Platz was my favorite bodybuilder as a kid and first I ever saw on t.v. competing. Loved his book Pro Style Bodybuilding especially the part about visualization. He has aged pretty well.
-
what did his quads measure?
If the numbers below are correct, Tom would barely have been able to get my jean's waist size 31" - 32" over one of his thighs.
Tom Platz
Weight: 225 - 235lbs (102.1 - 106.6kg) - Height: 5'8" (172.5cm) - Thighs: 31" - DOB 1955

What body fat percentage did these early to mid-80s Mr. O contenders compete at?
-
Dude had to shop at Big and Tall for all his pants, shorts, etc then go to a tailor to bring the waist in like 10+ inches.
-
What body fat percentage did these early to mid-80s Mr. O contenders compete at?
I don't remember so much focus on body fat percentage's. Maybe it was all about how a competitor looked and not as much science. Then again, I was always trying to add weight and so it might have folks like me who didn't concern themselves with body fat percentages.

Are you sure? I'd be interested in seeing a couple of them. Do you have a link? I couldn't find any that were anywhere near that expensive. In the 60's, wouldn't silk be the fabric of choice? Polyester was a new fiber which was hailed as being inexpensive and wrinkle free. In the past, I purchased some rayon Hawaiian shirts which were hard to tell apart from my silk ones.

True. Like a lot of guys, he probably doesn't train at all now. We're getting old(er). ;D It is difficult, to say the least, to get into the gym and work out at this stage of life. ;D ;)
That said, he was someone I kinda looked sideways to when it came to leg training as the squat was my favorite exercise. The main guy I looked up to and respected for the squat was J.C. Hise, but Platz was kinda sorta a contemporary of mine and had a superb build.
But man...those legs of his were exemplary. He does look like a diminutive lesbian now...At least I don't. Yet? ;D ;D ;D

What age will Tom be around early 60’s - it doesn’t appear he’s doing much lifting
As he’s not carrying much muscle tissue.
That’s fair enough if he no longer wants to lift, it’s just how feminine he looks that
Gets me. !!
I’ve always liked Tom’s physique at his best - Shame about his Biceps tear.
As for his Legs I don’t think anyone has quite matched them yet.

Tom was born in 1955...so he will be 65 this year - later this year, if I recall correctly.
Tom did a photo shoot for MUSCLEMAG in 2008 [a replication of his 1987 shoot, where he was wearing the same sort of hat that Joey Jeremiah would wear in Degrassi High, which I thought was cool when I was a kid...but what do kids know about looking cool? And who cares how we dress, anyway? As long as people don't have horrible hygiene, I don't care]. I can't find these 2008 shots online [or the 1987 ones], but Tom's legs were massive then. In fact...people on here thought they were the 1987 shots when I posted them, but I had just bought MUSCLEMAG hot off the press the day before I posted them.
If Tom's legs were still so big in 1987 that people confused the pictures for those having been taken during his prime...it's safe to say that he probably still has decent legs know for pushing 65. I don't know that for a fact...but it wouldn't surprise me one bit. He just had once in a lifetime leg genetics.
-
Tom did a photo shoot for MUSCLEMAG in 2008 [a replication of his 1987 shoot {...}]
Found them!
I posted them in this Ironage thread from Getbig:
http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=282838.0
LOL @ the Ironage mini-dispute I had with pellius regarding the age of the pictures posted. It does go to show that Tom's legs were so good that people could have confused them for those in his prime - but if you look at the 2008 photos, I think it's clear his quads were not quite as full and round as they were from 20+ years earlier. But I can't fault pellius or anyone else for confusing the two.
As I said above...if Tom's legs looked like this at age 53, I strongly suspect that they would still look good - and not just for his age. I honestly think that Tom on hormone-replacement therapy and one leg workout a month would probably have bigger legs than 99% of the population. He is just a genetic anomaly for legs. I used to think he was below average in the upper body, which was exacerbated by his huge legs...but I think it's possible that his legs were just so big that they made his upper body look smallish by contrast. Not sure which interpretation regarding Tom's upper and lower body size disparity is accurate though.
Here are the 2008 photos of Tom Platz [age 53 at the time these photos hit the press]:
http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=282838.msg3999885#msg3999885
-
And here are the Ironage shots of Platz from, I believe, 1987. I can't recall the year with complete certainty. I wasn't following the bodybuilding scene in 1987, because I was five. ;D But my first guess was 1987, and psychologists say [or used to say, unless this has changed] that our first guesses/hunches are generally correct.
So I'm guessing these are indeed from 1987, where Tom would have been 32. I think Tom slimmed down in 1988, and did not compete that year [but narrated those "Battle for the Gold" Ironage bodybuilding documentaries]. So...1987 sounds about right. Maybe 1986.
While you can see that his quads were definitely bigger in these photos, it's not as if his 2008 quads at age 53 were small by ANY standard. Maybe they would be a bit slim for professional bodybuilding, but I would say honestly not by much. Tom was a genetic phenom for leg mass, and as far as I know - was absolutely balls to the wall in terms of training his quads.
Also, I enjoy the Ironage dispute I had with pellius here. ;D It's cool looking back at Ironage posts where Ironage Getbiggers clashed heads at times. :)

The amount of dbol that guy swallowed is mind boggling.
I always sort of assumed that based on his cheeks, but did he ever talk about it?
In his GMV.com.au "Golden Eagle" seminar DVD, he mentioned that he uses steroids and even went into some detail, I just don't recall him specifically mentioning Dbol.
-
platz says he's 5'8" 225lbs thighs 31 ins.
I believe he was shorter than that, I remember leaving Gold's in LA and some dudes were doing roman chair situps, I did a double take and one of them was platz! But he was short!
If you remember him as a slim bodybuilder, a bit bottom heavy, not much. It wasn't until the Universe in Mexico that he seemed to develop "arms", and that huge jaw/cheeks showed up.

Yes I agree, he was probably 5'8'' in his prime but after years of steroid abuse and heavy lifting and age he lost some height. I believe all pro bodybuilders lose on average about 2'' by the time they retire

There were two sets. These ones were published in MUSCLEMAG INTERNATIONAL in 2008:
http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=657649.msg9359237#msg9359237
These ones...date unknown. I assumed they were from around 1987, but wasn't sure [I just assumed they were from Tom's prime]:
http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=657649.msg9359238#msg9359238
If you look closely, you will see that these are from two different photo shoots. All I know is that the first set was published in MUSCLEMAG in 2008, and I assumed that is when they were taken. The second set...I'm not sure, and only took a guess that they were from 1987.
-
The second set is mine.
And I wrote the text for the piece, too.
It is 1994. Maybe ‘95. But I’m almost certain ‘94.
Correction: Zulie wrote the article. But I did the captions. That one for the lead-off pic, for instance, is mine.

Far from the best upper body overall.

That some won’t like.
-
Yes I agree, he was probably 5'8'' in his prime but after years of steroid abuse and heavy lifting and age he lost some height. I believe all pro bodybuilders lose on average about 2'' by the time they retire
^^
My Chiropractor who I have known (and worked out) with says it is from doing BARBELL Squats compressing the spine, over time it gets WORSE. He advised me early on to do
only hack squats, front squats, etc... However I am guilty of many years in the Army of doing Barbell Squats as that's what the weightlifter did in the late 80's early 90's!
-
Tom did not have pro level arm development. That ruined his look. If he had arms like Lee Priest he would’ve been Mr Olympia
^^
Then how come Chris Dickerson won the Mr. O with 15" arms???

Franco has no problems at all now.

Amazing legs!
-
Of course he does ...he abused his legs ...he demanded from his entire body more than any other bodybuilder ..... he tore a bicep for a reason and kept raining like a maniac long after .... bodybuilders never admit theyre in pain , specially joints
WoooSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
True, forgot about that.
Looking at his old training videos it looked like he had knees of titanium the way he was doing those leg exercises.

It's too bad they couldn't have fixed it better in surgery. Twenty years later bodybuilders got torn muscles repaired all the time but in the early 80's it was pretty much game over. A negative result of training too heavy.

I think it still havn't been much development in that type of surgery tbh. Very few surgeons can do it. Still to this day the have a hard time getting the tendon to fix to the muscle if it's torn of the bone. I believe Layne Norton had a succesful surgery on a tear of the muscle. But you don't see many.

According to Who ? Is that written in stone - Where does it say That Arms & Deltoids must be over developed & Disproportionately Large to all other Muscle Groups ?
The sport is BODYBUILDING then shouldn’t all Muscles be developed to the Maximum?
In today’s Era Deltoids & Arms are Overdeveloped & that’s accepted as ok.
In Arnold’s era it was Chest & Arms Being overdeveloped -
Isn’t it all down to what one prefers a physique to look like.
-
I only hope Tom was earning a good living and saving that money, I heard he lives in Scottsdale AZ involved in selling cars...
Who retired healthy enough to make a living out of bodybuilding? Arnold, Zane, Draper, Big Louie...

No.
That would for example mean maximizing the size of glutes and obliques.
Maybe you think that's the way bodybuilding should be, but I would disagree.

Not just 'selling cars' but living out his 2nd dream. I've recommended this before, but Tom's official website is a great read...

Platz trained like a man that legitimately had a gun to his head and they told him if he didn't give it 100%, he was a dead man!
With that said, I'm surprised he could walk after the age of 50!
I've always found it hilarious that people think you are an absolute expert in the field of weightlifting, as long as you are a monster who responds well to drugs.
Some of these guys train like complete morons, and people would be laughing at them if they were a 250lb slob who trained the same way. But since they are juiced to the gills and huge, people actually pay money to "learn" from them! LOL!
If you like that video, you are gonna fucking die watching this one! Skip to 7:00 to watch the funniest thing ever filmed in a gym!

I have difficulty choosing between Platz and Padilla. Both were robbed by Franco the "Sardine-Strongman" and Arnold.
Platz does seem intelligent too as did Bob Paris. Both spoke about steroids on camera and were relatively honest about their personal use but I really don't agree with Platz about the champions would still be the champions without their drugs. Some of those guys were PUNY when off. I saw some of them. They looked pretty darn regular to me. But back then the stuff was genuine and came from real pharmacies. I wanted so badly to look like Steve Reeves or Dave Draper. Not gonna happen, LOL!
And looking like prime Arnold? No freakin' way for me! ;D

You are right about steroids. That is just an excuse they use when called out about their usage. "Everybody does it so I have to as well. We would all still be champs if everyone was natural." Sure they would. ::) Most would not even train at all if they didn't have gear.

These days it really is all drugs. What did that kid Dallas have for a testosterone level when they did the autopsy on his genetically gifted corpse...55,000+? I don't feel sorry for people like that as they are even dumber than me. THere is an effective dosage for al medicnes but since the 90s or so, it's all about being ridiculously large.

Certainly Danny was also judged/ placed wrongly - I’d of had him in 2nd/3rd
Yes his build was very very good & his condition I think he was a little to light in body weight
Even for him. He looked great on his own just gave away to much muscular size.
As for the champs being champs with or without PEDs I’d say that would be a mixed bag
As clearly some have great structure & muscle shape as naturals & don’t gain as much
As others do from using them as they are hyper responsive to them.
Looking at the 1990 Olympia where they were supposed clean - More like reduced dosages
/ time off leading up to the Olympia & little to no diuretic use the physiques were smaller
Less detailed & softer looking. The “NO” Drugs thing soon got Dropped.
-

I’d say this that we are using The Internet is Very largely responsible for the Huge dosages
Along with the more is better principle & to a lesser extent the quality of underground lab
Drugs. You only have to look on the steroid board at the Absurd amounts some are promoting
& advising others to use 🙄 often times their drug schedule looks like an A-Z of a Chemists
Stock Room. How they supposedly afford all that amount & why they would take that amount
To “Look Good” I doubt any are competing at a National/ international level or Pro level as
If they were they’d plaster their pics all over.

It was apples and oranges but Franco won

Same here. Platz was much bigger and freakier overall. His pecs were thick as hell and his back was killer. On the other hand, Danny was perhaps the most shredded guy in the show and his proportions were *perfect*. He didn't have Tom's monster quads, but his legs were diced and he had much better arms IMO. By the FAIR judging criteria of the time, I would probably go with Padilla, with Tom a very close second, Roy Callendar (sp?) in third and Franco in fourth or fifth. Probably fourth because, apart from diced legs, Chris Dicksucker had a terrible, terrible upper body. Franco had a bitch tit and sausage thighs, but his upper body was otherwise pretty fucking thick and impressive -- and he had calves. Chrissy probably had better calves still, but I reckon Franco still beat him.

Yeah. Some deflated to an insane degree when off. In fairness, they also often said they stopped training altogether as well. In my experience, if a moderate user goes off the drugs and still lifts somewhat intelligently, he can maintain a reasonable facsimile of his former physique, albeit typically fatter and weaker.
Heavy users going totally off might be different, but I was never a heavy user and I only have second-hand accounts to go by.

1981mo ;D

Joe Weider messed up the bodybuilding scene. We had the long running Mr Universe contest in London. Joe had to have his version. Well, what title could be bigger? None. He came up with the Mr Olympia nonsense that doesn't have any meaning for non-
bodybuilders. Can anyone imagine what it was like in the late sixties and seventies? Both Arnold and Sergio started winning mid sixties and dominated the seventies. What did Joe do? Well, having a white guy on magazines sold more copies and products. Thus,
they found a way to ban Sergio. When he was reinstated it was 1984 and he was still great but not the best. For most of the seventies Sergio competed in non-IFBB contests. So much for Joe wanting a contest for the top champs. All bullshit.
Anyway, by 1981 it was an open field for the bodybuilders. No Sergio or Arnold. The fact that Franco won in 81 is a real shame but typical of the IFBB. Controversy after controversy. Who picked the judges and how responsible were they? A good question.
So the IFBB remained a business a bit like professional wrestling. You pay your dues and you get rewarded. Things didn't improve until 1983.
-
I guess it's human nature to want to be the best and dominate your field even if it's not best for the sport. I see Joe Weider much the same as Vince McMahon.
-

Oh, you did "extensive" research. Well, I guess that settles that. And exactly what was involved in this research? You watched the footage? Were you there in person? And, btw, and I mean no insult, but who are you? What makes you an authority? Tom was "all legs and that's it."? Really?
Here's what Rick Wayne, a real professional bber and someone who analyzed and wrote about bbing shows for a living, that was actually there at the contest said in a great article he wrote about the contest"
"I’d received advance warning from my spies in Santa Monica to watch out for a new Torn Platz, but I’d dismissed that as the usual bodybuilding hyperbole. Imagine my surprise when Tom showed up with not only extraordinary thighs and calves, but also with arms, chest, and shoulders that brought the house down every time he displayed them. In previous competitions his biceps and triceps had been especially weak. Somehow, for this contest Tom Platz had acquired precisely the look Olympia fans live for."
This is the full article and another example, as those from that time era will remember, why Rick Wayne was that best bbing writer ever. Too bad we don't have this kind of writing and commentary today.

From those pics it's Platz. But the Mr O contest was never about the best physique anyways.
-
Joe Weider messed up the bodybuilding scene.
Things didn't improve until 1983.
one of the best interviews ever. I believe him. some might say he´s bitter but i think there is truth to it all.

Actually, me. Multiple sets with 515 lbs to 535 lbs. The only exercises I was strong on were those for the legs. I was introduced to the milk and high rep breathing squat routine of J.C. Hise by some powerlifting friends because I could not gain weight and get stronger doing what I was doing in the gym. It took nearly 10 years to reach that level of strength.
I met Platz and watched him squat. He went ass to grass and I went parallel or just below. Legal in a competition (which I never entered) but then I was 6' 1.5" and he wasn't. ;D He was much better built than I. Nice guy too.

Well that is irrelevant because half reps doesnt count.

Yup. It worked like nothing else I've ever done. I hated leg work prior to that because what I was doing was doing NOTHING for me, LOL! ;D
J.C. Hise's routine was brutal but literally changed my physique. I was stronger in all my lifts and became quite large compared to most folks, but was never a great bench presser or deadlifter but still kinda strong on them.

I always did the squats last instead of the beginning or middle of the routine like the book said. I would do all the upper body stuff, rest 5 to 10 minutes and then do the final set of squats...... then collapsed on the floor.

For me, leg day as just that: Legs. For "fun", after a set of squats I would get up on a bench and jump off. Dumb, I know but it was kinda stupid fun to just jump and when I hit the ground, collapse on the floor. I never gave a thought to the possibility of hurting myself doing that. Stooopid. ;D

Also because your joints gets lubricated with joint fluid.
Going heavy on legs without proper warmup is like revving an engine to the rev limiter cold, ie. not oiled and lubricated cylinderwalls and bearings.

I stood next to him when he was approaching the stage to guest pose at a contest I went to watch. Yes, he is short. But man- the most complete physical build I have ever seen. Nothing stood out - he was so balanced it was unbelievable. And he is a funny guy too. Put on a great show.

Hi illuminati - hope you are well?
And glad you enjoyed it. Apologies - I could have been clearer - it's not the content that I didn't like, it's Rick's 1990's camera and video editing 'effects' LOL. I mean - it looks like it was filmed on a flip phone so on a big HD monitor like I use it's almost like watching a VHS bootleg - the lack of definition almost gave me a head ache - that was my angle

I think this is a very valid viewpoint. The only other really short guys with (close to) immaculate symmetry in his 5ft category that I can remember (IMHO) were Thierry Pastel and Momo Benaziza. Apologies to Lee Priest, but his limbs are too short and torso too long

i know this will upset alot of you. But back in the day bodybuilding was more than just size. They had to have proportion and symmetry as well as muscle and definition. And they had to pose well. Now days they are just big huge gutted blobs of crap and thats what wins. So looking back tom was massive. pictures never do him justice. You have to have seen him in person. he was as wide as he was tall ( maybe 5ft 6 ) but tom was not symmetrical nor was he proportionate. he tried to bring up his upper body to match his thighs but couldnt. look at him from the front. His legs are wider than his shoulders. He would of been better to shrink his thighs and then his upper body would of better matched ( much like his universe win. still not great symmetry but better) Tom was an amazing bodybuilder for sure and he took intensity to a whole new level. Also you gotta remember that franco was the only person on stage that was a mr olympia. And that means you already have an advantage as the person to beat and you do get special consideration ( of course being arnolds buddy helps to) In my book danny padilla should of won. That man was always flawless( and got cheated in pumping iron to make room for mike katz)

Just look at the pics above your post. Franco had gyno and no legs. He was nowhere close to Platz. Franco in '76 was much better because he hadn't had the leg injury yet.
-
from the front franco wins. shoulders wider than thighs. yes francos thighs were not cut up but he never really did have "diced" thighs) ( gyno yes but how many did coleman win and he had terrible gyno) but from the back tom kills everyone that day. from the side its a toss up in some poses. gyno didnt count against people then ( and doesnt today) does anyone remember when the ifbb instituted the rule that having tattoos would bring your placing down? I had never heard of anyone getting lower placing because of tattoos though. Again i am not knocking tom. Ive met him several times both when he was competing and afterward. Great guy. even arnold had said that tom was gonna take over from where he left off. ( but it never happened)

Sometimes a single bodypart, a major one like legs, can be so bad that it pretty much moves them immediately to the back of the line. From the front, Franco loses to Platz and Padilla in every aspect. His glaring gyno and his underdeveloped, unconditioned, bow-legs just throws everything off. Even from the back, his strong suit, is overwhelmed by Platz in every respect.

Yes, Franco really looks out of his league in the FLS comparisons with the two best in the show. Padilla is so flawless and Platz just overwhelming. I've vacillated back and forth over the years tending to favor Platz but as I've gotten older, I find that I am appreciating the more proportionate symmetrical type of physique and now favor by hair, Padilla. Especially when he is standing alone. When he stands next to Platz it's a lot harder because Danny is so short and Platz so dominating.

Muscle memory is real.

Not sure juicing at his age is a great idea. But whatever live and let live I guess.

1995 tom ;D
-
Muscle memory is real.
Yes, but at a certain age it must forget or we would never lose muscle as long as we keep training. Arnold still trains. Even hardcore oldsters like Robby Robinson and Tony Pearson are at full on and they are nowhere near the size they use to be.

You have to lose muscle as you get older. The ones that don't, die early.

That's what I think. His face is puffy again. It wasn't like that in past training seminar vids.

How did he lose to Franco???

How did he lose to Franco???
Beyond Me. Platz a clear Winner - Danny was fantastic on his own - lacked to much size against Tom.
-
Whilst I agree with posters opinion of modern bodybuilding and also the opinion of old day bodybuilding, but Franco still got a gift that day, Both Padilla and Platz were better as were others in the line up, this wasn't Arnolds comeback in Australia whee Arnolds symmetry and shape can be argued at least, Franco didn't have that shape and symmetry, his body didn't flow like Padilla and he didn't have the condition of Platz, it was a gift and IMO a bigger one that what Arnold received in Australia, I think its the moist controversial olympia win ever.

How did he lose to Franco???

Any one seen the '82 scorecard? It had to be close.

Everyone in the lineup got robbed by Dickerson's "victory". After Franco's farse in '81, Dickerson is easily the WORST Mr. Olympia ever.

I think personally Samir should've won

I
Bro, I would argue that Dicksuckerson's win was even worse. At least Franco was competitive in the upper body. Chris had shit arms, a torn pec, asymmetric abs, pointy elbows and he was too small. He had great calves, a good back and sliced quads. Whoopee :/
Zane and Casey should have defeated him with ease -- Tom, too. Samir probably deserved the overall.

ok here goes. Tom was a hell of a bodybuilder. probably no one trained as hard as he did. NO ONE. now tom didnt always train like a maniac but he did while trying to bring his upper body up to par with his legs. His legs being his (obvious) best bodypart. Tom was massive. ( and short) But he had no proportion or symmetry . In a few poses he looked great but standing front his thighs were wider than his shoulders. He looked weird. remember this was during the time when it was really BODYBUILDING as a sport an art form etc. he just didnt have it. Im not knocking him he was a great bodybuilder and actually a pretty decent guy to talk to ( i have talked to him personally a few times) But then it wasnt judged like now. unless you uhave ever seen him in person in his peak you just cant imagine how huge he was. BUT he just didnt have the correct flow the proportion or symmetry to win.

Didn't have the flow and (lack of) muscle of Chris Dickerson?

In this pic tom looks great but his lats and shoulders still dont match his calves and legs. Tom had certain poses he was unbeatable in. But shows then were not judged on just certain poses or who was the biggest. Look at him standing from the front. Can you honestly say he looked symmetrical? Proportional? Lmao. No way. Dickerson should of never won any show. He had nothing. I never understood how they kept giving him show after show after show. If there was ever any injustice to bodybuilding shows it was having dickerson win.
-

Dickerson was/is gay so maybe he was more inclined to earn his victory in the hotel room the night before with some judges.

No. By 1980 they only had 1 division. Previously hey had under 200 lbs and over 200 lbs.

Playing Devils Advocate
Who decides what symmetry is as it relates to the human body - Symmetry from right to left yes
Only what is symmetry from front to back or upper body to lower body.
EG,. Is Phil Heath with them huge arms & delts & small pecs & narrow shoulders -
Arnold Symmetrical with those huge arms & Thin legs - & they both won multi Olympia’s

The judges do not judge symmetry consistently. Many times they score their favorite bodybuilder the highest in every category. How did Bob Paris ever lose to anyone in the symmetry round?

No - just an illusion as he stood on stage:

That doesn’t answer my point as to what is symmetry as it relates to a human body.?
I don’t see bob as being any better than quite a few others with similar type physique
And he certainly had a decent physique - I’d say very well balanced.

There is no consistent standard to symmetry. It's whatever each judge thinks it is.

Then you’ve answered your own question to why Paris didn’t win the symmetry round.
There is not physique that symmetry applies to.

I was pointing that out as a negative to the judging. There definitely should be a standard.

I look at a physique and if nothing stands out then thats symmetrical.
I think they used to have some measurement, arms matching calves and neck, a specific difference in waist and chest and quads.
I think it was in the book Pumping Iron, I think Steve Michalick came closest but he didnt look very symmetrical onstage

Yes I believe it was also from Greek ideal as well as Steve Reeves type physique
“The golden age physiques”
I’m playing devil’s advocate.
let’s take Phil with huge overdeveloped arms & small chest & narrow shoulders yet many
Say he’s symmetrical- Same as Arnold huge upper body & slim legs
Yet many also critique Tom for his Legs 🙄 🤔
I think it comes down a lot to personal views & likes.
The Definition of Symmetry in the dictionary can’t really be applied to a body builders
Physique as all body parts have different maximal growth size
As long as The 2 arms / 2 legs / 2 delts / etc match Each other in size & shape
Then those individual body parts are symmetrical.
