Pullups with Added Resistance
« on: April 22, 2011, 04:00:28 AM »
Does anyone do pullups with added resistance?  I just started incorporating added resistance to my pullups to increase the intensity, overall strength and improve the amount of reps I can do.  Normally I can do 5 sets of 10-15 reps without added weight, but I'm throwing in sets with a 25 pound plate and a 45 pound plate.  I weigh about 225 and can do 2 sets of the 25 pound plate for 8-10, and a set with the 45 for about 5-6 good reps. I'd like to be able to hit the 45 pound plate for about 3-4 sets of 10-12 reps.  Thoughts on adding resistance?

doing pull ups eithout resistance is pointless unless you're a weak bitch.

do few sets with added resistance, and then after ward super set it with your own bodyweight.

But don't rely on your OWN bodyweight with pull ups, you don't do shit with that...

At least not when you weigh 150lbs...

We had this discussion here before, when you weigh 300lbs like Jason, you don't need added weight.  ;)

with OWN bodyweight, ofcourse, but still doing 30 reps, over 20 reps, so they could easily do them with much more added weight

If feeling the need to add extra plates than try one arm pullups/chins for a whole different feel and results from that exercise. Might suggest doing them (2 or 1 handed) from gymnastic rings. Or swivel rings. Gives a more natural pull & twist.

If doing one arm chins than hold the free arm behind the back. Getting extra advanced, after a while, hold a DB in the free hand. One arm (bwt or added weight) seems to hit the lats & arms like nothing else. Good Luck.

Only recently got back into doing pull ups, had to work my way up to doing full sets of 8-12.....now I do 3 sets at the start of a back workout to failure but I use a straight bar (well 2" pipe).

or just do pullups 3rd in the workout and you won't need extra weight.

if you're fat enough just hold on for dear life

This.

This is why I don't take training advice from these boards 99% of the time.

You were trolling right?

Don't you weigh about 130lb after about five years of training? I'll pass on the advice.

In related news i love pull ups, one of the best feeling movements. Just alternate between max reps bodyweight and building up weight resistance.

I'm pretty sure I have the strength to do one I just haven't fooled around enough to get the mechanics right I believe. I can do the one hand on wrist pull up all day though. I want to do one where my other arms is just hanging there.
