A 'teetotaler'.. I've never read this word before, nice one! (thx Google Translate) I'm not a teetotaler either, but I'm pretty sensitive to alcohol. I only drink it when there's a place to sleep. The price of alcohol-free wine is prob high due its limited supply and demand, and the production process. Beer however, is a different story, but I'm not really into beer, other than a few labels.

Some time ago, I bought pure green tea powder, since it's much cheaper than capsules, but never again. It tastes awful and it's like glue, combined with water.
Maybe you can add some honey instead of sugar? They're still fast carbs, but it's good for your immune system (reference).

'Over here' means the Netherlands, so no Costco, Whole Foods or Gold's gym chains ;)
What's the purpose of Alcohol free drinks to trick your mind into thinking you are drinking the same stuff? Kinda like de-caff coffee whats the purpose to make your teeth brown?

Mainly because of my alcohol sensitivity. It would prob be a different story when I drink more frequently.

The Netherlands looks beautiful in pictures and video. It must get really cold there though. I thought people in that part of the world were known to be big drinkers....shows you how much I don't know.

Honey is great stuff; sugar is handier. As long as it is not artificial sweetener, I am fine with it. I am not big on sweets, so a little sugar or honey every now and again isn't going to cause me much grief.

I use a few supplements, like CoQ10 which is good for high cholesterol and Slow Niacin for the same purpose. I also take DHEA which is a legal oral hormone that boosts one's mental capacity and lightens their state of mind. Before and after every workout, I take a Creatine supplement in pill form. Other then these things it's just a daily multi-vitamin and additional vitamin C. Some of these products do come from Costco. Too bad you don't have one where you live. Their prices and choices for protein powder and drinks in really good too.

I know I said I was going to wait until Saturday before going back to my routine at the gym, but I couldn't stand not going one more day because it was making me nuts. So I told my wife I was going to the gym to see if I could do a light workout. Once I got there, I decided to go full-bore and see what happened. I had a really fantastic workout today.

Hamstrings and calves:

Weight 206 which surprised me since I was 198 the other morning. I must have been dehydrated or something.

Changed things up a bit.

Nautilus hip abduction 3X20-15 @ 90-110
Nautilus hip adduction 3X20-15 @ 120-140
Nautilus lying leg curls 4X12-6 @ 60-80
Nautilus seated leg curls 4X15-8 @ 70-100
Reverse machine hack squats 4X15-8 @ 90-360 added weight
Standing calf raises 6X20-10 @ 200-300 supersets with seated calf raises 4X15-8 @ 90-135
Nautilus leg press calf raises 4X15-10 @ 210-285
Nautilus leg extensions, single leg 4X20-12 @ 50, double leg 1X15@120  (got a real nice burn on these)

I really like tea this way too, but I usually crave it in the winter when it is dreary out. For me, milk is half and half or cream when I add it to a beverage. Heck, it is only a tablespoon, if that.

Also I try to make every exercise as hard as I can make it using a smooth cadence and a full range of motion. I know most guys want to pick up the "big" dumbbells then proceed to make the exercise as easy as they can by short stroking everything. I never saw short stroking back in the day and now if you ask someone why they are doing it they tell you it's injury prevention. I would rather grab the 60lbs dumbbells for shoulder presses and go all the way down than have two guys hand me the 100lbs and do half reps where the elbows (humerus) never break parallel.

There was this young fellow working out on the machine preacher curl using a ton of weight. I noticed it mainly because he has a really slight build. He was just doing the top half or third of the exercise. He had me lift the weight up to that position for him. Maybe he's building a peak???

Later a fellow with nice full biceps was working out on the Nautilus multi-bicep machine. I couldn't see where he'd pinned the weight but he too was only work the top half of the exercise.

With little exception, I always shoot for full range movements. I have done curls where you superset them in thirds, meaning you lift the bottom third of the movement for reps, then the middle and then the upper third. I think you finish off with some full range reps.....it has be a long time since I've done these. What your opinion about this kind of movement?

Thanks for the tip. Although a meniscal tear doesn't heal itself, something has changed because I have nearly zero pain. This was the case yesterday too when I saw the orthopedic surgeon. I think that's why he suggested a follow up visit in six weeks to see how everything was going with my knee. No sense in cutting away the tear if there is no pain and he agreed with this.

He's a super doctor. He replaced one of my wife's knees a few years back. She had much less trouble with this knee replacement then she did with the first one on the other knee using a different doctor.

It was for the knee that I decided to do the leg extensions. They seemed to help when it was hurting, might as well keep doing them. I am going to have giant teardrops to beat out yours someday....remember?

3.5 mile brisk walk around my neighborhood. 200 ab crunches. - workout

1 chicken breast with brown rice and broccli for dinner and a protein shake earlier in the day  :D

Your really into this. Good for you. Did you do all 200 ab crunches in one set? My abs would be permanently cramped if I tried this. 25 reps is my limit.

Like you, I am pickier about what beers I will drink then I am about wine. I mainly like dark ales. This usually means imported beer. Of course German beer in Germany is better than anything we have here since all our beer, imported or not, is pasteurized. It has to be by law. The FDA is big on protecting U.S. citizens from themselves. It feels like a police state here sometimes. Don't even get me started on legalizing drugs as opposed to spending billions of $$$$ on drug enforcement which doesn't work.

I have no scientific references for this, but I don't think that the width of the grip has much influence in the traps involvement.
A little confession. In order to look balanced, I don't perform direct calf and trap exercises. I worry much more about my hamstrings, inner chest, triceps and forearms.
well if i use a Close grip i am stronger and use more weight because the traps are strongly involved and are very powerful and more so than deltas in an upright pulling Motion. if you say you are using a wide grip to target more "side Del ts" then you are in a way agreeing that the grip does make a difference. i have a book here that tested various trap movements and tested them...

number 1 ex for upper traps was:
dumbbell shrugs with a reading of 585 xemg
Close grip upright rows 568 xemg
Deadlifts (they did not test Deadlifts saying.. because of the Anatomical function of the muscles and the high weight that can be lifted , the Training effect is highly probable.(any Trainer knows it hit traps hard)

so i think using a Close grip is more effective than a wide grip. The Book is "Fitness Krafttraining" ISBN 3-499-19481-3
I have quoted this book on a few occasions because it really Looks at the exercises, tests them and gives a very clear indication of the effects from Prof Wolfgang Buskies Deutschen Sport Hochschule Köln  and Wende-Uwe Boeckh-Behres, Director Institute Sport and studies University Bayreuth.

I also agree with this Video...

When shrugging with a extra wide grip (closer to the inside collars) you are getting more of a stretch on the traps, affecting development from a different angle. As when Olympic lifters grip for the snatch, most of the whole diamond shapes traps are affected. Even a grip, where the hands are very close together (almost touching) might be include in a serious trap routine.

One of the better trap mass building movements are power cleans and Hi-pulls, which also affect the whole of the shoulder girdle. Including the rear delts strongly.  Don't have to use massive weight & low reps. The normal BB'ing rep protocol of 8-12 can work extremely well for size and strength. Check out the development of Olympic lifters and thebenefits of these pulls for thick and powerful traps.

Trap bars are very good. Trap bars place the thumbs forward, giving a more natural grip, andreduice tension on the wrist/forearms. DB's, when doing shrugs, will tend to rub against the side of the leg when moving into heavier weight.

The upright row is a favorite exercise for me. Guy's will have problems with it, if raising the bar out and away from the body, giving extra stress on the wrist, elbow and shoulder joints. Try keeping the bar close (almost touching) to the body at all times. Suggest a EZ bar, there are different angles to EZ bars depending on the company who made them.   One arm DB upright rows are exceptional, usually bracing the free arm onto something. Wider the upward arc hits the delts very well also.   Good Luck.
