I can load 405 on the bar pretty easy. Never thought of actually trying to press it  :-\

Truthfully, after three decades of consistent lifting, I don't wanna talk to anyone about weight training. It's almost always to hear some clown tell me about his routine and what he's doing. Like I give two shits. Its like, I was lifting long before you began, bud, and I'll be lifting long after you've given up and become some jackassey Mr. Mom, so ... Yeah, fuck off, is what I'm saying.

I'm sure a legend like Fortress is worried about what a 20-post newb gimmick thinks of him  ::)

I agree with this....over the years I have only seen 3 people in my gym even bench 315....if someone can bench 315 they are exceptional....I know on Getbig, EVERYONE claims to be benching much more than this..LOL...

My bench topped out at 285...couldn't even budge the bar after that......I tried to reach 315...that was my goal....but couldn't do it...

That is completely true. On internet boards every other guy can do that, irl I only see weird stares from these around when I bench as like they see an alien. Yeah I sound like one of these who "can do that", but I can, that's the difference.

good point..the people I saw do it had the same structure...and yes..they also had thick wrists...wonder if that the key???...one guy I saw do it was 18.....but he was about 6'4

The funny thing is, if I'm wearing loose/oversized clothes, you'd think "Yeah, this guy is quite big, but not all that" (as my bones are tiny), but then I start racking the weight haha..

yeah. but how many reps? 315 x10 should be the standard. if you get that you are legit strong.

To me the standard is and will always be 405 as far as if you're a strong presser or not, 440lbs/200kg being a great bench presser, the latter being a bit biased seeing as that's my all time personal best. These guys claiming 315 is such an oddity in their gyms must train at a planet fitness, at the Golds I'm out of I've seen that weight repped out more times than I can count over the years. Though a double bodyweight bench also puts you at a elite level as well in my book.

Honestly I would use that benchmark more indicative of a strong presser rather than being able to put up 405.

Really?! How many double their bodyweight on the bench WITHOUT the use of drugs? And I'm not talking about the 165-pound guy, either. I am talking about the large man (250+).

To me, this is the serious flaw in thinking as it concerns poundage lifted: Our concept of strong has been SO warped by the several decades of rampant drug/hormone use. We begin to think a 600-pound squat isn't such a big deal; or that a guy who can pull 700 isn't all that terrific a deadlifter.

Seriously, how many on this board can HONESTLY state they've pressed four or greater without the help of steroids? And if you had done them, but were not at the time of your pressing achievement, for what length of time had you been off, prior?

As with everything in this world, it would seem, the world of weight training has become so in incredibly twisted and distorted.

I'm not discounting the 405 lift AT ALL! That is a hellacious lift, no question about it.

Of course with these discussions you get into height aspect of it and all that but I find the 170 pound man of average stature lifting 350 more impressive than the heavier set 230 pound guy who can put up 405.

Don't get me wrong, the 4 plates on the bar is very impressive but give me the 2x bodyweight guy.

And it's not a "twisted or distorted" viewpoint, both men in those scenarios are incredibly strong and I have the highest respect for both.

At my max I benched 525.  Now I bench around 225 for reps.  I'm as skinny as a rail these days but I feel good.

Only when I was very young was I concerned with a big bench. There are
so many lifts out there. You might be strong in one and weak in another.

Jay Cutler can't even do a pull up. I don't care if he weighs 300 lbs.
