Anybody here got any resolutions for 2024 that they will probably discard in a week or two? ;D
-
I resolve to be better with my gimmicks in 2024.
-
Spend 2024 as a gym year, focus on good sleep quality, better eating, feeling good and getting back into my prior athletic shape.
-
I`m gonna emulate Hanky by purchasing the same PJ`s he wears !! ;D
-
Get out of walking boot (mid Jan)
Conventional deadlift 400lbs and run 5-10 comfortable miles right after (May 1)
GR 24+ hour event (Sept)
Hit a HR (any time April - Oct)
Hold a little less flub

Me too. Thought about running and trying to get ripped for summer. Got plenty of time for it.

I’m going to use an approach where I focus on other factors and see if they provide the end result of the physical change.
for example I’ll eat food up to 1pm-2pm and then stop because I want to improve sleep quality. The side benefit of this could improved control of calorie consumption resulting in weight loss without that being the main focus.
Doing weights as an objective for functional strength/mountain biking and muscle gets put on.
Doing cycling cardio 3x week to improve fitness, energy, lower BP and HR with the side benefit of better sleep quality, muscle fitness.
I showed my wife photos of me 4yrs ago at 83kg and I looked great. She is only worried my face will look gaunt/old. I’ll get a facelift perhaps lol 😂

Can you mentally handle being 200 lbs?

Figure out a way out.

To resolve not to waste a minute when feeling good, hitting the work outs hard. Going to quit my retirement job in March and concentrate on building a business from my home computer. I figure it will take six months and I could fall on my face but I have to try. Too hit a half million views on my training thread would be nice. I'm close.
Most importantly to value my wife more and to never forget Jesus in my life. I see my expiration date and I can't waste anymore time.

I’ve been running a lot recently. Always did bodybuilder style cardio, incline walk, stairs etc.
Running is amazing. I never once felt accomplished after the 40 mins on the stairs. Just something that had to be done.
The feeling when your 3 miles into your 4 mile goal and having to talk yourself into finishing, finding mental resolve. Nothing else in the bodybuilding sphere has that effect.

You`re gonna be OK Rich....when I was sick I put up a plaque and read it throughout the day:
"YOU NEVER KNOW HOW STRONG YOU ARE, UNTIL BEING STRONG IS THE ONLY CHOICE YOU HAVE".
BE STRONG AND HAVE FAITH !!

I have a lot of goals to work on,most of them are of a personal nature.
As far as training goes,I`m, training to be in the best shape of my life, and to do this I will have to also prove that age is just a number.
Visualization is key.................what you can see in your "minds eye" is what you can become. if you have tunnell vision............and I am driven to do just that.
If I fail,it will not be from a lack of trying cuz nothing beats a fail liked a good old college try, no matter what the outcome !!

Good post. Running does suck, but as you know, once your are in a routine, you feel amazing just at normal times when not working out. Also, learning about Zone 2 makes it so much more enjoyable / I used to think if I went over 7:45 on a mile I was “failing”.

Fuck no. I’m down to 230 now and I’ve only just gotten used to it. I’d imagine I’d need to be at 215-220 from what I’ve seen so far, to have abs. When I was 250 I would’ve thought I’d be ripped at this weight. Must’ve been delusional.

If you are 230 at 20-23% BF, you need to lose 23lbs+ of flub to be in ripped.
You're probably underestimating BF.

I don’t think it’s that high, but I could be wrong. I’d send you a pic, but chaos is the only dude I’ve sent shirtless pics to (no homo).
And great zinger on the Wes post. Saved me the time of double posting.

Well, my new "rollator" walker is due this week and I failed on that resolution not to have to use one...So my new and even more upset with myself resolution is to stay out of the wheelchair the doctor has said is coming for me. I visited my brother and his wife in Tucson and she is an ICU nurse and they let me try out a walker there.
It is humiliating. But to put things in perspective a friend of my brother had a massive stroke back when I had my humongous heart attacks and that stroke rendered him an invalid. He cannot walk at all. I wanted to visit him but my brother knew better than to allow me to do that as I don't think I could take that poor man's reality and would try to work up the nerve to drive off a cliff. But not over the ocean as I knew I would survive and drown, LOL! My brother visits him frequently and helped him sell his motorcycles as he cannot ride not even a trike.
So my resolution is to not ignore myself. I have PT and a doctor appointment this week and having been humbled at my last PT because I didn't want to park in the Handicapable space and then had another patient park so close to my car that when I tried to get in I fell backwards and was stuck between the two cars until I could pull/wiggle out. The man came out and saw me get free and then quickly got into his car and left without saying a word. I will park in the Gimp Spot from now on, LOL!
So that is my resolution. Do not ignore yourself my friends. I do not want a wheelchair ever. I had no idea how strong my legs were until I came here and spoke with Coach and then another gentleman that was also a strength coach in Florida. Now I am lucky/fortunate/blessed to be walking let alone (still!) alive. I didn't really ignore my injuries but many times I had no idea I was injured. So again. Do not ignore yourself.
Happy New Year!

Are you still in Tucson, or coming back soon ?

Excuse me, convict?

Are you still in Tucson, or coming back soon ?
I am home now. I stayed only 4 days and for some reason I thought you were out of town so I did not PM you. Would it be permissible to check in with via PM when next I go? I have to drive over again with one of my Laser Disc players to go into Phoenix to get a repair estimate done and my brother would probably come with me as sometimes I cannot drive well.
I had wanted to ride my motorbike out there but that might turn out poorly for me. ;D
He just had two of his receivers refitted with new capacitors, lights, etc. at this place. I told him about wanting to meet you and he said not this time as we also went to Tombstone to get some souvenirs for my three grandchildren!
Please let me know and thank you for asking!

Resolution, HA. Live right every day and there is no need for a "resolution". Resolutions are on the top of my list for the stupid things stupid people do.

I look at them as more a reminder than a resolve. A promise made to oneself if you will. The only promises made to anyone that are stupid are the ones that are not within mortal reason and therefor cannot be met. ;D

New Year's resolutions are only stupid if one makes them in advance to wait to start on a specified date, instead of just starting at the time they made the resolution.
But there's also nothing wrong with planning goals for the new year and working to accomplish.
But I will say making them when you know there is no chance of accomplishing (irongrip getting ripped, etc) is just a waste of time.

I agree it's a different feeling from lifting weights. I find I'm alive after running. Feels like I had five cups of coffee. After lifting I feel calm and confident. A psychiatrist wrote a whole book on how cardio is good for the mind called Sparks. Very dry reading but his determination is that doing something like running is an antidepressant, increases creativity and also makes your brain work better that's provable in testing.
Going to try to run 5 miles before work but I hate winter running. I will give it a shot. Hard to get out of bed to go running on a cold dreary New Jersey morning before work. I'm still doing slug runs but I hope to improve.

Wow.......Best of luck with getting more mobility in 2024. Don't be too stubborn to use handicapped parking! lol
Use the closer parking spaces until you get healthy enough to not need them. Good luck to you, Scott....

According to the zone 2 stuff, it's almost always better to enjoy the run at the slow pace.
I will now do that, and just add in some sprint training separately.

Sounds like it's time for a custom pimped out walker. 8)
-
I turn 54 in a few weeks.
This year I aim to bench 455. The horsepower of my favourite supercar, the famed original supercar, a 1985 Lamborghini Countach 5000QV downdraft.
Other than this, just continue to purchase hard rock and metal (and various jazz) CDs and rock hard.

Thank you, Deacon! I recall yelling something vile toward him when trying to get in the other side of my car but he paid no attention. ;D It is not as if I could actually catch him as I am quite the slug where running is concerned. ;D

No doubt. Headed to the Caribbean first week of February, so it’s too late for that (unless I get my hands on that dandelion infused crap. You got any?) but going again in July and would really like for this year to be the year I can don the speedo (no homo).

According to the zone 2 stuff, it's almost always better to enjoy the run at the slow pace.

I know zero about zone running. Sometimes science makes something simple complicated. Have hard runs and easy runs. Have long runs and short runs. Throw in a day of fartlek or intervals in the mix. Make the training your own. Of course what I laid out is something a recreational 5K guy might do. A high level runner would be something else and more structured. Following someone else's path is a path of ruin if it's not right for you.
Regarding the typical long day on a week of training one of the biggest mistakes is going too fast and having to cut the mileage short for the day. It's best to make the long day doable and it will pay dividends in endurance because of the total time and miles spent running. Many a runner have found they became better runners when they slowed down and got the mileage in.

I have found I am at my best with shorter, more frequent runs. Meaning, I don't have to do long distances to accomplish a goal.
First time I ever ran was 2013, because I got challenged to a Tough Mudder. I figured I would do a 5k to start. I had to stop 11 times, and it took me 33 minutes......I didn't want to ever feel that way again so...I did HIT cardio 5x a week for 20 min on a treadmill for 3 weeks. Tried the 5k again and did it easy in 23 min.
When I was training for a 50 mile ruck event, I did 5 miles a few times a week, and one 12 a week before. Never got tired on the event.
5 miles is the max for me running that's enjoyable. The zone 2 stuff will make me record more mileage.

Wouldn’t New Year’s resolutions always either be made on, or start on, NYD?
My 2024 NYR is to go to Las Vegas.
‘Nuff said.

Sure, for something like that.
But I've seen people say "I'm going to start exercising next year on Jan 1".....when it's November, and they should just start immediately.

Good luck with your resolutions guys especially you Scott.Keep grinding buddy.
Thank you, brother! I shall do so!
-
Not bb related. Get a move on with my overland setup. I won't have a Mad Max rig this time next year but I'd like to develop an understanding of what works with a few modest trips in my Isuzu.
-
Spend more time outdoors and in the sunshine.
I work in research and most of that time is in a high tech cave. I've reached my limit in that world.
-
I have found I am at my best with shorter, more frequent runs.
Dude how was that 50 mile event?
-
Dude how was that 50 mile event?
It was basically like this: 20lb weight+ruck + water/food so about 33 lbs. At 9 pm you get a list of 30 or so points you have to find. Then you map your route using apps or anything you want, and go find them. You take a group photo at each point and hashtag it on instagram so goruck can verify you did what you were supposed to.
The NY one was rough. 46 degrees and torrential rain. That was actually the fun part. The not fun part was that we rushed to get out of the gate, and did not plan our route meticulously, and missed points we were supposed to find. So we had to back track, run, scramble, etc....it was high stress because if you are one second past the 20 hour point, you fail. We took 19 hours, and added miles due to fuck ups, so it was like 53 miles. One guy quit when we had to run back a mile due to missing McSorley's.
Did one in Boston, took the extra time, never missed a waypoint, and did it in 15 or so. Much less stress.
The hard part about doing this stuff in the city is that because of all the pavement, your feet will inevitably hurt. So even though I was prepared, every mile after 38 was like walking on glass.
Both times my wind was never an issue, never felt the ruck, and never got tired. But the pain in your feet can be pretty tough.
-
Good post. Running does suck, but as you know, once your are in a routine, you feel amazing just at normal times when not working out. Also, learning about Zone 2 makes it so much more enjoyable / I used to think if I went over 7:45 on a mile I was “failing”.
I also plan to go back to running, right now I am approximately 250lbs so running is very taxing on the legs and feet, I can run but simply can't recover well enough to lift weights heavy, I also believe I should at least run twice a week and do a serious running routine but that would also get in the way of the regular training schedule. I don't really care about speed, I like to keep my heart rate at 150bpm to 160bpm.
How heavy are you guys and does it interfere with running?
-
I agree it's a different feeling from lifting weights.
While I’m not much of a runner, the way I train I get a major cardio workout in (and I always do 30 minutes every day of some type of straight cardio - weights 3 days 4 rare max)
I 100% agree with you on the way it makes you feel. I cannot remember the study, but there was at least one that showed cardio / training is multiples more effective anti-depressant than even the strongest pills. They compared serotonin and dopamine levels and it was across the board definitive.
-
Considering TRT.
-
Technically that would be...me! Thanks, Calvin! You are The Man! ;D
I can make exceptions ;D
-
I am home now.
Mr. Scott, I am “out of town”, my house here in AZ is a winter home and I live in Chicago full-time.
Although apparently I don’t “really” own my houses here, in Hawaii, or in Italy. The board retards are sure I just made that up because; I can afford a home in Paradise Valley, AZ, but I can’t afford to live with my mommy in Port Arthur, Ontario ! Hahahaha….what a tiny little retard.
Let me know when you’re here next and we can meet up.
For those too stupid to catch the sarcasm, I’ve sent photos of me in the PV house to Henda a long time ago. He still hasn’t come here to fix the loose pavers on the patio. He dates fat women.
-
Was thinking of taking up an adult learning course. Or maybe take up piano, again? Got all the time in the world, now.
-
I’ve been running a lot recently.
I beg to differ. Seeing the striations and pump when you're well into a weights session beats any running endorphins, imo. Truly appreciate the effort you've put in as it's there in the mirror.
-
This year it’s all about business. Goal is to grow the Joe Local brand to several coastal areas around the country and in other countries (already had a couple of distribution meetings while in Australia) and we’re in the process of a business plan dedicated to firearms instruction, the Second Amendment while integrating it with fitness.
-
It should be to stop your drinking.
Obviously a drink problem
What kind of nonsense post is this? How would you know how much I drink? I have a few drinks and I mean a few three times a week? If that's your definition of a drunk then all who consume adult beverages are drunks.
-
I’m going to use an approach where I focus on other factors and see if they provide the end result of the physical change.
for example I’ll eat food up to 1pm-2pm and then stop because I want to improve sleep quality.
I hate the way I look facially when I'm lean. I look much better with some fat in my face.

Haha makes wonder how many of these insults hidden in threads have missed. I wouldn’t even fuck a fat woman these days let alone date them, in younger days maybe (not dates though fuck being seen with a fatass). I’m being “forced” to get my passport by my friends this year so there is hope for the loose pavers fixed haha

I more or less fell apart during covid. It wasn't just covid it was working from home. At first it was the promise of infinite time to exercise etc. But in reality I just fell into a kind of depression.
I'm on the flip side of things now. I spent the last 4 years spinning my wheels, it sucked but the good news is I developed a mountain of skills I never had. I finally learned how to practice my guitar/learning french/learning to cook and eat clean.
At this point I feel like I have enough skills that I no longer have to look for new tricks and skills to get me forward. I made a long list of habits I developed during covid and had before covid. I'm at the point now where I don't need to do anything new, I just need to go back to all the things I use to do well.
Eating once a day, avoiding sugar like it's aids
Getting up at 5am every day
Biking 5-6 hours a week
Playing with a metronome and trying to get my hand speed up on guitar
Watching netflix in only french
Reading my French bible every night before bed
Not letting Sloth/Wrath/Greed/Lust/Gluttony/Envy/Pride hijack my day.
Staying off youtube/social media
Staying away from negativity, especially politics, a lot easier now that Trudeau is imploding.
Stop spending money on worthless indulgences like take out, take that money and go out more, going out is really affordable when you're just eating salads.
My next big step is getting an in person job and getting a gym membership so I can get back into the routine of working out on my way to work. (Life hack don't shower at home on work days it means you have to go to gym prework even if it's only for a shower).
-
Sure, for something like that.
But I've seen people say "I'm going to start exercising next year on Jan 1".....when it's November, and they should just start immediately.
Depends on where you live, in southern Ontario it's not a resolution as much as a plan for the winter.
Otherwise you spend the winter months waiting for the snow to melt.
No point in starting a winter routine when there's not a drop of snow on the ground.
It's also largely psychological, October to Xmas is my favorite time of year Thanksgiving/Xmas/Halloween etc. There's always something to look forward to and Xmas is usually when I'm spending money/taking vacations.
Spring sucks but atleast you can go outside, summer sells itself, winter is the only time of year I need to make a plan to not hate my life. Granted that means nothing if you live in the sunbelt.

This is just an excuse. Put weight in a pack, get outside, and go. F the weather. You all have clothes.

exactly this..i remember training under very primitive conditions for boxing training in the British Army.
Running in tracksuit wearing army boots running through tank tracks on the ranges. No excuses the harder the better.
was deep snow but i loved it. The fittest stage of my life.

Exactly.
It's not complicated - do the work, be consistent, reap the benefits.

Anybody here got any resolutions for 2024 that they will probably discard in a week or two? ;D
There are no New Years resolutions from me. All they do is set one up for failure... in a week or two. :)

Sounds like it's time for a custom pimped out walker. 8)
I asked for Harley Candy Burnt Orange and they said I'd be lucky to get red. ;D

...Outed!

It just arrived. It's red and has a seat with storage under it.
Apparently I have fallen too much lately so they expedited this to me. :-[ I am looking into the Dukes of Hazard horn! Still, I am grateful for all that I have.

No idea what you're getting at?
My whole point was literally justifying why I need a "new years resolution" each january. This is the whole dam point, if you don't make a plan/resolution you just stand around sitting on your hands until the snow melts.

Suspiciously foreign for sure.
But I think he did an "ou" spelling where a simple "o" would have sufficed, so I would say it's confirmed.
