Post by: Gym Rat on August 27, 2023, 05:28:52 AM

Rainy day around here and I can do much anyways with the recent disc issue flare-up...

Also check out the channel "Flick Connection" on YT for more ideas.

I used to look for hours trying to find a flick at times.....these channels have helped.

Some suck, but you find some hidden gems quite often.

Not a movie but "Ragnarok" on Netflix is a good show if you don't mind dubbed dialogue.  Third/final season is out (nh) now.

Watch an old classic movie you have seen before
All now movies are revenge movies because someones killed a blokes wife or kidnapped his daughter
Another plot is some housewifes memory gets triggered of a past life as a secret agent and she sent out to kill the entire Mexican cartel

I watch "A few Good men" the other day, they dont make movies like that anymore

PS, every single movie you ever see will follow one of these seven plots

Overcoming the Monster. The protagonist must defeat an antagonist (usually an individual, force, or entity) that threatens them and the wider world.

Rags to Riches. ...

The Quest. ...

Voyage and Return. ...

Comedy. ...

Tragedy. ...

Rebirth.

the first on that list covers every single martial arts film ever made

.....or you get....."Five teens decide to spend a week at one of their uncles cabins in a desolate part of the forest"

I watch a lot of old movies as well as new ones but they use a format up like it`s the only idea they have en masse.

I watched "Heartbreak Ridge a couple of weeks ago.......great flick.

If I see a flick over to soon I can`t get into it but it had been quite a while since I saw it.

I can always watch "The Omen" !

Watched Mission Impossible 2 the other day, its the only one I will watch, the rest of them became spoof comedy shite after the second one
Cruise and Newton have great on screen chemistry and shes unusually hot

Even the first one had a stupid pathetic Brit as a train guard fainting in the back of the train.
Spoiled the entire movie

They enlisted stupid fucking Simon Pegg and he ruins everything hes in.

I also recently watched The Anderson Tapes - great caper movie, and First Men in the Moon - a similar period piece to the James Mason ones in your list

I also found a stitched together version of the 80s mini-series Salems Lot - that still hold ups well

Great films and I think I have seen "Open Range" about 44 times in the last couple of years!  My favorite film of all time is the "Director's Cut" of "Kingdom of Heaven"(2005) followed closely by "Quo Vadis" (1951).

Some more great films:

"Sullivan's Travels"

"I Married a Witch"

"The Outlaw Josey Wales"

I mostly view films from many years ago and the movie "Sullivan's Travels" sums up why - I do not want Hollyweird trying to "teach me" anything.  I want to forget the real world for a couple of hours and get lost in a good film.

Yeah I watched it twice in the 48 hour rental window. I’m usually not up for movies much past 80-90 minutes but it didn’t seem like that long. I love movies like this, they elicit quite a reaction from me. My wife and kids here me flipping out and jumping around when I get pissed at these scumbags taking little kids like the opening scene.

Might try "The Burning" if you like "Friday The 13th", it has a similar vibe -

.

Not sure if it will play in the Uk, but you can watch it in great quality here for free - https://tubitv.com/movies/486577/the-burning .

Also that Tubi free tv service has some surprisingly good films on offer.

Also, if anyone wants to try it, here's "Fight for Your Life", a pretty good Blaxploitation/Hicksploitation/Escaped Convict film from the 1970's -

.

---------------

These are a couple of fun ones too -

Devil Times 5 -

.

Bus with institutionalized deranged kids crashes in a rural town, and they go berserk on the towns's people.

----------------------

Chopping Mall -

.

Robot security rages on teens trapped inside the mall with them.

Thanks, man. Nice. I'm rarely ever in the UK these days so it should be fine. I'll probably stick them both on for Halloween with the girlfriend before I fuck off again. Needed some good ones to watch that don't have demon possessions and stupid nuns with black eyes leaping out. Can't be assed shitting myself again.

I remember Rickman nailed it, just like always. The guy who misses his friend Andy reprised his role as a magic negro, and Slater's Will Scarlet seemed to have been left in the editing room. I trust you dug The Costner's occasional efforts to affect an accent approximating something vaguely Britishey?

I preferred Crowe's "Beefcake of Thieves." Costner's only good role was Bull Durham, alongside Susan "ya got any coffee" Sarandon and Tim Robbins. Great flick.

One of the GOAT movies. If that film is gay, then put me in a woman's thong and call me Hankins. Canada's greatest man Bryan effin' Adams on the soundtrack too.

One of my favourite pastimes is to ragdoll my girlfriend around the house. I always quote that line from the wicked witch scene where she grabs Maid Marian by the womb and tells Alan Rickman to shag her: "She's ripe! She will give us a son. You must take her now."

Tubi is prob my favorite out of all of them and it’s the only one I don’t pay for.

Tubi is awesome. The way they do commercials is really cool. My wife has subscribed to almost every possible paid subscription and there are FAR more commercials on Hulu live and Paramount + than there are on Tubi.
Tubi has a catalog that seems to be infinite. Rob have you checked out any of the Tubi originals? I can’t remember the names but there were a couple that were really good. I also like to show my much younger wife some of the old tv shows that we had back in the 70’s. Our daughter and her husband can by and I was watching Barnaby Jones (I think) and they were laughing, but when I said we didn’t have much choice with literally only 3 channels + PBS (and sometimes would catch another station) they were blown away. They didn’t believe when I told them as kids we would think it was cool to stay up until the TV went off air - or wake up and tune in to watch the th go from static to being back on air!
Those were some pretty simple times when I think back.

I know what you mean man. The library of movies is insane. You can start looking for a movie on Tubi and an hour later realize that you’ve watched 50 trailers and added 30 to your watch list! There is no fckn way you can “finish” Tubi. Lol

Yeah I don’t mind the commercials at all, I actually prefer commercials as it feels like I’m watching in real time with the rest of the world, weird I know but just a feeling I get. Yeah I’ve watched some of the tubi originals and they aren’t bad at all. I have Hulu, paramount,Amazon, netflix, peacock,Disney, hbo max and some others and tubi to me is better than all. Also when I go to look at movies on demand they Verizon and they are 6.99-8.99 I sometimes find those new movies on tubi for free so as far as I’m concerned tubi is the clear winner for zero dollars.

Also like you and Wes said you find yourself looking for movies and next thin g I know it’s been 4 hours and I’ve looked at 100 movie and didn’t watch any hahah I don’t mind that either.

Fresh (1994) -

.

Solid little urban gangster movie that came and went during the 90's. Much better than the shitty trailer for it suggests. Surprisingly dark, with some twists and turns at the end. Closer to Abel Ferrara's work than standard Hollywood faire.

Clean copy here for those that want to try it -

I'm with Thin Lizzy on the movie thing. However, in 2023, I have watched more films than in the preceding 2 years, a period of time during which I had not watched any.  :D  I must have been influenced by Taffin and other Brits because I have noticed a trend. The films I watched more recently were either Bond films, Hammer horror flicks, or Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Bruce cracks me up with his mumbling routine as Watson.  :D

Masterpiece on Amazon Prime : Runaway Train

Good film. Very, very gritty and depressing. Ending with the snow blizzard was something else.

One film that's not often mentioned yet I find very well done given the low budget is Sporloos/The Vanishing, 1988. Kubrick phoned the director up after watching it 10 times in a row telling him how creeped out he was by it. Says a lot if Kubrick found it fascinating.

Full movie is available free on YouTube on this link if anyone's interested.

Sam Was Here (gets sort of shitty reviews but I liked it)...

Shudder

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5736592/

Sam, a door-to-door salesman, travels through the desert in search of clients, yet the area seems deserted. His wife won't answer his phone calls, and everyone seems to be avoiding him. His only contact with the outside world is a local radio station. The strange host, Eddy, takes calls regarding a child killer at large, and pushes listeners to hunt the man to death. Then Sam starts getting harassing calls on his pager. What is the cause of all this?

People talk about the streaming services failing because of inflation and all that.

But the reality is, Hollywood is no longer producing content that is tolerable for conservatives.

If you had Netflix 10 years ago, you watched the majority of their catalog that doesn't suck.

2014 was more or less the year where new content was worth watching. I have no idea what made 2014 so important, but you could just see everything hitting a brick wall.

Walking Dead, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Hell on Wheels, Boardwalk Empire etc was all great. And then boom not a drop of content that is worth watching.

The fact certain people get bored is usually a sign it is good.

A lack of this is a prerequisite for a film being good.

It'll probably be a bit till it's streaming, but "Killers of the Flower Moon" was surprisingly good. For a 3hr+ movie, I didn't find myself wishing it over, and while it was slow to unfold, it comes together really well. Some criticisms from my end are relatively minor. The characters are all maybe 10-15 years older looking than they should be. It takes place a few years after WWI, so many of the actors should be 25-30, 99% of the film look 35+. Also Deniro almost talks with his hands a bit during the film. He was a bit too much NY Italian for the role of a south westerner. On the plus side, he really does look like the in real life villain he portrays.

The film isn't social justicey, which made me happy. Some whites are villains in the story, but that's how the story played out in real life. I've seen 1950's -60's westerns that were more preachy than this effort. I also noticed some younger movie-goers being mad at this or simply not having the patience for the film. I fear for this new generation and their diet of "cape shit" films :(.

All in a solid 8-8.5/10 film. If this was Scorsese's or Deniro's last picture they'd have gone out on a good one.

Yeah, I liked it. I am very picky and usually hate most films, but I thought that this was just good, old-fashioned storytelling. It is a little bit too long, but DiCaprio & De Niro are two masters of their craft, in my opinion. Always a pleasure to watch them.

Loved the bit when he asked the gardner if he was prepared to die for his wife.   ;D

He was really subtle in the beginning and then came right out with it, not even raising his voice or being aggressive. "Just don't let me catch you man..."

I liked Brad Pitt’s character in “The Counselor”, but some of the other characters didn’t impress me.

There was a similar movie around the same time: “Savages”. Benicio Del Toro and John Travolta were great. But the other characters were not so impressive.

I watched Narcos and started picking up Spanish
I got myself a Spanish dictionary and a how to guide book

Its amazing how much like English Spanish is, they just put add on or replace letters after hundreds of words

The Counselor is awesome. I recommend reading Cormac McCarthy's screenplay, too. It's on Amazon.

It's like No Country For Old Men, but in a different time and setting. People trying out crime without seriously thinking how they are going to compete against people/organisations who have been doing it for generations.

I like how Brad Pitt's character tries to subtly talk the counsellor out of it without actually telling him to fuck off.

You`re kidding me?

I love when they try to make re-makes of established classics......not that "Payback" is a classic by any means, but there are some (most) movies you just cannot re-make.

They usually (mostly always) pale by comparison, or just flat out suck.

Oldman killed that part,as did James Gandolfini, not to mention Walken and Hopper in their classic "eggplant" scene,  LOL  ;D

Oldman was also great in "Bram Stokers Dracula" and the very under-rated flick "State of Grace".

I have Netflix, Max, Hulu, Prime and who knows what else and catching an excellent movie is rare. I settle for the standard, I hope it doesn't stink and has some entertainment. The worst movies are made by the streaming providers. They must be made by the same people, sets and writers.

I get hooked into some of these series and documentaries. Last one was on the soccer guy David Beckham that I thought was well done and revealed the person behind the persona of his celebrity.

When I binged the first 7 seasons of House MD in the spring of 2012, in a good week Netflix could send two DVDs.  I finished the 7 seasons in 7 months.

For a lot of classic films that aren't streaming for free, I just get a copy from a putlocker site.

Great movie based on the 1972 airplane crash in Uruguay, where the survivors had to feed on the dead for months before being rescued. Not a documentary but very acurate of the events and developments.

Agree with alot of the comments about streaming service movies.

Also watch older movies on Tubi. There's a few other free movie apps crackle, freevee, a few others. They usually all have the same selection, give or take.

There's a ton of great stuff on Youtube. Especially documentaries.

Binged on 70's dystopian sc-fi this past week.

Logans Run, Soylent Green, The Martian Chronicles,  Omega Man, Damnation Alley, Roller Ball and a few others. Zardoz- an oddly odd and strangely unintentionally funny movie.

I might've already mentioned these, but "Race With the Devil" was creepy as hell.

"Dead Bang" is good.  So is "Southern Comfort" and "Extreme Prejudice."  For a cool twist-ending film, check out "Frailty"; and for alt-history fun, albeit total nonsense, the original "Red Dawn" was fun (yeah, I like Boothe; sue me).

"Enemy Mine" was great for its time.

"A Simple Plan" is another fine film.

Gladiator was also a stupid revenge plot. Who the fuck are they kidding when they pretended he had a good marriage.

He had been all over the fucking world with the army, he wouldnt even have had a family.

Most of these films fail to contextualise the time it took to travel anywhere

Alexander the great conquering almost the entire globe by age 23
It would have taken him longer than that just to visit everywhere let alone find time to fight battles.

Revenge movies are probably popular because the average person doesn't have the balls to take revenge so they live vicariously through a movie about it ???

Most of these recommendations seem like they are for high school kids.

Each year I watch a few academy award nominated best picture films.

Most of the "mature" ones are a fucking slag - always depressing.

I've seen Oppenheimer, Anatomy of a Fall, and The Holdovers so far.  They were decent, but I don't really enjoy ones like Anatomy of a Fall.

Best movie of the year was Across the Spider-Verse, which was f'n awesome - in storyline, dialogue, presentation, and production.

All the villains/xenos were black too, beside the final one.

The final one was clearly a white supremacist.

Rory was also not a fan of the super natural aspect.

On the other hand, how many times can a person come back from the dead without being human? Most horror movies that have multiple parts have a super natural element to them.

With that said, I enjoyed both 1 and 2 and look forward to 3!

Flashpoint (1984), a neat little desert noir about two disgruntle Border Patrol agents that think they've found the answer to all their troubles when they find a dead man and a box of cash in the desert, only to have their plan collapse around them -

.

Full movie -

.

Stars Kris Kristofferson and Treat Williams. It's a good film that ends just a bit too quickly. 7/10.

Did I already mention "Southern Comfort"?

Great allegory film.

I also enjoyed "Race With The Devil."  Man, that is one creepy movie.  The premise was beyond far-fetched -- the protagonists, travelling through Texas in their RV, stumble upon what must amount to tens or even hundreds of thousands of Satanic cultists spread across hundreds of miles -- but sometimes, you gotta just sit back and suspend disbelief (more than usual!) to behold the spectacle, and sometimes, sheer hilarity of the subject.  Think:  "Commando" or "Red Dawn."  Both movies are totally ridiculous, but they are fun :)

I like flicking through channels. I’m the youngest boomer in the world.

revenge films have been around since films started

every single film /story has one of these narratives
Overcoming the Monster. The protagonist must defeat an antagonist (usually an individual, force, or entity) that threatens them and the wider world.

Rags to Riches. The protagonist achieves something they lack, loses what they’ve gained, and then gets it back again.

The Quest. The protagonist must set out in pursuit of a treasure, place, or other goal, overcoming challenges along the way.

Voyage and Return. The protagonist travels to a strange new place, experiences hardships and makes discoveries, and then returns home with the lessons they have learned.

Comedy. The protagonist experiences a series of lighthearted or confusing events, before the story resolves into a happy ending.

Tragedy. The protagonist has a central trait or flaw or makes a mistake, which results in catastrophe.

Rebirth. The protagonist undergoes a transformation, and often ends up a better person as a result.

We used to go into Boston's 'China-Town', they would play Kung-Fu movies 24x7. (Small Indy theatre).
We'd go on a SAT afternoon, bring in beer, weed, no one cared... $2.50 to get in, and you could leave whenever you wanted to.

Once at the movies we`d usually catch a Hammer film, along with a blackzploitation film like "Truck Turner" or "Shaft" then a Vincent price flick such as the "Oblong Box' all for 50 cents or so, plus a fucking cartoon.

I’ve noticed this in lots of these straight to streaming movies.
They have one good idea and just built a movie around it. Usually mostly garbage.

Same with bulk of series. First season might be good, then if it is a success but writers don’t have any ideas. Crash and burn.

Well done but ruined by the woke agenda. Business women wife with stay at home husband, playing dolls with the daughter. Then go seek relief from daddy issues to the wild, where he becomes a bald beta werewolf with prognathism. The slow transformation is a replica of Brundle fly journey, with him rotting down to a alopecia bulldog.

Like it wasnt enough to portrait him like a weak unemployed loser with emotional problems, they had the audacity of transforming him to bald, despite becoming a wolf.

I have probably already mentioned The Game and A Simple Plan.

Awesome flicks.

For sheet hot pussy value, I could watch Devil Wears Prada just to see Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt strut their lovely faces and asses.  Both of them make me frisky, as Fortress has said :)

The Warriors has also probably been mentioned.

I also probably mentioned Race With the Devil.  Creepy movie.  Some people in my neck of the woods swear that a Satanic cult, consisting of some major players, are a part of a cult called "Red Valley."

One kid I met swore that Red Valley made an annual sacrifice by tossing some hapless person off the top of a local mountain
:/

It's bullshit.  If someone has a Satanic infestation story a'la the Race With the Devil flick I mentioned, please, share it.  Otherwise, I reckon it was a bunch of bullshit.

The whole of season 6 is woke city.

Claire's single motivation is that "no man will ever again tell me what to do"

The final "revelation" that Doug killed Frank was laughable. The acting in that final scene equally bad.

The next time you drink,do a shot in my honor.  ;)

Watchable if you run out of better choices:

It was painful to watch.Probably worst Whalburger’s movie period.

Watch Adolescence on Netflix and Defending Jacob on Appletv.

Government propaganda dressed up as drama

Look here, its 13 year old white working class kids that are the main risk to girls and women in the UK

(Stop looking at the thousands of immigrants who think women are second class citizens flooding into the country every week)

They go with the least amount of risk and largest profit  .Actors are not well known so they’ve got paid peanuts , franchise in total had generated gross over $ 650 mill   .
Each movie was about $25 mil budget.
All in all Final Destination is not bad IMO.

Shannon acts really good .You want to punch him so hard for his arrogance ,but that’s how rich brokers are in real life.

Yea but you can see in some scenes he's not totally emotionless, he looks slightly guilty and awkward whereas Garfield couldn't desensitise himself atall.
