First get rid of those glasses you look like a weird nerdy fag, if you wear them to protect your eyes when a schome shoot his load in your face then I guess I understand, you have no traps or shoulders and your back lacks thickness, plus you are a skinny twink so I am giving you a D you Failed.

When you say Keto what type of Carb intake are we talking about?

Personally, unless one is dieting for a contest, I see no reason for full blown Keto.

If you stick to about 150 grams, average, a day, most of the glucose will be used by the brain with the rest stored as glycogen. As long as you're not in a calorie surplus, there will be no fat accumulation.

A lot of the Paleo "Community" are former and soon to be again fatsos who use the diet as a pretext for gorging themselves with bacon and heavy cream.

No carbs on keto..only trace carbs through nuts and green veggies. .I agree its great for contest prep..
Paleo for every day life..I dont gorge myself with bacon and heavy cream is disgusting.

I'll ask.

Would you be so kind as to lay out a typical day's food, if you don't mind. And yes, I'm genuinely curious. You're one of the few guys who posts pics, so I think you have cred.

Are you still doing a lot of cardio everyday, or have you found the keto diet has allowed you to back off on the cardio?
meal 1: 6 eggs and half and avacado meal 2: 10 oz bison, unlimited broccoli  meal 3: 8 oz chicken, spinach salad, macadamia nut oil, handful almonds meal 4: 8 oz grass fed ground beef, unlimited broccoli meal 5: post workout shake 2 scoop isopure meal 6: 10 oz salmon, asparagus sprinkled in olive oil
cardio: 45 in am, 20 post workout

Thanks man. I appreciate the response.

That's a lot of food - a lot more than I eat. And I'm not saying this to boast - I have about 40lbs more lean mass than you do.

But then, I don't do cardio at all. I only lift weights 5x/week.

I eat between 1600 and 2000 calories/day. But I tend to err on the side of lower carb like you do. It's just how I eat...I feel much more satisfied and full eating proteins and fats and veggies than i do eating carbs.

It's amazing how powerful genetics are, isn't it? Two men - one outweighs the other by significant increments, yet has to eat less and looks less lean. It's a bitch!

Good physique as always G4I. Thanks for answering my question.
Yeah I have a huge appetite. .I started off the diet with lower #'s oike 6-8 oz of meat in the meals and I was drained. .no energy at all..once I upped the #'s then I started to feel great and really hit my stride..for me the beef/steak meals are key..sometimes I'll take in 2-3 beef meals a day..keeps me more energized and I feel stronger.

6 weeks before/after

When a person who is not well developed go to very low bodyfat they just look stupid, eat like a normal gymrat and go  train heavy doing deadlift, inclines, presses etc cause you dont have any traps, shoulders, back or upper chest, concentrate on getting developed instead of dropping bodyfat and looking like shit.

Ruin?? This diet has been nothing but amazing for me regarding fat loss and muscle retention.  I honestly enjoy these meals that I eat..and FYI I am getting on stage in a few weeks, but thats no excuse to just explore different nutritional tactics, to see what foids work for your physique and general well being.

I have only done 1 refeed meal in 6 weeks, I had half a box of honey nut cheerios, a cup of oats, raisins, and a sliced banana, all in a bowl with almond milk..honestly I didn't even enjoy it..my prep coach told me I needed it so I did so. When I initially started the diet I felt weak and tired, my body was still adjusting, I upped my fats a bit and my body responded..thats when I started hitting my stride.

You have a good chest, but you just have a huge discrepancy between lower and upper chest. I would say start ALL of your chest days with an incline exercise, then move on to flat (don't do any decline) then finish off with incline dumbbell flies.

Why bison over very lean hamburger?

I've been eating ground bison for several years now, and most of my main meals revolve around bison when it comes to getting into beach body shape each summer.    A large homemadeTaco salad with ground bison, shredded lettuce, cheese, chopped tomato and spices is one of my favorite meals for getting ripped for summer.

If you are going to get thick upper pecs you will get them with declines.
People dont seem top grasp how the pectoral muscle works.

I challenge anyone to fully flex your pecs and I bet nobody holds their arms out horizontally in front of them or at an incline upwards.
Everyone to a man/woman will do this

declines for me are a shoulder wrecker, and most people due to the movement being short ranged go way too heavy...most people will say'declines are for lower pecs..'

Stop going heavy on them, and 'most people' are wrong.
All I do for pecs are decline machine press, cable flys (standing) and a one arm standing fly with my power band.

Here's what Arnold thinks:  :D

Ever the diligent student, Arnold analyzed his idol’s chest development the way a, geneticist might examine a string of nucleotides and determined that there were three distinct features that, when viewed as a whole, accounted for Park’s pectoral prosperity.

First, the muscles themselves were just plain large: thick, wide and high.

Second, his pectoralis major (the lower portion) and pectoralis minor (the upper portion) groups were balanced with one another in a way that gave his chest a proportionate squared-off look rather than the rounded sagging appearance typical of those who focused too heavily on flat benches and not enough on inclines. Finally, supporting Park’s pecs was a voluminous rib cage, the biggest in the sport at the time.

This is basically the template for John Kiefers Carbnite or maybe Carb Backloading (given the option for a potato in the evening meal)

http://rippeder.com/content/what-arnold-really-ate-70s

Quote
You have probably read Arnold's books or read his article on Flex magazine but have you ever wondered is that how and what he really ate? Well back in the early 1970's Arnold Schwarzenegger trained with Ric Drasin. Ric is an accomplished artist, actor, webcast host, stuntman, writer, personal trainer, former bodybuilder and retired pro wrestler. He has a series show on youtube called Ric's Corner. Well having trained with Arnold he has some insider information on what Arnold really ate. According to Ric the diet consisted of the following:

Morning: (At Zucky's)

Cheese Omelet
Hamburger patty
Cottage cheese
Coffee

Lunch:

Beef patty
Eggs
Cottage cheese

Dinner:

Steak or Chicken
Cottage cheese
Salad or baked potato

In between Meals:

Rheo Blair's Protein

On Sunday's only:

Eat whatever you want: pizza, ice cream, and so on

Pectoralis minor is a very small muscle that is underneath the pec major.  "Targeting" it with incline bench to build a big upper chest is the worst kind of broscience nonsense.

Somewhat incorrect.
Declines = entire sore chest in my experience. Your pecs are designed to bring your arms down and across your body. That motion activates your entire pec.

Little presumptive, don't you think?

Mechanics bro, look it up. Pec pulls arm down and across, which actives the entire pec. It's exactly what happens, no bro science. My chest is far more sore top to bottom with declines than it EVER was with inclines. In fact, I completely dropped inclines and only do declines as I feel it activates far more muscle fibers.

Besides, Arnold attributed his chest to flyes mostly. And I'm sure genetics and his massive ribcage has a little to do with it.

If I do a bench press flat my pecs relax when I get past midpoint, they are only under stress in the bottom of the movement.

It may not load the areas of the pecs the same, but it still stands that mechanically, the pec is designed to bring the arm across and down. Thats their entire purpose, and it recruits the most fibers doing that. Which is exactly what I said the whole time.

Plud I dont think BB.com diagramds, no matter how fancy, are going to convince the scientific crowd. Lots of bro-science in all their logic.

What I`ve noticed when it comes to chest development is that it`s not the angle of the body, i.e. decline, incline, etc, but where you lower the bar.   When I want to focus on upper chest I do a regular bench press, except I lower the bar to my neck instead of my chest.

 ???

The hands down at the waist flexes the entire pec including the upper pec.

I hope ESFitness re-posts his destruction of the incline press as an upper chest builder.

It was basically saying that for the last 30 years people have been working inclines to build the upper pecs yet there are still very few athletes with thick upper pecs.

Why not?

Dorian actually mentioned that, that he thinks deckines are the best for overall chest development, as it hits the most parts lf the pec thanks to body mechanics. ... BUT, towards the end of his career when he wad working on refining he focused on inclines, which I found interesting.

Dorian has a very no-nonsense, scientific approach to hos exercise choices based on body mechanics and the way each musvle was designed to function.

THIS ..plus front delts come into play most people who are strong at pressing and have weak pecs'size wise'have front delts to spare.upper chest and clavicle depends on ones structure wide/narrow and how chest falls in with front delts .overpowering delts will make chest appear smaller ,Arnold had full pecs and sloped shoulders chest was focal point..

Here's my case against LONG TERM Ketosis.

If your brain really preferred  Ketones over Glucose, why isn't Ketosis the brain's default source of energy with Glucose serving as the backup?

The body has much more stored fat than carbs, yet the brain will first use the latter.

The reason is that Glucose is the body's preferred energy source for intense effort: sprinting, weight lifting and THINKING.

IMO, you want to eat enough carbs so that your brain and Glycogen stores are supplied, but not so much that the body will use them for basic metabolic needs and put dietary fat in storage.

6 eggs and half and avacado
10 oz bison, unlimited broccoli
8 oz chicken, spinach salad, macadamia nut oil, handful almonds
8 oz grass fed ground beef, unlimited broccoli meal
post workout shake 2 scoop isopure
10 oz salmon, asparagus sprinkled in olive oil

Lets see:

[ all measurements obtained by typing "calorie in <quantity> <item>" into google ]

half an avocado: 6g
"unlimited broccoli", let's say 1 lb: 32g
"handful" almonds, lets say 50g: 11g
"spinach" salad, lets say 2 servings spinach (plus who knows what else): 2g
"unlimited broccoli", again 1lb: 32g
isopure: im going to assume 0 carb variety
asparagus (lets say 2 cups, or 270g): 10g

So 93 grams of carb (and I think this is being conservative) is "keto" ???

so there's this carb called fiber. it's great, how it works is it's a carb sure, but the body cannot digest it so it just passes through without getting absorbed.

Im going to go ahead and assume you're new here and havent seen any of the other posts in the last half decade where I have explained my journey from obese child to semi-fitness, back to obesity from health issues and back to semi-fitness, now on my way to actually being in some semblance of real shape for the 1st time in my life.

Well studies have been done that prove putting a  bench on a slight incline 10 - 30 degrees does activate the fibres in the upper chest more than flat or decline.

Incline is superior to standard flat or decline pressing for this purpose and this is backed by exercise physiology testings .
To get the most activation of the fibers in this area then flat pressing or even inclining with a reverse grip is the best pressing motion to use, again backed by studies.

A slight incline is superior for full pec development as the body naturally drops shoulders back and arches the pecs upwards and this lends to activating the upper section more,
giving the so called perfect set up for benching for full pec development.
People that are genetically blessed for flat benching just fall into this position on the flat , chest high, shoulders back and down and shoulder blades pinched together , these people
have the perfect structure for benching and can develop full thick pecs from top to bottom with flat benching alone - think nubret and columbo as prime examples.

So why after the last 30 years of incline pressing do we not see every top cometitor with full upper chests?

Why not?
As I pointed out to him , the fibers in the area of the upper section are far and few between compared with the lower to outer sections - you will never see thick upper pecs
that compare to lower and outer for this very reason , the meat of the pec are in the mid/lower to outer areas - unless it's on a genetic freak like Arnold.

The upper section is thin on fibers ( for the average trainer)and that is why it's harder to develop and bring up.

All chest exercises work the whole pectoral structure , "but" you can put more stress on certain areas of the muscle by doing certain exercises , in this case inclined work.

If you use a reverse grip on bent rows (using correct form mind) then the whole of the lat contracts (along with other back muscles) but more stress is directed toward the lower
areas/fibers , the same apply's for all muscle groups .

There's no "bro science" in any of this it's fact.

 :)

So a thick upper chest is down to genetics.

Gotcha.
If you have the fibres there they will be stimulated by any exercise, inclines wont make them any bigger, no evidence at all for that.

Also, if its "fact" why doesnt everyone who does inclines have thick upper pecs.
I dont care what all the studies say, look around, the evidence contrary to the studies is staring you in the face.
For the record if I do inclines all I get is a pump in my delts and arms, zippo in the chest.

Genetics is key in anything - but no that's not what I said , there are studies that show inclines work the area harder - how thick and developed
will be determined by genetics, but it would be foolish not to try and develop the area to the best you can using the tools (inclines or reverse bench) that have been shown
in countless studies to work this section of the muscle and put more of the load and emphasis on this area.

You disagree and have found something that works for you - that's fine.  :)

Stop quoting studies and look at the evidence.

Check your form then  ;)
If you are not setting yourself up right then of course you wont feel it in the area .
Stop quoting studies and look at the evidence.
I'd say most peoples form is the issue.. Studies just back up what is being said that incline work does work the upper sections.

If you can't feel inclines in the upper area it could be a number of things , form being one ?

You say look around the evidence is contrary - well look to the guys with developed chests top to bottom , what do they do ? they have inclines in there chest routines.
of course genetics is the be end of all,  but if they hadn't of spent time focusing on the upper areas (with inclines) they certainly would not have developed like they did
this is fact and studies just enforce it.

The upper area is hard to develop on most people EG: the majority - but that is certainly not "evidence" as you say and is no case to say inclines don't develop this area.
I think "evidence" is a poor word to use as there is zilch it's just a hard area to develop for most

Since the brain's preferred source of energy is glucose, in Ketosis, the body produces glucose from alternative sources: gluconeogenesis, mainly from Protein.

So, if you're in Ketosis, you want to up your Protein intake to account for the loss.

So how, and how often do you carb up Go 4 It?

Do you need to carb up just cause your muscles are flat? That doesn't actually mean you're losing muscle does it?
I've carbed up 3 times in 10 weeks of prep thus far..sure I had more fullness the next two days or so, but I've found with more red meat/bison it keeps me looking fuller and gives me more energy, also the addition of a creatine supplement works great with this keto diet.

no problem..you gotta experiment to find what works for you, with Palumbos diet he incorporates nuts/shakes/lean protein meal..I found this route doesn't really work for me...I needed fatter meats for meals..once I found the formula my body responded.

I wrote about this a few years back. One time, instead of having the typical highish incline that we normally see,  I put the incline on my bench to the 2nd notch. It only has two incline notches. I noticed right away that I was getting a pump in the upper chest/mid. Before it was just a slight upper and front delt pump.

I started on Sunday when I saw this thread. I've done keto before and love it. I'm down 8 pounds to like 178 in seven days (mostly water I guess).

You're right about finding what works for you. I've noticed that when I start to lose it something like Bacon or Pork Sausage gets me right back on track.

I had a bunch of Salmon Sashimi yesterday with Advocado, too good. You can just tell this is the way humans were meant to eat. It's not a "diet" at all.

I'm glad you've found something that works for you, but no carbs is just not for me. The 1 contest I did keto for, I looked extremely flat and was very irritable. Carbs keep me happy and full.
