I totally agree Adonis..The current system here in the states is broken...We need to be like other civilized nations around the globe..

Well, depending on what type of cancer one has, the European model would certainly not be the best pick. Cancer survival rates for colon cancer, amongst others is quite a bit lower than it is in the US. Health care in Europe is rationed, so it isn't the be all and end all.

Norway, Sweden, and Finland are all at the VERY TOP of survival rate for colon cancer, ahead of the United States and ALL have UNIVERSAL Healthcare.

Plus, the survival rate has nothing to do with the quality of healthcare. If you read the  Verdecchia study, it has to do with early detection and an aware population and not quality.

Thank you everyone...and even you Pollux.  You might not have said anything nice, but you took the time to read the thread and add your own "spice".  I definitely appreciate all the support and well wishes from everyone.  We always hear the word cancer spoken..sometimes we hear it daily and it doesn't quite effect you until you hear it as it pertains to someone you know (maybe even just on a message board).  That same word spoken to you about you by a doctor becomes quite deafening.   It really makes you look at things quite differently.  I told another getbigger tonight that even though I don't know everyone that I speak to on this board when I come on here ... I feel like I'm hanging with friends ... and that helps.  So even though we all do poke fun at each other (some more than others  ;)) I want to thank you all for being there to make me laugh and even meltdown once in a while.
Bast, you are right.  Most thyroid cancers are curable.  My situation is a bit more complex though unfortunately.  I've had these nodules on my thyroid now for almost 4 years, who knows how long I've had cancer in them as they were never biopsied in the past.  I also have an auto-immune disease and have had enlarged lymph nodes in my chest for 7 months now, while they were concentrating on thinking it was the Sarcoidosis that made them enlarged.  The treatment they have me on for the Sarcoid didn't help the lymph nodes decrease in size.  Believe me, I am praying every second that when they get in there (chest) everything is clean as a whistle and they pull out the diseased thyroid, give me my treatments after the surgery and say "you're good as gold".  But if not...then I plan on fighting my ass off.

Keep us posted!

Laura,

I have been dealing with sarcoid for the past 5 years and had an open lung biopsy about 4 years ago.

Do not be afraid. It sounds scary when they talk about collapsing a lung, but I was only in the hospital for 1 night, then recovering on vicoden for a week. Be careful with the vicoden.

I was only left with 2 small scars on my back, which look like old wounds from a knife fight. Better than tattoo’s. I had a great surgeon.

Get some good sunglasses. Prednisone and sarc will make your eyes super sensitive.

I am doing fine, and I am still the biggest threat to my own health.

Prevention is always preferable to treatment, which in the U.S. system usually means catastrophic (read: ultra expensive) treatment. I do fear the rationing that that socialized medicine would bring, wait times for necessary diagnostic regimes and tests etc. If I need a heart scan I sure don't want to be on a 1-6 month waiting list. Plus, with the population of the U.S. and all of the illegal immigrants that would  be sucking off the system, one could only imagine the trouble.

Another thing, I don't like the fact that unhealthy people who drink, smoke, do drugs, get no exercise and eat McDonalds every day would pay just as much as me. So, they get the same healthcare but have no reason to change their lifestyle and behavior, which means those that keep themselves healthy then have really no reason to stay healthy.

Huge point.

You are a product of your actions.

Why pay for the actions of others?

Look you buffoon,
You are not capable of rational thought. You probably think you should have Police Insurance or Fire Insurance so if someone who gets their house broken into they should be denied protection or if their house were to be on fire, the Fire Department should skip over and let it burn.  Your same mentality would have Federal and government employees without healthcare.  I digress, but the government can and will do things correctly.

You would rather have Laura agonize and wither in pain simply because she can`t afford medical care?  A service that could EASILY be taken care of if we spent just a fraction less on Bombs, Guns and Hummers?

Your ignorance is overabundant you knuckle dragging dolt.

This reads 100%  correct.  Good post dude.

Terrible argument. 1: Disease can be inherited. 2: People act on incomplete information all the time, thus they do not always act in the best interest of their health even though they believe so. 3: Your argument does not apply very well to young people.

Given your reasoning, a 12 year old with cancer (inherited or not) or another terrible disease coming from a poor family that can not afford health insurance is a product of his own actions. Go figure ::) (And please don't come with the "it's his parents responsibility" argument..)

The only real application for your argument is for self destructive fatties like Vince Basile, smokers and other reckless people, that is understandable. But your argument fails terribly at discrediting socialized healthcare, and it is really contains retarded reasoning.

Laura,

Your type cancer luckily is not fatal and won`t be so don`t worry at all that your mortality is at stake.  Focus instead on the recovery afterwards and look ahead.  Make sure you also get second opinions.

Also, if you can`t afford care, please sign up for Medicaid and also visit various non-profit cancer sites.  They will always help you out. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take a minute to send and sign this: www.HR676.org  or  http://www.michaelmoore.com/sicko/what-can-i-do/petitions/pnum649.php

The bill is HR 676, single payer Universal HealthCare for all.  Nobody in America should die or get second class treatment simply because they can`t afford it.  I urge you Laura to send this to all of your friends and to sign it.

very nice post of you Adonis

That's what I was referring too. I know genetic factors and inherited diseases aren't a product of someones actions. I was talking about those who are willfully reckless. Smoke, eating, drinking, drugs and other dangerous behavior, this should be taken into account. If I don't smoke, eat right, have a solid physical, bloodtests, liver enzyme counts etc, I should be rewarded for that. This would also provide economic incentive for people to take better care of themselves which in-turn is good for the nation as a whole.
