Yes. There is a good tie-in between these muscle groups.

Normally I train arms on their own but I thought why not a change and make my workouts a bit more compact at the moment due to work loads.

Change is usually good when it comes to working out. Otherwise, I tend to get stuck in a rut and I can only increase the weight load so much because I have strength limits which I can never seem to exceed, particularly now that I am older.

It is 70 degrees today and sunny. My workout routine was 2.5 hours of gardening; weeding, trimming shrubs and vines, deadheading spent daffodils, spraying the cracks in the concrete where weeds tend to grown and raking everything up. I filled up two yard debris barrels. If the weather is good tomorrow, I will probably do more of the same.

I need to mix things up more I must admit. I just have favouritism over certain exercises that I know my body responds better to.

Fortunately, I cut my lawn the other day, so it wasn't on my agenda today. I think I have finally conquered the moss in the grass out front this year with lots of lime applications. Another thing, I raise the blade on the lawnmower up one notch. After cutting the grass it is still long, but it is lush and green and stands up straight. I suspect that it is just like the True Value Hardware store add says, the longer the grass the deeper the roots; drainage was not a problem this winter at all. I did fertilize the lawn about a month ago. I didn't need weed killer in the mix because there aren't any. They crop up in the planting beds.

You are right, we all have favorites. That is part of why we get into a rut sometimes.

well i will get a cardio workout in today then work till 9pm. I feel good today chest and triceps feeling well trained from yesterday. will go for a run in the woods get some nature and fresh air.. sometimes meet the odd deer in the woods. Wild pigs roam the woods too but they shy away from people, they can be aggressive if they have young piggies with them.. ;D imagine being chased by these wild piggies...LOL. Remember on field exercises on sentry duty at night in a trench watching them moving around coming near our gun position looking for food. I had a night sight scope on my SLR rifle so i could see them.

Hey, folks.  I'll be 43 in July and have been training seriously and naturally for about four years.  I work out what I feel is pretty hard in the gym, doing 10 to 12 sets per bodypart, going to failure, etc., and working each body part once per week.  I feel that I've made very good gains in my physique and strength, at least compared to where I was when I started (I'm only competing with myself).

I feel that I have stopped making gains, both physique wise and strength wise.  I'm happy where I'm at, but, you know, why not strive for more if you can?

I guess I'm wondering whether I've just reached a plateau or whether this is as far as my body is going being my age (nearly 43), being natural, and starting so late in life.  I think I work pretty hard in the gym, and am not really interested in adding too much more lest I get burnt out and lose interest altogether.

If this is as far as I can go, I'm wondering whether it's a good idea to keep pushing myself hard in the gym (I'm not getting any younger), or best to just do a maintenance routine and concentrate on overall conditioning, etc.

Has anyone else gone through this, and can perhaps offer thoughts and/or advice.  I realize I've been pretty general about my routine, etc.  Thanks.

Kolchak: Don't know why so many guy's think that reaching their forties is the end of the line, as far a progress in muscle size and strength is concerned. Even in the 60's, and beyond, progress can be made, if approaching training with a well planned and throughout program.

It's been said that the forties are the new twenties today. And they can be. Train with serious intent and do work hard, by all means. Only adjustments might be less exercises and sets in a workout. And really no need to go to the point of failure in any exercise. Recovery is going to be of prime importance now. This is the time to work extra smart. May not be 20 anymore, but in the 40's the body will still respond favorably to any  realistic demands put on it. Let common sense be your guide, more so than in younger years. BB'er still advance, Pl'ers still break records in their 40's.

If having joint or lower back issues, than warm up more. Rather than the heavy 4-5 rep  push or pulls, select a more moderate weight for higher reps. Moderate does not always mean a lighter weight. Might also try  to work at a faster pace during workouts. TUT can be extremely important for adding improved muscle and size. Taking a week (or two) away from training seems to have helped many people, also. Sometime a break is truly needed, for the young or old.. Good Luck.

Nice introductory post. Some people in their 40's benefit from doing fewer sets and allowing more rest between workouts. Although you are still a youngster in my book, you might try working each muscle group only twice or even only once a week. Overtraining is often the reason people stop making gains. Anyway, the best goal to have is to be healthy and reasonably fit.
