Scott, I hope you get well soon. Prime, it must really be stressful for all involved with what your wife is going through.

Going to change my approach to training. I always train according to a script. Increasing weight, increasing reps or to shorten the time from the previous workout is the goal. Keeping a journal is a great way to train but now I realize for an analytically trainer like me it becomes an obsessive compulsive thing.

Sad to say the body doesn't work according to pre-planned improvements. Maybe if you have a few years on and you're young. A better approach is to train according to how hard you can push yourself that day. If I got 8 reps last chest day in the bench I will no longer go into a funk if I got 6 reps because I am shot from a run or some other reason. I will train according to what I can do that day.

I can't imagine using my weight lifting mythology and applying it to my running. When I run I will say today is 2 mile day or a 5 mile day say. I will run hard but there isn't a goal to beat last times run. That would be insanity.  As long a a month to month improvement is noted or maintained it's good enough.

I'm going to pick an exercise I am using. Do three sets increasing weight each set. Make sure the first set is felt but not killer.  I won't increase the reps when using a lighter weight. Bodybuilder Ed Robinson had an article on his training awhile back. If my memory serves me he said in general he did 4 sets increasing the weight each set but not decreasing the reps. He would just do the sets purer with the lighter weights. I know most would decrease the reps as they pyramid the weight up. He would do 4 sets of 8 increasing weight each set.

i am the same and go by feel. pyramid and when i reach my target weight on that Day i stay on it even if i drop a rep or two. I never however go below 5-6 reps. Last set should be hard but not impossible and then i sometimes drop the weight and rep out not counting reps. Rich is correct when he wrote some Days you are just beat energy wise, then i drop a set or even an exercise in this way i can still get a good workout without beating my body up. Physiologically and physically better. I am at the moment a bit more rigid doing POF workouts but i never liked having a detailed training log. Last night i really felt my Biceps on the Incline curls, Reeves style with an off set grip so i pronate naturally. Looks a bit odd but works a treat.

ez bar curls(alternate between straight bar) 3 sets
incline "Reeves" curls 3 sets
Seated DB curls 3 sets

Lying DB extensions 3 sets
Incline BB extensions 3 sets
Kickbacks(cable) 3 sets

Standing calf raises 5 sets on the smith machine. no cardio but will go for a run in the woods or a cycle. snowing again :( still not as bad as i saw on TV .. the US has it bad at the moment.

Firstly, thank you oldtimer for the  kind remark.

Friday's routine was, well..routine.  Three sets of 10 down to 5 reps on slow pull ups followed by three sets of pull downs (wide grip) of 15 reps and then 1 drop set to failure on machine rows.

Incline Smith Bench Press.  First set was 17 reps, and the second one was for 10 reps.  Machine Bench Press for 3 negative reps (no one there to provide additional pressure on the "bar", dammit!).  This was followed by one set to failure on the Machine Flyes and then one set to failure immediately after that on the Machine Bench Press.

Three sets of DB shrugs and I was all done.  I feel pretty good today and may train later in the garage as I don't much care for sports, including football.

All is better at the moment. On the way to breakfast today my wife passed out and neither our daughter nor I could revive her. Instead of going to breakfast, we ended up at the emergency room. We're still here, waiting for them to release her. She doesn't want to be admitted to the hospital.

Super - bowl viewing can wait.

There is no definitive diagnosis at this point. She didn't have a stroke or a heart attack. Her kidney function remains at 10%.

All our chins are up today. My wife is doing okay. We still don't know what happened yesterday and maybe we never will.

It is very fortunate that my wife and I have our family so close. She needs someone with her or at least within earshot at all times now should she have another seizure. It would be truly overwhelming for one person to try and do this alone.

I appreciate all the support I get from you all on Getbig. I really need this distraction right now. It may not help me stay physically fit, like hitting the gym does, but it does keep me mentally fit.

I'll get a little break tomorrow since I have a speech to give in Eugene, OR which is about two hours drive south from where I live. I'll be having lunch with this group of university retirees as I always do when they invite me down to give a talk. This is one of those things I wouldn't be able to do if our daughter, son-in-law and grandson did not live with us. Life has it's blessings. Sometimes it is just hard to see them.

Yesterday I ran 3 slow miles on the treadmill. Then ate about 7000 calories between beer, ribs and other football food watching the game.

Trained delt and arms today. I generally went up in weight each set but the reps stayed the same. Found this was a great way to warm up and get in the groove. I got both a pump and a strength set.

Press behind neck 4 x 6
dumbbell laterals 4 x 10
rear dumbbell laterals 4 x 10
barbell shrugs 4 x 10

barbell curls 4 x 10
alternate dumbbell curl 4 x 8
D handle one arm curl 4 x 12

forearm wrist curl 4 x 20 (forearms were burning)
wrist extensions 4 x15
Ivanko gripper 2 x 20 (really weak from wrist curls)

First time doing volume in awhile. Tried to stay away from failure but came close. Going up in weight for each set but keeping the same reps is really a great way to train. I learned this from an article on Ed Robinson in a Weider magazine. Most go from high reps to low reps when pyramiding the weight up. I think I'm going to keep this method for awhile. I know the concept sounds odd and maybe I will write why I think it's a great way to train in another post.

Donny I got this thing for stretching the calf, Achilles tendon, foot arch and soleus muscle. I didn't realize how tight I had every thing and I think that contributed to the plantar fasciitis. I'm improving every day. I got a cortisone shot too. I know many say it weakens tendons and ligaments but a one time shot can work wonders in getting rid of swelling and making the tissue pliable again. I also took anti inflammatory drugs. I stretched using that device and I slept with a boot contraption to keep my foot from going forward so my arch wouldn't get tight at night. I also taped up my arch. This keep it from getting little tears. You can find taping videos on youtube. I went from pain for months to actually almost being 85%.

Good to hear it helped. i might look into it but at the moment i feel better. i really have felt an improvement  because of concentrating more on how i land on my feet when running. sounds funny but i feel itīs important because of the weight distribution.

chest last night..
Incline BB press 4 sets
Incline cable flys 4 sets (Squeeze at top)
Incline DB flys(doing lower portion of the Fly)4 sets
Decline BB press 4 sets

cardio crosser 30 mins hard Interval programme.

Opinions on this video below... i think this Guy has the right idea about always searching to improve exercises and i like his videos. Just maybe over complicating things at times but for people with bad shoulders who canīt do incline press or incline flys..etc.. maybe a good alternative.

I just wonder about his conclusions. If you do a military press your chest will contract isometrically as a stabilizer and isotonic during some of the movement. All of which proves nothing concerning is it getting the top section of your chest. His pec isometrically stabilizing during his one arm shrug and bringing the arm across is proof of an upper pec builder?

He talks of Contraction. He has the right idea about bringing his arm across(no surprise), I feel my chest when i do this even with a small movement. He has i believe a physio Background and looks into other possibilities. Of course the "mind muscle connection" has to be good on this ;D "Isotonic" is a word i have not heard in a while Rich, reminds me of my old Bullworker.

Old school terms. I'm sure they have updated with more fancy technical sounding buzz words. Isometric a muscle contracting without movement and isotonic a muscle contracting with movement and the length of a muscle changing whether eccentrically or concentrically. I'm sure the new buzz words has these old school terms out the window. I was talking to a medical doctor about the "insertion" of a muscle and he said that's the old school term that's rarely used now but that's what he learned in medical school and he likes it; origin and insertion.

Yes i know what you are saying. They do not realize posing is a watered down version of isometrics. i remember as a kid pushing against a wall or curling holding a towel slowing the movement with my other arm. Forgotten things. Good times Rich.

Today was a day off from training. I ran 3 miles on the treadmill. Too much ice on the road for an old guy to slip and fall.  ;D Ran slow at a 9:30 per mile pace. I think off the top of my head that's about 6.2 MPH.

I then hit the heavy bag for two three minute rounds. I would have done more but I snapped a bolt holding it up. Followed up with two sets of push up and pull ups. Didn't realize how much the run and hitting the bag took it out of me concerning push ups and chins.

Lastly I did one circuit of abs.
1. Incline sit ups ( I got away from these and I'm sorry I ever left them.)
2. crunches
3. bicycle
4. hanging leg raises
5. machine pulley crunches

These days off of working out is going to kill me. I also have to start drinking less beer. You can out work a poor diet but you can't out work an horrific one.  ;D

Trying hard to intensify my training.  Today was back, chest and abs.

Three sets of 10 down to 4 reps on slow pull palms facing inward pull ups.
One set of Smith Machine bent over rows to failure.

Two supersets of machine flys and machine bench press both to failure.

Two sets (one warm up) of machine sit ups.  Done.

I have no one to train with and so it is difficult to really push myself but I will continue to try.  I also have to realize that if I get hurt it is over for a while and so I think I will alternate  between HIT and volume depending upon how I feel in the physical and mental sense of the word.

Intensity for immensity?  Let's hope so!  Train hard, lads!   ;D
