I think Cook realized he wasn't going to make enough bread as an IFBB Pro.

He probably realized he wasn't going to place very well & eventually loose all contracts.

As we heard on the radio show tonight, Cook is leaving BBing for UFC fighting.

This makes me wonder- If his pro card was indeed a gift (as many have asserted it was), does this clearly show that giving pro cards to marketable guys who have "earned it", although they don't have the most impressive physique onstage, is a TERRIBLE IDEA?

Cook had looks, a Weider contract, and was crowned a pro when he might not have earned it.  And what happened?  He didn't succeed at all as a pro, and moved on.  This means a pro card that COULD have gone to a guy with potential to make a mark as a pro, did not.

Rewarding loyalty and basing pro card decisions on marketing potential - bad idea?

Chris Cook is going to get into UFC fighting?Thats a hell of a jump from bodybuilding.I dont honestly think Cook will even make a dent in the UFC, but who knows, I could be wrong.

Smart guy, he can make more $$$$ in one MMA fight then most pro's will make in their careers.

Don't be absurd. Unless you're at the top, and I mean the very top, you won't make much money in MMA at all. They are very underpaid indeed.

Even w/ MMA fighters making shit $, it's still better than most pro BBer's.  Unless you're top 3 or 5, you didn't even recoup your contest prep expenses.  Just b/c of his bodybuilding marketability, he'll probably get a few decent fights for some of the smaller productions.  Does he have any fighting background?  Are the ads w/ Arlovski for Gamma O the closest he's been connected to MMA? ;D

Why all the naysayers on Cook's MMA career move? Who knows...maybe he's been studying martial arts for years...

TOP TEN REASONS FOR CHRIS COOK TO JUMP TO THE UFC

1. Pre-contest expenses cut from $3500/month to $150/month for membership at Gracie Jui Jitsu
2. Can eat "baker's dozen" of donuts on daily basis without looking worse than current UFC champion.
3. Will get paid more for getting knocked out in 30 seconds than he was paid competing for 2 years in the IFBB.
4. Doesn't have to worry about being mocked for guest-posing condition by bucktooth jackasses on Getbig.com.
5. No longer has to deal with pressure as being "great white hope" in white-dominated UFC.
6. Gay-for-pay business just as good in the MMA industry, according to Phil Baroni.
7. Wide open for MMA marketing opportunities for a guy with muscles. Xyience will have me looking like a beer-chugging fantasy football leaguer in no time? Deal!
8. Can share highlight and hair coloring tips with new comrades Tito Ortiz, Chris Leben, and Kevin Randleman.
9. Never really liked "feminine" nose and plastic surgery too expensive.
10. After getting punched in the gut by his sponsors, what's a few more punches?

What if Chris Cook actually knows how to fight, and becomes a winning fighter, or at least a .500 record guy.

Would you guys give him props?

Bottom line is...Chris Cook is doing what's best for himself and his wife.

He's always been one of the smarter guys, and has re-assessed where he is in life, whats important, and where he see's his families future. He can always come back to Pro BB...He's only 30.

I personally think he's making a smart move by securing financial security at THIS point, and not getting to be 35-40 and THEN trying to figure out what to do with his life...

Bob,

How is Chris "securing financial security at THIS point"?  Last time I checked, low level MMA fights pay under $1000 per fight and the UFC pays under $5000 for non-title fights.

The MMA thing is totally irrelevant...

Chris is working in the financial consulting business...it's a paying, regular job with great potential for moving up the ladder and making a secure living.

He never said (nor did I) that he was thinking about making a living from it...

Chris had the potential to be top 10 at the O easy and he wasted it

with his look he was one of the most marketable pro too

it's a shame he never got in shape
