Part of the reason I want to come back is to put an old school classic physique back on stage.
I also enjoy showing what is possible on little or no drugs.
I was off everything for about a yr when this pic was taken.
I'll tae it as a HUGE compliment if some refuse to accept I wasn't on anything .
I always would laugh to myself when people told me what I had to be on to compete and look good.
I'm on Androgel now so I guess I'm not natural but at least I'm honest.
I think go for it Howard, It may be a little harder and you will have to watch out for injury and train smart, but to tell the truth, I am always far more inspired when the older guys get in shape.  And at your age I couldn't think of anything better for the ego and self esteem that to get in better shape than the majority of guys half your age.  Like they say, Aim for the moon, even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.

E-KUL, Even though I can't agree with you entirely, I 'ALMOST' do agree with you entirely and have to honestly say ...... "Well stated, E-Kul!"

My point of contention is that bodybuilding has never been for the masses nor was it ever intended to be for the masses .......

BUT ....

It has grown from absolutely nothing into 'something' that has gathered more attention than was ever anticipated or even deserved.

And that alone cannot be denied ......

Contests that used to include 8 - 12 competitors posing under a basketball net now attract hundreds competing in major city venues.

And still competing for plastic trophies or metal cups or silver swords.

Only the awards have remained the same, except for the relative few who get the covetted 'pro card' and somehow manage to turn it into enough of an advantage to cover their expenses to remain within the game.

I gotta admit that you are correct with what you said ... but there is a hell of a lot more that you have failed to consider.

I have nothing to lose... but fat ,at this point, so wtf?
I have been easing into the diet part and been a tad hit or miss aka inconsistant.
Training is going well, but I gotta tighten up the ol' diet.
I'm 90% sure I'll do the over 50 NPC ga state , on my own terms.

What do a think? This was me at my best in 1988. I have not competed since 1994.
I'm 54 and chunky ( perma bulker) , should I try again or just accept my fate as a middle aged "has been" that never was??????.

= mid life crisis! Avoid competing, feats of strength, pills and marriage. Hope this helps.

I know a 60 year old bloke who insisted he was going to run a marathon. I told him it was foolish and injury was inevitable. He didn't listen.
He had to give the project away because of damage to his knees!

If you insist on getting in shape then do it so you can post a photo here on Getbig. That should be sufficient. Buy your own trophy if you need

one! :)

Call me nostalgic, but back when I was a teenager and the likes of Gaspari, Haney, Demey and Paris were competing, their physiques were admirable and gave the young trainer something to aspire too and it was believable that you could achieve a similar look.  It took me a while to learn that they were enhanced pharmaceutically (back then it was very hush hush - Tom Platz was one of the first guys to speak out, and he copped hell for it), but even back then, individual health was a concern, their was a healthy respect for limits, to me this is what bodybuilding should be about, great physique coupled with great health and a respectable amount of cardiovascular fitness.

I never wanted bodybuiling to become part of the mainstream, but the changes it made even isolated the current fans, their was a lot of people speaking out against the mass at all costs ideal, like Shawn ray, labrada etc  And I agreed with them, and even though bodybuilding did change and managed to survive, for me it lost it's appeal and the good feeling I had being associated with it.  I became one of those people who ridiculed it also, I used to defend bodybuilding when others attacked it, but once the mass monster era took over, I became one of those who ridiculed it also.  I followed the Naturals for a while, but that also became a farce, now i just sit on the sidelines and comment on getbig and train as much as I can, but not for a LOOK, but for purely health and fitness reasons.

well Vince I just got married ( again ) 2 mos ago, just pushed my poundage on some back moves today in the gym and enjoy
useing Ciallis and Viagra pills  ;)

The problem with marriage is having kids. the problem with competing is pushing beyond your own terms.
Useing pills for building muscle is silly at my age but useing them to pump other parts is a great thing.

Some food for thought.  I'm friends with Dr. Neal Grossman, competes in his 60s and beats guys in their 20s and 30s....  he started competing at 55!!!  Nothing is impossible if your heart is into it.

I don't think running marathons is a very healthy pursuit for those over 40, unless they have a strong history of running.  A few years ago I did 100KM walk for OXFAM, through Mountainous terrain and the like, it was very hard, and I didn't train enough, but I managed to complete it, and I did feel great afterwards, but strangely enough, once I knew how difficult it was, I was reluctant to try it again, even though I said I would. Anyway, I think Howard can pull it off, he has a history of training, he just needs to be very sensible and extremely vigilant with his diet and cardio, their is no doubt that if he gets in fantastic shape he will be an inspiration to other older men everywhere.

Agreed, if that man is truly in his 60's, he should be proud of owning a physique like that!

I ran a full marathon on a silly dare/bet over 30 yrs ago. I finished in 4hrs 11 min and said never again at the finish.
The recent Runners World has featured the HALF- marathon ( 13.1 miles) as the new favorite goal distance for older and recreational runners.
I think it would be fun and realistic goal to compete in my state meet (over 50 div).
In the past 20 yrs , the goal of a pro card has ruined the realistic goals and sensible contest prep for many ambitious bodybuilders.
In my humble opinion anyone can compete and do just fine at a state meet within their division.
You may not beat some freak who pushes the envelope but you can place, get a trophy and feel good about yourself.

Most of the people who run distance races, don't plan on winning the race or going pro, etc.
Unlike the culture in bodybuilding , getting a "PR" and enjoying the race experience is the main focus.
I'm going to get in my best 54 yr old shape without a bunch of drugs or risky contest prep stuff.
LOL, even pro bodybuilders get cracked on here at getbig, so I will just laugh when I get made fun of.
I'll post the pics and simply do the best I can , for better or worse .

You should do it Howard.  If you don't it will haunt you until you die.  It is one last shot at glory and as the years go on it will be harder and harder.  Don't be wondering what if or I wish I would have...

I'm going to compete and raise the value of my used trunks when I sell 'em on E-Bay.
After getting 4th out of 3 guys in the 2013 over 50, they should be worth a nickel.98.

The problem with marriage is having kids.

 I thought you didn't  have kids .
