The 90's were an abysmal decade for rock/metal in North America.

The quality music was being made in Europe.

Evergrey
In Flames
Hypocrisy
Stratovarious
Arch Enemy

Why didn't any of these bands make it big in the States?  It's not as though Americans are prejudiced when it comes to music.

The reason is that this overly technical music lacks heart and soul and the songs are even very good.

The reality is that there was a stretch in the 90s when Tool was easily the best hard rock band in the world.

The majority of bands listed so far are not worth a hand job. The 80s produced some of the best bands and best music ever. The 90s sucked that's why there are no longer hardly any bands still around from that era

Nah, heroin is why there aren't many bands left from the 90s ;).

Pearl Jam
Faith No More
Alice
STP
Black Crows
Metallica
Rage Against the Machine

...though not a band......Stevie Ray Vaughn 8)
Metallica started in the 80's. I think he meant only bands that begun in the 90's... So my vote is Rammstein!

The music I posted isn't exactly technical, nor does popularity equate with quality.

After Nirvana hit in the early 90's, rock bands were dropped from virtually every record label around. Grunge and alt-rock were the only bands being signed. Only the major bands like Metallica and Pantera (which hit number 1 in 94 with Far Beyond Driven) were still kicking. Big business killed music in the 90's. Local music didn't fare much better with rock bands going from playing week long gigs to single set a week, if they were lucky.

North American television and radio dictated what the public listened to and watched. If one band hit it big, 20 clones of said band were then signed. There was very little outlet for other music to be heard as this was prior to the explosion of music on the internet and file sharing.

The 90s sucked that's why there are no longer hardly any bands still around from that era but many bands from the 80s are still going strong today and are as good as ever like this band for example:

Screw 90s music.

Well put.  Half the bands aren't even around anymore....Danimall has a good list up there, but again some of those bands are from the 80's and 70's..where great QUALITY solid rock came from.  Not this screaming, distorted, death metal bulls*t.

hahaha, I didn't say they had the best politics of the 90's...I just like their tunes. I'm a pretty simple minded dude. I don't know what the efff they are singing about in half of their songs, I just like Tom Morello's riffs.

Rage and Tool are definitely my top 2 bands from the 90's
