I don't think running marathons is a very healthy pursuit for those over 40, unless they have a strong history of running. A few years ago I did 100KM walk for OXFAM, through Mountainous terrain and the like, it was very hard, and I didn't train enough, but I managed to complete it, and I did feel great afterwards, but strangely enough, once I knew how difficult it was, I was reluctant to try it again, even though I said I would. Anyway, I think Howard can pull it off, he has a history of training, he just needs to be very sensible and extremely vigilant with his diet and cardio, their is no doubt that if he gets in fantastic shape he will be an inspiration to other older men everywhere.
I ran a full marathon on a silly dare/bet over 30 yrs ago. I finished in 4hrs 11 min and said never again at the finish.
The recent Runners World has featured the HALF- marathon ( 13.1 miles) as the new favorite goal distance for older and recreational runners.
I think it would be fun and realistic goal to compete in my state meet (over 50 div).
In the past 20 yrs , the goal of a pro card has ruined the realistic goals and sensible contest prep for many ambitious bodybuilders.
In my humble opinion anyone can compete and do just fine at a state meet within their division.
You may not beat some freak who pushes the envelope but you can place, get a trophy and feel good about yourself.
Most of the people who run distance races, don't plan on winning the race or going pro, etc.
Unlike the culture in bodybuilding , getting a "PR" and enjoying the race experience is the main focus.
I'm going to get in my best 54 yr old shape without a bunch of drugs or risky contest prep stuff.
LOL, even pro bodybuilders get cracked on here at getbig, so I will just laugh when I get made fun of.
I'll post the pics and simply do the best I can , for better or worse .
