i'm a former engineer and i have never heard of anyone being offered that.  Even the most elite of engineers don't even get offered 130k.

I actually had to leave computer programming in 1998 because i couldn't get any employment.  The sad part about this is that only a very small fraction of engineering/computer grads even get any offers of employment.

tend to agree with this post. our principal and senior guys get between 110 and 150. and theyve been doing it for 20 years. unless of course you are referring to contract rates?

we pay contractors $150-$250 per hour. that equates to well over $300k PA, and some contracts go longer than 12 months, but most are 6 months or less.

prior to my current gig (on $155k), i was getting $200ph..which is good while it lasts- but ive been doing this for nearly 20 years.

most technical types who arent engineers get about $80-$100 ph.

grads would get about that- which equates closer to about $170k.

depends how close the suburb is to the city and also how close to the coast.... close to either is expensive.

we live in the city and pay $4750 per month in rent for a nice but not big apartment... in suburbs you can get an old house for $2200 per month though.

a house near the beach is $2-$3 million to buy if it is decent but can run a lot higher.

food and gas are the killers though... good steak is about $13-$14 per pound... there are 2 main supermarket chains who run what is pretty much a cartel operation.

australia is gonna face some tough times soon though because everyone has been relying on increasing home equity and have huge credit card debts but things are slowing down and once the job market softens and house prices fall then many people are fucked.

:o  That's nuts!  I'm in a southern suburb of Perth and pay $310/wk rent for a brand new 3x2.  Ya the local butcher charges about $35/kg for porterhouse but the rump isn't bad for $25/kg.  I never buy beef or lamb from Woolies.  Some of the worst meat I've ever had.  Their supplier here must be hopeless.

I meant how much you pay in rent is nuts.  I knew it was more out east but I had no idea it was like 4x as much.

Tbh I have no idea what will happen.  Stagnate but not fall more than 10% if I had to guess, but I don't follow real estate at all because I don't really have the time or the interest in it.  My knowledge of the real estate market pretty much stops with whether it's more expensive for me to rent or buy.

I agree. Contract work probably but that's normal $/hr for newly-graduate temp. work. I would rather work for a full-time position with salary and benefits than scrambling to win another job or being on unemployment in 6 mnths-1yr

Most entry level Engineers start from 55-70k here in Houston depending on what field you work in. I know a guy who was offered 95k straight out of school to work as a Mechanical Engineer for Technip here in Houston, but that is unheard of most of the time. If you are a registered Professional Engineer like myself, you can make 100k+ after 10-15 years of quality experience in your field. Making 6 figures in Houston is more than enough to sustain a very healthy lifestyle, but it all depends on how you spend your money. It's not how much you make, but how much you spend. I own a 3500 SF 4 bedroom home in a very nice part of town and it was only 260k brand new and it was a custom build. Things are really cheap down here compared to other parts of the US and the World.

I know a few Engineers who work contract for the Port of Houston Authority and they get anywhere from $75-150 per hour for construction inspections.

When i got out of school with my BS in Civil Engineering i got a job making 68k with a nice signing bonus, but i already had 7 years of civil design experience by the time i graduated because i worked for a Civil Engineering firm the entire time i was in school. We have two graduate Engineers (E.I.T.) at my firm right now who are paid about 55k a year and these guys are in their early 20's fresh out of college.

really, glad you know how I feel.  Actually I despise leaches who just sit around and do nothing and rely on the government to get by, I think they should be gassed.  The only thing I may have expressed socialist thinking on was health care because the companies have such a monopoly on the whole system and are gaming the customers big time.

I was commenting on the 4,000 dollar rent on a modest apartment that is ridiculous if he had to pay that himself, if it wasn't his wife's company paying for it.  Who in their right mind would sign up for that kind of rent?

sounds right to me.

wish our houses were $260k though.

our median price is $400k (Au), and we live in perhaps the cheapest city in australia.

we've had nasty Real estate boom with foreign investors buying up properties and land making rent and home ownership very difficult for the average joe.

imagine a $300k loan when you earn $50k PA. over 35 years thats about $2.5k per month from a net wage of $3-$3.5k per month.

my brother has just finished his mechanics apprenticeship. he's looking at earning $50-$70k for his life and has no idea how he's going to be able to afford a house.

then there's rent at $350 pw and minimum wage at $570pw before tax....and thats in the cheap areas.

of course much worse in sydney.. $800k houses being paid off by 2 people earning $100k each per year and not being able to afford to go out or get nice furniture.

but, then they sell in 24 months and make $100-$150k.

crazy shit
