to go out and buy a 350 mont blanc pen when I get to a previous job because that particular "office" was big on pens.
The first time I signed something with my pentel gel pen my supervisor called me out on it for a week.

Exactly.

This is the difference between people like Bill Gates, who have actual power, and people like you, who have to give off the appearance of power.

Bill Gates can show up to work in jogging pants and people would still "bow" down to him. It must suck to have to constantly try to keep up an appearance of power. How tiring that must be.  :-\ :-\

try it and report back.

Right away. It's no deal breaker, nor do I care if he's wearing one or not or what it is. I just tend to look at shoes first, then if the wrist is shining, I happen to glance at what it is. I just appreciate quality. The craftsmanship in an IWC is mind blowing.

Its not that I am vehemently opposed to dressing up at work. It has more to do with the clientele I work with. It would not be good to "dress up."

I decided to buy a sportscar this winter instead. Nice try though  ;D

But yes, I am too broke for both a Hermes watch and the car in the same year.

FYI, at that price, the watch is essentially the band and the look of the face. Nothing more. Fossil doesn't make that style, thus the origin of manufacture is entirely irrelevant in determining worth.

Lets see your watch and garage. Better have a Mclaren and diamond studded Patek to back up your fucking retarded comments.

Will get a third if this year ends well money wise.

the only thing i did get ripped on was a huge order of 1970's muscle mags for $500. it never showed up.  so not bad concidering the risks i took

for that price range you wont get anything genuine that is a big named swiss really

for a couple hundo I woud aim towards a citizen or one of the nicer timex.

great watch.

dont be tempted by brands like invicta or akribos etc. garbage quality.

citizen/timex doesnt pretend to be anything that its not. reliable, respectable and very versatile.

I would lean more towards the citizen world.

Actually, I own a couple of pocket watches one of which is over 100 years old.  I also have a 40+ year old Seiko Diver's Watch which I just had repaired so that I can begin wearing it again (even had the hour marks refreshed  with luminous paint).

Mine is limited edition with a different face to this one, but is pretty similar. I paid circa $4,000 and now after 9 years it retails at $7,500+

They are an excellent investment.

very, very true.

people dont realize that.

I would at the bare minimum break even if I sold all my watches.

As long as you keep them mint and well serviced.

i bought some old muscle magazines off a seller called midcity somewhat pricey, but mags showed up in great condition esp considering their age earlly 60's stuff. i got burnt once but money was refunded after about a month, after i complained.

Could get a chronograph from Movado's ESQ line in that range. I have seen the classic look Movado at Costco under $500.

Seiko makes some quality watches.Tag uses their movements in some models.

True Story. I was in China and this guy comes up trying to sell me fake rolexes, breitlings etc...  I told him how good the quality is because I'm there for another 2 weeks and if they are shit I'll come find him.  He asks me which models do I like and I told him and he said he'll be back in an hour.  I came back and asked him where he went.  Told me he went to another town to pick up the better quality and even showed me side by side comparisons.  Big difference.  The price was a little higher but I bought a couple.  10 years later they are still shiney, no tarnishing and work great.

A Cartier Tank watch is one of the more quiet, understated watches in the jewelry world.
A men’s Tank watch is 1.25 inch by 1.50 inch.

Apocryphally, it’s called a Tank watch because the first one was given to General “Blackjack” Pershing to thank him for using tanks in keeping the Germans out of Paris in WWI. It is not remotely a watch that would be worn in a battle situation.

There are many other brands that ape it.

Movado, which I bought over 7 years ago.  But if/when it dies I doubt I'll replace it with any watch since I can just use my cellphone to check time.

Personally I'm not big on status-items like an expensive watch but to each their own.
