Why?
Globally the industry is worth approximately $94bil with 210,000 clubs and 183mil members, this doesn't include all of the other related industries within fitness. The US market alone with almost 40,000 clubs, 62.5 mil members and is estimated at $32billion.
For the purposes of physical and ESPECIALLY mental health, this industry should be deemed "essential”. Just a small example would be the recovering alcoholic or drug addict that turns to the gym as a way out and to help keep them out of alcoholism or drug addiction. There are people like this in every gym in America.
What the Government doesn't deem a "essential" business for some is an ABSOLUTELY essential for others, not just for the economy's sake but for people's health and peace of mind. What you'll likely see during this pandemic and this is just from not being able to workout (define that any way you want),
Depression, anxiety, IMMUNE SYSTEMS getting weaker, mental breakdowns, going back to old habits (ie; drinking, drugs, etc), increase in domestic violence, possible suicide (a combination of the current situation, economy, family problems, etc) there has to be a relief mechanism, the gym Is usually it.
Bottom line is if the business follows the mandated guidelines such as social distancing, no more than 10 people at a gathering, disinfect equipment before and after use and regulating, on a time block of how many people can come in per hour or every two hours or whatever the owners and management decide, keeping the facility clean on an hourly basis then there shouldn't be a problem.
Of course, a grocery store is a necessity, but most stores are not regulating how many people come in or out, the only story I've seen do this on the daily is Trader Joes. It's hard to make the argument that a grocery store (as an example) is cleaner than a well ran gym.
This BS that makes little sense has gone on long enough.

Coach melting down?
It’s going to go on even longer ;D

How about instead of being a smartass that usually has little to contribute, how about civil discussion...or just don't post in this thread.

You will get no arguments on this from me.
The only downside is you would have the mainland Chinese sitting in the sauna and steam rooms for hours on end.
-
I agree coach. How long have we heard how exercise is critical to our well being ? At least 50 years. And the first chance they get, governments shut down gyms, trails, you name it. Ironically viruses get destroyed in fresh air and sunlight.
-
Coach what did you do with all your equipment from your gym?
Was it all sold? Leased?

This bullshit that makes little sense has gone on long enough.
It must be especially tough with that contest coming up, knowing that some contestants have access to pretty damn good home gyms. And some don't.
-
have you written to Mr Trump about this yet - might be more effective than yabbering on here ?
Yeah, nice try. These decisions were handed off to state and local governments. I was going to add in something for the nevertrumper and libs that like to blame him for everything until you realize that these people arent' intelligent enough to reason with. Hope that helped!
-

I would still win but I'm not showing up to a show looking half assed.
-
I severely miss the gym, with that being said a gym is probably one of the most bacteria infested germ laden environments a human can enter.

I'm sure the show will go on without you ;)

It won’t be going on without him.
Do you even lift bro?
-
I dont agree with it either and it reminds me of prisons where they have removed equipment as they dont want the inmates too big and strong, plenty of government types especially democrat types would prefer low testoerone left thinking skinny liberals for the population.
-

There’s still 15 weeks until the Nationals but I have a feeling it’s getting cancelled anyway. I’m still dieting and doing cardio.

I'm sorry that you're taking such a financial hit, but I cannot grasp my head around the idea of a gym being a necessity.
Most gym goers do it for vanity purposes. The amount of people doing it for health reasons must be quite small.
-
I severely miss the gym, with that being said a gym is probably one of the most bacteria infested germ laden environments a human can enter.
Being bacteria infested can be absolutely controlled, depends on the owner, cleaning schedules and staff. My facility were 90% athletes, we had 65 yards of indoor turf that was also 20 yards wide.
Warm-ups, speed work, etc were all done before coming into the weight training area and they were sweating like pigs but every hour before and after sessions equipment was wiped clean and the plates and heavy equipment were sprayed with Lysol 2-3x per day and at closing.
-
There’s still 15 weeks until the Nationals but I have a feeling it’s getting cancelled anyway. I’m still dieting and doing cardio.
Cardio ain't gonna get you those peaks.

Appreciate it but we don’t have the gym anymore so the only financial hit we’re taking is in the markets and apparel is down a little.
You’re right, some don’t consider it necessity but I would probably say that most that have been training and use it as an “out” do. Some of what I wrote might have been out of selfishness but the sincerity with everyone else is real.
-
Cardio ain't gonna get you those peaks.
No, but it will help me stay lean.

Lol....don't buy into the cardio myth.

New underground gym industry could start , just like garage barber shops .
-
Lol....don't buy into the cardio myth.
Not a myth. One horribly constructed study was published by the NY Times and now it's accepted as Gospel. If you want real research look to Kenneth Cooper's 52 year research. I could have 800 studies and with one opposition study people walk around like they know the valid truth. It reminds me of the anti vaccination crowd.

If I owned a gym I would be more concerned about liability of being open right now.

There are plenty of body weight exercises you can do without any equipment

It’s not essential for most people, including you. You’re muscles serve no purpose other than your vanity.
You’re not a soldier, cop, firefighter, etc. You don’t need to be built, it’s not necessary. Are they going to open up LA fitness for 2 people at a time? No.
Maybe go outside and walk? Get some fresh air.
If your mental state is teetering on being able to pick heavy stuff up and put it back down, you’re already fucked.

Classic Getbig in this thread.
Anybody who workouts and can’t access a gym is suffering in someway.
Coach is a guy who actually works out, in addition to several benefits he mentioned it’s obviously a release for him. And everyone is telling him why his gym use is an “addiction” and he needs to move on.
LOL I love this place.
You can’t win.

Kenneth Cooper?? Lol...he was debunked years ago. You look at a marathon runner and then look at a lean Olympic lifter who nails his diet. Duh....

I’m beginning to really hurt without my lifting.
Non-stop since ‘85, and now this.
Pushups, etc. only go so far.
Fucking COVID. Asshole chinks.

Fair enough. I know cops, firefighters and other people in civil service that can’t workout either. We all go for walks, I walk along our boardwalk almost everyday, take my dog for a 30min walk everyday, take walks with my wife everyday. I live on a beach. My house is 30 yards from the sand, I get PLENTY of fresh air and so do others, that’s still can’t replace a gym workout. We have Parkinson’s clients who rely on the gym, we have rehab clients that also rely on the gym...what about those people?

Go buy into a personal training studio for a few months the owner will need a partner for the duration off the lockdown and I'm pretty sure you will be able to train in a gym you own even if its closed
-
Gyms should remain closed. This silent killer is abundant in the gymnasiums. Get over it.

In my neck of the woods we call it "lifting weights". Go buy a fucking bench and a barbell and stop your bellyaching.

Getting the parkinsons angle in there, I like it.
Are you hormonal dependant?
You sound like your going cold Turkey.
Theres thousands dying literally, it's not about the gym right now.

The Parkinson’s clients should continue to take their medication. Rehab people are just going to have to pick up their rotator cuff recovery in a few months. I mean, is there anything they’re doing they can’t do ya home?
Cops and firefighters should be able to work out, no questions asked. If the shit hits the fan, we will need them at their best.
I agree that small, boutique gyms should have discretion, but normal gyms designed to get a pump on are not necessary.

I don’t agree. Muscles will atrophy if not trained regularly. Hypertrophy is also beneficial especially in older populations.
Large muscles might not be essential or necessary but it is false that they only enhance the ego.
-
We are all agreed gyms remain closed for 6 months.

All states shouldn't be treated the same. Obviously, New York is an exception. There's a real panic here in Hawaii because a third person has died and with a rise of 34 people in one day of those testing positive for the coronavirus bringing a total of 237 on an Island of about one million people. To put that in perspective 1/10th of one percent of a million is a 1,000 people. We still have a ways to go before we reach that level of fractional percentage.
In a couple of weeks, I'm going to start a writing campaign to all the gym owners in our state to reconsider opening up under the following conditions: Each entering member has to have their temperature taken. This is easy with those point and shoot thermometers and is being used now when you go into some medical facilities. Also, every member has to wear a face mask and if you take it off while in the gym you will be expelled. This may seem like a hassle but not if you consider the gyms being closed entirely. There should be a team of employees constantly patrolling and wiping and disinfecting the equipment.
-
I have had to adapt I have a treadmill been running or walking on incline every day for an hr or more bought the resistance bands big ach recomended I’ll probably buy a angle bench and bow flex adjustable dumbbells
Sure it’s not bodybuilding but bodybuilding is mot essential to life most whores find a brad Pitt type of physique
Good enough

Train outside, there must be good Outdoor gym close to you . Pullups, dips, pushups & pistols can replace everything else.Bad luck for fat/heavy guys
who can't do bodyweights . Salty air kills germs + you live in tropics 8)

There are no outdoor gyms in my area or anywhere that I know of. Even if there is, you still would not be able to use them. I'm sure Coach would be at the outdoor gym in Venice if he could.
Of course, I adapt. I'm using the same equipment: dumbbells, bands (which are great) and bodyweight exercises, that I used when I was stuck at home during my knee replacement recovery. But this is all just fill in stuff and can't replace a decent equipped gym.
I bought three boxes of these bands. You can combine them to get some decent weight.
I also got a couple of these pull-up bars, one on the top and one of the bottom. You can do decent upper body movements with good resistance. If you stack enough bands (remember
I bought three boxes) you can even do some challenging stiff leg deads. For legs, I'm trying out Coach's 100 rep routine. I still can't do 100 reps of bodyweight squats so it's challenging for me.

Oh brother. Really? Are you one of these "if we could save only one life" then it all would be worth it? How many people die from communicable diseases every year? Think of all the lives we could save if we permanently close all businesses permanently?
(Not taking into account all the lives lost and ruined due to not being able to support themselves and their families).
An adult who has some experience in life realizes there are always trade-offs in life. And often it's not between good and bad but between bad and worse. If personal safety is your number one concern in life then you can cower in your man cave for the rest of your life if you have someone else that will support you.
The survival rate of the coronavirus is over 99%. The number of people with the virus currently here in Hawaii 1/100th of one percent. Say that number goes up to ten times that amount that is still less than than a fraction of one percent. The chances of a healthy person dying from it is minuscule. The chances of you catching it here in Hawaii is even far less likely.
I'll take my chances and be responsible for my own protection and take the appropriate protection strategies.

How old are you?
Hopefully young for your own sake.

How old are you?
Hopefully young for your own sake.
How old are you and do you still have a job?
It really doesn't matter because it wouldn't change my response because this illustrates the divide in this country and a person's world view. You have people on one side that likes to be told what to do and be controlled and taken care of by the government (which never works out) then you have the other group that believes in personal responsibility and prefers to make decisions for his own life. I weight the odds and make an educated decision that is not based on fear. I was in Walmart today and every single person that entered that store wiped their hands and cart with those sanitizer wipes the store provides. The vast majority had face masks and or some kind of covering on their face. Beginning next week Walmart is going to limit the amount of people allowed into the store at one time. People's behavior has changed and they kept their distance. Even standing in line people kept their distance from each other. People like never before protect themselves from all diseases which in turn protects others. It is unprecedented in history that people from all walks of life have taken such dramatic changes in their behavior and personal hygiene. We are safer than ever from all communicable diseases than ever before. The people working at that store are in far more danger than I am but still they are there. Do you think they should stay home, too? That the much more substantial risks to their health are not as important to you so that people like you can shop and get the stuff you need?
Not everybody lives their lives based on fear and I take the necessary precautions to limit my risks such as wearing face masks, and always keeping my hands clean and not touching my face. I am also very aware of my surroundings and keep my distance from other people.

I forgot to mention that only three people thus far have died. Two were elderly and had preexisting conditions and one of them was not from Hawaii but came from the mainland. Three people out of a population of almost a million.

So, all these experts in the medical field and Dr Fauci are all wrong to panic? It’s just all a hoax, an agenda and they are just exaggerating the extent of all this? I mean people do everyday die from illnesses, right?

Kenneth Cooper?? Lol...he was debunked years ago. You look at a marathon runner and then look at a lean Olympic lifter who nails his diet. Duh....
http://corporate.concept1010.com/the-myth-of-aerobic-training/ (http://corporate.concept1010.com/the-myth-of-aerobic-training/)
Interesting article and website that I half agree with. I agree that we don't need nearly as much exercise as we are told but I disagree with the part about cardio being totally unnecessary.
For some anecdotal evidence I look at my results from cardio. A few years ago my blood pressure was ticking up so I decided to start up a cardio routine. I did cardio everyday until my BP was back to where I wanted it. I then dropped back to 3 days a week of cardio.....then 2 days.....then just 1 day a week and my BP stayed the same. Recently I took a couple months off from cardio and my BP started ticking up again. This time I just started doing cardio 1 day a week and soon my BP was back down. For me doing cardio just 1 day a week is all I need but it definitely does effect my BP.
I have also experimented with lifting and the frequency needed. Lifting only once every 10-15 days seems to have no effect on me maintaining all of my gains. I enjoy lifting weights so I lift more anyway but it's not required.

Yes, people do die from illness every day. Why would you think I believe this disease is a hoax? Did you miss the part when I said I wore a mask, keep hand sanitizer with me at all times, and I'm very aware of my surroundings? Where exactly has Dr. Fauci said to panic? We are taken precautions like never before.
Are you still working? Many people aren't and can't support themselves. That will cause more problems than the disease itself. How long should we shut down the economy? If you're so concerned about other people don't you think people who work in grocery stores and drug stores that are in far more danger than the average person should also be locked down? Or maybe the only people who should, according to you, put themselves in danger are those that can provide for you so that you can live comfortably?
Not every state is New York. I've given you the situation here in Hawaii. We are more isolated being in the middle of the Pacific ocean. We have quarantined the state. Everybody is taking unprecedented precautions. We don't have to shut down the entire state here for months on end. Three people have died here due to the virus, two of them were elderly and had preexisting conditions. That's out of a million people. There are far more dangers to a person's life here than the coronavirus. I took a bigger risk just driving to Walmart today than catching the virus. And even if I do, there is over a 99% chance I will survive. I like those odds. I am willing to take some risks and not shut down my entire life on the off chance that I will catch the virus which is a fraction of one percent. I take much greater risks every day just living a normal life.

How old are you?
Hopefully young for your own sake.
If you were born in 86 you are a child. Children always have liberal attitudes. Obviously youve not done much in life yet.

Why are you making it political?
Gyms should be closed as long as there is social distancing. Life and death, not political affiliations.

While we are at it we should ban sodas, there is absolutely no nutritional value in them and they lead to medical complications. They are not essential to life. Nor is any refined sugar. So in the interest of life that should be eliminated as well.
Let’s use this thread to create a deeper list of non-essentials, like any car that can go over 85 mph. Keeping lives safe is our focus everyone.

No one is saying it’s a hoax but what people are skeptical of is that the numbers don’t add up and a lot of this media driven and doesn’t warrant shutting down the entire countries economy.
Will Brink posted a video yesterday where average people and a couple of journalists went to different hospitals around the country just videoing where the media are calling “war zones” and there simply was no lines, no packed ER’s no packed ER waiting rooms. There was even a video that went viral showing a US hospital packed with sick people but the video was really of an Italian hospital. Why?

I still have some of my elite FTS bands in the garage, TRX, farmers walks handles and some full kegs. I’ll resort to some strongman work. Won’t help for bodybuilding but it’s better than nothing.

Workout at home to keep healthy, if you’re going that crazy after 2 weeks you probably have very bad body dysmorphia.
It’s already been 3 weeks that gyms have been closed in California bro.
-
Why?
Globally the industry is worth approximately $94bil with 210,000 clubs and 183mil members, this doesn't include all of the other related industries within fitness. The US market alone with almost 40,000 clubs, 62.5 mil members and is estimated at $32billion.
For the purposes of physical and ESPECIALLY mental health, this industry should be deemed "necessary". Just a small example would be the recovering alcoholic or drug addict that turns to the gym as a way out and to help keep them out of alcoholism or drug addiction. There are people like this in every gym in America.
What the Government doesn't deem a "necessary" business for some is an ABSOLUTE necessity for others, not just for the economy's sake but for people's health and peace of mind.
This bullshit that makes little sense has gone on long enough.
Oregon City Nautilus Plus gym owners agree with you. I just checked and they are continuing to stay open during their usual hours. Gyms were on Governor Brown's list of places to be closed until further notice. Not sure how the folks at that gym are getting away with staying open and not getting fined and or jailed. The last time I was there they'd taken several steps to insure social distancing, including taking every other cardio station out of service thus allowing approximately 6 feet between stations. Many members are wiping down equipment before and after using it. Staff is continuously sanitizing everything.
This gym is definitely a safer place to be than the grocery store where these measures are hit and miss. For example, some checkers are wearing gloves and masks and others not. As you mentioned there doesn't seem to be anyone regulating how many people can be in the store at one time. Yesterday, I saw a lady hold up her sweated over her nose when she sneezed. What a joke! A sweater doesn't filter droplets.
I'd still be going to that gym if I hadn't been getting so much shit each time I went from my family. I'd feel healthier if I went to the gym. If for no other reason than it would help with the boredom of being a shut in during this time.
My daughter is quarantined in the bedroom because she may have contracted COVID-19 from her physical therapist. She got on my case the other day because I didn't wear the gloves and mask my son-in-law gave each of us to use when we went out. The irony being that she is the only one of us who has any symptoms and may have the virus and she's telling us what we should be doing.
-

Or you feel that going to the gym is mentally healthier than being a shut in, regardless that you're exercising at home and staying is reasonable shape.

So you would selfishly run the risk of exposing others to C—19 because you want to “feel healthier” and you’re bored?
And your daughter has been quarantined for days, but no one even knows if she has the virus or not?
Do you ever stop to realize how stupid you sound? Do you realize that you are exactly the demographic that the virus kills? But in your senile mind your vanity outweighs safety measures implemented to stop the spread of coronavirus and return the country to normal day-to-day operation. Jesus Christ you’re a whiny little bitch.

rationalizations of an exercise addict
i would have written the same 5 years ago... sadly for us, 94 billion doesn't go far in a world where some old dude piled up 125 just to buy up some of that retail space during just such a "trying" time...

The stupidity continues. Necessary and unnecessary currently refer to how Covid 19 spreads. Gyms = close contact. This means Covid will easily spread in a gym setting. That's it. It's not complicated.
How is this hard to understand? Go do some god damn push ups and squats in your living room. Or go for a run outside.

Nothing new. The UN is a joke. The UN Human Right Council is laughable. The only thing consistent with that organization is how the majority of it is ruled by dictators and authoritarian countries: Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Rwanda...
The question is why are we even involved, and the main financer, of this travesty of an organization? It would be considered "hostile" and not caring about human rights by the rest of the world if we left that organization. If we no longer supported a international human rights organization it would send a message to the world that we don't care about human rights. So our Presidents just grin and bear it.
Just another little appreciated and already forgotten example of the greatness of our present leader is that in 2018 Trump ordered that we withdraw from that organization. Of course, you got the typical crying and whining from those on the Left here and the rest of the world except Israel (the most censored country by far. Not North Korea, not China, not Saudia Arabia... but Israel censored by far for human rights violation).
Just like with the Paris Climate Accord and the Iran nuclear deal, Trump does what is right and not what will make him more popular with our enemies.

I don't know about where you live, but where I live there are hoards of people at the grocery store who are clearly not isolating or they would be at home. The store delivers groceries or if you prefer, you can order ahead and they will put them in your car. Strangely enough, all the parking spaces reserved for this are empty.

The mandated guidelines don't ensure 0% transmission. 1 transmission at your gym could ultimately cost many lives.
And you're right about the grocery stores - but the regulation is coming.
Believe me, grocery stores are going to change in the next few months.
I still can't believe I'm not being served by people in hazmat suits.
I do feel for you, but ultimately - given the amoral way people are treating this (and the fact that even if they treat it seriously, society requires you to still go out to work and all that shit), it was for the best.
-

24, Powerhouse, Planet Fitness... all the gyms here are closed. And they are not charging you while they are closed so like every other business they are not taking in revenue and furloughing employees. So it's not just the gym members but the business as well that are suffering.
This cannot be sustained for long.

Cost many lives? Coronavirus is not a fatal disease to the vast majority of the population. The vast majority that gets sick don't require hospitalization. There is no such thing as 0% transmission. Nobody has required anybody to go to work ever. It is not amoral to care about people that need a way to support themselves and their families.
Do you still have a job?

Do you still have a job?
For the moment, yes.
We are switching to working from home in the next few days but I have still felt financial pressure to come in and do my job to keep my job.
Nobody is getting out of this situation unscathed. We're all going to pay dearly for this year.

You understand what an exponential rate does, though, right? Someone giving it to 2.6 people can easily be a problem after a few rounds of that.
Amoral as in, there are still a huge amount of people who don't think this virus really exists. Some think they won't get it. Some think it doesn't matter if they get it, they are fine.
Even if they don't think that, the rest of us are being put under a financial blowtorch, too. Business owners and employees alike. All under pressure to both earn our money, but not transmit this disease.
And coronavirus IS a fatal disease to a decent chunk of the population if enough of them get it to overwhelm the medical system. Hence, the unfortunate measures being taken. It would potentially be fatal to all of the 20% hospitalised if it gets that bad
-

So you have income coming in. I thought so. I've found that everybody that says that we should shut down for several months on end are collecting some kind of income. You would be singing a different tune if you had zero or lost 90% of your income and could no longer afford to pay your rent or mortgage or feed your family. There are many people that have to live paycheck to paycheck and just losing one month of pay is devastating.
Do you think grocery store workers should have to go to work, too? No, of course not. You'll make an exception for them and have an "amoral" attitude towards them because you need them to provide with things you want or need. You're willing to put their lives at risks and to YOU the cost of their lives is worth it to supply your needs.
It works both ways, my friend, and the same standards you want to impose should be the same for everybody.
-

It is not any more fatal than the flu just more contagious. It has over a 99% survival rate and those who do die the vast majority of them are elderly and have preexisting conditions. It is not a fatal disease and most recover just by rest and isolating themselves. Already 30% of the people here in Hawaii diagnose with the coronavirus have recovered without hospitalization.
And I don't know where you live but everywhere around me, people are taken unprecedented precautions to protect themselves which in turn protect others. As I mentioned before, when I went to Walmart yesterday I watched as every single person stopped when they entered the store and use the sanitary wipes provided to wipe down their carts and hands. Most had some kind of face protection and everyone standing in line respected the six feet rule. To say that a "huge amount" of people that don't think this virus even exists is just patently wrong. Even those that think it's exaggerated still acknowledge that it exists. People are actually getting sick. If anything there is a nationwide panic. It's all you hear about. Everybody is aware of it. The effect on this country, on the whole world, is like nothing ever before experienced in modern times. Our behavior in so many aspects has been changed forever. Just like 9/11 permanently changed our world this will even more so. To say a "huge amount" don't take it seriously doesn't comport with real-world experience. Shit, even homeless people here have those "do-rags" covering their face and I see many of them wrapping themselves up with plastic garbage bags.
And there is big, big difference between experiencing financial pressure where you have to cut back on things and not being able to put a roof over your head and food on the table.
-
I don't see the point in debating this much further - we're living it. The mortality rate depends on the country. Many cases are not yet finished and some countries *cough* china *cough* are probably lying, anyway.
I don't agree with what you said in the reply before your last, about what I'm thinking of course - I don't really like to "require" anything of anybody if I can. I don't enjoy taking a risk and going to work every day, either. Shit, some coworkers are bringing their kids to work. But what can I say? We're all trying to get by.
The gyms - they were doomed anyway - who would turn up to a gym right now? They could have left them open, wouldn't have made any difference.
-
So you would selfishly run the risk of exposing others to C—19 because you want to “feel healthier” and you’re bored?
I did not say I went to the gym, did I?
And your daughter has been quarantined for days, but no one even knows if she has the virus or not?
Since you asked, my daughter got the test results back earlier than the expected 5 days. She tested negative for COVID-19. The tests are 70% accurate. If she doesn't run a fever for 72 hours, she can come out of quarantine. There's nothing like exact science. ::)
Like I said, although I wish I could go to the gym and it is open, I have not.
If all I was risking was my own life, then what I did would be on me alone. Anyway, you've made it pretty clear that, for some incomprehensible reason, it would make you very happy if I died. Not that I plan on accommodating you anytime soon.

I went shopping at home depot and had to wait in line 30 seconds to get in. If home depot is open my gym sure as fuck had better be or I demand an explanation as to why no one is telling us how we can go abouylt working out. Two at a time? Must wear facemasks working out? Members can only workout specific times of the day?
I dislike being told get fucked by my elected representatives. Im ready to march on sacramento. Fuck this bullshit our powers that be dont know what the fuck theyre doing. I refuse to suffer in silence. If the virus is THAT MUCH OF A DANGER then shut everything down for 2 weeks and let us go back to our lives. If its not that bad (clearly it is not) then get the fuck out of our lives let us US WE THREE PEOPLE US figure out for ourselves what we should do and if the virus takes a bunch of us out time heals all wounds. Tomorrow was never promised to no one we all know that this world is a hostile place trying to prop us up on our couches in fear eyes glued to our televisions while we pig out on fatty foods- is that really what we deserve? I mean fuck.

Every member upon entering should have their temperature taken. They have these point and shoot thermometers that are already being used in medical facilities. All members should also have to wear facemasks. And workers should constantly be wiping down and sanitizing the equipment. In fact, there should be a disinfecting spray bottle near every other exercise equipment along with paper napkins so you can conveniently wipe down the equipment after use. I believe that most people will be aware and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves as well.
Educate people and makes them aware but the ultimate responsibility is with the individual and not some government entity.

So who what was your previous gimmick? How many times have you been banned? How many times have I butthurt you with your past accounts.
I know those procedure seems hard to you because you are a retard and functionally limited. They do these things anyway at Kaiser Permanente and other facilities. When the alternative is closing your business Americans can be very adaptable. And who is melting down because they can't train? We are all still training. You should try it, phaggot. And I'm flattered that you look at me and consider me a "juice monkey". I've already posted my blood test results. But it speaks volumes how horrible you must look.

How about instead of being a smartass that usually has little to contribute, how about civil discussion...or just don't post in this thread.
Bro this is why I do my things w the water cans , ruck , sandbags etc.
Can’t stop training.
This lockdown everything nonsense is going to end up w more death and destruction than the virus over time.

Aside from the temperature taking, this is pretty much what was going on at the gym a couple of weeks ago. Hardly anyone was wearing masks anywhere then, but this has probably changed. Why paper napkins and not paper towels? I've never seen paper napkins used at any gym I've been to.
(One thing about disinfectants is that their efficacy varies for a number of reasons. Most commercial disinfectants come in a concentrated form which is then diluted with a specific amount of water. These disinfectants degrade and should be refreshed pretty often. Another issue is that to work effectively a disinfectant needs a given amount of dwell time to kill bacteria, viruses and germs. Usually 5 minutes and up to 15 minutes. Using a disinfectant prior to using gym equipment is better than doing nothing, but it is not a guarantee that what you touch is germ and virus free. I recommend wearing protective gloves as an added precaution. Whatever you do, don't touch you face and thoroughly and frequently wash your hands.)
The government can request and even dictate what people do, but people will do pretty much as they choose anyway. Yes, the responsibility should lay with individuals. Unfortunately in this scenario, what individuals do or don't do affects all of us.

Hahah yes. I was just talking about this.
Would you rather be faced with the Shanghai Shivers, or be told you’re drafted to fight the nazis in 1944? I’ll take my luck with the virus to be honest.

Gyms are petrie dishes with people sweating and exhaling spit all over the place. You have large groups of people gathering in a confined area. There is no way they can stay open. We can't even have funerals these days. Prisoners manage to look good with very little. I think most Getbiggers can be creative and look much the same.

I'm surprised most here don't have weights at home. I've always preferred to work out at home. Even when I had a membership at Gold's I still had weights to lift out of the gym.

true, i trained at home for most of 50 plus years and only recently joined a gym, which might have lead to the worst year of my life. starting june 25, i haven't been able to train and have all kind of new incisions all over me. i'm months and maybe years away from feeling normal again if i survive the latest set backs. i'm not asking for pity, i could care less what a bunch of strangers think or feel about me, saying this with apologies to the good guys on here. i'm just saying maybe a commercial gym isn't the way to go for lifetime fitness.
-
coach-I’m sorry your gym is shut down. I’m doing the home workouts too. Good luck. -Gene
Hey Gene how are you making out during the pandemic?
I've got a home gym so I am able to workout.....pretty much stopped going to commercial gyms 2-3 weeks before the shit hit the fan around here
Stay safe!!!

Your gym was already turning into this before Corona Virus. Corona will accelerate the process with the sheer explosion of these guys when this is all over and people "gotta get back to working out". Hardcore gyms won't recover from this. Gold's already sold to Google and doesn't give a shit, and few businesses are going to start up again with a business model of hardcore, with the limited appeal and stigma.
Just become this guy. A douchebag. We will all be douchebags. I already am a douchebag. I didn't see it coming. It's the final step of our evolution into the perfect consumer in the globalist system that has rapidly advanced as a result of the virus, but was going to take place anyway. But different? Hard core?, Truly don't give a fuck? Barbarian Brother shit? These are traits not necessary for our consumption anymore. Douchebags are the market for your gym. Douchebags are Capitalist consumer evolution. You will become one. It is inevitable. The system dictates it so just become him now and you'll be ready for gyms post Corona Virus!!!!!
What the fuck does that have to do anything?
I DON'T GIVE A SHIT. I'M LOCKED IN MY FUCKING HOUSE GOING CRAZY.

Update: I've been posting that Oregon City Nautilus Plus continues to remain open. This is an error. I based this on their Yelp page which indicates they are still open. Apparently, Yelp is not up to date.
Governor Brown issued directive 20-12 listing businesses required to close. This directive included gyms and fitness clubs. I believe this was issued on March 27th. Since that time, the gym has complied and has been closed. As with other gyms they are not collecting membership dues during this time. Since my dues are covered by Silver and Fit, this does not affect me.
Retail businesses closed by Executive Order 20-12 include:
Shopping: Outdoor and indoor malls and retail complexes, although individual types of businesses not subject to the measures may stay open.
Fitness: Gyms, sports and fitness centers, health clubs, and exercise studios
Grooming: Barbershops, beauty and nail salons, and non-medical wellness spas
Our doors will be back open the minute we are given the ok. We wish all of our members and our community good health and we look forward to serving you all in the near future. You may still reach us by email: nautilusplusoc@hotmail.com

The gym business is risky so and how many will survive the closures? Many will be for sale in the months to come and gym equipment will be available as well.
The only reason why closed is because the sports facility we leased out of (120,000sqft and and our section was 17,000) is because the owners of the complex did not pay their lease for almost 2 years...the owners said nothing and we found out 4 days before the final eviction date.
Our lease was $16k not including the rest of our overhead. We paid, they didn’t. We closed with $227k in the bank they were insolvent.

OK, that makes sense. Often the landlord is always portrayed as the bad guy but people don't realize how hard it is and how much money is lost when a tenant doesn't pay the rent/lease. They know that they can drag it out and get months rent free until they are forced out.
Man, you guys got screwed. I wonder if any legal action can be taken. I mean, you paid, they didn't.

We had no recourse, by the time we lawyered up they filed BK. A lot of our seasonal income came from NFL Combine prep (averaged 14-18 players a year at $15k per athlete, do the math) and off-season HS, College and NFL prep. We couldn’t even sue for future receipts. We figured we had lost about 300-400k for the year

Agreed. Seems more like a bitter closeted gay man than a woman.
Jane er John actually reeks of self loathing homosexuality.

figured I would buy some dumbbells and a bench on line just as a stopgap measure. Came down to Bowflex selecttech 552 or Powerblocks. Turns out they are sold out everywhere. Selecttechs normally run around $300. Ebay folks trying to get double or triple that.

leave the gyms closed for another 3 months. we are all generally all in agreement here
-
Surprised many of you didn't see this coming re: equipment. I bought a power rack, a bench and some other shit as soon as I got wind of the shutdowns. If toilet roll was going out of stock, the sudden death of the workout was going to cause an insane hike in demand. You're talking about demand increasing probably hundredfold at least. The crash in prices of fitness gear after this will be similarly brutal.
The place that Lee Priest is affiliated with has a pretty good writeup of what his life has been like for a fitness supplier since this shit started.

There are quite a few in this thread who don't agree.
I agree that they probably have to be closed but I hate training at home. Even a 20kg plate feels twice as heavy at home. It's the place to relax, not lift shit.

This bullshit that makes little sense has gone on long enough.
Valid points, but with social distancing and stay at home orders in place its just impossible to open any heath club. The risks far exceed the gains.
Every store I have been to are using strict policy regarding distancing and number of customers. Granted some stores were behind initially but with so many cases have become more strict, thankfully. Exercise at home, you're better off, trust me.

It’s funny, after I wrote this my wife and myself went to grocery store (Ralph’s in my area) and really started observing how people act in the stores and observing the cleanliness of the stores. Floors are clean but not sure of their cleaning schedules (2, 3, 4x per day🤷♂️) then going to the freezer section, seeing how many people open and close the freezer doors, how often do people pick up a product, look at the label then put it back, is many adults, kids and children put their hands on the outside of the freezer or refrigerated section of say the meat section. I’m sure we can all add to this but I think you see what I’m saying.
Gym are full of germs, no doubt but their much more manageable to keep clean than a store.

Yup, that's for sure. I am gonna get out today and do some cardio fast walking the hills around my place. My blood pressure this morning was 127/79. I like to keep it lower, like under 120/75 and cardio helps accomplish that, plus it helps my body fat percentage stay at 12% or less.

Mask/gloves/hand sanitizer. Wipe all groceries down with disinfectant upon entering the home. Don't be in denial about Coronavirus. Because you will wind up on a respirator while I'm in my cellar on the weight bench. While you're struggling for one more breath I'll be struggling for one more rep.

Yep, we wipe everything down when we get home. We have an abundance of sanitizer, disinfectant wipes (3 cases), paper towels, TP, we even have 6 N95 masks.

I hope you get what you deserve.

I’m seriously so sorry too hear about this. How did the infection start and what’s your prognosis?
it was the strangest thing i was training at a commercial gym, my strength levels were their highest in 4 or 5 years {67 at the time] ijust finished off a long workout on a friday. did 20 minutes on both a treadmill and bike to cap it. went home swam a mile like i do every day in the summer after i was done i got the shakes lasted for hours thought i was shaking my joints lose. i went to the emergency room and started my journey on the medical merry go round. started june 25 and i just got out of the hospital saturday with the heart valve.
-
Funk, I am sending Mr. Vince Goodrum, CSN, MFT, HPP, CEO, to your home for a fully body massage with oil and scented candles.
You deserve a break and to relax.
aggghhhh god no, I've got enough problems. :D :D :D

Damn!! That’s scary. If it didn’t come on so quick I was going to say staph but it sounds like it came on quick
-
true, i trained at home for most of 50 plus years and only recently joined a gym, which might have lead to the worst year of my life. starting june 25, i haven't been able to train and have all kind of new incisions all over me. i'm months and maybe years away from feeling normal again if i survive the latest set backs. i'm not asking for pity, i could care less what a bunch of strangers think or feel about me, saying this with apologies to the good guys on here. i'm just saying maybe a commercial gym isn't the way to go for lifetime fitness.
Sorry to read about your tragic health over the past year. No pity, just knowing that "There, for the grace of God, go I". Hope you are on the mend now. Why do you believe joining a commercial gym had something to do with these health issues?
-
YEAH,,,AGAIN FUNK GOD BLESS ,,,REST ,GET WELL,BEGIN NEXT STEPS..

good read, you know your stuff this happened years back it was staph that time it necessitated 2 hip surgeries. this time it was strep. not as bad as infection but it also ate away the heart valve causing open heart surgery..

never had them before when training at home. it may have been caused by overextending myself, i always enjoyed working out and being in close proximity to too many toys probably caused over training draining my immune system to zero.

Are you saying we should close the grocery stores? ???

No, can’t remember which reporter it was that actually suggested that. Just saying stores are dirtier than most gyms

Okay, I don't understand the point you're trying to make. I guess grocery stores are dirtier than gyms?

Got it. I'll ensure extra precautions while shopping.

Gyms are a problem because people don't have their mouths closed.

Twaddle do you know how many hands touch a loaf of bread before it’s even put on the shelf?
I get it that a gym and a grocery store are 2 completely different environments BUT at a gym we are aware of how contaminated everything is. Items are constantly being touched and cleaned.
Consider that EVERYONE goes to the grocery store and they are not being constantly cleaned up after.
Up until recently you’ve probably never seen shelves or refrigerated areas cleaned regularly. Likewise you’ve probably never properly cleaned everything packaged item you’ve brought home.
A supermarket is as much a Petri dish as a gym is.
-
Gyms being dirty is not the problem.

The problem is a respiratory virus. I’ve been wearing a mask and disposable gloves in public for years. I’ve been preparing for this moment.
-
I want to try to just get stumps and logs to chop wood, etc - in the time being. I already to the sandbags, rucks, etc
You could get a job in construction and get paid to train.

Lol. Well done.
-
You can leave your canned goods and boxed food products in your garage for 2-3 days and the virus will dissipate. No need to wipe down.
Perishable stuff you can wipe if you have the desire before you refrigerate or store.

A Bodybuilder/musclehead with no gym is like an ant without a hole on the wall …………….
No life
WoooSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH LE VRO NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEE

You asked this:

I explained why a grocery store is, in all likelihood, dirtier than a gym.
Sorry.

When did being dirty become a bad thing ???

Sorry.
I see. We can all agree now, that grocery stores are dirtier than gyms. Thank you, I will take extra precautions when shopping for groceries.

Keep in mind gyms have bathrooms, the amount of urine and fecal matter on the floors, weights and machines is scary. The perspiration on the machines and benches doesn't help matters. Yes, grocery stores are not the most sanitary of places but no comparison to a gym. Just my opinion is all.

Let us also not forget what Tom Prince was rumored to do in gym bathrooms -

started with kidney problems-non gym related, next was an infection necessitating two hip replacement surgeries, next in the litany was open heart surgery caused by an infection that ate away a heart valve. i'm months and maybe years away from seeing the light at the end of the tunnel if there is one. the sad part was i was having some of my best workouts up until the problems hit. thanks for your concern pellius i remember you from ironage yet.
Jeeze, talk about getting knocked down over and over. Stay strong, my friend, it's your only option. Man, the randomness of life is so disconcerting. People that don't give a second thought to their health skate through life forever and then some just get hit over and over again.
-
Okay, what is your point? That we should close supermarkets? ???
People seem to be focussing on touch, here yet, most of the effort is in distancing yourself away from people's airborne contaminants. It isn't hard to wash your hands. I think we all got the memo on that.
If 1.5-2m is the rule for someone at steady respiration, what is it for someone who is huffing and puffing and moving around, possibly creating currents?
If supermarkets are dirtier than gyms, which would you take? Briefly coexist a supermarket with someone who is afflicted or spend an hour in the same gym as someone who is equally so? I'll admit, if you walk past someone in an aisle, you're effectively spending quite a bit of time in their wake, so there is an argument to taking the gym - but you're in the gym for a lot longer and you really should only be going to a shop once a week, if that.
I'm not even remotely concerned about touch. Touch is something you can control. Touching a freezer door is moot - wash your hands as soon as you leave, before you get in your car. That's gone.

Some people would argue that a grocery store which sells food and other necessary items is more essential than a gym where you work off the calories you picked up with the food you bought and ate.
When shopping, wear disposable gloves and dispose of them along with whatever germs they picked up when you leave the store.
-
The “essential” shouldn’t really have anything to do with what’s the cleanest. Groceries you can’t live without in most places. Gyms - not really essential to life.
Coach - I agree with you most of the time and I know it sux, but I can’t agree here. Fortunately I am able to work from home - and I bet MANY more businesses will be moving to that model. With AR coming - there just won’t be a need for most offices.

I've been training differently - but still training. Heavy Ruck marches, boot camp type stuff, etc.

So what .. hospitals are even dirtier than both.
I will say, it is a total joke to see the types of businesses considered essential. Either do it right with a proper lockdown or keep everything open. Half-assed measures like what we're doing are gonna kill the economy without saving many additional lives.

California gym owner is re-opening, says shelter-in-place order is unconstitutional
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The owner of several gyms in the Sacramento plans to re-open Friday despite the governor’s stay-at-home orders.
Sean Covell, who owns three "Fitness System" franchises, announced the decision to his members this week.
His attorney, Brian Chavez-Ochoa, believes the restrictions imposed by the government during the pandemic, are a violation of the Constitution.
"This is government overreach, and under the First, the Fifth and the 14th amendments of the United States Constitution, we have a constitutional right to do exactly what we’re doing,” he said.
Ochoa Chavez said that all three locations will be in compliance with the CDC's social distancing guidelines -- and he says that the gyms will be cleaned every hour.
Earlier this week, Gov. Gavin Newsom said that gyms will be among the last businesses to get the all-clear in reopening, and he didn't give a date as to when California would be ready for this to happen.
The gym owner is not the first to defy shelter-in-place orders, which have stopped the spread of coronavirus but which have also crippled the economy.
A Vacaville hair stylist reopened this week saying she'd rather get a $1,000 citation rather than suffer the $15,000 in lost revenue she's already experienced. Bars and other salons have also decided to reopen. Protesters took to the streets in Sacramento, demanding the governor ease up and let people go back to work, despite the fact that California has been successful in flattening the curve and avoiding huge death tolls with its strict quarantine measures.
This week, the Bay Area Council released a survey saying that 71 percent of the businesses surveyed wanted to be back at work in the next month.

Stay at home orders will be lifted in Missouri Monday May 4th. I'll finally get to back to the gym.
