I have lost a lot of people in life, even early on, but this is really tough.  :-\

No HOMO,

My cat is a stray I found, turns out it's a turkisn angora

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_Angora

This cat is smart and acts like a dog, fetchs etc. He literally doesn't leave my side as I am his constant human. He looks exactly like the second pic, the rusty colored cat with white, identical almost. I never did like cats but his dog like behavior is gonna make it hard when he dies. He is sick, epilepsy, FIV, fucker has cost me like 10g's for dental etc.

Yes she was very sick and nobody really knew why.  The last few weeks I was taking care of her every need.  Helping her go to the bathroom every time, feeding her with a turkey baster because she could no longer drink water herself or eat.  Every now and then she would rally and give me those strong eyes.  Some days the eyes were pleading, some were content.

We buried her last night in an Iris garden.

Hug your cat for me.  Its hard.  Tesla, (we called her Hooter and a bunch of other names) never left our side.  I was never away from her for more than a few hours and she came with us every where we went.

The vet had no idea?
They thought Ehrlichiosis, a Tick-Borne disease of some sort.  I am leaning more towards some type of Kidney disease.  The vet nearly wrongly diagnosed her with cancer initially, reading the scans and misinterpreting chicken in her stomach for cancers, so there is that.

Most dogs and people for that matter, are wrongly diagnosed or misdiagnosed, but I do not blame anyone.

It sounds like it may have manifest like an auto-immune disorder. Did she have any vaccinations just prior to the symptom outbreak?

I still have one left.  I don`t think I can ever get any more dogs or any pets because its just too hard and their lifespans too short.  The thought of them dying is always there from day one, at least for me anyways and it really is upsetting to think about.

Yeah.. I have 1. First dog I've ever had. It's funny how soon after getting her I realised I'd have to say goodbye to her at some point and fear that day. I honestly have no idea if I'd ever get another.

I friend of mine lost his last year, swore blind he was done. A month later he had to go get a new dog. I don't think he could handle the absence

No vaccinations.  Last year at this time, she developed an intense thirst for water and would drink bowls full.  I was taking her outside every 2-3 hours.  She acted normal though despite the water drinking.  Then, she began to lose a bit of fur on her shoulders and she had some sort of skin infection/flaking.   We took her in and they couldn`t really find anything, but decided that a Tick-Borne disease may be the culprit as it is common in Greyhounds.  They can get bit at a young age and carry the disease for years before it manifests.  She then started developing a sort of dementia, but it would clear every now and then.  Then it just got worse and worse.  She would pace uncontrollably and I would sit with her for hours trying to calm her and it would work.   The last few weeks were the worst.  She never cried out in pain or anything though.  We started the Doxycycline again a few days ago thinking maybe it was a flare up of the Tick-Borne Disease.

I am not quite sure she ever even had one though.  :-\

Feel for you mate, had to have mine put to sleep in 2009, he started being aggressive and almost killed our cat. (he had several instances or aggression, it wasn't an isolated incident)
He was never a social dog but we had a connection I have never had with any other dog.
I think about him every day.

Thats a hard thing to do.  Some people handle all of it easy, at least they pretend to do so on message boards and sometimes in person etc...

But to me at least, these losses are harder than for people.

Damn man I feel terrible for you...I know how much you loved and love your pets :'(

I have two cats and when I see them sleeping or just relaxing I become envious of them in a good way.....not a care in the world :)

I don't know where I read it but I saw a quote that said some thing like this "People have friends and family they get around and travel and get to meet new people and experience new things....your pet only has you and the interaction you give it...so make sure you take bit of everyday to play with them"  I make sure I do.

Serious note, I hate losing pets. Ive lost 2 parrots that I had for 5-10 years each and it was a horrible traumatic experience. Especially since I wound up holding them both while they died.

Losing animals is tougher than losing most people (except direct family/loved ones)

I had a dog before my Greyhounds who had epilepsy his whole life and he was on Phenobarbitol to control his seizures.  It worked only some of the time and he would still have them.  Very scary thing as you have to make sure they don`t bite their tongue or fall off the bed or hurt themselves.  I do see some put their dogs down from that, but we were able to manage it and he lived a long life.

Parrots would be really hard for me as wells as I know how intelligent they are and how bonded they can get.

We both were right beside our Tesla last night and were holding and petting her when she died.  Its something that I will never be able to get out of my mind and its tough to think about.  My wife was unable to sleep last night and did not go to bed until 10 am this morning because she keeps replaying it all back in her head.  I try to tell her not to do it, but I feel awful because I am doing it too.

Sorry for your loss.  It's the hardest part of including a pet in your life.  Don't let it discourage you from giving another deserving fur baby a good life even though it's hard to think about that right now.  Also, don't second guess yourself on any part of this last year.  It will drive you insane.  Just know, you & Jez gave her the best life she could possibly have.

Stan went missing over the winter and when he was returned to us he was having quite severe fits. They put him on high does of barbiturates to control it, but they had side effects. It became a vicious cycle of his fits becoming worse and having to increase the doses, which increased the sides. In the end he had a massive fit and never recovered. If i'm being honest we should have had him put down sooner, but you always hope they are going to make a recovery.

I lost the French mastiff I rescued last summer to a massive seizure. the vet called to say Hugo had passed and when I hung up the phone I cried like a baby bro.

it's a tough thing losing such a great a companion and friend. I know there is a place out dogs are playing together in the sun where there's cool streams and butterfiles to chase. and one day we'll join them.

but what we have to do now is what we are meant to do- rescue and rehome another.

Thanks No One.  I am thinking of maybe using your workouts to get my mind going again.  I haven`t really felt this bad in a long time and something intensive like that could probably be pretty good therapy.

I feel for you and the Bigger dogs.  Its not fair that they have a shorter lifespan than most.  It sucks how much things with a bigger dog can change in just a year or two.  Here today, gone the next.

This is not exactly the appropriate thread to post this (thread about TA's loss), so I will also put something on the pet board too.

All of us who have fur babies will probably have to go through this at some point.  Anticipating the euthanasia of a pet, taking them in, the cold, sterile, medicinal environment of a "procedure room"... the whole experience is very stressful for the pet and you.  Our pets pick up on that "energy" we put out.  Since it's inevitable we're all going to have to go through it, we might as well make it as peaceful as possible.

I recently had experience with http://www.lapoflove.com  (I'm sure there are others) and many vets will do in home euthanasia if you ask.  This was by far the only way I would ever consider handling the situation in the future (if it's something that is being planned for).  It makes the best of a horrible situation.  The pet is in their own environment, surrounded by those who love them, and they go peacefully.

Man up. The dog was a food relationship. You fed it, it feigned affection. If your ugly ass was the one to have died that dog would have stepped over your awkward looking carcass and moved on to the next food relationship. Man up.

General Patton apparently loved his dog more than the entire United States Army and only shed tears for it.

Really sorry for your loss, man. Hang in there. My sweet boxer has been gone for over 6 years, she got cancer at age 11. Takes a long time to feel better, & whenever someone goes through it like you are now, it brings all the memories of that time right back. The years I got to spend with her were totally worth having to go through that, but no more dogs for me...

Yet wish you to the devil;
But when a good dog wags his tail,
You know he's on the level.

On Dec. 9, 1945, Patton was on his way to hunt pheasant near Mannheim with Gen. Hobart R. Gay. At a checkpoint a few miles from their destination, Patton looked back and saw a dog belonging to their hunting adviser in the trailing jeep.

''Woody, go and bring that dog inside the car,'' Patton said. ''He looks cold.''

Private Woodring fetched the dog. Patton got out of his seat and climbed into the rear with General Gay. The dog sat up front.

''That simple act of kindness toward an animal ended the life of a national hero,'' Mr. Woodring wrote. Moments later Patton slammed against the partition separating the front and back seats and became the only passenger injured. The impact broke the general's neck.

A man may smile and bid you hail
Yet wish you to the devil;
But when a good dog wags his tail,
You know he's on the level.
~Author Unknown

Thanks for this.  All the time we spend with them is worth it.  In fact, if ever asked what makes me happiest, I always say being with my dogs.  Its so difficult to think of what it is like without them, but its also equally difficult thinking about going through it all again.

Do you think you will ever have another dog and have you come close to getting another?

There really are MANY reasons to rescue an animal and integrate them into your life.  I can only think of selfish reasons not to ... :-\

Beautiful dog, awesome home gym.

I also train at home and when I would go down into the weight room, I could always hear Tesla tapping around, wondering when I will come back up, wanting to go down there too.  She always had to know where I was at all times.  She was a very needy and emotional dog at times.  I am really going to miss her.

I'm sorry for your loss, TA! I also know how it's like to lose a dog family member, it made me very miserable too.

I mean it's been like 8 or 9 years or something but I don't really have a feeling to get another dog even though I love dogs... the dog we had wasn't because we wanted a pet, he was a guard dog at first but grew into the family like we had known him for thousands of years and he had one helluva character!

So stay strong, friend! Life is an endless circle of letting go of things, isn't it

This is one of many things that puts me off from getting a dog. You get attached to them and they become part of the family but their short life span means you know that there will come a time, when they will no longer be a part of your life. It's hard to accept. :(

Did the vet ever consider this diagnosis?

I don't think there is a test to diagnose Cushing's, only tests to rule it out.  I had a dog that was treated for it for years, but we (the vet and I) were never entirely sure she had it.  She lived to 19.

Giving starving children food without changing the habits of the culture will only make the situation worse.   The more children that survive the greater the amount of aid required.

As to the OP.  Sorry for your loss.  If it has not already been suggested?  After a while why not go out looking for a new pooch.  No sense in saving an empty space in your life for mourning.  Fill it with another worthy poocher!

Be well, sir.

It's very sad when our pets die, but think about the great life he had while he was with you.

He was hilarious, although a bit over the top raunchy towards the end.

I had to look that one up.  Totally forgot about the circumstances.  I was thinking a John Belushi kind of death.  What ever happened to the other driver?

Brutal but truth.

Whole "give a fish, teach to fish' thing.

I've had a lot of trouble teaching fish myself.

You guys should get a galapagos tortoise as a pet they live up to 170 years so you are guaranteed to die before them so you dont have to morn anybody.

"You want to help world hunger? Stop sending them food. Don't send them another bite, send them U-Hauls. Send them a guy that says, "You know, we've been coming here giving you food for about 35 years now and we were driving through the desert, and we realized there wouldn't BE world hunger if you people would live where the FOOD IS! YOU LIVE IN A DESERT!! UNDERSTAND THAT? YOU LIVE IN A FUCKING DESERT!! NOTHING GROWS HERE! NOTHING'S GONNA GROW HERE! Come here, you see this? This is sand. You know what it's gonna be 100 years from now? IT'S GONNA BE SAND!! YOU LIVE IN A FUCKING DESERT! We have deserts in America, we just don't live in them, assholes!"
 ;D

vegas ???

i'm quite sure those poor fuckers he's sneering at didn't choose to live in a 'desert'.. only desert is what they get after successive years of drought.

now to stitch my sides up.

May he RIP. You have him a good life so let that give you some comfort.

There's no workout like digging a hole for a large breed dog. I just had to bury an English Mastiff a couple months ago.

If you own a dog over 100lbs RENT A BACKHOE.

Probably only about 150 bug fragments and 5 rodent hairs a month's worth.  :-X
