When do you know when it's time to go cut down bodyfat?
« on: April 13, 2009, 10:19:31 AM »
I went on diet for a week but lost all movitation now because i don't have that much bodyfat to lose, maybe 10lbs to get down to "abs" level. I just stopped the diet because i think i'd rather get stronger than waste this time losing that 10lbs to be cut.

do it slowly, there is no reason why you can't lose bodyfat and get stronger at the same time  :)

Interesting question.

Dan Duchaine use to mention once you got out of 10-12% bf. range, it was time to drop weight. His reasoning was that even a fit big guy at a bit higher percentage will look like a lump of crap at those percentages.

I think you can go a bit higher than that(I had my best size/strength gains in the 14-16% range), but I think it right not to perma-bulk in most cases, dieting simply eats everything away.

The one case I think It is warrented is if you want to get your strongest naturally, 99% of the really strong natural powerlifters I've seen had to let themselves become messes at 1 point to get there.

In your case, I'd simply run at a 500 cal. def. for a few weeks.

Impossible; weight loss and muscle gain are completely different antagonistc metabolic processes. In order to gain new mass you HAVE to have an ever so slight caloric surplus; in order to get lean you need to HAVE an ever so slight caloric deficit. Maybe he was talking about chemically enhanced people; he talks about 1500 calories a day and gaining muscle? Who does that?

you have to be in a calorie surplus to gain fat
calorie deficit to lose fat
don't get them mixed up, gaining muscle is a matter of how hard you work out not how much you eat.

Protein builds muscle,not calories.

As far as I know though, a positive nitrogen balance is required which can only be brought about by a caloric surplus.

protein doesnt build muscle

protein is used in the muscle building process.

lifting weights signals muscle growth. hormones signal muscle growth. eating excess calories can signal muscle growth.

protein alone doesnt signal muscle growth. (to a small extent a high leucine and fast digesting protein like whey will boost nitrogen retention a bit, albeit)

drink beer, dont try to lose WEIGHT thats the WORST WAY

start by improving your HDL to LDL

if u think u are having too much beer go for chocolate for energy

drink plenty of grapejuice during workouts

It's very possible to get stronger and lose fat.  It's VERY HARD to lose fat and gain muscle.  Strength and muscle growth are two different things and are not always part and parcel to one another.
